Time-Delayed Braking

The Venturer applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Venturer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Venturer sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Curt Venturer Controls and Components

The above diagram shows the controls and components of the Curt Venturer trailer brake controller.

  1. LED display
  2. Power output control
  3. Sync control
  4. Slide-bar manual override

Output Control

During the initial setup process, use the slide-bar control on top of the Venturer to adjust the output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, slide the switch to the right. To decrease the power output, slide it to the left. The bars on the LED display indicate the output setting from 1 to 8.

Sync Setting

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide-bar control on the side of the Venturer to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, slide the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Venturer requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the Venturer, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Product Expert Kathleen M

Is this right for you? Product Expert Kathleen M says:

Yes, if you:

  • Only need a basic controller that gets the job done and doesn’t break the bank
  • Have a hard time finding a spot to mount a controller in line with the direction of travel
  • Haul a trailer with more than 2 axles or one that has hydraulic brakes

No, if you:

  • Have issues with your trailer brakes locking up

    • Simple to plug and unplug control for removal
  • 2' Long, 12-gauge wires have protective covering to deter damage

Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Curt brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Easiest install ever! The part was a perfect match for my 2015 Suburban. This is the second brake controller I've ordered and your online videos of how to install and adjust them makes etrailer my go to place for future trailer supplies/parts.

This is a "must have" if your vehicle did not come with a "tow package". If your vehicle does have a tow package try to get the correct wiring adapter and you can just plug it in without having to make wiring connections.

I have not towed the trailer with this yet but the installation went well due to E-trailers excellent video's. The toughest part was getting through the firewall in the Subaru Forrester, but I found a rubber grommet that put me right in back of the brake pedal, then I had to find the red wire to tie into. I am only 76 so I was able to figure this out despite the 93 degree day.

It got held up in mail, took a good week and a half to get here.. Since my truck was not wired for ele brakes ,I had to run wire from controller to trailer hookup...Just one wire.. With the Curt Brake Control Adapter - Dual Plug In, It plugged up to plug under dash that gave me power, ground and brake wire hookup.. Easy to install and adjust and works as it should..

we had a lot of complications in the installation, but found the big problem was with the car, not the device. it was a challenge because both the Curt people and the car people said the other was the issue. it took a Jeep service person who took it a step further and found there was a problem with a car connector pin not making contact. i also found installing the mounting bracket unto the bottom of the dash very awkward. installing it so it wasn't in the way of the driver limited the tools i could use I do like it's performance and it works great now.

Easy to install. Easy to dial-in adjustments. It has worked flawlessly. I am very happy with this controller. 7K trailer, brakes on 1 axle, 15-20 uses, 5K-10K miles.

Sorry for the late follow-up. I just wanted to let you know that the brake controller and wiring harness I purchased through eTrailer worked very well with my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L diesel. Pictures are attached for your use, as required. The trailer was an 18-foot enclosed snow machine tailer with a steel chassis. I can't remember the empty weight, but it's substantial. We towed empty and full on dry and snow covered roads from Oklahoma to Colorado and back. Even with th exhaust brake on my truck, I can't imagine towing this load through the hills and mountains without a brake controller. It's been done before, but I would say it's an unnecessary risk given the more than reasonable prices at eTrailer...it was cheap insurance pulling such a heavy rig with my family on board. The controller was definitely not your top-of-the-line model, but the adjustability and controls were more than adequate for somebody who tows occasionally. A professional may desire more proportional controls and adjustability, but not much more. This unit peformed flawlessly. Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contct me if you would like any clarification on my statements or pictures.

When used with part number C51515, easy install, hardest part of install is deciding where to drill into your new vehicle's dash to mount controller, or just ask your wife :). The included test light makes finding the correct "cold" brake wire a breeze.

The CURT Venturer brake controller works as described in the user guide. It would be better if the display LED segments were bright enough to see in bright light. My installation is different from most. I mounted the brake controller and a trailer 7-pole socket to my Trailer Valet with a magnet and use the controller to operate the electric brakes on my trailer. This is far better than relying on the Trailer Valet brake alone, especially when moving the trailer on a grade.

Just received today and installed in my 2002 Ford F-150. Very easy install! The dual plug in adapter (part# C51322) fit perfectly. Total install time was about 10 minutes. Great products so far. Have not towed a trailer yet, but based on others’ reviews, I anticipate it will work great.

Manual brake slider broke, was stuck after a few uses. However, company was good about a replacement. Have two of these-on different vehicles- that work very well otherwise. Had to buy 30 amp cycling circuit breaker type 1 , fuse and fuse holder and extra 12 ga wire 3 colors that should have been in the kit or at least told about prior to getting it installed. Unhappy about the delay it caused on the 1st one but, was prepared for the 2nd.

With this brake controller and wiring harness installation was a snap in my 2014 Ford F150 STX. The unit is so light I used velcro to attach it to the dash rather then drill holes and use screws with the bracket provided. Easy to adjust the brake sync and braking force. Just a great product for the price.

I installed the Curt C51110 along with Plug & Play C51382 into my 2016 Frontier. The installation took me about 2 minutes. I did not drill holes or use the supplied mounting bracket, just Velcro. Works perfectly!

This is much more convenient than directly wiring into a 51170, especially for trucks with factory installed hitches.

I have the Dodge Ram Truck 94 model with factory wire 7 connector plug. This is the truck that many people can't find the blue wire under the dash. 94 model didn't come with a factory wire plug under the dash like later models have. I found the wire tape to the main wiring harness about two inches from the fire wall to the right of the emergency brake paddle. This harness worked great

this went into my VW Touareg which requires the relay modification described in the Technical Bulletin. Because ground and +12V is already present in the harness, instead of running additional cables, I soldered the relay right into the cable, making it a clean plug and play setup which is 100% removable. I also bought the VW housing and wire kit to complete the install

Received product very fast. Everything I ordered was exactly what I got. Plug and play with what i ordered. It was hooked up with in less than 2 minutes then a couple minutes to screw in the bracket screws. Very pleased . I needed trailer brakes because I bought a camper and I did not want to wear out my truck brakes faster than normal. I looked around locally and on internet Etrailer had the best deal .

Straight forward installation. Works flawless. Simple and effective. Nearly impossible to find more bang for the buck. Used for hauling a twin axle trailer when loaded with my skid steet exceeds 13k lbs. Set the strength of the braking and rate of application with an emergency whammy switch. I have no reason to get anything else.

This item was easy to wire into my existing wiring and plug into the mating plug on the controller.

Please know this is not a progressive trailer brake controller - meaning the harder you push the truck's brake pedal has no effect on the trailer brakes. Think of it as either on or off (digital) and not "analog." But you CAN control the delay in when the trailer brake kicks in after pushing the pedal, AND the power at which the brakes are applied; you can also manually control it with your fingers if you install the controller near the dash; I chose to hide mine near the pedals and I adjust it based on the terrain I'm expecting the traverse. We used this controller for a cross-country trip and all over Colorado - and it worked great. Took me a while to get used to how it worked, so my brakes were quite hot when I pulled into Silverthorne after an hour of straight decline. I also learned about my truck's active engine braking while in tow mode at the same time, so consider me a novice...

Super easy installation on my 99 Dodge Ram. I have only tested this item but I will be using it on a road trip soon. although I believe it will work perfectly. easy installation I recommend purchasing the wiring harness that plugs in under the dash. you can install this in about 10 minutes or less.

I've got this unit on my 1981 Bread Truck style van and my 2000 Chevy Astro. I normally pull a 20' Tandem Axle Toy Hauler trailer that is in the 4000#+ area. I have to keep the controller turned way down it is so efficient with that weight. Verry happy and will buy one again if needed. I couldn't use the standard plug but that was expected and it wasn't a problem changing it.
