Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.

As long as the P3 controller sits level on a horizontal plane and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's P3 brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Storable Settings

Customize your P3 and store settings so that you can easily access them later. If you tow multiple trailers, or the same one but with differing loads, store the desired boost and power levels for each so that you don't have to completely reset the controller every time you switch between the trailers. Do other drivers use your towing setup? Customize the P3 display with your desired screen color, brightness and language, and you can easily return it to your preferred settings the next time you tow.

Customizable LCD Display and Advanced Diagnostics

The P3's LCD display features a distinctive look with multiple color and contrast options. It also includes a highly advanced, easy-to-understand roadside diagnostics display. The P3 advanced diagnostics not only notify you of potential problems, but they can also tell you where to begin troubleshooting.

Safety Features

The Prodigy P3 offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts. When the P3 is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to only 3.6 milliamps, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.

When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the P3's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the P3 ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at any vertical angle, and the controller will level itself automatically thanks to its 360-degree rotational range.

Note: The P3 must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

Installation is a snap. After mounting the P3 unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the P3 to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and slide it out of the bracket.

Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the connector behind your vehicle's dashboard. The exact location of the plug may vary depending on your year, make, and model of truck.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Super simple to install. I spent most of my time determining where I wanted to mount the thing. In the end, I used the detachable mount, for two reasons. 1. To reduce the number of things that I can bump against, when they are not absolutely needed. In this case, if I'm not towing, I don't need the controller. 2. As much as possible, I try not to have anything in the truck that is drawing current if it is not in use. And unplugging the cable from the back of the P3 is an absolute pain, if the P3 is up against a surface; I could not get to the "release clip" if the controller was in place. The one thing not noted in the instructions is that you need to open the fuse box inside the engine compartment, and install a 40A fuse. Fortunately, there are several videos which make this clear.

This Tekonsha Prodigy P3 was recommended to be by a friend who works at an RV dealership service center. This is my fifth trailer brake controller over a forty-year period, and my first progressive controller. I really love this controller. My truck has a factory towing package, but was manufactured prior to inclusion of integrated controllers. Since the truck has factory towing, the installation was very simple. The installation instructions were clear and complete. I would definitely recommend this controller to anyone looking for a dependable, easy to install and easy to use controller.

I mounted my Tekonsha P3 on the dash just to the left of the steering wheel. Has very easy access to quickly activate the lever on the bottom of the unit to apply maximum trailer brakes. But I needed a wiring harness almost double the length of the Tekonsha Wiring Adapter so I just purchased two and spliced them together to make one long one......yea I could have saved money and just sliced in longer wires....Am very happy with the Tekonsha P3, With this mount it makes it easy to disconnect and put into my Ford F150 or my Tacoma.

This unit was easy to use, experimented in a vacant parking lot to get the setting right for my towing of a Casita camper. I did not want to drill into my dash panel to mount it so I cut a piece of 1/2 inch plywood /painted to insert in open slot in dash below radio. I cut a wing than is for mounting the bracket to. This allows the controller to be away from my knee and within easy reach. I cut the board from a template of cardboard to see hold tight a fit I needed so I would not need screws or double sided tape. I wanted to remove it when not towing. I tapered the board so when inserted it wedged tight at the final position. It does not move when driving even on rough uneven surfaces. My tv is a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder.

Works well, easy to install and setup for my travel trailer. The only thing I don’t like is the bracket uses sheet metal screws for the pivot. Everything else is good quality, but the bracket is flimsy and the sheet metal screws won’t stay tight. I mounted it out of the way as much as possible, but I know if I ever catch that bracket with my foot, it’s likely going to shatter. Give me an all metal bracket and I’ll give it another star.

I have a 2016 Nissan Frontier with the factory towing package. Etrailer.com could not confirm that the wiring adapter works with my vehicle. The sales rep I spoke to at etrailer.com was super patient and accommodating. I bought the product not 100% sure if it would fit. It fits! Super easy install. Plugged one end into the harness under the dash and the other end into the Tekonsha brake controller. Under 1 minute install! Thank you etrailer for a great buying experience!

I have a 2018 BMW X2 that did not come with a factory tow package. I had an etrailer hitch and 4 way plug installed last year and has been perfect since. I just recently purchased a camper and needed to have a Brake controller & Brake controller 7 way deluxe kit installed. My mechanic installed them with the detailed instructions that the units came with without any issues. The Tekonsha P3 is extremely user friendly and is working flawlessly. A bit overkill for my car being I can only tow max 3500 pounds, and my camper is 1 axel. this unit is rated up to 3 axles. I look at it like this way, when I trade in my BMW I will take my P3 with me. etrailer is amazing with the support & products they provide and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks me.

I was replacing an old Tekonsha brake controller so this one fit right into the existing bracket. And the connector fit, so it only took a few minutes to install. However, I hate working under the dash, but that is not a reflection of the product.

It has been working great. Much better than the previous one. I really like the boost and the ease of changing the settings.

We are not tech savvy. Our mechanic installed the brake controller and tested it. Then we took off on a 5000 mile two and a half month road trip with our 17 foot Casita travel trailer towed by Toyota T100. We assume the brake controller worked. We found the instructions confusing, never did understand it.

Excellent controller. Works great whether I haul my RV(9000lbs), my boat (2500) or my ATV trailer. Easily calibrates itself once plugged into the car and trailer. I did have to buy the wire adapter separately to connect this to my factory harness. The adapter purchased from here worked perfectly also.

This is a perfect controller. Over 5000 miles of towing with it in the last year and no issues. Highly recommend.

Brake controller was easy to install as my truck (2006 Tundra) had the appropriate harness tucked away in the wheel well area, and the trailer was setup to accept a brake controller). Having pulled the trailer on a couple of trips without a controller, the difference was very obvious, and a vast improvement safety-wise. I leave it permanently installed as it is not in the way of anything. Definitely recommended.

Brake controller continues to work just fine. Especially like how easy it is to adjust the level of braking. I usually keep it at 9, but will it to 6 or so on wet pavement to prevent the wheels from locking up. Still highly recommended!

I started with a used controller that someone gave me. Free is ten times it's worth! I bought this controller and all my problems went away. I pull a bunch of different trailers with electric breaks and some change their GVW during the trip. The controller allows me to adapt to the needs of the times without any effort. The display gives me data useable in other situations. Love it. Now, if there was a slide mount that would allow me to move it to my other tow vehicle, then the nylon case would make sense. Still working on that solution.

One of the best on the market, installs in minutes and looks like it was meant to be there. Installed on a 2017 explorer sport and we use it regularly with a two axle camper. The colour change feature is nice and matches the ambient lighting in our vehicle( which we can also change colour). Definitely a must have for towing regularly. Always choose proportionate brake control, they cost a bit more than time control but well worth the money.

Still as awesome as the day I installed it, it will likely outlast the vehicle

Purchased this brake controller and the corresponding wiring harness and installed in my 2017 Ridgeline. Installation was easy. Factory plug is behind dash right above the parking brake. A little tight to get your hand in, but not too bad. I did not cut thru the plastic panel behind the controller like some installs. Cable is long enough and can be ran in the crack between the two plastic panels (See picture). Install turned out good and controller is easy to setup. Very happy with purchase.

Get this cable for a simple, plug-in installation. You’ll spend more time hunting for the junction already wired into the truck harness than installing your brake controller. And after installed, no worries on loosening wire connections or electrical tape wrap unraveling.

Replaced a delayed type controller on 2004 Sequoia, went smoothly (as expected). Not sure why it has a bag and can be detachable, so I used the bag to store a 2 way hand held radio in and tossed the plastic bracket. Did the first part of setup with the trailer plugged in, but won't do the drive adjusting and testing until later. The picture is what I'm towing, not what I'm stopping it with. I don't think ET has any like that for sale... (yes, that is a home built on a 5x14 utility trailer)

Installed this unit on a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee High Altitude. Followed the lead of other on this site and placed it to the left of the steering wheel and screwed the bracket into the plastic panel. It has held up and is out of the way for the most part, yet easily accessible. Towing 5000 pound of boat and trailer and if functions flawlessly.
