Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking, or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently.

So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

As long as the I-Command is properly mounted according to the included instructions, the controller will automatically level, sense the tow vehicle's deceleration, and adjust the trailer's braking accordingly. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The I-Command offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 14 percent or 28 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

Approximate Gross Trailer WeightBoost LevelIncrease in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVWB114%
Equal to tow vehicle GVWB1 or B214% or 28%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVWB1, B2, or B3* 28%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVWB2 or B3* 28%

* Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Safety Features

The I-Command offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power.

LED Display

The I-Command has a digital LED display to keep you informed of your trailer's braking. The display shows the gain setting when the control is activated. It can also be used to check for connectivity with your trailer, to determine your boost setting, and to troubleshoot.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

Because this controller operates with an internal inertia sensor, it must be mounted between -20 degrees and 70 degrees in the vertical plane. The I-Command must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

The automatic leveling feature of the I-Command ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Mount the controller at a vertical angle that is between 0 degrees (level) and 70 degrees, and the controller with level itself automatically.

Installation of the I-Command requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the controller, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers
part number: 3016

Install your electric brake controller quickly and easily with this custom wiring adapter. Simply plug one end of the adapter into your brake controller and then plug the other end into the built-in harness beneath your vehicle's dash.

Features:

  • Wiring adapter eases installation of your electric brake controller
  • Custom connector end plugs into the built-in port beneath the dash of your vehicle
  • Other end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller
    • Compatible time-delayed brake controllers: Draw-Tite Activator I (5100), Draw-Tite Activator II (5500), Draw-Tite Activator III (5520) and Tekonsha PowerTrac (39523)

  • 30-5/8" in length (including plugs)
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector in your vehicle's junction box. The box is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpeting.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Brake Controller - Proportional Controller - 5535 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller. This controller is going to activate the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action, it's going to automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on deceleration of the towed vehicle, and it activates immediately, so there's no pausing like when using time-delayed brake controllers. This unit's also going to automatically level. The brake control will automatically acquire the proper level setting, it's also going to automatically adjust as you travel up or down hills. A few unique features about this system. As you can see here, we have the easy to access buttons, we're going to have the boost setting right here on top and it says 'Boost' right here on the disc plate, so that way we know these button go with that setting. On this side we're going to have the gain control, and it says 'Gain' right there so we know that these buttons are associated with that control.

The boost setting is going to let you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated, so this is setting is great in situations where you're hauling heavier loads or your trailer weight is significantly more than your vehicle weight. It's going to be available in three settings, you're going to have Boost 1, Boost 2, and Boost 3. It's going to allow you to get full power output faster by pressing the plus buttons right here, or the minus buttons to achieve maybe a smoother braking action. You can get full output power faster by pressing the plus button to increase the activation speed, and then you can achieve smoother braking by pressing the minus button to supply power gradually. Located right here at the front is going to be the easy to read digital display. This is going to be an LED display, it's going to show the controller activity.

The unit is short-circuit protected. On this side you're going to have the gain setting, this is going to establish the maximum amount of power available to the trailer brakes. As the gain increases, and you just the plus or minus buttons to do that, so it's very easy to adjust, but as that increases what that means is more power is going to be available to the brakes when the brake peddle in the vehicle is pressed or when the manual control is used. We do have the built in slide bar manual override right here at the front, very easily accessible. Gain is going to be shown from zero to ten, with zero being the minimum and ten being the maximum. That simply represents a percentage of the full power.

It's a quick and easy installation, your mounting bracket and hardware are included, and then it's going to be able to plug into a vehicle specific brake control adapter. Those are sold separately and can be used for certain applications to help reduce installation time. Again, this is designed for trailers with up to four axles or A-brake assemblies. It's designed for use with electric brakes only. When mounting this, you can mount this anywhere from -20 degrees nose down, anywhere to 70 degrees nose up in the vertical plane.

You want to make sure this is parallel with the direction of travel, but anywhere in between those indicators that I gave you, -20 degrees nose down or 70 degrees nose up, this is still going to be fully functional. All the leveling, the sensor inside, that's going to be functional as long as you stay within those increments, or those measurements of negative 20, 70 degrees nose up. Really nice design, it's a nice small compact unit as well. Here at the widest part it's only going to measure about 2-3/4" wide, and then the overall length is going to be about 4-1/4", and then the depth or the thickness is only 1-1/8". It's going to be covered with a unlimited lifetime warranty. Now what I want to do is I just want to show you how easily that display can be read. I'm just going to hook up a couple of wires here today just to send some power to it, I'm going to hook up a ground power then the power wire, and then we thumb through some of the settings and you can get an idea for how easy it is to read and how easy it is to see that display. NC is going to stand for Not Connected, but it's still going to allow us to kind of go through. We have our gain setting, you can see how that easily adjusts with a simple press of the button, and again you can go all the way up to ten, you can hold it down, which is going to allow you to adjust quicker, all the way up to ten. Then you can press individual to make finer adjustments, or you can hold it down and it's going to go all the way down to zero. You can adjust to anywhere in between that setting, really nice design. You're also going to have the manual override right here, which for me it's just saying I'm not connected, which is correct since I'm just feeding off a power box. Then you're going to have your boost setting. You're going to have Boost 1, Boost 2, Boost 3, then just the B shows you that you're in the boost settings, then you have 1, 2 and 3 to choose from. That's going to do it for today's look at the Draw Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller.

The Tekonsha (item 3016) wiring harness allowed me to move my Tekonsha brake box controller from a Honda to a GM product with effortless ease. Instructions of where the harness connection was located in the new location (exact fit). The ability to have no splicing of wires and a clean, factory style, connection for a low price with a trusted manufacturer was a must. Always happy with Tekonsha products and ETrailer service. 513732

I put this controller in my Chevy truck and even though it is the cheapest one you can find, it works great. A few days later, the "top rated" one in my Suburban quit working, so now I have two of these controllers. They are adjustable for each of my trailers. You could spend six times as much for other controllers but I can't see that you get a better product than this one. 501979

A year later I still love both of these. I pulled heavy trailers over the Rockies this year without a second thought. With the same controller, I pull my flatbed empty and dont worry about the tires smoking. 5 stars.

Great product with very easy install and even better customer service, placed an order late one afternoon and chose the wrong shipping for time I needed it by, gave them a call and they had no problem at all changing it for me and I received the product early the next morning as needed. 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

As expected, service and pricing from etrailer was exceptional. 8th order in the past year and always satisfied with the customer service side of a transaction. The cable was "factory" from Tekonsha and was of very good quality, but it was about 8" too short for me to mount the brake controller on the right side of the steering column away from the door. I had an old wiring adapter from my previous truck and cut and spliced in a 12" section so that I could mount the controller where it was least in the way and easily accessible to me, the driver. And, if I need to move the controller in the future I now have plenty of slack. One more step, but not a big deal. All is good! 559160

2000 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased and used the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller on my 2000 Silverado with good results. When I got a new-to-me 2104 Silverado, I thought I could just buy a new cable and I was correct. It was delivered quickly and plugged in with no issues. The new truck's lower dash panel is more vertical than the older truck and I didn't want to drill holes in it for the mount, so I purchased heavy duty Velcro tape and cut it to fit. It has worked without issues. 446054

This Plug-In adapter made installing the brake controller so easy. Hooked up within 5 minutes and ready to go. So much easier than hard wiring it. And if I want to use the brake controller in another vehicle I can just unplug it. I only wish the wiring harness was a little longer. The only place to put my controller where I could see it was on my right side and I barely was able to mount it there. 571109

I installed this in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for pulling a travel trailer. We pulled the trailer from the Denver area all the way to the California coast. For anyone who has driven across 80, you know what challenges face a camper making that journey. No wonder pioneers left family heirlooms along the trail in the old days! This break controller made the trip possible for me. It worked well, and the trailer never ran the Jeep over. I remember engaging the trailer breaks quite a bit on the hill going into Salt Lake City. Worked like a charm! 454219

I tried finding the controller I wanted locally which ended up costing more time and money Then it should have. One of the places I stopped at was getting info from etrailer web page then adding his ridiculous mark up. When I got back to my office I ordered it from etrailer myself and bought exactly what I was trying to find locally but for much less money even with two day shipping. Beyond all that etrailer is the easiest place to shop and their tracking of my shipment couldn't have been any easier. From here on out if etrailer has what I'm looking for life will be just that much better. Thanks etrailer. 388783

I purchased this for my 2014 Chevy Silverado long bed regular cab 4x4 work truck. It plugged in and worked fine and is great quality. The only disappointment was that it is too short in length. I would have liked to mount the controller right of the steering wheel, but it does not reach. It is only long enough to reach left of steering wheel. Not the end of the world. It works great. 121121

Ordered this for my 2008 Toyota Tundra to be able to pull a 25 foot travel trailer. This has been the easiest install. It takes literally 5-10 minutes to locate your quick connects and attach it to the dash. I mounted it as close to the middle console to help keep it away from my knee and legs. I used a black magic marker to blend the screws into the black frame. Once connected it automatically does everything else for you. I would recommend strongly on purchasing this trailer brake connector/quick connect along with using this etrailer. The shipping was extremely fast and communication was great prior to its arrival. I watched a YouTube video on my truck to make it even easier to install. 371551

THE CONTROLLER MOUNTED EASILY AND PERFORMED AS STATED. I'VE BEEN CONTENT WITH THE DRAW-TITE DELAY STYLE CONTROLLER I USED FOR 30 YEARS BUT THE PROPORTIONAL STYLE 5535 IS A MUCH BETTER CONCEPT. IT ACTS LIKE THE TOW VEHICLES BRAKES BY APPLYING MORE BRAKE THE HARDER THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. I'VE ONLY USED IT ON ONE TRIP ON DRY ROADS WITH NO HARD STOPS SO IT MAY REQUIRE SOME TWEAKING THE MORE I USE IT. I TOW AN ENCLOSED 24 FOOT CAR TRAILER AND SET THE CONTROLLER MID RANGE ON BOTH SETTINGS AS MY STARTING POINT. 293519

Comments: A) It was a challenge to find the correct wiring for the red control wire for my 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner (1996). It would sure be nice to have a pigtail adapter that worked with that model, but I understand there would be a million different types of pigtails. I have suggestions for anyone else in this predicament with a 4Runner. B) The wiring diagram for the Draw-tite I-command Brake Control suggests this is always active -- directly wired to battery. Instead of plugging unplugging the pigtail, a rocker switch would be good. What is the idle current (amperage) draw (drain on battery)? How about current draw while actively braking? This would specify the type of rocker C) There is little description of the "gain" setting (vs the "boost"). How is this value dialed in for a particular load and boost setting? switch. 391425

Comments

So far very well. The boost needs to be changed for highway vs city driving B1 vs B. Perhaps this is a function of the Casita brakes, but brakes grab & lock up if I dont reduce the boost in city driving.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. The etrailer.com website also has downloadable installation instructions provided by the parts manufacturers. 477371

Purchased this as I needed it for towing our newly acquired 26 ft. camper. With the addition of the installation adapter that matched my truck, the installation was simple. The set-up was easy and the product works flawlessly. I don't think I could have asked for more given the very affordable price. 429007

This product has worked great and the installation along with the pigtail adapter took less than 15 minutes. I have towed my trailer hundreds of miles without ever a worry about braking. Great product.

The wiring adapter.made the installation of the brake controller a simple plug n`play installarion. the video allowed me to know where to plug in the controller and where to install the fuses. The fuses are not included but we're already installed in my vehicle. Probably included in the tow package. The wiring adapter insures me that every connection is correct. Works perfectly. 563460

Wish I had bought this one years ago. After buying one,I replaced the brake controllers in all the rest of our trucks over from the time delay to proportional style. Pulling different trailers both empty and loaded this controller is very easy to get the settings right, something I can’t say for any of the timed delay controllers I’ve used. It’s worth every penny. 469070

This has been the best and easiest purchase during my short journey of outfitting my 2008 Nissan Titan SE to haul a 27 ft camper. This has been the easiest install. If you're not mechanically inclined like myself no worries at all. It takes literally 5-10 mins to locate your quick connects and attach it to the dash. Once connected it automatically does everything else for you. You receive a set of directions just make sure you read them first and save yourself some money and do the install yourself. Once the camper was connected to the truck it was automatically detected. Can't get any easier than just connect and go. I would recommend strongly on purchasing this trailer brake connector/quick connect along with using this company. The shipping was extremely fast and communication was great prior to its arrival. 344916

FAST SHIPPING!! Great products!!!, I highly recommend purchasing from etrailer!! Easy to put together and install only takes minutes!! I'm using these products to pull a 30ft travel trailer and it does a GREAT job! Hooking up the distribution bars is so fast and easy they just slide in and your done, and the brake controller automatically sees your trailer and saves your settings, so you don't have anything else to do!! 309790

This brake was very easy to install once I figured out where to mount it. A previous video I watched showed it mounted in a location that was too low (on the bottom of the panel) and hard to reach if needing to adjust while driving. I chose a location farther up but wasn't sure what was hiding behind the plastic so I chose to use the 3m Dual Lock fastener. This holds more securely than Velcro but it is still removable. I wasn't thrilled about having holes in my panel if I didn't like the location and wanted to move it so this was a great alternative. The brake seems to work well and is easy to adjust. The price from etrailer.com was great and it shipped quickly. 348822

I wish I would have bought this controller last year when I bought my first camper. We upgraded to a new truck and the old controller wouldn't work so the GREAT team and ETRAILER told me this was the controller to get. Man were they RIGHT. I love that as soon as I hook up my trailer it tells me right on the controller that it is connected and when I unhook or don't have the plug seated fully it will tell me N.C(not connected). Hands down the best controller I have ever used and at a great price. 284541

this really is the BEST trailer brake controller we have used. It is easy to tune and regulates the heavy horse trailer so smoothly that you do not feel it. However, do yourself AND the manufacturer a favor; If you have a High Performance ignition system such as CDI or have performance spark plug wires on your hot rod truck; put a 1000 uF or more 25 volt Filter Capacitor on the incoming 12 volts. If you do not, electronic interference will "scramble the microprocessor brain" in the unit. With the filter, no problem and the unit is wonderful. 450934

The whole process of adding a tow package to my vehicle seemed daunting but after watching the videos carefully and following all instructions, I was able to install the tow hitch, 7 pin, and this brake controller in only a few hours. I didn't have an existing tow package so it meant running new wires through the firewall, to the battery, and mounting the fuses. A little more than I thought I was getting into but like I said it was very easy to follow the instructions. I have used the controller to great success on our travel trailer. It gives me the control and confidence I need when hauling, especially when my family is with. 512332

Got some straps to secure our quad to trailer and a brake controller. All products came on time and worked perfectly. At first I thought the 4 Bulldog straps were way to beefy and overkill, but having used them this past weekend I have changed my mind....I felt very confident driving knowing there was no way our toy was going to come loose! And the absolute best feature is the little safety latch that prevents hook from possibly falling off trailer hook if strap were to come loose. Folks I talked to were very knowledgeable and helpful. I will definitely visit the etrailer site next time I need something. 565493
