Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • How To Find Correct Replacement Bearings and Hub for Outback Trailer with AL-KO Axles
I have a few options for you to help with identifying the bearings on your trailer. The first and easiest method would be to crawl under the trailer and look for the axle tag on the beam. This should give an axle capacity which we can then use to find the bearings based off industry standards. For example, a 3,500 lb axle uses L68149 and L44649 bearings like what comes with the Hub Bearing Kit for Lippert, Dexter, and Al-Ko Axles part # BK2-100 or the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly...

  • Recommended Axle To Replace Older AL-KO T44 With Discontinued Braking Assemblies
I have a replacement option for you, but unfortunately the AL-KO braking assemblies # K23-538-00 and # K23-539-00 have been discontinued after AL-KO was bought out by Dexter. The best option would be to replace your current axle with one that uses standard brakes to allow you to find replacement brakes now and in the future. Since we do not have any 4400lb axles, I recommend using 5200lb axles as a replacement. We offer the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2...

While we do have the self-adjusting brakes you need to purchase, the # 23-106 and # 23-105 that come with the Dexter Trailer Axle - 6K # 8327820-EB are manual adjusting. In order to have the same setup with self-adjusting brakes, you need the following parts: - Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 89" Long - 6,000 lbs # 8327830 - Brake Mounting Bolt for 12" Brake Assembly # 7-5 - LocTite Hyper Lube # LOC54FR - Dexter 12" Hub/Drum # 8-201-5UC3-EZ - Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric...

  • Recommended Replacement 5,200 lb Axle with 89 Inch Length
Traditionally it is not a 5,000 lb axle but rather a 5,200 lb axle. There are two 89 inch hub face to hub face options we carry, they both have 74 inch spring seat centers, but one comes with the electric brakes and hubs and the other is just the axle. If you will use electric brakes, I recommend going with the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" - 5,200 lb # 8327820-EB. If you will use hydraulic brakes then I recommend instead using the...

  • Are Replacement Drums Available For An AL-KO 4400 Pound Axle?
Due to odd spacing with AL-KO 4,400 pound axles, specifically how far out they mounted the brakes, there will not be any current drums available as replacements. With that being said, the best thing to do will be to replace the axle with something that is more common, like the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 8327820-EB. This will include everything needed to replace the axle, including brakes, drums, bearings, seals, grease caps, lug nuts, and even grease. However, this will also...

Although we don't offer a 5000 lb axle, we do offer 5200 lb axles that might work for you, depending on the hub face to hub face dimension you're needing. We offer Dexter axles with an 86-1/2 inch hub face to hub face dimension and 71-1/2 center to center spring seat spacing that could work for you, but you'd need to remove the existing spring seats and tack new ones in place using part # TRSS300 at a 70 inch center. The Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 8327820-EB will work for you but you should note that it is one inch shorter from hub face to hub face so as long as you have at least 1-12 inches from your inner sidewall to the frame of your trailer this wouldn't be an issue at all. We would definitely be able to upgrade to a higher capacity Leaf Spring or Silent Ride set up. That being said, we do not carry torsion axles, so we do not have a bolt on upgrade available. The axle # 8327820-EB would upgrade you to 5,200 pounds per axle, but with the spring seats being 74 inches from center to center, it is pretty specific as to what it fits. Yes, you can replace the 3,500 lb Dexter Axles with 5,200 lb Dexter Axles by simply swapping out the old for the new. That said, you will need new u-bolts as the axle will be larger in diameter (2-3/8" vs. 3").
