Hidden Cross Tube for a Clean, Factory Look

The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. The hitch's cross tube bolts onto your vehicle's frame, behind your rear bumper. No drilling or welding is required. Once the hitch is installed, only the receiver will be visible beneath your bumper. This means that your vehicle can maintain its stylish, from-the-factory look, and you won't have to do any major modifications to its body or frame.

Eco-Friendly Material

With a combination of aerospace-grade aluminum, steel, and stainless steel, each EcoHitch is made of a strong metal alloy that will withstand the test of time. The lightweight alloy is composed of recycled materials. Traditional steel hitch manufacturing can use coal or oil, which can contribute to harmful gas emissions. The EcoHitch's recycled materials limit the carbon footprint during manufacturing, so you get a sturdy trailer hitch while also helping the environment.

Rigorous Strength Testing Ensures Durability

This EcoHitch trailer hitch is tested for durability and sturdiness. Using Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA), individual points of stress on the hitch can be detected and remedied. Designers can accurately test the hitch to ensure that it will meet or exceed SAE J684 standards. The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is carefully researched and strength tested for a durable, high-quality hitch that can resist damage while on the road.

I've had the EcoHitch on my vehicle now for about a year (and about 30,000 miles - I commute 200 miles to work each day). My goal was to continue to use my Thule Vertex Bike Rack. It does work with that rack, perfectly. It seems pretty robust (I've been able to step on it when I had to clear some heavy snow off the roof of my car) and after a year, I haven't had to make any adjustments. I think it blends into the car nicely. And, it did not impact my gas mileage (~40 mpg highway). I will say - I found out almost instantly that this will change the way you drive the vehicle (at least in Colorado) because it takes very little to bottom out. I've left some grooves in friends' pavement after backing out of driveways and I have hit coming in to parking lots, going over speed bumps, and if there are any drainage ditches that have a steeper angle. Add the bike rack - I've hit that pretty good too (thankfully, not with the bike). To fix this issue, I decided earlier this year to lift the back end of the car by having the towing springs installed to lift the clearance by about 2". They get installed in May, so I'll update this to see if that resolves the bottoming out on the hitch. I didn't originally rate this product because honestly I was so angry at how poor the installation went. The instructions were difficult to follow (complicated by how I then found corrected instructions online) and I was sent the wrong bolts (<-- if that had been my only problem, no biggie. My friend Ace Hardware is just down the street). Something I felt should take maybe a day if I was super careful ended up taking 2 because the instruction mixup (I put the hitch on twice. Second time was able to install my bumper again too. Ha). Despite my installation woes - I think this is a great product for the car. I really hope the towing springs solve my bottoming out (I'm not looking to be an SUV - just be able to pull into my parking lot at work with the bike rack on the vehicle ha).

Comments
So Ive had the hitch on with the towing springs installed for about a year now and what a difference! I havent hit the hitch or bike rack since installing the towing springs, and I took it up into the mountains several times last summer. The hitch has been solid and sturdy, works perfectly with my bike rack and I think it blends in with the vehicle pretty well. I recommend, but also recommend thinking about the towing springs if you decide to install the hitch on this vehicle.

This is by far the best hotch for my Jetta Sportwagen TDI! No drilling, bolts into the frame, and nice clean, low-profile look. The 2" receiver makes it easy to use a bike rack or other accessories. I didn't use the specified measurements to cut out the bumper cover, I cut mine a bit closer with a good reference point to measure from. I'm happy with it!

The hitch works great! I must admit I had never removed a bumper and was scared of doing damage but the video install was perfect and easy to follow. It pulls our Space Trailer great. I am thinking of adding the air bags to level the car with a load.

I have been very satisfied with this hitch. It was the only 2" hitch that I could find for my 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. I was willing to spend more to get this 2" hitch so that it would accept the bike rack and cargo carrier that I already owned without using an adapter. The hitch is very durable looking and performing. I installed it myself while referencing the etrailer installation video on the product page. I like the clean look of the hitch with its hidden cross tube. When trimming the fascia, I trimmed more than needed when following the supplied directions. If I were to install this hitch again, I would switch the length and width of the trimming dimensions. I ended up with more of a square cutout that was the larger of the two dimensions. Reference my photos. The finished job still looks attractive. Later, I installed a trailer wiring kit from etrailer, and the added width did leave me a nice path for routing. Trim seal for the edges was provided, but I opted not to use it.

High quality product at a fair price. Installation went smoothly for the most part. My previous car had a custom hitch that cost a bit more than this etrailer hitch (same price, but in 2004 dollars). When I got my current car, I called the place that did that hitch, but they had stopped making custom hitches. Fortunately, they pointed me to 306-X7284. They said if I ordered it, they would install it for $400. Yikes! Having just spent money on a new car, I didn't want to have to cough up more than necessary to get it ready for my bike rack. So, I watched the provided video, and read the reviews and figured I could handle it. The job wasn't too bad. I was able to do it in about 2.5 hours. I just followed the instructions on the video. The bolt fisher is included, which helps a lot. A note for anyone else who doesn't have a garage or lift. I have a gravel driveway and I didn't have any trouble installing the hitch while the car was sitting on the ground. Having it lifted up might reduce wear and tear on the installer, but it's not necessary. I just used the box the hitch came in to lie on while I worked, and it was fine. And, a note for anyone who will need to do the job without assistance. The only tricky part was getting the first bolt in (the one that goes where the bumper attaches). I had to use something under the hitch to support the unattached side while I put the first bolt in, otherwise I couldn't get the bolt to line up. It was fairly easy, just use a box or whatever you have handy. The fascia is large, but very light, so I didn't have any trouble handling it alone.

Another great purchase from etrailer. They had it in stock, shipped it out the same day, arrived just 2 days later. This is a good quality hitch, in terms of both design and fabrication. The fact that it bolts into the factory bumper mount holes, and then allows reinstallation of the bumper is very clever. This will be used to tow our Scamp13 behind a new (to us) 2012 VW SportWagen. An initial tow test on various local roads and highways shows no problems. The hitch insert is a little rattly on turns & bumps, but that is par for the 2" receiver. As mentioned by others, the hardware that comes with the hitch is nothing great. I substituted nylock nuts on the 7/16 bolts, which allowed deleting the failure-prone split lockwashers. The supplied M8 bolts were replaced by VW corrosion resistant flange-head bolts. The instructions also call for 60ft-lbs of torque on the 7/16UNC bolts, which is far above the typical rating for that size bolt. The instructions have a diagram of how to cut out the bottom of the rear bumper cover, which clearly shows the correct shape & location, but the numbers superimposed on the drawing are reversed. It should be 4" wide, and 5" deep. Allow a few hours for installation to remove and reinstall the rear mudflaps, taillights, bumper skin. The hitch itself bolts on in a few minutes.

I'm only giving 4 stars, because I did not receive the hardware package with the hitch. It took a couple of weeks to get it, but it was provided without charge to me, and outside that, install was easy following the directions, and has worked well. I still have to install the light kit, but overall this was a good deal, and aside from the missing hardware, I'm very happy and appreciate that they sent me the hardware without a ton of hassle. Good customer service. Thank you

After a year, I did get the light kit installed, directives on that eh... but [online] videos were much better, and I was able to tow a 6x12 trailer from Chicago to Las Vegas in January without issue, so yes, very happy with the kit, and overall service.

Couldn't be happier! The install was actually very simple and straight forward, despite being classified as a more difficult install. The instructional video provided by etrailer.com was possibly the best tutorial video I've EVER followed. I'm really glad that I decided to get the EcoHitch over the less expensive, easier-to-install alternatives. 100% worth the extra expense and effort.

I am really happy with my new EcoHitch. I installed it myself and it took about 3 1/2 hours from setup to finish. Found minimal wiggle room when installing bolts through bumper, spacer and hitch. I got them all started a few threads in and then did about 4 turns at a time each rotating between them until tight. Watching trailer install video was extremely helpful, thanks !

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

After stalking this product at etrailer for about a year, I finally bought it. 100% worth the cost, and etrailer's service is as good as everyone says it is. The install videos are THE BEST. Here are my thoughts on self installation: 1. YES YOU CAN totally do this yourself with pretty basic tools. A torque wrench will help. 2. WASH YOUR CAR first, especially the wheelwells and the point where the tip of the bumper cover meets the wheelwell and the sheet metal of the fender. 3. LOTS OF LIGHT is important. I had to keep the garage door closed (January in Connecticut) but wish I'd had the natural light an open door would have provided. Flashlights and work lights were cumbersome. 4, That little clip at the tip of bumper cover at the wheelwell is [trouble], was the part of the install [that was the hardest], and crusty dirt made things harder. Consider picking up new ones and trim removal tools from that big online auction site first -- look for "push pin clip fender" or similar for minimal cost. 5. Be careful with the flanged nuts on the tail light removal. My fat fingers dropped one down into the abyss of the body. I'm sure I could dig it out if I took apart the whole cargo area similar to the trailer brake light install, but I wasn't up for that much effort. 6. TRUST THE OTHER COMMENTERS ABOUT A DEEPER CUTOUT on the bumper cover. Add that extra inch of depth into the bumper cover to accommodate the hitch, maybe an extra 1.25 inches. I doubted and only added 1/2 inch. And then I had to remove the bumper cover and re-cut. Twice. I used an oscillating tool with a fine-toothed semicircular blade (instead of a rotary tool) for making the cutout itself, and it was terrific. 7. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on the cutout trim to soften it up a bit and it will be much, much easier to get it to bend correctly for the corners of the cutout -- especially if you're in a cold New England garage in the winter. 8. I did not need to lower the exhaust -- I did the "just bend the heat shield" trick from the etrailer install video and it worked just fine. 9. Humblebrag alert: I did not need ramps or jackstands or anything because my JSW is lifted! If you haven't done this yet, you MUST. JSWs have a saggy butt problem when loaded down, right? I got my local independent mechanic to install FWD Tiguan springs up front and Euro-spec JSW towing springs in the back. That, combined with taller 215/55-16 tires has my car lifted about 1.75 inches in the front and 2 inches in the rear. Do this. No more scraping the chin or rear on steep driveways, parking lot bumpers, or dirt roads. It will also provide additional clearance for your hitch-mounted cargo basket.

The hitch was time consuming to install but definitely the right choice. Very clean installation and substantial appearance and sold performance! The information and videos provided by etrailer were all very thorough, Information and helpful. Customer service was quick to respond and follow up and was also helpful. I will definitely return to etrailer and would highly recommend them for any towing related goods or information!

Excellent hitch. Pretty sure it is same quality as the European OEM. Installation was a breeze. Even includes the fishing wire you need to get the bolts into the frame. You do need to trim a little more off the bumper then the template /instructions suggests to actually get it to fit, but it has been rock solid. Pulls my 16' fishing boat and pontoon boat like a champ. Having a full receiver instead of just a ball makes it so much easier to flip between 1 7/8 and 2" balls, plus the travel add on tray and bike racks. So happy went with it over the other options.

Ford Edge

The construction and the finish of the hitch is very good but... The mounting plates are about an inch too narrow overall. The mounting holes are elongated but on my car the bolts ended up being at the very outside edge of the slots, making bolting up the unit kind of a tricky affair. The unit seems very sturdy and the fact that you don't see anything other than the receiver at the bottom of the facia is a definite plus.

- 306-X7284
by:

The installation was a little more complicated than it appeared to be from viewing the website. We had to drop the bumper on the Jetta. However once finished it is a clean look with only the receiver showing below the bumper. The hitch is only used for holding a bike rack. So i can't comment on its usefulness as a towing device.

Install was quick. Simple. Great product Only small issue; I had to go to the hardware store because the bag of bolts that came with the hitch called for 5 bolts but mine only had 2 bolts. No big deal, just $2 at the hardware store and 15 mins of my time

Since I just installed this product, that is about all I can talk about. Everything was done per the video recommendations. Everything went smooth except for the suggested dimensions of the cutout in the bumper facia which had to be modified (slightly larger). Other than that everything went in according to how it’s shown on the video. Thanks etrailer.

I purchased this hitch for my 2010 VW TDI Jetta Sportwagen and installed it this weekend. The listing did not show it fit the TDI but Tim assured me it was the right part. The installation was pretty straightforward and not too hard. Make sure you watch the video they made prior to installation as it will save you some time. I'm happy with how the hitch looks and works for my bike rack. Thanks for a quality product.

The hitch install was easy and fits as described. The only issue was trimming the plastic. The 4.5" dimension given is not enough and I had to trim an additional 1" for it to fit the receiver. Overall, its a good, clean fit. No ground clearance reduction with this hitch.

- 306-X7284
by:
2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen

Hitch works great, very low profile. Installation is definitely easier with 2 people. The hardware that comes with is ok, but not great. Also as others have noted, the hole to cut in the fascia is a bit larger than the instructions state. I would do a dry fit, and be especially aware of the throat depth as I had to extend it back about an inch to clear it. The video is a great how to though and really hits most of the highlights. Be aware you may have mudflaps which will mean a few more T30/T25s to remove.

This is a really great hitch. The package got here earlier than they said. I installed mine onto a 2012 VW TDI sport wagon. I am going to preface my negative comments by saying these are small discrepancies and did not alter the outcome of the hitch. The video instructions were great. They cleared up many questions the paper left. The issues I had were; my hardware sizes and quantities did not match the video nor the paper instructions (I had what I needed in the garage). Secondly there were no spacers included in my kit. When it was fully assembled, there was just slight contact with hitch and car frame (no where near the issue they had on the video) so I was able to assemble it with out the spacers. Lastly, I put it all back together and the plastic bumper was pushing hard on the hitch. I had to cut another 1/2-3/4in out of the bumper, after that it fit perfect and you could not tell any difference. Positives: - 2” receiver - Really well made - Hides away - Heavy duty - assembly is really straight forward. Good etrailer assembly video! Negative: - Pretty heavy - Very pricy $$$ (way more than I wanted to spend but I was stuck needing one) - I had to cut an extra 1/2”-3/4” out of my bumper (length wise) due to some binding.

- 306-X7284
by:
2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen

The build quality is good and it feels like it will be sturdier than the cheaper options. However, if the spacers are needed it pushes the crash bar out so much that I can feel it pushing on the bumper cover. This makes it difficult to perfectly line up the corners of the bumper where it meets the rear quarter panels. More importantly, I'm worried the slightest tap in a parking lot will cause the crash bar to break through the bumper.

The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7284 is going to give you approximately an inch and a half more ground clearance on your 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen than the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24866. In regards to weight, the Draw-Tite weighs approximately 23 lbs while the EcoHitch is approximately 30 lbs. Between the two, since the EcoHitch has the best clearances, and is the only hitch for your Jetta with a 2 inch receiver it is definitely the best option....

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen for 4 Bike Rack
To carry a 4 bike rack with your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen you would need to have a 2 inch hitch installed like the EcoHitch part # 306-X7284 which is a confirmed fit. The 1-1/4 inch hitches that fit your vehicle are limited to carrying only 2 bikes. But with the EcoHitch installed you could use a 4 bike rack like the Swagman Trailhead # S63380 and you'd be set.

  • How Much Ground Clearance Does the EcoHitch Have When Installed on a 2012 Jetta Sportswagen
The EcoHitch # 306-X7284 has an installed height of 12 inches to the top of the receiver. With this being a 2 inch receiver, the bottom of the receiver would be slightly under 10 inches. The lip around the outside of the receiver opening is roughly a 1/2 inch, so you would be looking at 9 1/2 inches for total ground clearance.

  • Choosing Hitch Installation on 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI and 2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0L TDI
In a light-duty towing application like yours, to be perfectly honest, if it were my money I would choose the lowest cost hitch for whichever car you choose to equip with a hitch. All have identical capacities. For the 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI we have two compatible hitches, the Draw-Tite 1-1/4-inch Class I Sportframe Trailer Hitch # 24866 which will install on the Jetta's frame, and the 2-inch EcoHitch # 306-X7284 which does install at the bumper mounts. Both are shown on the linked...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2013 VW Jetta SportWagen
The EcoHitch # 306-X7284 is a great choice! In order to add wiring to tow your boat (those are really cool, by the way), you'll want to use the Tekonsha # 119179KIT which comes with a circuit protected Modu-Lite converter to help protect the electrical components on your vehicle. I recommend using the Tekonsha over the Curt # C59496 harnesses because the converter is a little bit more reliable and since you're likely going to have LED lights on your trailer, the slight difference in amp...

  • How To Use a 2 Inch Bike Rack On a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI
For starters, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Euro Drawbar part # C114122 is not a fit for your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. The comparable option we have is Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24866. However, you cannot use a class I 1-1/4" trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter like part # MT70032 because all of the adapters require a class II hitch with a 1-1/4" opening. If you were to use the two together the weight capacity of your trailer hitch will...

  • Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TID
If you're looking for a US manufactured hitch for your 2011 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI, I'd recommend the EcoHitch # 306-X7284. This is the only US manufactured hitch we offer that's a fit for your vehicle. For a trailer wiring harness, I'd recommend the Tekonsha # 119179KIT. I've linked to installation videos for both the hitch and the wiring. You'll also need a ball mount like # D-28, a hitch pin, # PC3 and a trailer ball like # 19261 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Fit for 2014 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI
There is a trailer wiring harness for your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, though the part you mentioned is not a fit for your Jetta. There isn't a plug-in option for your SportWagen so you will need to hardwire in the Upgraded Circuit Protected ModuLite with 4-Pole Flat, Hardwire Kit, and Circuit Tester # 119179KIT. I have added a link to a video showing this harness being installed on a '14 VW Jetta SportWagen. If you also need a hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver...

  • How to Transport Dirt Bike with 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI
I understand that you want to use a hitch-mount dirt bike carrier like # MT70101 or # UF48-979033 on your 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI but the limiting factor is that the hitches made for your TDI, such as EcoHitch # 306-X7284, are rated for only 200-lbs tongue weight. The rated tongue weight (TW), which is downward force on the hitch, must be enough for the combined weight of the bike (225-lbs) and the carrier it is on, which is another 50-lbs for both # MT70101 and # UF48-979033....
