When replacing gas shock on your vehicle or RV, you will want to make sure you are buying a replacement with the exact same extended length, compressed length, and pounds of force. This information is usually printed on the shock. Lengths are measured from the center of the ball joint used for mounting. If you are planning on installing gas shocks on something for the first time, identifying the shock you need requires fairly complex initial calculations, so be sure to do your research to avoid purchasing a shock that will not fit your application.

Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen, here at etrailer.com. And we're going to be taking a quick look at the gas strut. This is a great way to replace a gas strut that's become damaged or bent or broken on your hatch door, on your boat or your RV really anywhere that you need this. So it has a 60 pound weight rating. Let's take a closer look at it and make sure that it's going to be the right fit for you overall.
It does fit onto a ball socket joint. So we'll have the same attachment point on the other side. And typically you can rotate either end to get that dialed in where you need it to be. It is going to be threaded on both ends, so you can make that minor adjustment once you get it in place.Again, this is rated for a force of 60 pounds. You don't want to try to compress it by hand though.
It's not really meant for that. And then the distance between the mounting points, center to center when it's expanded, is 10 inches. When it is compressed, it goes down to 6.41, so just under six and a half inches. It's a black nitride design. There's a little bit of lubricant in either of those mounting spots, so it should keep those freely moving as that hatch door opens and closes.
But it should be a nice way to replace that shock, so that you don't have to worry about the door coming and hitting you on the head or coming closed on you. So you can do any kind of maintenance, get anything loaded into that area or wherever you have this mounted up. Overall, I was satisfied with the process as well as as quality and condition of the door opener. I was fortunate that the opener fit correctly. There was some dissatisfaction that your web site offered little in the way of cross-reference data for a direct replacement with the existing opener on my trailer. Also, considering that the item was in stock, delivery took longer than I had anticipated.

It didn't fit the camper door swivel pin properly. Head of hinge too big so door wouldn't shut. Went back to Lakota Horse trailer and ordered the part. I don't believe you had stock that would have worked. Thanks for asking.

Didn't work, until I realized the post couplings would screw off the OEM and screw on this new unit. Door wouldn't shut until I changed out this hardware. Now it is perfect! The couplings that come with the unit were too large for my door. All good now, perfect fit. 2020 Thor Citation 24ST.

The selection process was easy to follow. I needed gas struts with a greater lift capacity for our under bed storage due to the addition of a memory foam mattress. I was able to select a strut pair with the proper length and extension from the website. The struts were received quickly and were exactly what I needed. The bed now raises gently and remains elevated.

This fit my 05 Bigfoot 9.6 camper door with about 3/8 compression left. This is the shock you want. It has a slow open feature and does not slam the door open possibly risking tearing the mounts off. So no worries about people who just open the door and head out. We used to have to coax the door open. Not you can let go of it. Love this shock!!

The product you sent does not comply with the listed specifications; that is, the extended length is 18.5", not 18", and the compressed length is not 11.5"; rather, the length is 12". Bottom line: when installed my door will not close.

I am sorry that this is not working for you. I have gotten in contact with our dimensions team and they have confirmed that the dimensions are supposed to be measuring center on center of the mounting points, the expanded length is 18 inches and the compressed length is 11.5 inches. If you were to measure this not from center to center, the overall length not from center on center was 19 inches and the compressed was 12.5 inches. We are currently working on getting a diagram of the exact measurements on the website for future customer convenience.

The Stabilus shock holding the 22" door of our bumper pull trailer open was weak. Mild wind would push it shut. This shock fit right onto the existing ball joints. A small blade screwdriver pried the "c" clip back, allowing me to slip the socket over the ball, and the clip snapped into place. Maybe 30 seconds and the shock was installed.
The biggest challenge was determining what force I needed in the replacement. The existing shock had the model information scraped away where it rubbed on the door threshold. No where could I find on the etrailer site what force a small door shock should be. I ended up chatting with an RV service tech I know, who looked it up in his parts catalog. Turns out 10 lb force is standard except for large RV doors. I would suggest etrailer.com add this information on their online catalog. Maybe it's there and I couldn’t' find it? "Gas shock force needed for RV doors."

I don't know that the item is excellent. The gas shock has a simple job and I assume that it will do it. (haven't installed it yet) I've been very happy with etrailer in the past, and I assume that will continue. So, the item itself gets 3 stars (average). etrailer gets 5 stars (excellent). :-)
