Strong, Durable Construction
The SquareBars are made of heavy-duty, rust-resistant galvanized steel. They have a black polymer coating that provides extra grip to help prevent your cargo from sliding around while you're driving. The polymer coating also helps protect the bars against corrosion so you can leave the SquareBars on your roof year-round.
The bars have plastic endcaps that help keep out water and road debris, and they give your roof rack a finished look.
Hassle-Free Installation
Installation of the SquareBars is quick and easy, and you don't have to do any drilling or vehicle modification. The bars have bottom channels that that accommodate your Thule feet. Etched scales adjacent to the bottom channels let you place the feet in the proper location using the vehicle-specific measurements provided in your fit kit manual. Simply slide each foot to the measurement indicated in the fit kit manual, and place the rack on your vehicle.
For applications that don't require specific measurements provided in a fit kit manual - such as a raised rail - you can center the rack after you place it on your vehicle using a tape measure.
To complete installation on your roof simply tighten a single screw inside each foot using the torque tool included with the foot pack. This single attachment point enables you to secure the crossbar to the foot and the foot to your roof simultaneously.

I’ve had my Thule roof rack for a year. It’s sturdy and easily handles two kayaks. Love it!
53” Thule bars fit our 2021 RAV4 Hybrid! Most people appear to be using 47” bars for the 2021 RAV4 with flush roof rails, but that’s smaller than I wanted. I sometimes carry a sheet of plywood, or a kayak plus a cargo box, and wanted a wider rack for that. I had heard that upsizing to the 53” bar was potentially not possible because the mounting slots on the bottom of the bar may not accommodate the rail locations relative to the bar length. etrailer helped me out with some dimensions, so I bought the 53” bar knowing it would be close. There is only about a quarter inch of play on either side on the rear bar, but it fit (the front bar had more play, since the towers are a bit further apart at the front).
I’m SO happy with the result! Now I can carry what I want on the rack, and have room to spare! It looks pretty good too!
Items arrived later than expected despite cancelling an month long order due to waiting stock on a different set up that was in stock. Once it arrived the box was all torn up and the person that delivered it just dropped it in the garage with the boxes spilling out of the bigger box. Love Thule products, etailer and the shipping supplier not so much,
I am a return customer: Very disappointed in the representative that sold me Thule crossbars/Feet//Kit ($701). He reassured me the crossbars, (after asking several times) based on a picture he was looking at, DID come with locking devices as this was the selling point for me. WELL, THEY DID NOT!!!! I called etrailer and asked for that specific rep, to advise him, and he was not available. I explained the situation to Mary, who was very nice, and after consulting with another rep, I was told I would have to pay for the locks, but they would give me free shipping. Really? This is disappointing as I am a return customer and was reassured there were locking devices. [I called to make sure I was purchasing the right bars and equipment/locks, as I didn't want to get it wrong spending that kind of money] DISAPPOINTING Two stars b/c shipping was timely.

Bad choice on my part. I should have ordered the Crossroad Feet for raised railing. These work, just mount rather high. I would like to exchange them.
Katrina B - 05/05/2022y’all are excellent at many things like the email below for example. The follow up after the order was also excellent. The products that you carry are excellent too - I have been a long time fan of the Thule products - I’ve used them on most of my vehicles over the years.
The only issue I had with this order was I had specifically talked to a customer service rep to see if a fit kit was needed in addition to the TH460R in order to attach my Thule bars to my suv. The answer was no - only the podium feet were required and that was all.
It was just frustrating to find that I need a kit (which I ordered from etrailer yesterday) when the podium arrived at my home.
Order and follow up with etrailer was excellent. The Thule rook rails for my 2922 Hyundai Palisade was delivered promptly as expected. The Thule boxes inside shipping box were in great shape as was the Crossbars, podium feet, and fit kit themselves. The larger shipping box was in good shape although a few staples on the top were dislodged. Put together the rails and placed on vehicle and looks great. The actual Thule directions and weak, but used etrailer and you tube videos to enhance and seemed good. Waiting for locks to arrive and will then drive with the rails on to see how sound is.

When I called in a very friendly agent helped me and sent me the replacement caps free of charge and kept in contact with me until I received them. I will definitely buy from here again.

I really love my roof rack I got from this site. At first, I was having a heard time trying to figure out the right fit for my 2017 Acura MDX. I did a research only and watched videos on youtube. I even purchased the same thule roof rack from [online vendor] but it wasn't the right fit. When I made my way to this site, they not just have the right recommendation, but they also have the right parts for my vehicle. If I ever needed anything for my vehicle and they have it on this site, I will have no trouble getting it from here. I am a happy customer and I just wanted to say thank you!
The instructions Thule provides are not very helpful. But that's not etrailer's fault, and the provided videos did help a lot
A bit pricy but it's a really good system. Went on easy and hauled my bike and kayak well. My only gripe is that for this price it should come with locks.

Thule is the only premier cargo accessory manufacture in the industry. The design, manufacturing and quality of their products is world class. We currently own two German SUVs that are used regularly for a wide array of outdoor sports and refuse to outfit our vehicles with any other brand of equipment. This particular system was very easy to install when following manufacturers installation instructions and recommendations.
Bought the Thule AeroBlade and all the fittings recommended by etrailer earlier this summer. Everything fits perfect, was easy to install, and looks really great on the car.

I really appreciate the prompt shipment. I was able to get the roof rack on the car in about an hour. Are used it about two hours later to carry a ladder. It was very sturdy. Instructions were not great. But it was not a complex install either.
These Thule podium feet fit my Honda CRV perfectly. Allowing me to set up the Thule Evo crossbars and luggage carrier. etrailer’s customer service was great when there was a slight shipping issue.
Used these feet to mount a previous vehicle's Thule Aero bar with 450R feet to a RAV4 requiring the 460R feet. Installation was easy and all parts fit perfectly. Could even use my old lock cores as well. etrailer made it easy to purchase the 2 items I needed (this plus a fit kit) from one place since they had both in stock. Allowed me to meet my month-end deadline for getting crossbars installed.
Just installed on 2020 Telluride. They look great. The 3 minute video from etrailer was perfect....though it took me about an hour.
I have not actually used the product yet, but I'm happy with the quality of the construction. My only complaint is that the instructions were very bad, which caused the assembly to take a lot longer than it should have. (And I am very experienced in assembling things.) But you should know that your choice of UPS is not a good one and has already resulted in my son-on-law and probably two others to purchase from REI instead of etrailer. UPS delivery was first scheduled for May 14. Then I got a message saying an "incident" occurred which may result in delay. I could never get an explanation of the "incident." However, I repeatedly got this same message for each of the next 5 days, while the tracking system continued to show the expected delivery as May 14. Finally, on May 19 I got a phone call to confirm delivery for the next day. The window was noon to 6 PM. It did not come. They called again to schedule delivery for the next day (Friday) with the same 6 hour delivery window. It did not come, but I got a message saying it would be delivered the next business day, which would have been Monday. It did not come, nor did they call. So I called them and scheduled a delivery for the next day between noon and 6 PM. So this became the 4th day that I had to rearrange my personal schedule to accommodate a 6 hour window. It finally was delivered at 6:40 PM. You may want to consider using a different delivery service.

The Thule SquareBar Evo Crossbars, Rapid Traverse Feet, and Fit Kit for the Roof Rack Feet were all promptly shipped and delivered within three days of the order. I had them all assembled and installed on my Ford Focus in less than an hour.
Easy to install and it looks great. Wish it had holes in the ends for hooking bungee cords on. But other than that its perfect.
Wish I ordered these months ago. I went with a different style first and it was a mistake. I car top a 100# fishing kayak. Having the extended Thule bars always for easier on and off. There’s a few steps in the instructions I might tweak but wasn’t hard to figure out and install.

Great roof rack. Everything shipped and arrived as expected. The kit had everything I needed to install on my 2017 Highlander with factory side rails. Followed the directions provided and watched the video. Install took about an hour by myself. I have purchased a number of products from etrailer and have never had any complaints or issues.

Good products, but the cap to the podium feet doesn't feel secure. I had to put zip tie it together.

The installation took me less than an hour overall. etrailer provides detailed instructions in their video which makes the installation very easy.

eTrailer provided great shipment/notification support. Little more than trivial to install Thule AeroBlade along with this fit kit onto 2021 Mazda CX-9, but eTrailer was great resource for how-to videos that were key to successful install.

We just purchased a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe as our retirement vehicle for traveling. We wanted to install cargo accessories but the dealer prices were WAY to high. After researching for several days we found etrailer.com. The prices were the best we found and the service was outstanding! We installed a Thule roof rack system that fits flawlessly and allows the panorama sun roof to plenty of roof to operate. The videos made in really easy to install. We also installed a trailer hitch system. The Tekonsha Trailer Wiring kit was also a piece of cake to install. If you're hesitant to work on electrical systems, there's no need to be afraid. It's actually easier than it looks in the video.
The Curt Trailer Hitch gave me major headaches. The delivery company banged the box up pretty badly. Apparently it tweaked the hitch just enough so that the holes were misaligned. No problem, after talking me through the installation one more time to be sure it was damaged, they shipped a new unit. The second hitch went in fine. It took a while, and it's not as easy as it looks in the video, but I'm 67 years old I did the installation myself...
Overall, I gave five stars because the price match guaranty makes it a wise choice price wise. he videos are a big help during installation. But the real difference is the service. A lot of folks provide good service to make a sale, but etrailer goes the extra distance to provide great service afterwards. That's unique! Thanks etrailer!
Great assistance with selecting the correct components for the job. Delivery was prompt and tracked. Excellent product arrived and installed correctly. My only reservation is on the overly simplistic Thule instruction set.

I am very happy with this system. It fit the Acura roof rails perfectly and was easy to install. The bases make a very solid support for the aero bar rails. The rack system with these feet has minimal wind noise. My only concern is that the screws to mount the plates to the vehicle are exposed and could allow the rack to be stolen. However, it would require a hollow torx bit to remove them so the likelihood of someone having this tool is very small.

the thule roof rack system is basically well thought out, and seems to be well constructed. time will tell. i am surprised though at the wide gaps in some of the fits between pieces. the star [hex style] screws fit well, and drive easily with a drop of wd-40. make sure to save the drivers and put them where they will not be lost in the event that you wish to adjust, tighten or remove the racks. one oversight is that when installed on my 2017 murano rails, there are gaps on either side of the foot. seems to me that thule would have a solution for that, as these gaps will allow snow, rain, dirt to enter the gaps and build up inside of the murano rails. i used the system last week loaded up with heavy long boards to drive to and from my break in montauk, at speeds up to 65 mph, and nothing vibrated, rattled or made any notable strap noise above and beyond what is to be expected. it will be interesting to see how the thule system holds up for say, 2,3,4,5, years up here in the north east.
Order was processed and shipped quickly. Product was well packaged. Manufacturer instructions were lousy, but thanks to an etrailer video, I was able to easily assemble and install the Thule feet to my vehicle.
Great product. Relatively easy instructions for install. Although not giving 5 stars because I was pretty disappointed with the shipping time (even despite COVID challenges). I purchased from etrailer because the availability date of the parts was sooner than other vendors, only for the shipping date to be delayed in total by more than a month without any update on the delay unless I went in to check my order status. I would think that a delay in shipping date, especially when it happens multiple times, would trigger and email notification to the buyer.
I purchased a full direct mount Thule kit for my 2018 Infiniti Q30s. etrailer.com made it very easy, pairing what I needed at a great price. My kit arrived earlier than estimated and looks great on my car. If there was one negative, it would be the Thule instructions. Written in multiple languages to cover thier market made installation a bit challenging but it all worked out.

These worked great on my 2018 Subaru Outback Premium. The built-in crossbars that came already installed on the Outback were not wide enough to carry my canoe. So, this pack, in combination with the Thule AeroBlades I already had, are the perfect combo.

Products are excellent. The assembling instructions are poor. When 3 separate products are needed to complete a system it would be extremely helpful to explain in a video how the components of the three are assembled and in what order. After we finally assembled and mounted the crossbars, we realized it should only take 30 minutes at most. It was a good 2 hours as the instructions on the component pages are vague at best. I still give the 4 stars as the products are not the issue.
Where the aerobars are great, Thule falls on it's face with the design of the mounting feet. The feet are hard to position in the bars and the faceplates do not securely fit into the feet. So far I've only got two to lock in. The other two pop off with the slightest pull. Also given the price tag on these relatively simple items, I would think that Thule could include a lock-set.
I've had the Thule Podium Roof Rack for about a year and have used it twice. So far it's exactly what I needed. Easy to setup.

I needed a way to haul SUP board's on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Product was exactly what I needed. Make sure you read all the instruction from the multiple boxes before you begin. Easy to install and a great fit!

Podiums and Aero Bars are great no driving noise, installation was fairly easy. The instructions are a little lacking and the video shows more of a re-installation versus installation. Sliding the bar in the podium to get it centered took some work, but if you leave the mount kit screws loose and push down on the screws while pulling the bar it slides fairly easily.

Fairly easy to install and work great. Still securely on my car 1+ year later.
I found the locking mechanisms that came with these were really hard to actually lock. The plastic latches were hard to tell if they were secured. I ended up driving to a surf spot not realizing the back two feet weren't properly locked/secured. The feet fell off and were run over by cars. etrailer's customer service was great and replaced the 2 feet for me. I then ordered a set of actual metal locks (with keys) that worked great and have secured my racks 1 year later and still going.

Too early to tell if this will work out, won't be installed until after the holidays as it is a Christmas present. Though I have confidence in Thule's reputation and generally speaking the product appears to be in good shape. With that said, on etrailer's end one of the three boxes the components came in (the aeroblades themselves) had clearly been previously opened and repackaged pretty poorly. The contents were loose with no packing material around them so there were a couple of small scratches on the aeroblades (very insignificant, nothing more than a quarter inch and no indentation or dents). The thing that most disappoints me is that since it's a gift I would have liked a better looking package over the battered looking box it came in. The other two boxes (for the podium and foot packs) were in good shape so I don't know what happened with the blades.
Received our order and am very happy with the time to get it as well as the products.
I asked if the system would fit my car and a response came back within 24 hrs. So I could order the proper parts!

They are the original cross bars I saw as a kid so that is why I bought them. Just place and do nothing else kind of bars. You can hear the wind a bit with them on.

Initial setup was a bit finicky. Spent a lot of time getting pieces aligned and centered on car. Once that was done very easy to bolt on and off racks as needed. So far they seem OK, but have not used them yet to carry any objects. Will be used mostly to carry kayaks. Etrailer provided very competitive pricing and quick shipping

My original order was severely damaged in transit by UPS. Some of the parts in this order were lost. After calling customer service and speaking with Brenden, he got the necessary parts out to me right away. I was able to complete the installation and everything worked perfectly. I have ordered quite a bit from Etrailer in the past, but this will be my last order. First, I ordered the Thule Gutter system and specifically ask if the old style square bars would fit the gutter system….answer was yes. In fact, it did not. Then had to order the Evo Square bars. They only come in 60”. Most of my orders come in within three days this order took 10 days, it was sent by snail mail. It arrived and the four end caps were not there and one of the bars had a bend in it. Had to reorder. These EVO bars suck. There is a slot you have to massage to get the bar into, very hard to adjust. Super disappointed in the product from Thule and the shipping service from etrailer. Hate to do it, back to [online stores] etc.

The bars are nice but Thule pointedly does not include under bar cover strips with this style of bars. They include these strips with the other three styles of bars they sell. Including these strips would cut the wind noise these bars produce substantially. I overcame this omission by re-using an old 5/8 inch ID (7/8 inch OD) garden hose that I cut up and slid inside the bars from the ends.

Very fast delivery. The box in which the bars were shipped was opened on one end. Two of the end caps were missing. Also, I don't know if there are supposed to be a plastic filler strip for the bottom slots in the bars. If there is, I didn't receive those either. Since the towers have 4 end caps in that box, I was not concerned about the two missing from the bars.

This review is about the cross bars, the towers, clamps and pads made by Thule from the etrailer site. The instructions were straightforward, and the parts were clearly identified and labelled. I went with this Rola Vortex Cargo Rack with extension for its size and multiple tie down points. I Paired it with the Thule 5 inch rapid gutter feet with square bars because:
To remove the freedom panels.
Square bars are stronger than Aero type bars.
Adjustability of fitment as the roof of the Jeep narrows toward the rear.
When loaded for camping, I want to maintain rearward vision.
Finally, the system met my load requirements. I had weighed the gear that will go onto the rack. And I am at OME specs.
I did not want to use the gutter of the freedom panels to carry weight. Since the panels are removable, it seemed to be a potential weak point structurally.
NOTES:
Because this Rola rack comes in sections, I do not recommend it for “Overlanding”.
And because it comes in sections, some weather proofing is needed. I coated the cargo rack guides with an anti seize grease. The bolts of the cargo clamps should be weather proofed as well.
Over time, the screws will need to be replaced. They will rust.
CONCLUSION
Overall I am happy with this set up. Should work well for general camping and hold up to the easier off road trails. If your plans are to Overland for weeks at a time in all weather conditions on moderate to difficult trails having off camber conditions, then this rack may be problematic over time. And may cause damage to the roof top.

I originally purchased this roof rack to haul my 80lb skiff to and from the local lake, and for those purposes, it works great. Easy installation (and removal for the off season). My only issue is trying to make sure the bars protrude evenly from both mounts - less of a concern after in place, but it's a bit fiddly to get it right (measure, adjust, measure, adjust, etc).
As others have said, it can whistle with the squared off rails, but it's only noticeable when the rack is all the way forward and the sun roof is open. Driving on the interstate with the windows up, there's no cabin noise from the rack.

So far so good! The ease of installation was incredible. Pop the fit kit together, put it on the bar and install. Everything is straight forward with the directions. Its even easier if you find a video of the installation. The rack definitely has a little bit of a whistle to it but its kinda expected when you disrupt the airflow. I'm going to pick up my new kayak tomorrow and couldn't be happier! Not the best photo but its all i got at the moment lol.

I already had an "older" Thule roof/bike rack,
purchased for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, then used on a 2010 Hyundai
Elantra Touring (this was the roof rack with the "strapped-on to roof rails"
feet, and the bike carriers with the cantilevered, front fork-secured,
mechanism). My new 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT does NOT have roof rails, thus
the need for this new Thule package consisting of: 1) TH460 - Thule Podium
Roof Mounted Foot Pack for Square Load Bars, 2) THKIT3068 - Thule Fit Kit
for Podium Syle Foot Pack and 3) THLB50 - Thule Square Load Bars - Steel -
50" - Qty 2. MY plan was to "re-use" the pair of "older" Thule bike
carriers.
Etrailer's online info was excellent. The installation videos (although not
for this identical package on the same vehicle as mine - but the 2012 Honda
CRV's roof-mounting system is very close to the Hyundai's) were even MORE
excellent! The box arrived on-time. The components were all there, and
undamaged. The installation instructions were clear and concise... even for
these 67 year-old eyes/mind! My "older" Thule bike carriers fit
PERFECTLY... the new load bars are identical to my old ones (the only reason
I needed new ones was I'd "cut down" the old ones when I moved the rack from
the Grand Cherokee to the Elantra Touring, and now they were ~2" too
short!!!).
We tow the car behind our motorhome and we've found the Thule roof-mounted
products to be excellent for our needs... holding up to three bikes on the
top of our "dinghy".
Dealing with the folks at Etrailer.com was a very pleasant experience!

Sorry for the slow response. We only installed the crossbars this passed weekend. They were very easy to install, as soon as I took the instructions away from my brother. I think they look very nice on the car, but his wife doesn't like them, so we'll be taking them off and putting them on every time we go kayaking. I have my opinions about that situation which I'll keep to myself. I've attached pics of both a front and a back view.

Hyundai Sante Fe models come with both "raised" factory roof rails, and also "flush" factory roof rails. Coupled with the Thule 50" crossbars, this Thule system attaches very soundly to the "flush" roof rails. Expect some added wind noise while traveling at higher speeds. From a mechanical/structural point of view, this system was easier to install than I had anticipated, and very well built. I installed a Yakima "Load Warrior" cargo basket on top of this roof rack. I expect this system to serve us well through many road trips to come.

Got our order for this roof rack system and CRV fit kit in a timely manner and even had the etrailer team contact us both when there was a small delay on our fit kit coming in as well as when everything actually shipped out!
Assembly was super easy and straight forward. The husband worked on prepping the car while I assembled the bars to the towers and then we worked together to affix everything to the car. All in all, it took us maybe 30 minutes to complete installation. Doing it alone might take 45 and is very doable. The pieces to the podium are all taped together and some of them can fall out if you're just pulling tape off and not paying attention. Not a big deal, but make sure you pay attention to where they are so you can put them back in correctly if they do.
My only gripe would be the actual footers on the fit kit. The plastic pieces looked like they were supposed to snap in somewhere but just wiggled around in the mounting gaps until we actually tightened them down. They also seemed to be a bit of an awkward fit on the existing plastic rails, but again, once tightened look fine. I was slightly worried they would crack when tightening just because the plastic isn't very thick, but no problems so far!
We're only one week after installation now, but love the look of them on the car, haven't noticed any extra noise while driving, and are excited for the first kayak trip this weekend to actually use them!

Just finished putting rack on truck. Didn’t need any tools other than the the hex wrenches that came with it because the cap on the truck had the rails on it. Once I figured everything out,it was fairly easy to put on. The directions are not that great. I did it myself,probably could have used an extra set of hands but you can do it yourself. Looks great. The only problem is the the locking covers keep popping off,i just hope they stay on. The guys at etrailer were great. I told them what truck I had and what I wanted to do,and they told me exactly what I needed. The fishing rod holders i put on the rack fit and look great.

You can't beat Thule's fit and finish. I installed this base rack system on my 2011 Mazda 3 five door sport and it took about 25 minuets when it was all said and done (i worked slow). The fit kit mounts the feet nice and flush to the car. Looks great too. There is noticeable wind noise now at highway speeds and normal speeds on a windy day. I may invest in a flaring. That said, anytime you add a rack to your car, there will be noise but it's not that bad. Limited lifetime warrenty, you can't beat that. Etrailer had the best price around and by far the best customer service.

Exactly as shown. They are somewhat different than the other bars I have in that there is a 4 inch slot on the underside of the bar. Unfortunately, this causes a loud wind noise when on the roof of the SUV.

Got a new vehicle (2017 Subaru Impreza) and of course that meant a new roof rack system for the skis and kayaks. (Sadly, the previous system NEVER seems to work on the new car/truck. But hey--what's the fun of having a new car without ACCESSORIZING!)
This baby comes with cool little "integrated fitpoints" in the roof that will accept the screws that will hold the fit kit that will support the footpacks that carry the kayaks that Jack built. (Okay, it was really me, not Jack. You want a nice kayak? Check out Pygmyboats.com.)
Called the dealership where I bought the car and all they could offer was the setup that supported the aero-bar. All my Thule gear is for the square bars, so that wasn't going to work. Poked around on the 'net with very limited success finding the right combo for my specific vehicle. Thought I knew, but didn't want to go through the hassle of ordering, getting, going through the install to find it wasn't right and sending back. Wanted a human to confirm I was getting what I needed.
Called etrailer and that human turned out to be Robert S. -- a rep who knew his products and was very helpful and most pleasant to work with. You know you've got the right place when they give you their direct number to call with any problems. (Unfortunately, the only problem I had was getting the old footers off the bars. Several sessions of soaking with WD-40 and Liquid Wrench, then beating with a rubber hammer and some bad language finally did the trick. Didn't bother Robert with any of that.)
The install went smoothly and when I settled the new footers onto the roof I was pleased to see that they fit the gap and the roofline PERFECTLY. An exceptionally clean and sturdy solution. Thank you etrailer and thank you, Robert S!

I purchased the 460 Podium Roof Mounted Foot Pack, the 4047 Roof Rack Fit Kit and the 50" Square Load Bars all mfg by Thule to mount a kayak bracket for a Ford Edge. I eventually figured out the assembly and installation (after 2 hours) but the printed instructions (very little text in the instructions) were problematic and frustrating. I looked for a video explaining installation but couldn't find one for the products that I purchased.

Great setup. Able to Interchange it between a Mazda 5 and Honda CRV. The employees helped me to figure out which setup would best work for both cars so that I did not end up having to buy additional parts that would not fit each other. We have been able to change the roof rack between the two cars at least 10 times in the last year with no problems with any installation. Now takes only about 20 minutes to do, now that I know the process well. Highly recommend contacting a representative to help you with your order and to find the right product for you.

This kit as well as the TH460 podium roof mounted foot pack and the THLB50 bars all arrived quicker than I expected. I followed etrailer's online tool to identify the correct system for my vehicle (2005 CRV). The fit is perfect and installation went very well. You do need 2 people for a small part of the install but other than that, all was easily achievable by a novice like myself.
