Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional
part number: 39510

Proportional brake controller can be mounted within a 90-degree vertical range. LED monitor indicates braking action of trailer. Fine-tune power adjustment lets you set braking intensity to suit your towing needs.

Features:

  • Brake controller activates trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action
    • Automatically adjusts trailer's braking based on deceleration of tow vehicle
    • Activates immediately - no pausing like with time-delayed brake controllers
  • Multiple mounting options
    • Position within 90 degrees in the vertical plane
  • Fine-tune adjustment for braking power and aggressiveness
  • Green LED monitors a secure connection with trailer
  • LED monitor changes color to alert you to braking action of trailer
  • Built-in, slide-bar manual override
  • Plug-in, vehicle-specific brake-control adapter can be used for certain applications to reduce installation time

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with up to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies)
    • Designed for use with electric brakes only
  • Dimensions: 3" wide x 5" long x 1-1/2" tall
  • Mounting: between -20 degrees and 70 degrees in the vertical plane
  • 5-Year limited warranty

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

As long as the Voyager controller is mounted properly and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power and Sensitivity Adjustment

Getting the braking power you need for your application is simple with the Voyager. First, set up the controller as indicated in the instructions, making sure that the internal sensor is properly leveled. Then set the overall power by adjusting the power knob while you test out your rig. The power should be just enough to achieve maximum braking without locking up your trailer brakes.

Once you have the overall power set, you can fine-tune the power output by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor. Use the level knob on the side of the Voyager to achieve your desired degree of intensity. Move the knob toward you (clockwise) to delay the power output, creating braking sensitivity that is ideal for lightweight setups. If you are towing a heavy load, you may want the trailer to brake more aggressively to prevent it from pushing your tow vehicle. To get more intense stopping action, turn the level knob away from you (counterclockwise).

LED Indicator

On the front of the Voyager there is an LED indicator that is designed to keep you aware of the braking action of your trailer. Typically, this light burns green to indicate that your trailer and tow vehicle are securely connected. When the light is green, only 5 milliamps are being drawn, thus minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.

As you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, the LED will change to red. This indicates that power is being sent to the trailer brakes. The light will also burn red whenever you activate the manual override lever.

During installation and setup, this light is used to ensure that the Voyager will be able to function correctly. Proper leveling of the internal sensor is crucial to the operation of this brake controller. When the sensor is level, the LED will change to a shade of orange.

Simple Installation

The Voyager is designed to be mounted in your cab at a vertical angle that is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees.

Correct Voyager mounting90-Degree Voyager mounting

Note: The Voyager must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

Once the controller is mounted, you must level the internal sensor. First, set the overall power to maximum using the knob on the side of the controller. Then, while pressing the tow vehicle's brake pedal, adjust the level knob on the other side of the brake controller (this is the same knob that is used to fine-tune the power output) until the LED monitor is a shade of orange.

Installation requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the Voyager or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the Voyager, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

etrailer makes the purchase easy. I have always used Tekonsha Voyagers, and on my new truck (2015 Silverado) I also wanted the convenience of having the plug and play wiring harness. etrailer had exactly what I needed and was very easy to find on the website. Installation was flawless and clean thanks to the good hardware supplied. Very excited to put some trailers behind the truck with the stopping power confidence that comes with the Voyager.

Comments
Working great! The mandatory leveling process was successful and the unit functions as intended.

The Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller works well in my 99 Silverado 1500, which was easy to setup for my trailer. The option to allow for different settings of aggression for the trailer braking has allowed the stopping with different loads to be graceful with the turn of a knob. Decided to install the controller in CD storage with velcro for a nice look. Easy access when in place during use for easy observation and twicking during operation. The wife can assist with the twicking while I am driving. Excellent product!

Works as intended, but the plug on the back of the controller is a loose connection. Sometimes I would go to brake and find that I had no trailer brakes because the controller lost power. After a wiggle it would start to work again. I was able to shave the Molex plug a bit and now I don't have any problems with it.

Comments
Thank you for your review. I have not heard of that problem. I would have used some electrical tape.

Perfectly wired directly to existing wiring that I had for the previous brake controller I replaced with the, Draw Tite I Command. This will make it a lot easier should I choose to upgrade the unit in the future. Fantastic customer service from Joshua as well.

This was an easy install on my 2019 GMC truck using the appropriate wiring adapter. Instructions for setting up the control were clear. After a few adjustments my trailer brakes worked as they should. Minor adjustments of the controller are needed from time to time, but overall the controller is reliable. Good value.

I have a 12 ton backhoe pro trailer it has 4 short axles 2 on each side. It does not have dual wheels. It has 8 wheels with 8 sets of brakes so I needed a controller for 4 axles. This controller has worked well the settings are a little touchy but it works great. My truck is a 4 speed and i usually have the controller set so if I let off of the gas like coming to a stop the controller slows the whole rig without touching the brake. I like the indicator light to see what it is doing and that it is connected right

This controller is outstanding in how easy it is to setup. I upgraded to this model after I had wiring problems with a less expensive unit. etrailer staff was outstanding in their support helping me with that problem and allowing me to upgrade to this controller.

If you are starting from scratch to install a brake controller and a 7-Way connector, you would want the Brake Controller 7-and 4-Way Installation Kit (ETBC7). This kit contains all the necessary parts to connect to the 4-Way connector mentioned above, and to wire all the way to the front of the vehicle and connect to the brake controller. I already had a Tekonsha Primus brake controller from another vehicle, so all I needed for that was the Brake Control Plug-in Harness (#20127).

I was looking for a basic controller to activate the trailer brakes on my Rockwood 276HW pop up, after spending an excruciatingly stressful weekend adjusting brakes/bearings. I found it w the Voyager which, with the previously reviewed harness/connector, attached to the built in connection on my 2020 Tacoma flawlessly. A no-surprise product with the installation made easy w thorough instructions. Brakes work great. Very happy!

Bought this to replace a Tekonsha Prodigy P2. Changed the mounting bracket and it plugged right in. Easy to setup and it works. The P2 is being moved to a new truck.

Received this yesterday and was able to install it today. Instructions were very easy to follow and the only problem I had installing it was contorting myself to install the bracket. Once I got the bracket in place the rest was a piece of cake. Went for a test drive as the instructions suggested and did have to tweak it a little but it's doing exactly what I expect it to do. I'll be hauling a John Deere Tractor and wanted to make sure the brakes on the trailer worked.

My truck was stolen and wrecked. I was able to retrieve the Tekonsha Brake controller from under the Dash board before it was hauled to the salvage yard, but not the wire harness. I was ale to order a replacement harness from eTrailer and reinstall the controller in my new truck. I had no problems at all. Thank you eTrailer for the great support.

Find a good out of the way location and the install is easy with the additional pigtail. GMC has the wires included in the harness. Just a matter of connecting them

The drawtite hitch and trailer wiring harness fit great. Instructions were clear and concise. Installation was a breeze. I am ready to tow my little trailer now. As soon as I get the brake controller installed, I will be ready for my big trailer.

Works well, but the gain and accelerometer knobs aren't labeled from top or front, so one has to remember which is which, or look them up in the owner's manual before hooking up the trailer.

This is my second Tekonsha; I had to replace my 10-year old one after I accidentally broke it. This one is a bit of an upgrade, and is easily able to lock up the disc brakes on my 15,000 lb trailer. Adjusting it properly, I'm able to brake as though there were no trailer at all. Set it, and forget it. It doesn't get any easier than that.
