Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer For 5/16" Chain

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Loops. So these are gonna be a weld-on product. And the nice thing about these, what sets it apart from all the others is just the fact that we're gonna be able to remove this little clevis pin right here. So, if we want to replace a chain or maybe we just wanna install it and then paint it to match our trailer, all we gotta do is just get a little tool in there, might be able to do with your hands so you can pull this out. It would be a lot easier with the tool, but you can pull this little pin out, and remove your chains really, really easily. So, a lot of the other ones that are weld-on: One, you're gonna have to get the chain in there, and then you're gonna have to weld it on.

So, it's just a little bit more of a hassle to install. And then once it's on there, and we wanna paint it to match our trailer, the chains are gonna get a little painted too. So, this is gonna be a great way to kind of just make it a little bit easier on yourself. You can install it without the chains on there, and you can paint it, then you can put your chains on. So if you wind that, switches out your chains, for whatever reason, it's gonna be the easiest way to do that.

If you're gonna go with this set up, just make sure you have a 5/16 inch chain, and then whatever length that you have. We do have a lot of different chains on our website. So just go ahead and grab that. The clevis pin is gonna be zinc coated, so it's not gonna rust away. So even if you don't end up painting it, which you could do whatever, it's not gonna rust away even if you don't.

It is made of forged steel, the whole entire little retainer, and this is gonna be pretty much ready to paint after you weld it on. Just make sure whenever you are doing welds, that you have somebody who knows what they're doing to get these things installed. As far as dimensions go, that's gonna be about four inches in length and depending on what kind of angle you go with, it's going to stick out a little bit lower than your tongue, depending on what size tubing you use. So that's just gonna be variable depending on how you set it up. But for this one in particular, it's only adding about two inches from the bottom of our tube here.

What the thickest part, without the clevis pin from outside to outside is about an inch and a half. And then on the inside, it's about three quarters of an inch. I would definitely put this on the heavier duty side when it comes to safety chain retainers. And the best thing about this is, we're really not gonna have to use much energy at all, to swap out our chains. So, if you are doing that quite often, or you're breaking chains, these are gonna be the ones you want to go with. And that'll do it for a look at the Buyers Products Safety Chain Retainers..

This is the way to go for attaching safety chains to your trailer. I used to weld the safety chains directly to the trailer but recently discovered that is not "legal" This bracket is legal and also allows replacing the chain(s) in the future without welding. This bracket provides ample length to make a good weld. Highly recommend.

This part was exactly what I needed, and I was impressed to find it available on etrailer.com! I welded the Buyers Products Safety Chain Retainers to the gate of my dump truck, and they have held-up well with repeated heavy use. Thank you for coming through with the odd parts I need, etrailer!

Very easy and clean way to put safety chains on a trailer.

by:

the best way I know of to mount safety chains

These safety chain retainers are a life saver!!! Shortly after installing them on my welding trailer (witch weighs roughly 6,000 lbs to 7,000 lbs) i was towing it home after a job late in the evening and hit a bump and the trailer coupler malfunctioned and the trailer unhooked from the truck and luckily the safety chains did their job and no one was hurt but the chains were damaged. BUT since i installed these safety chain retainers i was able to swap out the chains and fixed the hitch without any problem!!! I would recommend them to anyone how is installing or replacing safety chains on any trailer!

@Joshua That's great to hear, thanks!

This is a great product.
It’s much
safer than welding bent metal to a trailer for safety chain attachments.
I really like that the chains are removable/replaceable with this setup.
Highly recommended!

by:

Of the various solutions commonly used for attaching safety chains to a trailer this is one of few that comes close to the SWL of safety chain or does not degrade the chain it’s self. A popular method is to mount the chain link with a bolt and washer. Even with a Grade 8 bolt this loads the bolt in a cantilevered single shear imposing bending stresses into the threaded portion of the bolt threaded into base material. This forms a weak link. This link provides a strong double shear joint. The weld tab provides more than adequate space for weld to equal the capacity of the pin joint and chain.

I am using these on a gooseneck trailer and it is a great product. I like these safety chain retainers because they are strong and give the trailer a clean professional look. Not only that, when using these retainers, the safety chains can easily be removed and replaced if needed.

I love these weld on anchors. Provides a cleaner better looking product. Plus it’s lot simpler to replace a chain if one gets damaged.

by:

The saftey chain weld on anchors were just perfect , and heavy for the trailer I was building . Thanks for a great product.

by:

Pretty simple device so not much could go wrong. But with all the low quality products these days, I wouldn't be surprised.
This welded on and painted nicely. My chains fit as advertised per the size with no binding. I might have replaced the cotter pin with a heavier one, but don't remeber for sure.

by:

Used these on a Ag Mech show trailer. Received multiple praises from other competitors and the judges. Have purchased more for upcoming projects

  • Mounting Points For Buyers Products 3/8" Trailer Safety Chains
For the Buyers Products 3/8" x 35" Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain w/ Clevis Hook # 337B03835SC I recommend using either the Buyers Products Safety Chain Clip # 337SC38B or Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer For 3/8" Chain # 3375471001. These are specially designed to work with the 3/8" chain and ensure that it can handle the weight properly. • Mounting Hardware for 48" Long Safety Chain with 7/16" S-Hook # TCTSCG30-748-04x2
The 48" Long Safety Chain with 7/16" S-Hook # TCTSCG30-748-04x2 will accept a 3/8" bolt through the opening of the chain link. You will need to ensure the bolt you use has a shear strength which is higher than the 5,000lb weight capacity of the chain. It is recommended to use either a Weld On Clip # 337SC38B or a Chain Retainer # 3375471000 with safety chains.

  • Weld On Safety Chain Retainer
You should not weld the chain directly to the trailer. There is no federal law about weight or size rating on safety chains. You will need to check with your local DMV office for the requirements in your state. If you are needing a mounting point for safety chains I recommend the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer For 5/16" Chain item # 3375471000. It has a removable clevis pin for ease of painting and chain replacement. Each retainer is rated to 10,000 lbs. They are sold individually...

The Roadmaster 22" Safety Cable Extension # RM-650648-22 will fit with the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471000. I went out to our warehouse to verify this and included a couple pictures that show these two products together. The pin on the chain retainer is held in with a clevis pin that is easily removed and will allow you to attach the safety chain easily and there is plenty of room for the chain to move in the retainer.

  • Could Trailer Safety Chains be Bolted to Trailer Frame
Yes you could use a long enough and correct diameter nut and bolt to secure the safety chains to your trailer if you wanted or you could use the Buyers Products weld on safety chain retainer # 3375471000 that you referenced as well.

There are a handful of different retainer styles out there to match different thicknesses of chains and cables that we have to offer. So the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471000 would be geared towards a 5/16" diameter (or 1/4") chain/cable while the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471001 would be geared towards a slightly larger 3/8" diameter chain/cable. • Is There a Bolt On Bracket For Safety Chains on a Trailer
I may have a solution for you but I'm not aware of a bolt on safety chain bracket or clevis that can be used. However you can simply take a safety chain set (or your existing chains) like the 42" Long Safety Chain with 3/8" Clevis Hook (15,000 lbs) # 337BSC3842 and use a grade 8 bolt to attach the chains directly to the trailer with a washer holding the bolt through the last chain link. • How To Attach Safety Chains To Trailer Tongue
I am not aware of a bolt-on version of the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer part # 3375471000. However, if all you were wanting to do is mount your safety chains to the tongue of your trailer then you will just simply do so by running a grade 8 bolt though both the chain and frame like you can see in the two attached photos.
