Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking, or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just select a boost setting, set the power output level, and you're good to go.

As long as the Reflex controller is properly mounted according to the included instructions, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This dual-axis, inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Load Range Levels

The Reflex offers 4 different load range (or boost) levels. These settings are designed to give you more or less initial power output based on your trailer's weight. The load range levels let you alter the sensitivity of the brake controller's internal sensor, thus increasing the initial power output to the trailer brakes to better compensate for weighty loads. To set the load range, press and release the button on the front of the controller until your desired level appears on the screen.

So, if you boost the initial power so that the sensor is more sensitive, your trailer brakes will activate with more intensity right off the bat. This means that they will also reach maximum braking faster simply because they will start out at that higher intensity. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

Output Control

Once you set the load range level, you can adjust the overall power output by moving the thumbwheel on the side of the controller. This setting ranges from 0.5 (minimum output) to 9.9 (maximum output). This indicates the maximum amount of power that will be sent back to your trailer brakes when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. Optimum output should cause your trailer brakes to function effectively without locking up.

Safety Features

The Reflex offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. When the Reflex is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode, reducing the power draw to minimize drain on your vehicle's battery. This power-conservation mode begins after 1 hour of inactivity and ends the moment your vehicle's brake pedal is pressed.

When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for a prolonged period of time, the Reflex will reduce the power output to your trailer's brakes, preventing them from overheating.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle, the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this slide engages the brakes on your trailer with full power.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the Reflex ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at a vertical angle that is within 90 degrees, and the controller will level itself automatically. Make sure that the controller is also positioned so that the side-to-side angle is within ±20 degrees.

Curt Reflex Mounting Range

Installation is a snap. After mounting the Reflex unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the brake controller.

Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Curt brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Today we're going to review part number C51130. This is the Curt Reflex Trailer Brake Controller. This is a proportional designed brake controller which will activate your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It will automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle. This does activate immediately so there's no pausing like with some of the time delay brake controllers. It does contain an automatic leveling ability.

It has an internal sensor which will detect any deceleration even if the controller is not mounted flat. When you install this it can be positioned at any angle vertically up or down 360 degrees full rotation pretty much. Horizontally there is a limit-its 20 degrees side to side. So this way 20 degrees and this way 20 degrees or 20 degrees this way, 20 degrees that way. So there is a limit horizontally.

It does have four load range levels. This button right here will get you your load range levels. Our boost settings it'll let you adjust your initial braking power and aggressiveness. It does have a dual access accelerometer which will ensure smooth stops. This brake controller does do a constant diagnostic check which will alert you to any potential problems.

A few integrated safe guards it has to protect the vehicle, the trailer or the controller is one it minimizes the drain on your car battery by entering a power conservation mode after one hour of inactivity. If it isnt used for one hour it will go into the conservation mode. It will help keep your trailer brakes from overheating by reducing the power output to them during prolonged stops and it will prevent brake controller and trailer brake away system against any shorts. It also has a built in polarity protection which will prevent any positive or negative power problems when it is installed wrong. The digital display right here will show you the load range settings and any air codes.

The button I mentioned is for the load range and also for calibration. Right here it has a built in-if I show you when I push it-it has a built in slide bar manual override which is used for emergency braking situations. It does come with the mounting bracket which can be slid on and installed. The top is the holes has mounting screws that can be used or it also has a double faced sticky tape that can be used. Also has a nice little card which will have a-it's a quick reference guide which will show you what some of the display would be indicating. This part is made in the USA and now what I want to do is connect it to a power source to show you what the display read out would look like. What I have here is a Curt Universal Wiring Adapter that's used to mount a Curt Brake Controller in a vehicle that might not have a factory brake controller port. On one end is the port that would snap into the Curt Brake Controller, the other end will be pigtails which I right now have wired to a power source. Basically right now I'm going to show you if we turn on the power as you can see it's flashing CL and what that means is it needs to be calibrated so what you would do is push and hold that button and when you hold the button once it's calibrated it'll come on and be a constant CL instead of it flashing. When you let it go it'll just show you the two dots. The two dots basically mean that the trailer is connected and you're ready to go. If it only showed one dot that would mean the trailer is not connected. Basically what you want to do is-it has four load range settings-our boost settings. Basically you just push this button-you can see load range one, load range two, three and four. Basically the load ranges would be when you put it in one that would be if you're towing a trailer that might weigh less than your tow vehicle weight. If you're trailer is going to be equal to the tow vehicle you would want to go to load range two and if the trailer's vehicle weight is 50% more than the tow vehicle you would want to go to three and then load range four would be if it's 100% greater than the tow vehicle weight. Once you find the load range you want to put it in-let's say one right there then there's a knob here on the side that you can turn it-you can see that it'll range from .5 all the way up to 9.9. That's the amount of brake output it would be. So in Load range one we're going to set it at let's say at 6.1 now it goes off and you're all set at load range one with a 6.1 setting. If you have an emergency braking situation as you push this manual override you can see the brake output increasing and if you go all the way it will do the 6.1 you have it set at. Those would be the settings you would do on your brake controller. The application for this that will work on trailers up to four axles or eight brake assemblies. It is designed to be used with an electric or electrical hydraulic trailer brakes and it does come with a limited lifetime warranty. Wiring up a brake controller can be tricky. Routing the wire from the hitch to the firewall and finding the right wire on the brake are the hardest part, but etrailer will do their best to help. Consider running the wire inside the car along the door bottom just under the carpet. This avoids problems with the tie-wraps under the car -- there just isn't anywhere to tie wrap under the middle of the car. Use "loom clamps" ordered separately to solve this problem, if you go under the car. To find the right brake wire without cutting insulation, use the fish wire from the hitch install to contact the end of the wire inside the connector (from the back). Then touch the fish wire with the continuity tester and apply the brake pedal. My brake had a four wire connector and I found the right one on the second try. If you find a hole in the firewall with a rubber plug in it, don't discard the plug. Make a short slice in it with a razor blade and push the wires through. You may have to work the wires around to get them through the carpet. Be patient. Be sure to watch all the videos and allow plenty of time, taking a break before you tackle the hard parts. Rest assured that doing it yourself is better than allowing UHaul to cut corners and charge you labor. :-) If you are doing the hitch install and four-wire harness, those are much easier. If you are installing the hitch alone, be sure to have a magnet wand for when you push the bolt up into the frame rail. If I had it to do again, I would use a little electrical tape to hold the bolts down so a slight bump wouldn't knock them up. 257414


Ive not had any trouble with the hitch or the brake controller. I can tow my tear trailer anywhere I want and the hitch protects my mufflers from damage when I go offroad. Nice extra benefit.

I own a 2008 Chevy Silverado. I ordered the brake controller - C51515 and the universal wiring adapter on Friday and received it on Tuesday. My friend who is a mechanic installed it in about an hour on Wednesday. I towed my camper trailer to Lincoln, NE (about a 5 hour trip) on Thursday and returned on Sunday. this went into my VW Touareg which requires the relay modification described in the Technical Bulletin. This is my first experience with installing and/or using an electric brake controller so I'm by no means an expert. However, the Curt Venturer was easy to order and noted other parts I would need to complete the installation and use the product. It was delivered in a timely manner and was exactly as specified. I have the Dodge Ram Truck 94 model with factory wire 7 connector plug. This is the truck that many people can't find the blue wire under the dash. 94 model didn't come with a factory wire plug under the dash like later models have. The product seems to work as expected. I think they could improve on the display: You're given a character, a dot, another character, and another dot. With only these 2 characters and 2 dots, the unit is trying to give you a lot of info, so they have to do it with abbreviations, which you have to keep the little card handy to decipher. I keep mine clipped to the sun visor. At the very least, know this - 1 dot means no trailer connected, 2 dots means there is a trailer back there. Roll a little bit and pinch the controller. If it slows you down, you're good to go. 388883

Thank goodness for you tube! trying to match the wiring diagram on the pick up to the diagram on adapter was almost a joke. It would also be nice if butt connectors were included since they are obviously needed for every installation. My other small complaint was that I read many reviews from other customers of etrailer praising the speediness of their shipping; my order showed to be "in-stock" but took nearly a week before it actually shipped. I called the company and they said to take the coach to a authorized repair facility to have it checked out. Ordered a brake controller with the adaptor harness for a 2010 GMC Canyon. Installation went fast because the truck had a towing pkg. so the 4 wires were hanging down left of column. Only thing that could have make it easier was if the wire colors matched only one wire matched so you need a test light. 222958

Product works very well with my trailer. Install was as easy as could be expected. The only issue I had was the adhesive pad I used to secure the controller mount gave out. I had to screw the mount in. Just plan on screwing in the mount to your dash and don't rely on the adhesive pad alone. 303543

You will need to youse the # C51322 brake controller adapter from Curt. This will connect the 4-ptong configuration on your Curt Brake controller to the factory port on your Explorer.
