Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

I was able to install the hitch by myself. Took me about 1 hour and the most difficult part was the muffler rubber attachment. The wires included are a very clever solution getting those screws inside the car frame!! Overall I had fun installing it and it’s a solid hitch. I’m in my mid 40’s and fairly fit. I can see this being not so easy for folks not very handy and in bad shape but you can get it installed by a shop for 50$ If that’s a problem. Shipping was incredibly fast and got it in 3 days. 100% recommended

This is a great quality product with excellent installation support that I have come to expect from etrailer! My hitch receiver came with all hardware and ingenious "fish wires" to install this unit making it a simple procedure. For a person like me doing this in my driveway I can say that having an assistant, while not necessary, would make this install much easier. Other suggestions to future installers is that the latest etrailer video for this Draw Tite is a must watch. Additional suggestions are: leave all 4 rubber muffler hangers on the top frame hanger posts, twist the rearward pair to point to the front of the car before mounting the unit and have a deep and shallow (standard depth) 19mm or 3/4 inch socket for your torque wrench since room is limited.

Great hitch, not too difficult to install. Highly recommend 2 people and a ramp or jack stands to prop up the back. Only negative is that it came scratched in numerous places but I assume that’s due to shipping. Covered the areas in clear coat to hopefully prevent rusting. Overall, would purchase again.

The hitch looks great! Just like the other reviews, an extrat set of hands to hold the hitch into place really helps! Once the exhaust hangers were removed, the installation went very quick. As per instructions/video/other reviewers...remember to put the rubber hangers back into place on the frame mounts BEFORE putting hitch into place. Now I’m just waiting for my bike rack to arrive and I will be ready to roll!

Solid construction, perfect fit and looks . Installation was a breeze with a 2nd set of hands to help hold in place while installing the fasteners. The installation video was also extremely helpful and well done. Primarily expect to use this for bicycle rack/transport; however, we may also use it to tow a trailer at some point. Overall we’re extremely happy with the purchase. etrailer made all aspects of the purchase easy. Everything from information/videos on selecting the right hitch, bike rack and accessories; simple online ordering and fast shipping. I highly recommend!

2013 Mazda CX-5

I decided to order this after my Mazda dealer quoted me $650 to install a tiny class 1 hitch on my CX-5. I am not handy at all, but figured it was worth the risk and cost savings to try this myself. I watched a YouTube video on the installation process and then bit the bullet and bought this. I'm super happy with my decision. Between the video and the included instructions, I was able to get through the installation easily and the product looks and feels very high quality. Doing it myself saved me a ton of money. My main purpose for installing this was because my kids are riding bikes now and we need to fit 4 on a rack, which I only wanted to do on a hitch rack. In about 90 minutes I'm all set!

Product Was good and fit perfectly on my car.Installation is super easy as with instructions and videos. This is my first time installing a hitch so initially I struggled as due to lack of help. After a little research and with the help of a friend Installed in 15 Mins(Research and initials trail not counted).Things to remember. 1)Car ramps will help where we can pick from [hardware store]. 2)Flat head screwdriver and soap water is super good option for removing Exhaust from hangers. 3)Rubber bushes should be on top hooks and facing front side of the car(Not back side to-wards trunk). 4)Remove one facia screw(plastic clip) for easy adjustment which was not demonstrated in the video but advised in the manual. 5)Better to keep the fish wires of the back bolts to avoid pushing them inside the frame.(C-retention rings will help where manufacturer is not providing). 6)Second person will make the job easy. Paint Quality is very very poor which is pealing out as mentioned by others in this forum. Installed my Kuat rack which comes with stabilizer and fits perfect. yet to test on the roads. Pics or not so clear.

2021 Mazda CX-5

etrailer rocks. Delivered quick and fits my 2021 CX-5 perfectly, for a great price on this Class III hitch. The hitch is overkill for the towing specs of the CX-5, but I don't like the hitch being the limiting factor. The installation video made it easy to understand everything, especially the fish wires. One person installation was tough to do on the CX-5. Much more so than on the other two hitches I have done myself. Got it done and am happy with it, which is what matters. Will be towing a lightweight camper with it. Car is filthy from the recent storms, so I'm skipping adding a picture.

Shipping was fast, install was a breeze. My wife helped me to lift into place but aside from that the videos were spot on on how to install it onto my 2014 cx5. We plan on using this for our camping trips. Next purchase will be a cargo carrier.

Package arrived safely, contents in good shape and well protected. Hitch was an easy install on the ground by myself with a rolling floor jack, install time was around one hour taking my time. Without a jack, it would be pretty difficult to install alone (I’m a 30 year old man I’m good shape, and I could not have done it without either a jack or a second set of hands). I loved that A: I saved money over the factory Mazda hitch, and B: I did not have to trim the rear bumpers lower valance on my 18’ cx5, like the factory Mazda hitch would have required, and C: the factory Mazda hitch is only a class 1 baby hitch. In summary, I would recommend this hitch to anyone. 5 stars.

Draw-tite hitch and Curt wire harness are great. Delivery and follow-up from etrailer are excellent. The installation was a 4 hour job by a professional installer. Installation of wiring and connections were hidden from view during the job. I would not recommend this installation to an amateur who does not have a high lift. For the home DIY, this would be an all day, and perhaps longer, process without proper tools and a lift. My Mazda CX_5 Grand Touring did not have the extra trim piece to remove. This made the job a bit easier. All-in-all, I love the products purchased from etrailer. [Thumbs up]

Install went great, but having a second set of hands to install would be helpful. I used a bungee to hold up one side while I bolted the other into place and it worked. Would recommend etrailer and the hitch!

- 76138
by:

I'm very happy with my purchase. It was shipped promptly and received two days ahead of the estimate. The installation was straightforward. I recommend updating the instructions and video to highlight that the rearmost rubber vibration dampener should remain on the vehicle, as I found out the hard way that there is no way to reinstall it after installing the hitch...requiring me to remove the hitch to install...I got really good at the installation though! A second pair of hands is helpful, but I found a hydraulic jack that supported the hitch worked just as well, and could be positioned and wiggle less more effectively. I spent 2 hours installing/removing/re-installing, but actually enjoyed myself.

This hitch has worked great for us. We only use it to support a bike rack, but we've used it several times and it's been fine. It took a little while to install, and was helped by having two people in a few spots, but I don't regularly work on cars, so I expected that. There were no fit problems, the instructions were clear, and I feel that I was able to do a good job with the installation. I would buy from etrailer again!

Ordered, Arrived by UPS in great condition in a box with carry handles and packed with paper. I re-watched the video and paused it at the muffler hangers. I pulled the hitch out of the box and began to undo the muffler hangers and lower it out of the way. I pretty much followed the video step by step as they showed. I had my daughter help me lift it up and under and we started to thread the washer and nuts to the first set of bolts. Again pretty much following the video. We were done in under an hour. Could have been quicker but I was explaining things to her as we went so she could learn a bit.

This is my second order with etrailer.com over the many years and the product, customer service and delivery experience were fantastic as usual. 2018 Mazda CX-5

I purchased the Draw-Tite hitch for our Mazda CX-5. It arrived as promised and fit perfectly. I found the website installation video was extremely helpful which made the self installation much faster than using only the supplied paper instructions. Total installation time was about 90 minutes with my wife helping support the hitch during it's installation. This part is at most 10 minutes so the vast majority of the work is a one man operation. I used standard 9" car ramps to raise the rear end and had plenty of room to work under the car. My only note in addition to the instructional video is to make sure you leave the rear most rubber isolators attached to the car, not the muffler, when lowering the muffler assembly. You will not have room to install them between the hitch and mounting bracket once the muffler is back up in position. The forward rubber isolators don't have the same restriction. The supplied hardware and aids to help install the washer/bolts in the frame were spot on. All in all I could not have been happier with both the installation and hitch itself. Lastly, as the instructions call out for the removal of a trim piece under the bumper prior to installation, I was able to cut and modify the original trim piece around the newly installed hitch so that it could be re-installed. Not sure it is really required but figured what comes off should go back on if possible. Pictures of both the final installation and of the re-installed trim piece below. Bottom line, Another great experience with Etrailer products !

Instructions made install very manageable. One trick I used was to use the car jack to hold the frame in place while securing the bolts. Have used it a year for bike rack and small trailer loads of mulch.

Fine hitch, very sturdy. Arrived super quick from etrailer. Mounts slightly recessed from bumper with no bumper cuts necessary. Bought to use with single 1UP USA bike rack and the combo is rock solid with my 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT. Was worried that need to insert the rack 4+" into hitch receiver might not allow rack to clear the bumper when in its fold up position. etrailer looked at schematic and assured me it would. They were right! No issues. My only advice, if you plan to use the 1UP double rack AND keep it on the car all the time, you might choose a hitch that extends about .5" further out. This would allow the hatch door to clear the double rack in full fold up position and stay within 1UP insertion requirements. The door easily clears the single rack. Tried it with a 1UP add on (turning my single rack into a double) in full vertical fold up and was surprised to find it almost cleared as well when right at the minimum insertion! Anyway, fine hitch, thanks etrailer!

Delivery and product were excellent. With the helpful videos, installation was straightforward. I realize the item description said a part may be needed to be cut for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT model, but it would have been nice to have a custom made hitch fit perfectly without discarding a piece of the plastic under the bumper. There is a strip of plastic that needs to be removed and discarded with a flathead screwdriver for the hitch to fit on the GT model. Besides that, everything was of great quality and craftsmanship. After reading other reviews, I listened to others and left the rubber exhaust hangers on the top hooks, on the car, rather than on the exhaust itself. One thing to add was when I rotated the hanger to make installing the hitch easier, I rotated it back towards the rear, which I later learned took a little effort rotating it all the way forward and down to reattach the exhaust. I should have rotated the oval hanger forward, towards the front, which would have taken no effort rotating back down to reattach the exhaust. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I'll attach some photos for reference.

2017 Mazda CX5 -Purchased for hauling bikes/bike rack -Reasons for purchase over other hitches: Good instructions and video , I was confident this would fit my vehicle. Price. No Modifications to vehicle other than removing small trim piece. 2” is more versatile and can be used for other/bigger things in the future. Can be upgraded with wiring to tow larger things like trailers/campers. Can easily be Removed if no longer needed/wanted/sold. Product arrived promptly. Installation took approx 60minutes from taking it out of the box in my garage with NO jacks/ramps/lifts. I had my 13 year old son help for a few minutes to hold one side as I lifted it into place. Recommended Tools are a MUST. Disappointed that out of the box the paint was already flaking off! I did not bother complaining or returning....because after all this is going UNDER A Car.... BUT....the paint Should Survive Shipping!

The Curt # C13315 and the Draw Tite part # 76138 for your 2019 Mazda CX-5 are both really great options that would both work great for you, but if I had to pick one over the other I would go with the Curt as it is a little less visible at the rear of the vehicle than the Draw Tite. The difference between the mounting points on the Draw-Tite # 76138 and the Curt # C13315 and etrailer # e98902 hitches is simply that's just how the manufacturers decided to design the brackets. • Is there a Difference in the Trailer Hitches for a 2016 and 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring
The announced differences between the 2016 and 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 would not affect fit. The hitch fits are actually the same (for the most part) for both 2016 and 2016.5 models. For example Draw-Tite hitch # 76138 fits both. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip,...

  • Does Exhaust Need To Be Removed To Install Trailer Hitch On 2016 Maxda CX-5
For the installation of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 76138 the muffler is very easy to remove. You just remove the two fasteners at the rear of the muffler and the 2 fasteners on the exhaust pipe going into the muffler and you can get the muffler out of the way while you install it. As the instructions state, you can lower the exhaust to have easier access, but I recommend doing it like the installers in our shop show.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring
You're smart to want the flexibility of a 2 inch hitch receiver; that will offer you many more options in terms of accessories than the smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver. With that in mind, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76138 for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, which is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. There are no drawbacks to installing this hitch over its Class II counterpart, the Draw-Tite # 36601, as the Class III offers the flexibility you mentioned and is actually three pounds lighter...

  • Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2020 Mazda CX-5
    The Draw-Tite Class III hitch you'd looked at, part # 76138 is indeed a fit for your 2020 Mazda CX-5. If you'll be towing with your hitch, you'll also need a # 118746 trailer wiring harness, a ball mount like # 2753 and a # 19261 1-7/8 or # 63845 2 inch trailer ball.

  • Do the Exhaust Hangers on a 2019 Mazda CX-5 Need to Be Removed for the Draw-Tite Hitch 76138
In order to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76138 on your 2019 Mazda CX-5 you will need to lower the exhaust by removing the metal exhaust hanger studs from the rubber isolators. This can be done with the isolators left on the muffler side or on the vehicle side, it does not matter which you choose but I find it easier to leave them on the muffler side. In order to remove them you will need to spray a bit of lubricant inside the rubber and then you can use...

  • Does the Draw-Tite # 76138 Come with Wiring to Tow a Trailer with a 2018 Mazda CX-5
Our trailer hitches like the Draw-Tite # 76138, which is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Mazda CX-5, do not come with electrical, but I can point you in the right direction for your Mazda. I recommend going with the Tekonsha T-One # 118746 which plugs in behind your tail lights and the draws power from the battery on your CX-5 via the 12V power lead. This bypasses the wiring on your CX-5 so that any issues on your trailer to not trickle back to your tow vehicle. You also need a ball...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2016 Mazda CX-5
The best way to determine which model Mazda CX-5 you have is to simply visit your local Mazda dealer and provide them with your VIN. They will be able to take this information and tell you exactly what model you have and anything that was installed at the factory. With that being said, regardless of the model vehicle you have, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76138. This Class III hitch will actually fit both the 2016.5 mid-year model and those...
