Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagon we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite SportFrame trailer hitch receiver. This is a custom fit class one trailer hitch with an 1-1/4" opening. Its part number is 24866. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once we get it installed on the vehicle. As you can see, you see it all the way across here. It's going to tuck up over our muffler on this side so we won't have to worry about moving that.

Then we've got the longer bar for our middle support. That runs up just underneath our wheel well area here at the back. It's a class one hitch so we're going to have options as far as bike racks go. Typically limited to two, or also light duty hauling. Now the hitch is going to offer us a 200 pound tongue weight rating, that's the maximum amount of downward force we can apply to the tongue, and a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, which is going to be the total of the trailer and everything we've got loaded. We'll want to look into the owners manual just to make sure our Jetta can handle these loads.

If not, we'll go off of whichever is the lowest. Our hitch is going to have a 1/2" pinhole diameter, so all the 1/2" pinhole accessories will work out fine. We've got an 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening here at the rear and plenty of room for our safety chains to connect in whether we're doing a trailer or maybe we need the extra support with a strap. Now a few measurements that will be helpful in selecting our ball mount or maybe bike rack. These will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening. We have about 9-3/4".

From the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 3-3/4. We'll begin our installation here under the passenger side. What we're going to do is remove the three Torx bolts around the perimeter, and then the two plastic hex nuts that we have here in the middle. Now we'll grab a pair of pliers, or you could use a socket if you want to and just back these off. Then we'll just pull that down.

In this case we'll return it to our customer. Now it's time to lower the exhaust down a little bit. We've got a rubber hanger located here just in front of the rear axle that we'll be removing. Then there's also two bolts in the hanger back here that we're going to be taking out. Now just for good measure it's always a good idea to give your exhaust a little support from the underside here. We're just going to use a cam buckle strap. That way when we release those it can come down and rest right on there for us. For the hanger here just in front of that rear axle we're going to use a little bit of penetrating oil or a little lubricant, just help it slide off. Then we can head back here and take out the two bolts. We'll just allow that to come down and rest on our strap. Now I'm going to move this exhaust isolator down and you'll see the two small tabs here, one on each side. We need to bend those up. Now we'll also remove the three bolts that are holding our vapor canister up into place. Then we've got our last one tucked up right under the rear bumper cover here. Then we can just let that come down a little bit just like that. Now let's take our fish wire, let's bring it in through the hole that's right here in the side of the frame and push it back towards the rear. We're going to be using that access hole right there. We'll feed that in far enough you can see our wire poking out right here. We'll grab that with some pliers and guide it out just like that. We're going to grab our spacer block and feed that on, and then thread on our carriage bolt. We'll guide those up into our frame rail separately. Now with that waiting, we'll take our handle nut now. We want this to be right over our center hole location right here. We'll get a rough idea of about how long that straight section will need to be. Then we'll grab it back here and give it a bend, feed it back in. Then we'll want that, as you can see there, just to be resting right over top of that hole so we can thread our bolt in. Now we're going to take the spacer block and we need to position that so it's sitting just underneath the hitch there. Use a piece of tape just to hold that in place. Then we can just poke out the middle of it there. That will leave us ready to bring our hitch right up into place. Now as we raise the hitch into position we want to start our fish wire right here through our spacer and also our hitch. Just guide it over. We'll start our hex bolt with a conical tooth washer here on this side. You want those teeth to be facing up. We want to get that started right into that handle nut that we had up there. Here on the driver side we're going to rotate our exhaust bracket back up into place. Then we'll go right through that, through the hitch, into the holes that our exhaust hanger was in before. Once we've got one of these started well and our one started on the other side, we can allow the hitch to hang while we get the rest of our fasteners taken care of. Now we can pull off our fish wire. We want to be careful not to let the bolt drop back into the frame. Onto that we're going to add one of the conical tooth washers and then thread on our hex nut. With all of our exterior fasteners in place, let's head into the trunk. Let's remove our . any coverings or anything you might have on the floor. We need to gain access in here to our spare tire area. Now we can see the plug right here that we that we want to remove. Then you'll see our hitch lined up just below it there. Here on the top side we're going to bring in the large spacer block, allow that to go right down in through our hitch. What we'll do is just seal up any of the openings that we have here. We'll take a little bit right around the main portion. We're trying to seal any exhaust gasses or any water from getting inside of the vehicle here. What that down, that will seal the bottom, and a little bit on each side there will take care of the side portion. Perfect. That's all we really need to do here in the trunk so let's get our spare tire and everything else put back into place. Now let's go around to the underside and we'll put a conical tooth washer on here and the hex nut that's provided. Now we use the 1/2" carriage bolt for this area and the 7/16 goes on that passenger side. You'll see the difference between the two. Let's just snug everything up temporarily for now. Now we'll go through and torque everything down to the specifications listed on the instructions. Now we can get our vapor canister put back up into place here. We're also going to put the one Torx bolt back in here on the very rear side. This will actually hold our fascia up into place. The two on the side, that was just for that panel, but the one back here we want to put back in. Now let's get that rubber isolator put back on our exhaust and we'll be ready to hit the road. We'll hit this with a little bit of spray lubricant just like before, help us a little bit get it on there. There we go. Now we're good to pull down our strap and our hitch is in. That will complete today's installation of the Hidden Hitch custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 60283, on our 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagon. That's going to complete today's installation of the Draw-Tite class one SportsFrame trailer hitch receiver, part number 24866, on our 2013 Volkswagon jetta SportWagon.

This hitch was installed easily and looks great on my JSW TDI! Ground clearance is perfect and it holds my bike rack very well. It arrived quicker than expected, too! I’m very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it! 672951

Happy with the end result, but install was a bit more difficult than the video makes it out to be (the bolt/spacer that needs to be fed thru the frame). 97722

Trailer hitch receiver is well built however I wish it would give a bit more clearance, seams like there is planty enough room between the bumper and receiver to mount it higher we will see how it will work in the winter 410223

Once mounted, this seems to be a very solid unit. It is well built out of heavy stock. The time estimate of 1 hour for install was quite a bit less than what it took for me to get the hitch mounted up. Watching the install video helped although it is for a slightly different model and the instruction sheet was not all that clear on the first few readings (it made sense once I was done). My hitch took close to 3 hours for the complete installation. The two bolt holes on exhaust hanger bracket needed to be enlarged in order to align with existing mount on the car and longer bolts were needed to initially draw that side up to a point where the bolts included with the hitch would thread into existing holes. 39225

Fit perfectly on my 2006 TDI. Install was a little fiddly on my own, but with a set of ramps and a bottle jack to hold the hitch up, it was installed in about an hour. Each mounting holes uses a different sized bolt and corresponding hardware. Spend a moment or two to make sure you have the right bolt in the right place. The instructions are a little vague, but the video on the product site is excellent. I installed the matching wire harness at the same time. Start to finish install time for the hitch and wiring harness was about 3 hours. I plan to use this to haul a small pop-up camper. 600470

Delivery was outstanding. Product installed as intended, but can be tricky the first time. Product fits well and secure. The only issue is that the product's protective coating is weak and corrison starts within a few weeks. Overall good product for the price.. 594730

You get what you pay for. Nothing like dealing with metric and SAE hardware for an install. Also, they sent me a bolt that was way too short for the passenger side of the frame. I had to run to get my own so I could finish the job. Not a terrible install, once you get past the fish wire and mixed hardware. I did it myself with ramps without too much of a problem. Pre-drilled holes did not align easily....definitely get the exhaust bolts threaded first because there is no room to maneuver anything. It works for what I wanted it to do, which is carry a platform so I can transport deer without getting my interior messy. For the money, I think it has been worth it. But it won't last. Its pretty soft steel with a weak paint job...mine is already rusting. 609534

This is the second hitch I've bought from eTrailer, one for my wife's CRV and this one for my Jetta Sportwagon. No surprises, just a quality hitch delivered promptly by eTrailer. Installation process went just like the video explained. Thanks for the great service. 77750

The hitch has been working very well - it still looks like new and has performed flawlessly. I use it to pull the folding trailer that I purchased from eTrailer. My only wish is that the receiver receptacle was sized more closely to the size of the ball mount shaft. Presently, the shaft fits somewhat loosely and klunks frequently heard inside the car when the trailer is being pulled, especially when its empty. The loose fit is obvious when installing the ball mount shaft into the receiver. If you have any ideas about how to shim the loose fit, Id like to know.

There are a lot of anti-rattle devices on the market to remedy such a problem. There has to be a certain amount of slack in order to get the device in and out. It's not dangerous by any means, but it can be noisy and irritating. I've added a link to the anti-rattle devices we have. Make sure to look at the ones sized for your hitch.

Here's a picture of my new trailer hitch from etrailer.com on my VW Jetta, it was awful to install , but after 3 1/2 hours my cousin and I figured out what the instructions were attempting to mean 27516

- 24866

Finish Quality: The finish of the part that shows was very good. The parts that you only see if you install this hitch yourself were not so good. There were chips on some of the corners where bare metal was showing. I was disappointed, but didn't want to hassle with sending it back, so I ended up repainting most of the hitch. Design Quality: I had a lot of trouble getting the 2 bolts on the muffler side started. I had started the bolts on the other side because fishing the bolts through seemed the harder task. Even with that side loosely bolted, it took a while to get enough alignment to start the bolts on the other side. I wonder if the dimensions were off just enough. Also it looks a tad crooked compared to the bottom of the bumper. Not awful, but enough that you notice if you look closely. Direction Quality: With the exception of suggesting starting the muffler side bolts first, the instructions were fine. 24248

This purchase was great on 2 of 3 aspects: 1. e-trailer service was very good. Again. 2. The hitch itself seems fine. It's beefy and mine was well painted. The design seems solid and inspires confidence and earned 5 stars. 3. Installation - not so much, resulting in at least a 1 star debit. Most of the blame goes to the instructions, as others have noted. Don't even attempt this without reading carefully and watching the video a couple times - either by itself is insufficient. Despite that, I had more trouble than with the difficulty 9 (of 10) hitch on my Golf. The issues: a. It's difficult to tell the hardware apart and there are quite a few pieces of similar size. Ditto with the spacers - there's no clear statement about which goes where and it's easy to use the wrong washer, etc., requiring back tracking. b. The written instructions say you must lower an exhaust isolator in front of the rear axle but doesn't indicate how (it's not obvious) ... the video doesn't even mention it. c. The pull wire must be fished empty, the bolt and spacer added, and then the wire is pulled back. The written instructions don't even hint at that (although the video shows it) and it's not hard to waste 45 minutes that way. Don't ask how I know. d. Both sets of instructions say to remove the spare tire well plug, but that leaves a much larger hole than necessary. You can cut just the center of the plug away ... and leave less room for leakage, etc. A smaller opening will be better sealed, e. The instructions say not to re-install the plastic fascia on the passenger side. Well, why not? Does Draw-Tite really think VW wasted money with that part .... or do they think a lower difficulty score is more important than maintaining the integrity of your car's design? Clearly, the panel improves aerodynamics under the car (fuel economy at speed) and keeps that area cleaner in bad weather with salty roads. Yes, you can cut the panel and put it back on, but that will take you a lot longer because Draw-Tite provided no measurements and they're difficult to take yourself. You'll need many sessions with your cutting tool (successive approximation) if you want to do a reasonable job. 565592

The ease of installation was by far the big selling point for the purchase. The issue I had with this particular hitch was that the receiver angles downward and when the tow bar was installed there was insufficient clearance when going in and out of drive ways causing the tow bar to drag with my Teardrop trailer attached (empty). On a positive note staff at etrailer.com were quick to to follow up. Another hitch was sent yet construction of the hitch was the same. They accepted the hitch back on a full refund and I ended up purchasing the ECO-hitch, much more time needed to install, yet provided the ground clearance. Completely satisfied with the service provided by etrailer.com. 725555

It took a few months of procrastinating but I finally installed the hitch. I have yet to tow anything with it or to mount my bicycle carrier so I can't attest to its strength. But it installed with not too much difficulty. I had to review the installation many times to understand the mounting on the passenger side. Definitely couldn't have done it without the video. 803197

Hitch has been great. ONLY slight negative was that the install was slightly more difficult than it needed to be just because the bolt that went thru the frame to the inserted captive nut was a little shorter than optimal for getting it to start threading. other than that slight issue all was perfect and as described. Very good custom setup for the car. Didn't have to drill any holse. 796708

I was surprised that the hitch arrived so quickly. It looks great and the finish is very good. I will get it on this next week (we had snow today). I am looking forward to using the hitch for many jobs with my light utility trailer. 771614

Overall a great product. I was able to install it without a lift or ramp, working off the garage floor. Watch the videos more than once to study the install. Test fit everything and then get to it. There are minor differences in the exhaust hanger and vapor canister location (not installed) on the TDI, but the differences are inconsequential. I used tin snips to cut a channel for the plastic underbody cover and reinstalled it after the hitch install was complete. Very responsive customer support. 764147

Nice fit and look - fairly easy to install but one bolt was quite difficult to get lined up. Note that on a VW sportwagon (which is already pretty low to the ground) this hitch is easy to ground out on moderate dips in the road. No damage to the assembly though - it is pretty well built. Wiring is difficult because VW won't give out any info on their electrical harness nor any fuse panel diagrams. Suggest having a trailer shop do the wiring. 738979

Great Product, install was kinda challenging, but got it done. After installing this hitch, we noticed it has really low clearance. It drags on the ground when driving through mild dips or speed bumps, or when we have passengers in the car. It would be awesome if the etrailer design was lifted just a few inches or so. 737189

The 2004 VW Jetta will use the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24748 which is not compatible with a 2006 Jetta. It was designed for the previous generation. You instead will need the hitch # 24866 which is specifically designed to fit 2006-2014 Jetta models. I've attached a couple of videos to assist.

  • How to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen
All of the trailer hitches available for the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen are Class I rated trailer hitches. You are correct in your assessment that a Class I hitch can only carry a maximum of 2 bikes. The issue that you run into with a third or fourth bike is not just the weight of the bikes, but the distance that weight is placed from the trailer hitch. They put additional leverage on the hitch that it cannot support. It is similar to using a pipe extension on a wrench to break a...

  • Compatibility of Draw-Tite Class I Hitch Receiver with Bike Carrier for Carbon Fiber Frame Bike
The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24866 is 3-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper which is the most important measurement to ensure a bike rack fits to give you adequate clearance so your rack and vehicle don't make contact. This hitch is a confirmed fit for your 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI. The weldstop you pointed out is 1-5/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole so it will not...

  • Hitch to Ground Clearance of DrawTite Hitch # 24866 When Installed on 2012 Volkswagen Jetta
When installed on your 2012 Volkswagen Jetta the top of the receiver tube of the DrawTite Hitch # 24866 will sit just below the bottom of the bumper fascia. The exact height above the ground will be a function of several factors, including the tread depth on your tires and the passenger and cargo load in the vehicle at any given time. I have included a link to an installation video for this hitch on your specific vehicle. I researched all available hitch receivers for your vehicle to...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
There are only Class I trailer hitches available for the 2006 VW Jetta, see link. Out of the available trailer hitches I recommend Draw-Tite hitch # 24866 because if you use an accessory in the hitch like a bike rack you do NOT have to use a stabilization strap like you would with the Curt hitch. The recommended ball mount is # 3593. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256. For a 2 inch ball use # 19258. This hitch has a 200 pound tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pound gross trailer weight...

  • Trailer Part Difference Between 2010 VW Jetta Sedan and Sportwagen Models
Yes. There is a difference in the fit for a 2010 Jetta Sedan compared to the Jetta Sportwagen. For a 2010 Jetta Sedan, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class I # 24866 for a trailer hitch, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118667 (which connects behind tail lights), and ball mount # 3593. Then you can use hitch ball # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch diameter ball or # 19258 for a 2 inch ball. For a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen, the...

  • Which Hitch Will Fit A 2010 VW Jetta TDI And Are There Modifications Needed
For the 2010 VW Jetta TDI you would use the Draw-Tite hitch, # 24866. There is no trimming to be done on the VW Jetta TDI. The wiring you will need is the CURT Wiring Harness, part # 56201. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the hitch # 24866 and a link to instructions on the CURT wiring harness.

  • Class I Hitch Cargo Carrier with Good Ground Clearance on 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
Please take a look at Curt Class I carrier # C18110. This carrier has 3-3/4-inches of rise in the shank and it provides 6-3/4-inches of clearance from your hitch pin hole. This will fit your hitch without an adapter. The cost for this carrier is about the same as what you would have to spend on multiple adapters and it is a far safer solution that will not cost you a loss of hitch capacity. Having something fabricated would definitely cost you more and I do not recommend this because that...

  • Trailer Hitch Compatibility with 2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
The turbo-diesel feature on your 2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedan does not affect hitch fits so all of the Class I hitch options shown on the linked page are compatible with your car. If your intended use is a hitch-mount bike rack then I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24866. The other hitches either include a ball mount or require a stabilizing strap. Note that any accessory item you choose to install in the hitch, whether a bike rack or cargo carrier, needs to be Class I-rated to ensure...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2014 VW Jetta SEL
For your 2014 VW Jetta SEL, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24866 over the Curt # C11474. The Hidden Hitch brand is going away and the Curt hitch receiver requires the use of a stabilization strap # 18050 for any non-trailer load like a bike rack. Each of the options has the same basic measurements for ground clearance and bumper clearance. I've attached a video that shows each of them has a 6 inch from center of hitch...

  • Trailer Hitch, Cargo Carrier And Bike Rack For 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sedan
There is a hitch available for the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sedan, it is Draw-Tite Class I hitch part # 24866. I have attached an installation video for your reference. It can tow up to 200 lbs of tongue weight. I was not able to access your owner's manual but it is a good idea to check the owner's manual for the tongue weight rating Volkswagen recommends for the Jetta and do not exceed that. If you need a cargo carrier, I recommend the Curt cargo carrier part # C18145 because it is...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit and Towing Capacity for a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
From the research I did it looks like your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen has a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. You would need to consult the owners manual of your vehicle to verify this as well. For a hitch you would then want the Draw Tite part # 24866 which is a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 119179KIT. For a ball mount part # 3593, for a 2 inch hitch ball part # 19258 or for a 1-7/8 inch ball...

I contacted our representative at Draw-Tite about the ground clearance of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 24866, on a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. The representative at Draw-Tite informed me that the hitch sits almost flush with the spare tire carrier or area. Also what you can do to gauge an idea of where the receiver will be is to measure from the bumper fascia down 2-1/4 inches. The hitch has a 1-1/4 inch receiver and sits about an inch away from bumper fascia. I have...

  • Towing Components and Towing Capacity for 2013 Volkswagon Jetta SE 2.5L
The one true authority on any vehicle's capabilities is the auto maker itself. Your printed owner's manual is the best source for accurate information about towing capacity, since online information may be generalized. Online data I found indicates the car has a 2000-lb towing capacity. Since your manual relates to your specific vehicle it is the place to find if the car is indeed rated for any towing capacity. You could also ask your local dealership to look up the car's VIN, since...
