Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

This product is very well built. The instructions are phenomenal! The videos helped a lot. The fit of this product on my Mazda 3 is very precise and does not interfere with any of the other components or exhaust. I was able to install it myself using floor ramps, but by myself it did take some effort to position things. Some of the powdercoat paint was chipped off from the bottom, I hope it does not rust, but I would be interested to know if there is a touch up paint kit available to prevent rust. 693242

Comments
We do not offer a touch up paint kit, but the hitch manufacturers do recommend using a good high quality spray paint to touch up their hitches as needed. I have also included a help article that we have for rust prevention for your reference.

I'm using this hitch only to carry my bike carrier for transport of my bikes, no towing. Initial order was with Amazon, they couldn't deliver, so after a couple weeks and no shipment I cancelled and ordered direct with etrailer. Even etrailer had a delayed shipping of around a week to ten days once I ordered. I can't imagine this hitch for my car is in such demand, so mostly likely a short run, not high demand item. I can't blame a business for working on the high demand, high quantity items first, if that was the case. Product fit pretty good, instructions talk about threaded nut/hole up on sides of sub-frame that is covered with tape but in my case it was covered with undercoating (new car stuff, not aftermarket) and tape. Took me 15 -20 minutes to discover where the threaded mounting hole was up on the sides of sub-frame. The muffler does make slight contact with the hitch now at various times, I'll loosen the mounting hardware on the hitch sometime and see if I can move it enough to prevent that contact. Otherwise, decent fit. I did remove my muffler and for me, working off the floor of my garage, it seemed easier, overall. I did support the single pipe coming back to my muffler while the muffler was off the car. 172834

Comments
I loosened up the four mounting bolts, used a good size hammer and a block of wood and I was able to move the hitch towards the back of my car so the muffler no longer vibrates against the hitch. Sweet! With that I give the hitch five stars now!!

Overall a good purchase and experience from ETRAILER. The hitch arrived somewhat loosely packed and there was some minor scratches and chips. Not a deal breaker, but I think etrailer buys a pallet of these hitches and repacked them, so the fault is not on the manufacturer. It took some time to figure out which holes to fit the bolts to and getting the hitch into position is TIGHT! I ended up removing the muffler which gave me a lot more space. The real issue was the hitch was slightly bent and would not fit between the frame rails. A quick call to etrailer and they advised how to proceed, shout out to Molly S. for the help. The hitch fit great with zero interference and a quick coat of black spray covered up the minor damage. Very happy with the fit and customer experience! 557763

Hitch fits perfectly. Just put it on. Little tricky getting the back muffler mounts back on behind the hitch bar but still doable. Soap and water helps a lot. The bolt wires are a life saver. 392065

Install was really easy. I was lucky to have a friend with a lift. The 2 of us got this installed in under 30 minutes. We only dropped one side of the exhaust and then could slide the hitch in place, with a little pulling on the underside. We did this "hot" - right after the vehicle had been driven 30minutes. Everything lined up easily. The instructions did not show how to use the threaded wire system, so it was good I had previously installed a hitch that used the threading method (find a video of a similar product and watch it - brilliant system but no plainly obvious the first time you touch it). 257612

Comments
The hitch rattles against the exhaust occasionally. Only during acceleration, warm, at about 2500RPM. I imagine I could adjust the location of the hitch a bit but I havent tried yet. Otherwise, the hitch has been working fine.

Thanks for your recent 1 year follow-up. If is not uncommon for there to be some rattling associated with the installation of a trailer hitch. There are several options that can remedy the exhaust to hitch rattling issue. Please see the helpful article that I have included for additional information.

I haven't used the hitch yet but I have installed it and the first thing that needs to be stated is that I did NOT have to mess with my exhaust to install this hitch. It just rolled right into place. Job one was to peal away the tape that covers the horizontal bolt hole and to remove a little of the coating in the rear corners where the arm will bind up if that extra coating isn't removed. The rest of the install went smooth as can be so I don't see much point in explaining the install further. FWIW The 1 1/4 x 2" adapter with a 4 1/2 raise PN 70355 won't fit this hitch (The stop won't allow the insert in far enough for a pin to secure the adapter.) I'll be talking to the nice folks at etrailer about how to proceed. 211087

Fit like butter. Looks stealth (I removed all labels). Watch the official install video. Do exactly what he does. I used an old laptop bag strap and a floor jack to control the exhaust. I would recommend ramps over jack stands for the extra working room. 645303

2014 Volkswagen Passat

My third hitch from etrailer: 2000 VW Passat, 2006 Mazda 3 Sedan, now 2014 Mazda 3s GT. In all three, the plans and fit-up were excellent. For the 2014 Mazda 3s GT, I bought the 24914 Draw-tite hitch, with 3493 draw bar and 19256 ball. With the standard chrome exhaust tips, I had to lower the muffler for the hitch mounts to clear the exhaust. This was the most difficult part -- windex for lubrication and a strong grip pulled off the four rubber muffler hangars, lowering the muffler on a floor jack about 6". The hitch then fit perfectly to the mounting holes, and the part metric, part SAE hardware provided was high grade and correct. Fishing the mounting bolts through the frame members was the simplest part. Tightened nuts, raised the muffler, and then lubed and pushed on the hangars again. Done in about two hours. Four ibuprofen in anticipation of sore muscles. Nothing new. Top of the draw bar at the hitch is at 11" from the ground, putting the drawbar top at 13-1/4". I installed the 118405 wiring harness without problems, choosing to route the power wire for the switch "converter" along under the interior trim under the doors and into the interior fuse box compartment, then into the engine compartment by a single hole punctured through an existing rubber nipple just above the wiring feedthrough on the firewall. I changed the ring connector to a 1/4" ring connector to match the existing 6 mm post on the Mazda battery terminal block (thank Mazda for the ready-made posts for accessories). Works! Once again, etrailer gave me all I needed in one shipment, and everything fit as planned. No problems pulling my lightweight sailboat trailer and utility trailer. Another satisfied customer! 510110

Customer service, shipping, and pricing from etrailer.com is five stars. This review is for the hitch itself. I especially appreciated the etrailer install video, which gave me the confidence to install this hitch myself. I drive a 2018 Mazda3 Hatchback and the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" (#24914) fit perfectly. The necessary attachment holes were pre-drilled, as described. I followed the directions in the install video that etrailer published. It was spot on. My Dad and I opted NOT to lower the exhaust and while I think install might have gone a little bit smoother if we had, we managed to get everything properly in place without dropping the exhaust or damaging the car. I did have to remove tape from the pre-drilled holes as etrailer showed in their video. I think it took us about an hour or so to install but that was because I reviewed the install video at nearly every step to make sure we were doing it right. I would say that I could have installed by myself but the second set of hands to hold up the hitch while I put in the screws and eyes to double check the install was helpful. As of writing this review the hitch has been on my car for nearly a week. I use it with the Kuat Transfer 2 bike rack, and have so far had no problems with the hitch. I've driven approximately 200 highway miles and perhaps 20 miles on rough city roads with the hitch installed and loaded with the bike rack (and bikes at times) and have heard no rattling or seen evidence that the hitch is anything but stable. The only reason I took off a star is strictly cosmetic. I chose the Draw-tite hitch over another option because the Draw-tite sits right under the bumper and is lower "profile" than the other option I was considering. I personally wanted my hitch to be as inconspicuous as possible. As etrailer says in their install/review video, this hitch does fit the Mazda 3 incredibly well, sitting right underneath the bumper. That said, it's not a "hidden" hitch and you CAN see the cross bar beneath the bumper. This obviously does not affect performance and is perhaps a minor complaint and a personal preference. Others might not care at all about being able to see the cross-bar and receiver. 635092

My etrailer experience has been very positive. Before placing my order for a hitch, I had questions about the product. I received very timely answers from the knowledgable staff. I placed my order and received the hitch 1 day sooner than estimated. The easy to follow instructions allowed the hitch to be installed in less than 45 minutes. I think it could actually be done in less than 30 minutes. 148530

Great purchase overall. Shipped the morning after order placed and arrived a couple days later in perfect condition. Install went smooth after watching video. Paper instructions are misleading about which frame hole to use for pull-through bolts so I had to move them. Total 2 hrs install time working alone with no lift and not hurrying. You do need to lower exhaust which took some muscle to remove from hangers. Video has good tips on how. Attached pic shows a little rust but that's fom my bike rack - the hitch finish was perfect. 628762

2017 Mazda 3

I'm a novice user, never had hitch rack before. I used to carry my bikes on a roof rack, or once with strap-on trunk rack. Both methods damage the car paint. This time I decided to go with hitch mounted bike rack. I have new Mazda 3 hatchback 2017. I called my Mazda dealer service department, but they said that Mazda do not provide a hitch receiver for my model. By chance, I stumbled on etrailer site and found that such receivers exist. Site is informative and has good video reviews of their products, including impressive tests footage. That assured me in quality of their products and services. Etrailer recommended to me hitch receiver model 24914. Manufacturer description and customer reviews were very helpful to assess scope of work needed to mount the receiver and how to locate hidden mounting holes. Some users would report 30 min do it yourself installation job. Named receiver was in stock and I got it in four days Ground from Mid-west to NJ. I was greatly impressed with packing job by etrailer, part was safely secured inside the shipping box resulted in no scratches on the part paint, good job shipping department! It was raining here, so assembly from the wet ground was not an option. First, I went to the local professional hitch company. They gave me quote of $74 and hour wait time, but scheduled for the next day. I stopped to get gas and noticed a free bay at gas station mechanic. I asked him to help me to mount my receiver, he was very friendly and my car went up on a lift. I immediately found hidden behind coating horizontal mounting holes, then we eased in the receiver to see an interference with exhaust box and pipes. It went in easy, no exhaust dismount was needed! :) The receiver kit had special steel wire guide wires, I threaded them to the vertical carriage bolts and mechanic in no time pulled bolts and plates into the mounting holes. All four bolts were tightened in no time. It took us 15 min to fully mount the receiver, thanks to good, informative manufacturer instruction sheet and exhaustive customer reviews, thank you reviewers! Mechanic even refused to charge me for the job, but I slipped some candy money to him anyway. The receiver has an ample clearance (~an inch) to the exhaust ( see pic), I hear no rattles while driving around. My car is snow white, I was afraid, that black receiver will clash, but installed, it is recessed and doesn't stick out at all (I only have pic with rack attached to receiver, sorry). I'm very happy with etailer services, and greatly admire ingenuity of the receiver manufacturer who figured out how to design a complex part and the product quality which fits like a glove! I attached three pictures: Two receiver attachment points on one side Clearance between receiver and left exhaust pipe Receiver with 59400 etrailer bike rack mounted 512646

This is the 2nd hitch I have ordered from etrailer. Both hitches fit perfectly and were very easy to attach. The first one I had my son help me put on and this one for my Mazda I put on by myself. The quality of the product appears excellent and the ease of installation was excellent. I can't believe how easy it was and how great it looks. I am using this on my Mazda to hold a bike carrier. Highly, highly recommend this product!!!! The delivery was rapid and my overall satisfaction with both hitches has been excellent. Tried to attach pictures but was unable to get them from my phone to my computer. 822226

The good: Super easy to install. I did not have to drop the exhaust. You will need two people to get it in place. Wheel ramps or a lift is a must for my 2014 Mazda 3. I did it with ramps. The bad: A few chips from shipping. Overall, in near perfect condition. My weld nuts were extremely non-cooperative. Take the time to clean them and work the bolt in and out. It will make mounting much easier. 820200

I ordered this product because I was moving cross country and wanted to trail a 4x8 cargo trailer behind my Mazda3 hatchback. I purchased this trailer hitch receiver with the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and the whole package took my boyfriend and I a couple hours to assemble. The move cross country took us from Colorado, east and up into Canada, and back south into New England - over 2500 miles. This was in March 2019. We had no issues and I still have the trailer hitch and wiring in my car. I use it occasionally for our trailer hitch bike rack, and will be ready to tow again if needed in the future! 767436

Received my hitch from etrailer in just a few days time, pulled it out of the box, saw a few spots where the paint was chipped most likely during shipment. Touched up the paint, let it dry, had it installed on my wife's 2018 Mazda 3 hatchback by myself in about an hour. I backed it up onto some ramps, chocked the front tires, everything lined up perfectly. Can’t wait to load up the bicycles and head out! The only thing that could have made it easier is if Angela from etrailer would have showed up to lend a hand. 767336

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback
The hitch I recommend for your 2018 Mazda 3 for carrying a bike rack is the Draw Tite part # 24914 because unlike the Curt hitch that fits your vehicle part # C11377 it does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a bike rack like you mentioned wanting to do. For a bike rack the Thule DoubleTrack part # TH9054 is what I recommend. This is a platform rack which means it much easier to load and unload as well as holding the bikes a bit more securely. In the comparison video that you referenced we say that the center of the pin hole of the Draw-Tite # 24914 sits 4" further back than the Curt. If the measurements are the same for your 2018 Mazda 3 then that would mean the center of the pin hole for the Draw-Tite would be 7" from the rearmost edge of your bumper. If by "NV Core" bike rack...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For Mazda 3 Hatchback
We do have trailer hitch receivers compatible with the Mazda 3 hatchback. For 2014-2017, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24914. For 2010-2013, I recommend # 24843. For 2004-2009, I recommend # 24816. If you want wiring or ball mount recommendations, let me know the year of your vehicle for a confirmed fit.

  • Draw Tite or Curt Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback
For your 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback I would recommend the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24914 because it has a shorter install time listed and because unlike the Curt you would not need to use a stabilizer strap with it if you planned on carrying a bike rack. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118405 as it is a confirmed fit. For a ball mount you would want the part # 3593. Then for a 2 inch ball part # 19258 or 1-7/8inch ball # 19256.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch # 24914 Fit 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback w/ Appearance Package
The Draw Tite hitch part # 24914 that you referenced is a fit for your 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback with the appearance package. That being said you can replace the shank of your T2 to allow it to be used in a 1-1/4 inch hitch but it depends on which version of the T2 you have. What you need is the replacement shank part # 753-3709 if you have the T2 Classic. This will replace the shank you have and allow the bike rack to fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

  • Will I Need to Alter the Rear Bumper When Installing Draw-Tite Hitch on a 2015 Mazda 3
According to the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, # 24914, you will not have to alter the bumper on your 2015 Mazda 3. The hitch will bolt to already existing holes in your car's frame. No welding or drilling will be required. The instructions do say that you will have to temporarily lower the exhaust during installation. The installation instruction are linked toward the bottom of this page for you to review.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback
First, for your 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback, you will need a trailer hitch. I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24914 because it does not have any special requirements like the Curt option does. For a bike rack the Kuat Transfer # TS02G, is a popular option. It holds the bikes at the wheels so it is compatible with many bike styles. The U-shaped rack frame makes loading and unloading the bikes easier. I have included a link to a video review of this rack for you. If you prefer the hanging...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 3 Hatchback
The only hitches available for your 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback are Class I hitches that have a 1-1/4 inch opening. Hitches with a 2 inch opening are generally reserved for larger capacity vehicles like trucks and SUVs. For a hitch for your vehicle I would recommend the # 24914. There are bike racks that will fit 1-1/4 inch hitches though. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback with LED Taillights
The trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite part # 24914. This is a Class-l hitch and has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Unfortunately, none of the hitches we currently offer will be concealed as you will be able to see the cross tube and receiver opening. Since you don't want to see a hitch when not in use, another option I recommend is the Thule Archway XT # TH9009XT trunk mount bike rack. It's a 2-bike trunk rack with a maximum weight capacity of 70 pounds. It also has a integrated...

  • Platform Bike Rack Solution for Carrying 2 Bikes with 2016 Mazda 3
The Yakima Holdup you have is not going to fit as it is designed for Class II hitches only that are 1-1/4 inch in size and the # 24914 is a Class I hitch. The weld-stop in the Draw Tite hitch will not allow the rack to slide in all the way. Your most ideal solution will be to use this hitch with a Class I compatible hitch like the Thule T2 part # TH9045. Other information you might find interesting is that Curt Class I hitches like the part # C11377 do not have the weld stop in the hitch...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback GT Sport
I suggest the Draw-Tite Sportframe # 24914 for your 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback. The Curt # C11377 that is available to fit requires the use of a support strap when carrying non-trailer accessories on the hitch. The Draw-Tite doesn't have this requirement. For a ball mount you can use the # 3593 which includes a pin and clip. A 2 inch hitch ball to fit is # 19258 and a 1-7/8 ball is # 19256. You'll also likely need trailer wiring to power your trailer's lights. The wiring harness #...

  • Recommended Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for Townie Bike on 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback
Based on what you are asking this question from, it looks like you are looking for a platform style rack. If you don't already have a trailer hitch receiver, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24914 which is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback. Your vehicle only can use a Class I hitch receiver, so we will need to look at compatible bike racks. If you have front fenders on your Townie bike, I recommend the Swagman...

  • Hitch Receiver Options for a 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback
There are a pair of hitches which are a confirmed fit for your 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback, but unfortunately none of them are 2" hitches. The hitches which fit your vehicle are the Draw-Tite # 24914 and Curt # C11377, each of which are Class I, 1-1/4" hitches. Of the two, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 24914 because it will not require the use of stabilization straps when using accessories such as a bike rack.

  • Recommended Hitch And Platform-Style Bike Carrier For 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback
Many times car manufacturers recommend no towing due to the stress on the transmission and engine, but carrying a hitch mounted accessory is acceptable. You will want to check with your owner's manual or with you dealership to find the hitch tongue weight capacity for your 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback. Many times hitches have a tongue weight capacity higher than the vehicle tongue weight capacity so you want to make sure you do not exceed the lower rated component. The hitch I recommend...

  • How To Take A Measurement To See If Hitch Mounted Bike Racks Will Fit 2014 Mazda 3
We have not had a chance to install the # 24914 trailer hitch on a Mazda 3, but there is a way to determine if you have enough room for the bike carriers. If you look at the attached directions and then look under your Mazda you can measure from the holes on your vehicle frame that are used for the installation rearward to note where the hitch pin hole will be. The Swagman G10, part # S64682, measures 6-inches from the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier when it is folded...

For your 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback with LED taillights and rear diffuser, the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24914 is a confirmed fit. If you will be using this hitch for light towing, I recommend the Sportframe Drawbar 2-1/8" Rise or 2-3/4" Drop 2000 kit # 3593. You will also need a hitch ball like # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch hitch ball. For trailer wiring, I recommend the Upgraded Circuit Protected ModuLite with...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback
Yes, the Draw Tite hitch part # 24914 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback and would be a great choice for carrying a bike rack as it does not require a stabilizer strap like the Curt hitch does. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks and this one showed up in nearly everyone's top three. Check out the review...
