When replacing gas shock on your vehicle or RV, you will want to make sure you are buying a replacement with the exact same extended length, compressed length, and pounds of force. This information is usually printed on the shock. Lengths are measured from the center of the ball joint used for mounting. If you are planning on installing gas shocks on something for the first time, identifying the shock you need requires fairly complex initial calculations, so be sure to do your research to avoid purchasing a shock that will not fit your application.

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this JR Products 20" long gas shock. Now this is a nice, quick and easy replacement for any worn or broken gas shock that you might have. This will replace a gas shock on multiple applications, like on your RV or trailer doors, storage compartment doors, truck bed covers, or even fold down camper beds. This shock is designed with a nice high quality black nitride shaft and includes the plastic ends on each end with the locking clips to secure it to the mounting ball.

This is designed to connect to a 10mm size mounting ball, and it installs easily in minutes, no special tools required. Wanted to zoom in just to show you the ends. You can see there's where the ball sock will slip onto the ball. And on top is this clip. The way you install it, what you'll do is take a little small tip screwdriver, slide it under this clip, and then just pry that clip up. You don't have to remove the clip all the way, just pry it up enough to relieve the pressure, and then install that over your 10mm ball.

Once it's over the ball, then just push that clip all the way back down. It'll clip into place, and it secures that end to the ball. And you'll do the same on the other end. It's the same way. Now, when you do install this, you do want the inner rod right here facing down, and it's also recommended to replace these gas shocks in pairs.

Now the extended length, which would be measured from the center of this ball hole to the center of this one, on this one center to center is right at 20". The compressed length, if it's all the way compressed would be 11.41". And the output force on the shock is 150 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the JR Products 20" long gas shock.

The Stabilus shock holding the 22" door of our bumper pull trailer open was weak. Mild wind would push it shut. This shock fit right onto the existing ball joints. A small blade screwdriver pried the "c" clip back, allowing me to slip the socket over the ball, and the clip snapped into place. Maybe 30 seconds and the shock was installed.

The biggest challenge was determining what force I needed in the replacement. The existing shock had the model information scraped away where it rubbed on the door threshold. No where could I find on the etrailer site what force a small door shock should be. I ended up chatting with an RV service tech I know, who looked it up in his parts catalog. Turns out 10 lb force is standard except for large RV doors. I would suggest etrailer.com add this information on their online catalog. Maybe it's there and I couldn’t' find it? "Gas shock force needed for RV doors."

  • 20 Inch RV Gas Shocks With at Least 100 lbs of Force
Since you mentioned 80 lb shocks being inadequate, I'll go ahead and give you gas shocks with at least 100 lbs of force that are 20 inches long. I don't have any way of knowing what mounting hardware you have, but I can tell you each of these shocks attach to 10mm ball sockets. - 150 lb Force: Gas Shock # 372-2300-150 - 120 lb Force: Gas Shock # 372-2300-120 - 110 lb Force: Gas Shock # 372-7903

  • Recommended Gas Struts and Mounting Brackets for a Custom Tailgate On a 1991 Jeep Wrangler
With the DeeZee Tailgate Assist Custom Tailgate-Lowering System for Classic Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra # DZ43100 being custom fit for certain YMM vehicles, I'd actually recommend using a standard gas strut # 372-2300-150 instead. This shock has a compression force of 150 lbs, an extended length of 20", and a compressed length of 11.41". This strut uses a standard 10mm ball socket to connect, so if you don't have any the Gas Shock Mounting Brackets # 372BR-12553 is what you'll need.
