Preset, User Controlled Braking

The Tow-Pro Classic applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the controller. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you. The amount of braking power can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which level is best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Tow-Pro Classic sends power out in the same way each time the brakes are engaged, no matter the braking situation. This means that you have complete control over each braking event.

Having this control over your braking is particularly important when overlanding or towing a trailer off-road because you may need to alter the trailer's braking based on the specific terrain and situation that you find yourself in. If you tow through sand or mud, for example, you'll want to keep the Classic's braking power turned down low so that when you activate the brakes in your vehicle, the trailer doesn't stop with too much force and bite into the sand. In this instance, if the braking intensity is set too high, your trailer can act as an anchor on your vehicle.

If you are towing a trailer down a steep descent, you will want to have the brake power set to a higher level to ensure that the trailer's momentum doesn't cause it to push against the tow vehicle. The fact that this controller activates your trailer's brakes immediately is helpful in this situation as well. Unlike a time-delayed controller, the Classic makes sure your trailer brakes activate as soon as you apply your vehicle's brakes, which is particularly important when you're traveling down a steep hill.

Tow-Pro Classic Operation

The dash-mountable control knob on the Tow-Pro Classic makes it easy to control your trailer's brakes. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment, this knob has an LED indicator that changes color to display different information about the controller.

Redarc Tow Pro Classic User Controlled LED Signal

A solid green LED light on the control knob will signal that the unit is connected to your trailer's brakes.

This knob lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the switch clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.

Redarc Tow Pro Classic Brake LED Intensity

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, a red LED light will signal that power is being sent back to the trailer brakes. As you increase brake power with the control knob, the light will glow brighter, indicating the increased braking power.

This light will also glow at its brightest when the manual override is activated. To engage the manual override, just push down on the control knob and the trailer's brakes will activate with an intensity that matches the preset power level on the controller. Once you stop adjusting the power, or once the override is released, the LED light will fade to its normal appearance. This is designed to be easier on your eyes at night, while still presenting a visual indicator.

Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

The Tow-Pro Classic comes in 2 pieces - the main electronic unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted in an out-of-the-way location. So you no longer have to worry about a bulky brake controller scraping against your leg or causing interference with your vehicle's lower airbags.

Redarc Tow Pro Elite Classic Mounted Remote Knob

The dash-mountable control knob can be mounted in a convenient spot that is easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open area on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard.

Once you have determined where to mount the control knob, you will want to find a good place to install the main unit. The only mounting restriction for the unit is that the included 3' plug-in cable is able to reach between the main unit and the control knob.

The included connector plugs into the main unit so that, once wired, you can easily unplug and remove the unit if you need too. This connector does not come pre-wired. You will have to use 16-gauge wire (16-1-1 - sold separately) to make the connections between the connector and your vehicle.

Installation Accessories

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: A 30-amp circuit breaker kit (331-CBK30-EB - sold separately) may be required for installation.

TrailerMate Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers - Pigtail

Ease installation of your electric trailer brake controller by using this custom wiring adapter. Simply connect the 4 wires of the harness to your brake controller and then plug the other end into the built-in port behind your vehicle's dash.

Features:

  • Pigtail wiring adapter eases installation of your electric trailer brake controller
  • Connector end plugs into the built-in port behind the dash of your vehicle
  • Wire end connects to the wires on your brake controller with the included butt connectors
    • Compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from TrailerMate, Draw-Tite, and Tekonsha
  • Stranded copper wires ensure long life
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Installation of TrailerMate Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which is located behind the dashboard. To access this connector, you will need to remove the finish panel in your dash. Plug the adapter into the connector in the large gray housing behind the panel.

To hook this adapter up to your trailer brake controller, just connect the 4 wires of the harness - ground, power, brake switch, and brake power - to the corresponding wires on the brake controller. If your brake controller came with a plug built into its wiring harness, you will have to cut off the plug and connect to the wires themselves.

Video Transcript for Redarc Tow-Pro Classic Trailer Brake Controller Review

Speaker 1: Today we'll be having a look at the Redarc Towpro classic trailer brake controller, part number 331-EBRHV2. Here's where our Redarc Towpro classic looks like installed. As you'll notice, what's great about this brake controller, compared to other options on the market, is this will allow us to control our electric trailer brakes without having a big bulky brake controller mounted underneath our dash which takes up valuable leg room. Especially in vehicles that have limited space in front of the drivers seat. This is also a great solution for vehicles that have knee airbags underneath the dash because you can't mount a brake controller over the airbag. That would cause a problem if the airbag was ever to deploy. Now what sets this brake controller apart from others on the market too is that this is a completely user controlled brake controller.

It's not proportional and that makes it great for those of you who are into off roading and perhaps have an overlying camper or need to tow a trailer across rough terrain. With the proportional brake controller, when your foot is on the brake if you're going over rough terrain, the jostling of the G sensor inside of the proportional brake controller could confuse it and cause the brakes to be applied, even when you don't need them to be applied heavily. If your foot's just on the brake to control your speed and you hit a rough bump, then it could apply more pressure than what is actually needed for your trailer brakes. With a user control one, such as this, the power level only goes up to where you need it. Unlike other brake controllers, when your foot's on the brake and your vehicle's at a stop, after awhile, the brake's will shut off and won't have any more power being applied to them. With this user controlled on, you can actually have the brakes on as long as you need them and you can use that as a feature to help keep your trailer in place as you're going down a steep descent.

Slowly over rocks or on a beach for example if you are going across and, if you turn the brakes all the way down you won't have to worry about the trailer acting as an anchor and in getting your vehicle stuck. What I really like about this controller, is that it is super easy to use. To adjust the power level of our brakes, we have a know that starts off at zero and goes all the way up to 10. As you increase the power, you can see the color of the LED will change from a green to a yellow to an orange to a bright red. The brighter red it is, the more power is being applied. As you apply the brakes, they'll slowly apply power to the maximum level where you have it set. So you don't have to worry about the brakes immediately locking up and causing a jerking sensation.

This will smoothly apply the power giving you the maximum power to stop that you need. We also have a manual override where can apply just the brakes on the trailer by simply pressing in on the switch. It's the same way. It'll slowly bring up the power level to the maximum where you have it set. This is a great solution if your trailer starts to sway behind you and you need to bring it back in line or if you start to jackknife. You don't want to slow down your vehicle.

You only want to slow down the trailer. Just press the button, it will slow the trailer down, and bring it back in line behind. Now here's the product GP3 that we we're talking about earlier. This is a great brake controller. Proportional brake controller. It'll allow us to do electric brakes, electric over hydraulic brakes, as well as the Redarc does the same as that as well. Typically you want a proportional brake controller in most applications for normal use on the road. However, the Redarc is a much better suited brake controller for off road use and it still works just fine when you're on the road. You'll also notice, how much smaller it is and you can mount it virtually anywhere. That completes our look at the Redarc Towpro Classic Trailer Brake Controller, part number 331-EBRHV2.

I’ve been eyeing these Red Arc controllers up for a while. I have a new Cherokee (KL) and there is NO good place for a brake controller in this vehicle. The cabin is tight and there is a knee air bag that prevents traditional mounting under the steering wheel. I ended up mounting the control knob in the dash, next to the headlight switch and everything seems to be working well, so far. The only complaint I have is that I feel the construction of the control knob assembly and controller housing are a bit cheap compared to the cost. I mean really, it wouldn’t take much effort/cost to pot the electrical components which would result in waterproof and more durable components. Overall though, I’m pretty happy with the controller so far and would purchase again. I may pick up the pro model for my Dodge Ram as I do appreciate not having a big controller hanging off the bottom of the dash. 476794

Took me a while to finally get over the price of this brake controller and I'm glad I finally did. It was an easy install, and the control knob was mounted in a perfect spot out of the way and unobtrusive. Exactly why I bought it. I'm very pleased. I installed it myself, but if you are not familiar with wiring then letting a pro install it for you might be the way to go. I personally do not like progressive rate controllers so this is a perfect fit to go in my Jeep JK Wrangler. 500221

When my brake controller died 6 days before my family trip to Florida, George and the eTrailer team expedited my order and made sure I received the replacement in time to install it before our trip. Great service and a helpful team! Thank you.. 494025

Brake controller works well; But I had a hard time finding a location for the button under - behind my dash, ended up locating it on the right side of the steering column still tight but is working. 2010 Honda pilot. 497030
