Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.

As long as the P3 controller sits level on a horizontal plane and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's P3 brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Storable Settings

Customize your P3 and store settings so that you can easily access them later. If you tow multiple trailers, or the same one but with differing loads, store the desired boost and power levels for each so that you don't have to completely reset the controller every time you switch between the trailers. Do other drivers use your towing setup? Customize the P3 display with your desired screen color, brightness and language, and you can easily return it to your preferred settings the next time you tow.

The P3's LCD display features a distinctive look with multiple color and contrast options. It also includes a highly advanced, easy-to-understand roadside diagnostics display. The P3 advanced diagnostics not only notify you of potential problems, but they can also tell you where to begin troubleshooting.

Safety Features

The Prodigy P3 offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts. When the P3 is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to only 3.6 milliamps, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.

When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the P3's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the P3 ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at any vertical angle, and the controller will level itself automatically thanks to its 360-degree rotational range.

Note: The P3 must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

Installation is a snap. After mounting the P3 unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the P3 to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and slide it out of the bracket.

Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the built-in connector beneath your vehicle's dashboard. To access this connector, first locate the instrument cluster finish panel in the center of you dash, near the driver's side. Carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. Plug the adaptor into the mating connector in the large gray housing behind the panel.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Today on our 2016 Ford F-150 we're going to show you how to install the Tekonsha Prodigy P3. This is a proportional trailer brake controller, works for one up to four axles, part number on it is 90195. To complete our install we're also going to use the Tekonsha plug in wiring adapter, part number on that 22292. The two buttons on the left are going to allow us to adjust up and down the maximum braking output that we want sent back to our trailer. Now this you will adjust based on road conditions, trailer weight, and things like that. The higher we've got our power or what they call gain set, the more braking force is going to be applied to the brakes on our trailer. Currently we have, you can see here it's just an icon of a small truck with a small trailer behind it.

In that situation you're not going to need boost. As you start stepping up, if we go to boost level 1, you can see that's going to be for a tandem trailer. Boost level 2, that's when we're adding a heavier tandem trailer, or boost level 3 is when we get into those bigger triple axle trailers and it really has to do with the weight of the trailer in relation to the weight of your truck. Check the manual on that it goes over it really well for you. Here a button that's not common on a lot of brake controllers, this is going to give us the option to set up our display. Also it adjusts for brake types and even a help menu to help us through if we have any questions while we're operating our controller.

You can see our manual override lever here on the bottom. This is going to allow us to go right up to whatever we've got our maximum output set at and it won't go over it. We don't have to worry about in an emergency pushing it all the way over and then all of a sudden locking up the wheels on our trailer. This allows us to add a little bit of braking to the trailer if we want, or gradually increase it. Now the P3 has several safeguards that are built in. One thing I like is that during prolonged stops the braking force is going to gradually decrease, that's going to the rear of our trailer so we don't have to worry about over heating.

It has built in protection to protect itself and also the breakaway system for any kind of shorts, and when not in use it has a very very low milliamp draw so we don't have to worry about it draining the battery in our tow vehicle. The P3 is a proportional brake controller so there's going to be an accelerometer located right inside. It's a self leveling system so once we have it in place the accelerometer is going to pick up any time we try to slow down. We hit the brakes in the vehicle, it senses that, and it's instantly going to send power to the trailer to help out, versus something like a time delayed brake controller. In an emergency if we hit our brakes really hard it still takes the same amount of time to ramp up to maximum power whereas with our P3 if we hit our brakes really hard in an emergency situation it ramps up to peak power very quickly. If it's more of an every day stopping situation where we're just lightly hitting our brakes, well it's going to do the same it's going to mirror that just lightly applying the brakes to the trailer so we're not over working the components of the trailer itself. The P3 is also going to offer five programmable settings so whether you've got different drivers or different trailers or maybe it's loaded differently one time then the next, you can pre-program these in here so you won't have to deal with changing it every time.

Under the help menu the troubleshooting guide is going to display to us the battery voltage in our vehicle, the stoplight output, the voltage output, and also the output current. That'll help us troubleshoot if the event anything we're to start happening with our controller to where it wasn't operating properly. The first thing we need to do is get our shroud out of the way that's going to be underneath this side panel which we're going to remove. This is going to have a bolt located right up here on the side. You're going to have one on each side. That's what it's going to look like. Take the one out here on the driver's side, and do the same thing on our passenger's side. Now on our passenger's side we want to reach right up at the very tip of this shroud, just about there, and if we pull out on it there's a little clip that we separate that allows this side to come free. We should have another clip there, and then we'll get the last one right over on that corner and pull it out. We'll set that aside, we'll put it back in once we get our brake controller in. Now we'll come right down here to the bottom and we just want to carefully work this out and separate our clips. Now we've got our little cubby hole that's right behind that rectangular shape hole. It should be plugged right into the back of that. You see it right there What we're going to do is just allow that to come down and we'll pull it right over here. You see we can pull it out right here to where it'll be easy to connect to. Now we'll get our dashboard reassembled here. Cubby hole is going to go back in. Now the key with getting this put back together is just making sure that our clips line up. Now let's put our shroud back in place. Now we're ready to grab our pigtail, line it up and slide it in. You want to hear that audible click and then you'll be able to push and pull on it without it coming apart. That way we'll know we have a good connection. Next we need to just set that aside for now, let's get our bracket mounted. We'll position our bracket where we want it. We have the option of coming up here on the dashboard if we choose to or really wherever it's convenient as long as we're staying within that range of motion that we talked about. We'll use the provided screws and then get that mounted in position. You always want to check behind, make sure you're not going to screw into anything, any wires or anything like that. All right, perfect. Now just plug our pigtail in, right to the back of our controller, we'll see it light up indicating it's working. Then we're ready to align the holes in the side with the holes in our bracket and we'll put in our machine screws and we can tighten those down. Now we'll bundle up our excess there, there's a little bracket there that's really nice for mounting to. You can go right to that and that'll provide us with a nice anchor point just to keep our wires up and out of the way so we don't have to mess with them heading down the road. Just trim off our excess there and now we're ready to hook up our trailer tester and make sure it's working. As I plug my seven pole into my tester or in your case if you're plugging it into the back of your vehicle it should now recognize that we do in fact have a trailer connected. If for some reason the trailer we're to come disconnected as we we're heading down the road, as you can see it's going to flash at us and indicate to us in red, "Trailer not connected", "Trailer disconnected" that way we'll know that there's an issue. With everything working as it should, that's going to complete today's installation of the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 trailer brake controller, part number 90195 on our 2016 Ford F-150.

Hi, I got my Item: 90195 and shipping was fast. I was able to get the break controller installed in my 2012 Cadillac Escalade Luxury using the etrailer.com video guide for a 2009 Cadillac Escalade. The install and wiring was the exact same as the video however my wires under the dash or wire bundle did not have a wiring sticker. The color of the wires were the same as in the video. This etrailer video is great and I used it to get my controller installed in about 1.5 hours. My install was trouble free. This weekend I was able to test out the my new P3 90195 controller and get it calibrated with my 29 foot travel trailer this weekend. Used a B2 setting with 8.0 power. The user guide and instructions you get with the controller help you know what settings to use and how to set the power level. This is my second controller as I got a P2 Tekonsha from etrailer about 4-5 years back and installed it in a 2007 trail blazer. This older 2P break controller is still working great. I have been rather happy with the quality of the Tekonsha controllers I have. I have not had to call etrailer for support or install questions but did receive a few emails from them to check in with me to ensure I got my shipment and offer me help. They do a good job supporting and responding to their customers and provide an A+ customer experience. 305014

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164083

George J, Wanted to write good points about your customer service and the Tekonska braking system. Included are multiple pictures of the unit installed on my VW SUV. First off, I am not an expert in any way in installing and wiring. I had the good fortune of having Steve Kunzel, master mechanic at Westside VW in Minneapolis install the unit.(see Fig 1) The first unit sent did not function and was quickly replaced by etrailer.com at no charge. Second unit is pictured (fig 2) and works well. The trailer is used for caring dogs and gear to various dog events and hunting. The trailer weight is about 4500 pounds and the electronic braking system is necessary for good control of the SUV and trailer when braking. Writing my one year follow-up review on my Tekonsha Prodigy 3. Well so far so good, works just like day one. I have it installed on my 2012 Toyota Tundra hauling a 28' travel trailer and it does an awesome job. I actually recommended this to my neighbor right before he was going to buy another brand without the manual brake override lever and he thanks me very time he gets back from a trip. I don't use it as often but I've been towing for a while and this is his first trailer so he feels safer using it, I know I do. So if you ask me I do recommend getting this brake controller. Easy installation and adjust to your braking power. Has lots of features and makes you customize your braking power. I also like the case it comes with to protect it when not in use. That's basically all I have for this controller. 565952

I installed this on a 2018 Subaru Outback. On my model the pale green wire was the brake stop light wire. The install was a little daunting but with patience and time it can be done, don’t give up!! One important thing to note is that THE READOUT ON THE BRAKE CONTROLLER WILL SHOW A NUMERIC OUTPUT WHEN YOU PRESS THE BRAKE IF INSTALLED CORRECTLY. Of course you need to have the trailer plugged in first. If you are driving and testing after the install and you don't get a power readout when you press the brakes you may have a problem with your brake stop light splice. That’s where my problem was. I had to buy some additional wire splicers because the ones provided were too big. Two very important things to remember. If installed correctly go put your ear by the wheels with brakes (on the trailer) and get someone to pull the manual brake lever. You should hear a hum sound. That means it’s working. Remember, if you’re in a bind and you need to use your trailer and your brake pedal isn’t activating the electric brakes but the manual brake is. You can use your manual brake instead. But don’t do this long term, I’m sure it’s not good for it. This is just some advice in the install. Otherwise it’s been a great brake controller! 530029

I haven't used a lot of other brake controllers but I wanted to buy one that was easy enough to use and intelligent enough to where my girlfriend and/or mother could operate it and not have any sort of stopping issues (both have next to zero experience towing a trailer). From the small amount I've gone out and tested this, it works absolutely awesome and is very easily adjustable. I took my 26' enclosed trailer out with my 3800 lb car inside and the truck stopped almost exactly the same as with no trailer at all. My favorite parts are the fact that I can easily adjust the boost settings by clicking a single button and that it can distinguish between a gradual stop and a panic stop and adjust trailer braking force accordingly within a fraction of a second. Got cut off quite a few times like is normal in Chicago traffic and was able to hit the brakes and KNOW that everything was going to stop when I needed it to. Worth the extra money in my opinion to have a controller that I know is going to work great every time and that anyone in my family could operate correctly if needed. I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. This new P3 operates much better than my first, entry level controller. I wired it in my 2006 Jeep Commander that is used to tow my 2015 4,700 lb Rockwood Mini Lite trailer. The wiring instructions were clear, as were the initial set-up procedures. The P3 activates the brakes very smoothly without the lurching I had with the prior controller. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I am often driving over mountain passes, and with the P3 I am now confident my trailer brakes will function in a smooth, progressive manner. The Tekonsha P-3 was reasonably easy to install, and works like a champ. I had to spend a bit of extra time fishing wires because my truck didn't come with factory tow package wiring, but even then it wasn't hard, just time-consuming to route the wires where they won't get chafed. The controller comes with a nifty click-in mount, but I just used the U-bracket (also included) because I have no need to move it between vehicles. It's nice to have the choice of how to mount it. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow, even for a non-plug-in installation. It took me a little while to get it adjusted so that the trailer brakes didn't lock up on hard stops, but once I got it there, it's great - no more feeling like my trailer is going to push the truck through the intersection when I stop. It's easy to adjust for different trailer weights. It's almost too easy to adjust, in fact: I'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure I don't accidentally hit the "boost" button, which is designed for heavier trailers - I wish there were some way to disable the boost feature from the menus. Overall I'm delighted with the P-3. I like the text interface instead of cryptic numbers that so many units use, and I love the way it performs. 49045

Great brake controller! I installed this unit in my 2016 Ford F250 4x4 in just over 30 minutes. Of course, I spent a little time (about an hour or so) in advance on the etrailer website researching how to install this controller. After watching a few videos and reading a few detailed reviews I was ready to go. I did order a plastic trim removal tool set on [site] prior to this installation. ** NOTE to etrailer: Think about offering a set of trim removal tools for sale to your customers - very important!**. I ordered the Tekonsha P3 for my 2016 VW Touareg TDI. etrailer had a really great video about how to install it. It was a little difficult finding the electrical connection under the dash. The plug for the harness was under some grey foam rubber. I was ready to give up until I felt something that may be a plug under the foam. I scratched and tore the foam until I tore a hole in it. I then found the connector under the foam. This is all done working blind with one hand. I had already purchased the wiring harness coupler wires and parts from the VW Dealership Parts Department. When the Tekonsha P3 arrived, I assembled the harness with the dealer parts (wires and connector plug) and the electrical connector that came with the P3. I triple checked my work when building the connector harness. I covered the wires with some protective wire wrap after securing all connections with electrical tape and cable ties. My wiring harness was great looking. I had to reach under the dash, working blind, and I connected the harness to the plug under the dash. I had lubricated the plug with a small amount of synthetic grease. I had to work with one hand. There was not anything behind the connector plug to push against. So, I made a tool with a small piece of wood. I put the wood behind the plug and this gave me something to push against. I was elated when I felt and heard the coupler plug snap into place. I installed the new brake controller bracket and brake controller. The result was no power at all to the brake contoller. I took the Tourareg to the Dealership with instructions to program the computer for towing. Keep in mind the Dealership does not install brake controllers. The technician did a great job. However, he told me that I may have assembled the wiring harness wrong. I said I would go and check it out. When I hooked up the trailer and P3 brake controller, it all worked fine. I had power to the brake contoller. I programmed the Tekonsha P3 with my settings into the P3's memory. The P3 has a nice electronic display. The Tekonsha P3 works great for towing. All trailer lights work and there is 12 volt power charging the trailer house batteries. I did a test drive and I noticed nice even braking on the trailer brakes. So, I am happy with the Tekonsha P3. It works great on the 2016 VW Touareg. I am starting to think you may be on your own when it comes to brake controller installation. The dealership may have to program the tow vehicles computer. In my case, the computer had to be programmed. I was provided a loaner car and there was no charge for programming the computer. Thank you Volkswagen. 541827

Installed P3 this weekend in 2013 Tundra Crewmax with towing package and pre-wire. Extremely easy, even with the center console installation. Will let the photos tell the story. Did have to combine the P3 included harness with the additional OEM harness to gain the length I needed. Plug and play with the pre-wire. Hooked up to trailer and set boost levels for varying loads. Works great! Vast improvement over older model Tekonsha controller in my Ram 2500 Diesel. Pull a Kiefer BP horse trailer: about 3600 lbs empty, 7500 with 3 quarter horses and gear. Usually pull 6-8 times per year, with only 1-2 horses. Short distance and flat terrain. It took about an hour to install. Dad is a retired USAF/FAA radar technician with every tool known to man. To remove the small center console cubby hole you need to open both 12V outlets, then using your thumb and index finger, slowly work the cubby out. I used a very thin straight edge screwdriver to get it started as well. Helps to have two people. Once out, I used a rotozip tool to cut the back out. I thought I could get away with simply drilling a hole for the wires, but you will need more room. Recommend leaving a lip on the bottom edge where you cut out so small items dont fall behind your dash. Hope this helps.

Great write up Chris M. I just mounted mine and would like to make one note about the little yellow clips that hold in the console. They are very good at making a quick exit to some unknown location but I was able to fine the Toyota part number incase someone may need it. It is 90467-10203. They cost about a dollar. I got lucky and finally found the one I lost and saved myself a dollar.

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 electric brake controller to use on our 2017 Pacifica Touring-L Plus with towing package. Our Pacifica was pre-wired for an electric brake controller. So along with P3, I ordered the plug-in wiring adapter 3045-P made for the Pacifica. First I determined where to mount the P3, making sure the wiring adapter would reach the P3. I located the Pacifica's pre-wired harness. I had to remove an empty plug that was installed into the receptacle on the end of the pre-wired harness. I then plugged the the adapter into the now empty pre-wired receptacle and then the other end into the P3 (the P3 lit up immediately). I zip tied the wires of the adapter in a way that it would not interfere with anything under the dash. The install was then completed. I liked how easy it was to install everything. The P3 will be used to control the brakes on our R-Pod travel trailer. Adjusting the P3 was as easy as reading the instructions that came with it. The display, when the controller is not in use, will light up when using the vehicles brakes (trailer not connected). When the vehicle is not in use the display will eventually turn off. The hitch and controller was installed on a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. It took roughly 15 min to install the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, plug it in and program it. As far as the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch, I cut the hole in the bed and cut the heat shield out the day before while I was waiting for the hitch to arrive. The next day my parts arrived, I laid out all the parts to make sure everything was there and then started the install. I didn't want to cut the 1"x1/2" notch out of my fender well to get the angle iron in so I spent about 15 min. trying to get it up on top the frame from underneath the truck. A waste of time. Do like the instructions say, cut the notch and slide it straight across the top of the frame. It will save time and aggravation. After getting both braces in place I ran a piece of rope down thru the hole and pulled the hitch plate up into place and tied it off. I installed all the bolts finger tight, put the side plates on and tightened everything up. It looks nice and I saved myself a $435.00 installation fee. With out a lift and without taking my rear tires off it took about 3 1/2 hrs. to install by myself. The only thing I want to say to B&W is don't place the heavy metal hitch parts on the booklet with the packets of Lithium Grease in it, they bust as the picture shows. Overall, this probably the best brake controller on the market, as far as braking performance. It provides braking as smooth and safe as is possible with electric brakes. Adjustments are easy, with provisions for remembering the settings for multiple trailers. The manual control toggle/knob is very sturdy and smooth operating. The P3 controller is not without some design faults. The supplied brackets are OK for some installations, but they both position the controller too far from the mounting surface, often creating a knee-banger situation. While trying to figure out how to mount the controller in our new 2015 Nissan Xterra, I finally gave up on the brackets and used some industrial quality 3M dual-lock fastener (like velcro on steroids) to mount the controller. The controller is securely mounted right up against the lower dash panel, but is still is removable, if needed (see my photo). Although the curvy potato-like shape is aesthetically pleasing (to some), it would have been much easier to mount, with less wasted space, if the four sides were straight. The body of the connector that plugs into the rear of the unit should have been designed so that it is recessed into the unit, instead of sticking out almost an inch. That would have made the controller able to be installed with its rear panel right up against something, when necessary. Finally my biggest complaint is with the quality (or lack thereof) of the LCD display. The display on my controller is barely readable even when viewing perpendicular to the screen. If you are off axis by more than 20-30 degrees the display is unreadable. Rarely is it possible to mount a brake controller where the driver has a straight shot at the display. This is almost never the case. Modern LCD technology provides affordable displays that have an incredible off-axis visibility. I would have thought that Tekonsha would have included a display that is up to the same level of quality as the rest of the P3 controller. Instead, it appears they used a bottom of the line LCD with 1980’s technology. I tried all combinations of settings for color and brightness. Some were worse than others, but none of them were good. 233610

Bought a Rockwood A122 camper that I pull with a 2018 Toyota Tacoma (I previously had a 2017 Tacoma). Bought the Prodigy P3 after doing a bunch of research online. When it showed up I was kind of blown away with how easy it was to install. The Tacoma has a Trailer Brake connector stuffed up under the left foot kick panel. Popped the panel off, found the connector and hooked it up. That's it! Then zipped two screws in the mount on the lower lip of the dash which no one will ever see even if the brake controller gets removed. Took me a little fiddling around to get it set for the right amount of braking that suited me but I have yet to touch the thing or mess with it since installing it. It just WORKS. It's small, unobtrusive (if you mount it in the right place) and it just works day in and day out with a minimum of interaction. Get one of these. 574016

Seems to work good, but the trailer brakes could not be adjusted to lock up no matter how high I adjusted the settings on the controller. According to the owners manual it should be able to lock up. Could it possibly be defective? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 575180


The first thing youll want to check is that the brakes are properly adjusted. Jack up the trailer and use a brake adjusting tool to run the star wheel on the adjuster down until the wheel cant be turned by hand. Then, back it off by about 10 notches of the star wheel, or until theres only a very slight brake drag. If the brakes are properly adjusted, use a voltmeter to test the wiring at each brake magnet while a helper activates the manual override on the brake controller. You should see about 10-12 volts, but NO LESS than 10 volts. If youre seeing less than 10 volts, check the connector on the trailer and on the vehicle, making sure nothing is damaged or corroded. Trace the brake feed wire from the trailer connector back to the brake magnets, making sure that all connections are secure and that the grounds are connected to clean, bare metal. Examine the brake magnets themselves, as well. If the face of the magnet is excessively grooved or worn to the point where the copper wiring in the magnet is visible, the braking effectiveness will be greatly reduced and replacing the magnet would be recommended. Its usually recommended to replace the drum and magnet at the same time, if the armature surface of the drum shows any wear.

After tiring of jerking, over reacting brakes from my trailer, or delayed almost no brakes (there was no in between) from my old 90's era Tekonsha Voyager XL (that has served me well through three trucks...until this last year), I finally decided to upgrade. What a difference! The P3 is silky smooth. I took it for a test run pulling a 8x21 enclosed trailer (empty at 3800#), 2 brake axles. Was easy to dial in. I started at a much lower setting then the instructions say. I never set my brake controller by "if the trailer tires slide, reduce power" meathod. I just paid $500.00 for good trailer tires (not china bombs) and I'm not fond of locking them up on pavement. So, i started low and worked my way up until I liked the braking action. Display is easy to read, day and night, even with my 53 year old eyes. It does concern me to see several pictures and one install video of the controller mounted below the dash. Very difficult to reach the overide without compromising your driving position and view of the road. Maybe it's just from towing with a controller with heavy loads for so many years...when you need to grab that overide there is a good chance its because there is a 'situation'. I'm right handed so mine is mounted just above my right knee. I only have to extend my arm to reach the overide. In fact, I make a habit of occasionally using the overide just to make sure I know how it feels...in an emergency, I don't want any other surprises. lol. I bought this for my Chevy Silverado 1500. For the most part, its pretty good. I tow pretty often but I don't use the brake controller much -- usually I'm towing things that don't need it. But, I have it, and its ready for when I do need it. The good: * Its nice and featureful and has a very top-of-the-line feel to it. * Its easy to read, easy to use. * Very easy to unplug or completely detach from the car when you just want to store it -- this is a big plus for someone like me who isn't using it every day. The bad: * It came with 2 different frames; one billed as "permanent" and one billed as "portable" (i.e. easily removable). The permanent one wouldn't fit right in the space I had (wasn't the fault of the device), so I had to use the portable one. The permanent one is the one that's a big metal frame, and the portable one is the smaller frame + the plastic piece that looks kinda like a spider attacking the device. The portable mount is actually pretty flimsy and it is really hard to get the device in and out of it. Once you pull it out of the mount, it doesn't really want to go back in. So I just leave my device in all the time, and unplug it when I'm not using it. Fortunately, its really easy to plug and unplug from the electrical system, which is what I cared about. * Installation was confusing. This is my 1 year follow-up review so, unfortunately, I don't remember exactly why I was confused ... There was 1 wire that was really unclear where it connected. My Chevy wires were labeled a certain way and the device's manual described the wiring using very different language. I ultimately matched wire gauges to figure out which one goes where and that worked out for me. But there was an extended period of head-scratching where I was trying to figure out the wiring. Ultimately, it's a good device, but if the portable mount was a little easier to use I'd give it a 5 star. Because its kind of shoddy in that respect, I've got to mark it down a star. 358859

Easy install on my 2010 F 150 XLT. There are 2 possible locations for the trailer wiring harness if your vehicle did not come equipped with the mfg brake control. Consult owners manual. My harness was located below steering colum behind lower dash. I routed my harness to the left side behind the parking brake release lever. You may have to remove the outer sleeve of the factory harness depening on your vehicle. Mounted the mounting bracket with double sided foam tape and predrilled holes before screwing in place. This unit was little bit of an issue to install (not too bad though), I also bought the # 3050-P Tekonsha Plug in wiring adaptor (This makes it very easy to connect to the existing harness in the Nissan without hacking the wiring to connect to it), the lower part of the dash had to come apart so I could route the wiring to the area where I wanted to install the unit which is where Nissan would install their unit as you can see in the photo, plugged it in and it came up as instructions said it would, seems to be okay will have to wait and see when I go to use it. 575462

The brake controller itself is not a vehicle specific item, itll include a universal harness that terminates in blunt cut wires that can be wired directly to the vehicle. There are a few dozen different vehicle-specific harnesses that will allow a plug and play installation, if your vehicle is equipped with the connector under the dash. The vehicle-specific harnesses arent included with the brake controller, theyd need to be purchased separately.

Purchased the Tekonsha P3 and the plug-and-play harness 3017-P for my 2017 Toyota Tacoma with factory tow package. First let me say that I love doing business with etrailer.com. The customer service is top notch, the information available on the website is thorough and helpful, and my orders are always fulfilled correctly and timely. I will remain a loyal customer. As far as the P3 controller goes, this is a great product and works exactly as advertised. I just installed it so no long trips yet, but in a few short test pulls it handles both my 28 foot travel trailer and my flatbed utility trailer just fine. The wiring adapter was plug and play just as advertised and made installation a breeze. It's a little tough to find the plug on the Tacoma and it's necessary to remove some trim to get at it unless you've got much smaller hands and are more limber than I am. The plug is way down low on the left behind and above the dead pedal and Toyota doesn't give much slack. I spent way more time just mocking up and trying to figure out where to mount the controller than I did actually doing the job. Not many good places to choose from on these newer Tacomas. I almost settled on the center cubby area, but it was going to be a lot more work than I wanted and besides I would lose some useful storage space and a cupholder. Didn't want to put it anywhere my knee would smash it because I'm a pretty tall and big guy. Settled on the area shown because I could make a little hole in it easily to run the wire through and the otherwise useless little cubby provides some extra strength/and stability to the back of the unit for mounting. It's nice and tight there, still removable, and very easy to reach and operate. I can remove the controller easily when I am not using it, and it comes with a handy little storage bag. Sorry for the poor quality pics but hopefully they will give some idea of how this worked. There's probably an easier way to get at the back of that cubby to drill it than removing the whole panel, but it was no big deal and took all of two minutes to do once I had decided on a mounting location. 495742

2015 Ford F-150

We own a 2015 Ford F150 SuperCrew, 3.5 EcoBoost with Max Tow package. Of course, equipped like this, the truck came with a factory-installed, integral brake controller. That's good news. The bad news is that there various internet forums report there to be an unusually high failure rate of these factory controllers. So, being a bit paranoid about being out in the middle-of-nowhere in our truck and travel trailer and suddenly having (a) locked brakes, or (b) no brakes at all, I decided to install a high quality aftermarket controller. Based on company reputation and prior experience with Tekonsha products, I selected the P3 and proper 'plug and play' wiring harness. Following Tekonsha's instructions as well as vehicle-specific on-line videos, I found the installation to be super easy. I elected NOT to take the truck to the Ford dealer to have the computer re-flashed for the absence of the factory controller. Now, each time the truck is started, I have to click "OK" to clear the 'TRAILER BRAKE FAULT" message... to me that's no big deal. Also, when compared side-by-side, the Ford controller seems flimsy and cheap, whereas the P3 has a quality feel, fit and finish. Wanting the controller to be easy to see and easy to reach, I chose to install the P3 on top of the dash. So, I am delighted with the Tekonsha P3 and - as always - with etrailer's service. 402275

I don't know where to start when reviewing this company. First, the products they sell are top notch, at prices no one can beat. Secondly their online support with videos and detailed installation procedures is "unmatched" by any online company. If they can't walk or talk you through it, it probably can't be done! But perhaps the best quality product they have is their staff. When you call they are most courteous, extremely helpful, and will go above and beyond making your transaction right. I have purchased from etrailer numerous times for these very reasons. And my latest purchase ran into shipping problems (not etrailers fault) and yet Stacey A., Greg & others whose names I forgot (my apologies) made it right. The actual installation of the prodigy P3 took less than 5 minutes with the plug-in adapter. If you have a factory tow package get the adapter-no double checking each wire to be sure it is right, no cutting, or wire nuts-just plug and go. another 2 or 3 minutes to set it. Honestly and it has been said in other reviews- it took longer to get the screwdriver and then figure exactly where I wanted it! checked settings at the school parking lot and it works as advertised. the brakes on my truck told me thank you for relieving them of some of the load. Excellent Product and Easy to Install. My truck (2008 Dodge Ram 1500) came with factory 4 wire Harness, not the 7 wire Factory harness. If yours comes with a 7 Wire harness Then Its a plug and play in a matter of 10 minutes. If yours is like mine and your a perfectionist when it comes to wiring and have any forethought of if you need to take a part or remove other things under the dash in the future and this wiring not getting in the way your looking at about 2-3 hours. If you want to use butt connectors and your looking at 1.5 - 2 hours. The wiring diagram is pretty straight forward. I went ahead and wired the auxillary line since the cable comes with 2 wires in it. I added some pics. The cold side of the brake light switch on a 2008 dodge ram is the tan/white wire. 527350

Installed this on my GMC 3500 Duramax with factory integrated brake controller. Not happy with the integrated brake controller on my truck, had problems from the start on 3 different occasions with "Service Trailer Brake" warning on DIC, which of course means NO TRAILER BRAKES. Decided the P3 was the perfect solution. Many more features than the IBC, plus the P3 will also work with electric over hydraulic disc brakes should we ever need that in the future. Fairly easy install on this particular truck, the most difficult thing was running the brake wire from the controller to the 7-pin plug. (This is only required when installing in a vehicle with a factory installed brake control) Well worth the extra effort. 39447


Recommendation...dont mount it to low out of reach. When you have a trailer go astray...your seat belt will tighten and then you cant reach your controller to help you out. Believe me I mounted my too low and out of reach, and I was seconds from ditching the truck and trailer. Was very lucky. Just a recommendation.
