Preset, User Controlled Braking

The Tow-Pro Classic applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the controller. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you. The amount of braking power can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which level is best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.


Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Tow-Pro Classic sends power out in the same way each time the brakes are engaged, no matter the braking situation. This means that you have complete control over each braking event.


Having this control over your braking is particularly important when overlanding or towing a trailer off-road because you may need to alter the trailer's braking based on the specific terrain and situation that you find yourself in. If you tow through sand or mud, for example, you'll want to keep the Classic's braking power turned down low so that when you activate the brakes in your vehicle, the trailer doesn't stop with too much force and bite into the sand. In this instance, if the braking intensity is set too high, your trailer can act as an anchor on your vehicle.


If you are towing a trailer down a steep descent, you will want to have the brake power set to a higher level to ensure that the trailer's momentum doesn't cause it to push against the tow vehicle. The fact that this controller activates your trailer's brakes immediately is helpful in this situation as well. Unlike a time-delayed controller, the Classic makes sure your trailer brakes activate as soon as you apply your vehicle's brakes, which is particularly important when you're traveling down a steep hill.


Tow-Pro Classic Operation

The dash-mountable control knob on the Tow-Pro Classic makes it easy to control your trailer's brakes. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment, this knob has an LED indicator that changes color to display different information about the controller.

A solid green LED light on the control knob will signal that the unit is connected to your trailer's brakes.


This knob lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the switch clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.


Redarc Tow Pro Classic Brake LED Intensity

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, a red LED light will signal that power is being sent back to the trailer brakes. As you increase brake power with the control knob, the light will glow brighter, indicating the increased braking power.


This light will also glow at its brightest when the manual override is activated. To engage the manual override, just push down on the control knob and the trailer's brakes will activate with an intensity that matches the preset power level on the controller. Once you stop adjusting the power, or once the override is released, the LED light will fade to its normal appearance. This is designed to be easier on your eyes at night, while still presenting a visual indicator.


Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

The Tow-Pro Classic comes in 2 pieces - the main electronic unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted in an out-of-the-way location. So you no longer have to worry about a bulky brake controller scraping against your leg or causing interference with your vehicle's lower airbags.

The dash-mountable control knob can be mounted in a convenient spot that is easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open area on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard.


Once you have determined where to mount the control knob, you will want to find a good place to install the main unit. The only mounting restriction for the unit is that the included 3' plug-in cable is able to reach between the main unit and the control knob.


The included connector plugs into the main unit so that, once wired, you can easily unplug and remove the unit if you need too. This connector does not come pre-wired. You will have to use 16-gauge wire (16-1-1 - sold separately) to make the connections between the connector and your vehicle.

I love the small size of brake dial. It must be very sensitive however because I am towing around 3k lbs with my Ridgeline and it’s only on 2-3. The wiring color diagram was not as my OEM harness but I figured it out. Love the small size the most and thats what I really wanted. I used a knockout on the dash and it fit in nicely with a few modifications. 651347

Update 1yr Later: after about a year I had an issue with my Classic being sticky when using the manually override - May have been my fault! Talked with Mark at Redarc and he was a pleasure to work with. He upgraded me to the Pro and install was a breeze. BTW Im using the same controller that came with the Classic - states it would work the same. Took me truly 10min to change over. He also sent me a new knock out for my 18 Ridgeline.

Great product, had it in the truck for almost a year now. Plug and play, with no splicing into the Tundra harness. As shown in photo, a bit of careful drilling and dremelling, I used one of the blank switch locations to locate the controller knob and be able to show the indicator light. 771021

Installed in 2019 F-150. Not a whole lot of options on where to mount the remote switch on the dash. Mounted a plated of aluminum in the space where the factory control would be. The factory wiring was behind the dash in the back of the dummy cubby hole. The plug-and-play harness plugged directly into the Ford harness, then just had to clip off the black end and push the wires into the new connector supplied with the control module. The control module fit perfectly under the steering column, horizontally on a steel support plate. The next day, towed the trailer with two RZR's from WI to KS and back. Every thing worked perfectly. 792615

I’ve been eyeing these Red Arc controllers up for a while. I have a new Cherokee (KL) and there is NO good place for a brake controller in this vehicle. The cabin is tight and there is a knee air bag that prevents traditional mounting under the steering wheel. I ended up mounting the control knob in the dash, next to the headlight switch and everything seems to be working well, so far. The only complaint I have is that I feel the construction of the control knob assembly and controller housing are a bit cheap compared to the cost. I mean really, it wouldn’t take much effort/cost to pot the electrical components which would result in waterproof and more durable components. Overall though, I’m pretty happy with the controller so far and would purchase again. I may pick up the pro model for my Dodge Ram as I do appreciate not having a big controller hanging off the bottom of the dash. 476794

Took me a while to finally get over the price of this brake controller and I'm glad I finally did. It was an easy install, and the control knob was mounted in a perfect spot out of the way and unobtrusive. Exactly why I bought it. I'm very pleased. I installed it myself, but if you are not familiar with wiring then letting a pro install it for you might be the way to go. I personally do not like progressive rate controllers so this is a perfect fit to go in my Jeep JK Wrangler. 500221

My Tacoma came with tow package but manufacturer doesn’t have an electric brake controller. I didn’t like the look of the after market ones until I checked etrailer. They carry The Redarc that tucks the controller under the dash with a nice looking, back lit , dial that fits in the dash with a factory finished look. Install was plug and play.
