Video Transcript for Checking Out the Coupler Pin

What's going on neighbor, Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at a coupler pin. So this one is gonna be like some of the other ones that we carry here at etrailer, but this one's gonna be zinc coated. It's going to have a diameter of about 5/16 of an inch. It's gonna be about 2.5" long. So, if you have something connected to your vehicle, whether it is a boat like this, it's gonna have a coupler.

So with this, you need to put that into place just so this lever isn't going to disengage and loosen it around the ball. We have a couple of different types. I definitely like the zinc coated portion of it. I don't necessarily love the fact that we don't have a little tab. So some of the different clips, we're gonna have a little bit of extra metal on the end here.

So this one isn't too difficult to get up, but it doesn't have like a dedicated little spot for your finger. You kind of just have to pull this and call it a day. Another thing that this one does not come with is a chain to connect it to wherever. So I like having the chain just because I lose things a lot, but if you are not like me and you can keep track of stuff a little bit better, this isn't really gonna wander off on you. But at the end of the day, it's just a coupler pin.

You just wanna make sure that the 2.5" long, it's going to be long enough to go completely through. So if you have a latch like this, super thin, this is gonna be plenty good. Just make sure the diameter is going to be anywhere upwards of 5/16 of an inch, as you can see if it's through there, nice and snug. And this thing is not going anywhere. If you do have an easy coupler like this, the diameter is right, but the length isn't.

So when I put it in there, it just comes out to the edge. So it isn't gonna be the right size. So, you do have a couple of like this. We have a longer ones here at etrailer. So definitely go with one of those. And that'll do it for our zinc coated coupler pin..

See what our Experts say about this JR Products Hitch Pins and Clips

  • Availability for Safety Pin for Trailer Coupler
Many couplers like the # DM15945 do not come with a safety pin. This likely cuts cost out of the product and allows you to use an existing safety pin if you have one, choose your own, or add a lock instead. This particular coupler has a 5/16" diameter hole and requires a 2-1/2" span so you could use a coupler pin like the # 37201051. I'm not sure which coupler you have. If it is the MC51923 you mentioned that doesn't bring up any product here at etrailer, or anywhere else on the internet...

  • Curt Ball Mount and Hitch Receiver Lock
Yes, I can confirm that all of those parts do fit together. The Coupler Pin - 5/16" x 2-1/2" item # 37201051 will be loose inside that ball mount though. You will get quite a bit of play. The hole in the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2-5/16" Ball - 2" Rise or 4" Drop - 7,500 lbs item # C45042 accepts a 5/8" pin. I recommend purchasing a Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock - 2" Hitches - Chrome item # C72KR. This will secure your ball mount inside your hitches receiver and keep it from being...
