Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Today in our 2013 Chevrolet Equinox we'll be having a look at and installing the Tekonsha T1 Vehicle wiring harness with a four pull flat trailer connector, part number 118494. Here's what our wiring looks like installed. As you can see, we can easily secure it up to our hitch safety chain loop here using the built on dust cover. This dust cover will help protect our wiring when it's not in use so we don't have to worry about any dirt, debris or moisture getting inside causing contamination or a short later down the road. Now this wiring harness has an adequate length wire on it. We actually have it zip tied up underneath our fascia right now. This wiring harness will give us our necessary functions as required by law in order to safely tow a trailer; for all of our tail lights, our running lights, our turn signals, and our brake lights. Now one nice thing about this wiring harness compared to others on the market is that it has a powered module, which will help isolate our vehicle's lighting system circuitry from our trailer so in case our trailer has short we don't have to worry about any damage occurring to our vehicle's expensive electrical components.

This module's powered by hooking up to a fuse system to our vehicle's battery or fuse box itself. Now that we've gone over some features of our wiring harness, we'll show you how to get it installed. All right to being our installation with our rear hatch open, we'll come on over to our tail light assemblies where we'll find two plastic covers that we need to remove. These plastic covers have a notch on the bottom of them. You can use a flat head screwdriver or trim panel tool and pop them open. Behind those covers we'll find two 10 millimeter bolts that also have a Phillips-head in them. We'll just use a 10 millimeter socket and remove them.

Now we can grab our taillight assembly and pull it towards the back of the vehicle, find out electrical connector right here, push in on the tab, separate it. Repeat the same process on the other side. All right now we'll drop down our connector here that has a green wire attached as well as our four pole flat behind our tail light area on our driver's side. Now we'll take our red wire that comes off our module. Let's strip off a little bit more insulation. We'll take one of the yellow butt connectors that comes in our kit, stick it over the wire, and crimp it down.

Take one end of our black wire, strip off some insulation, stick it in the other end of the butt connector and crimp that down as well. All right now we'll take some electrical tape and wrap up this butt connector here just to help provide a weather tight connection and prevent any dirt, debris or moisture from entering causing corrosion or a short and be surely to do this at all other electrical connections from here on out. Now we'll take our connector that has the yellow wire. I'll plug the male end into the female end of the vehicle, make sure it clicks into place, pull back and make sure it's secure. Then we'll drop down our converter box here, making sure our ground wire goes with it and we'll feed our black wire down all the way as well. Okay, now we'll plug the other end of our T connector into our driver's side tail light. Now we'll reinstall our tail light assembly. We'll make sure our alignment pins on the bottom and the top go into the corresponding holes.

We'll push it back in place and re secure our two screws. All right now we'll take a pull wire, we'll drop it down behind our passenger's side tail light so it comes out the bottom behind our bumper. All right now we'll take an alcohol wipe and wipe down a section of our inside of our bumper here. That way our box has a clean surface to stick to. Now we'll take our double sided tape here, peel off the back of it, place it onto the back side of our box, press it down nice and firm, peel off the other side, and place it where we cleaned off on the bumper. Okay with that securely mounted, we can now take our ground wire, use the provided self tapping screw and secure to the vehicle sheet metal using a quarter inch nut driver on the self tapping screw. All right. That'll give us a nice solid ground point. We went ahead and routed our four pole flat wiring behind our fascia tab here, over our hitch, and secured it to our safety chain loops here with the dust cover. The excess, we bundled up with a couple zip ties to the tab for the fascia. Our green wire that goes over to the T connector on our passenger side, we went behind our tab here, over our hitch, behind the other tab, over to the side of our bumper and we're gonna connect it to our pull wire that we dropped down with some electrical tape. With that taped together we'll now pull it up behind our tail light. Now we'll plug it in and reconnect our tail light. All right we went ahead and routed our power wire to the front, making sure we avoided any moving parts such as the steering or suspension, or sources of heat such as the exhaust. Have it secured to this wiring harness here. Kept it high away from the exhaust, went above the rear suspension and sub-frame, have it secured to this brace here with a zip tie. Come back on over, went down alongside the gas tank, and secured it to the brackets that hold our brake and fuel lines in place. One there, there, there, there, there, and there. This is right at the end of our firewall, so there's six brackets in total that we tied it to. We have our pull wires that we used previously, dropped down from the engine bay and the end of our wire taped to it. Now I'll pull our wire into our engine compartment. Make sure we get all the slack out of it so we don't have anything dragging underneath the vehicle. Now we can hook our wire up to power source. We can either go directly to the positive terminal on our battery or come over to a wire off of our fuse box, which is what we're gonna do. The reason we're doing that is because our battery is actually underneath the engine computer and we don't want to risk damaging that. So if we connect our wire right here to this stud, this will go directly to our batter giving us a good connection. Okay now we have an excess amount of black wire so we're just gonna cut off the excess right here. We'll strip off some of the insulation. We'll attach our butt connector. Take our fuse holder now. Has one loop of wire. We'll just cut it right in the middle so we have two separate ends. Now we'll strip out the insulation from both ends. On one end we'll place a ring terminal and the other end will go to our butt connector. Now we'll use an 8 millimeter socket and remove this nut. I'll take our ring terminal, place it on over, and replace the nut and tighten it back down. Now on our fuse box here we'll cut a small notch right in this area for our wire to pass through. Okay, as you can see at the notch we have plenty of room for our wire to pass through now. Take our fuse, plug it into our fuse holder, and close up our dust cover. All right, now that our installation is done we're gonna test our wiring using a four pole flat tester, part number 26 on our website if you'd like to purchase one. Start by turning on our headlights and as you can see our tail light function and running light function on our trailer will work. Left turn signal now, okay that's working. Now right turn signal, and that's working as well. Now we'll step on our brakes to make sure our brake lights on our trailer will work. As you can see, those are working too. Now that we've verified our lights are working, we can hook up to our trailer and get on the road. That completes the look at and installation of the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector Part number 118494 on our 2013 Chevrolet Equinox.

This was a replacement for a harness that I failed to protect with dielectric grease. The connector on the original harness was exposed to road salt and water, so it corroded. My fault. etrailer rep told me about using the protective grease. The new harness was a perfect replacement and went in easily. Back on road again and quickly, too. 652725

The wiring kit (118494) went together flawlessly, everything hooked up perfectly. I also installed a draw-tite hitch (76028) which also went in flawlessly. This should work great to pull my enclosed trailer and to hook my bicycle rack to. Thanks for a great product. 403678

Fast accurate shipping. This is my 3rd hitch from etrailer. The first 2 were excellent and easy installs but I must say this one was a challenge. The box was delivered pretty beat up. (Not e trailers fault) I came to find the left side mounting bracket bent about 2 and a 1/4 inched so I had to repair the bent area to make it fit properly. I would have sent it back but I'm hauling gear tomorrow at 8am. That aside you always provide a great product. 728390

A short circuit in the trailer wiring is what typically causes the converter boxes to fail. Carefully examine the wiring on the trailer, beginning at the trailer connector, and trace each circuit back to its lamp. Look for loose or pinched wires, or wires with cracked or worn insulation. Anything that would allow the copper conductor on the interior of the wire to contact the trailer frame would cause a short circuit which would damage the converter. Once the short is located and repaired, you should be good going forward after replacing the converter.

Installed on 2010 Chevy Equinox that did not have factory tow package. Spent a little extra on flexible tubing and ran power wire inside tubing from converter to battery. Followed the brake lines from from to rear. Instead of mounting power converter under the vehicle as shown in video and instructions, I mounted the converter in the left side tail light bay. The wire harness to the right side tail light was now too short so spliced in a length of wire and was able to run the right side harness inside the square tubing that the rear bumper attaches to. Also ran the right side harness in flex tubing. For the price, they should add a few feet to the right side harness. Other than that, install was easy. 641198

This is an excellent product and has all the required parts for installation. I would recommend quite a few more nylon wire ties, but most of us have lots of them anyway. Just to mention that, if you get the wires in the wrong position when fishing them through the "boxed" part of the body, they can get severely stuck. I found the same issue when fishing the bolts through that same place for the hitch. This is on my 2016 GMC Terrain. There is a bolt and a metal "tab" that could make fishing a real nightmare. The video instructions are great, but not the printed version included in the kit. 410156

Got this in short order and in good shape. It's a long and tedious process to get this installed. Not because of the kit but because of the process. Removing both tail lights wasn't too bad. But getting the power wire from the rear to the engine bay is a pain. You have to be careful if you want a decent looking job. If I did another one I would use split corragated flex conduit all the way from the back to the battery. Can't really say anything bad about etrailer or this kit. 407967

I replaced a similar wiring harness because the module had failed. New harness is working great. Installation on an Equinox a bit tricky but doable. As pointed out by other reviewers, wiring length could be a bit longer to help with installation. Suggest buying a tester so do not find out when renting a trailer there is a problem. 286755

Overall this is an OK wiring harness. I bought this for my 2014 Chevy Equinox and to put it bluntly it didn't fit. The control unit on the left side worked fine but to get the right side green wires to connect to the passenger side blinker the wire simply wasn't long enough, fortunately I was able to solder an 12" extension into the wire however I feel I really shouldn't have to do that. I was routing it according to the instructional video provided on etrailer.com. Secondly, I find it a little weird that this unit requires a battery feed at all, it's really just acting as a relay, I have used other harnesses before that didn't require a hot power source...seemed weird and unnecessary for a 4 pole wiring harness that is just doing flashers and brakes lights... If you can't find anything else get this 228705

It states that the 2.4L L4 Engine model Terrain has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds for trailers with brakes and 1,000 pounds for trailers without brakes. I do recommend verifying this in your copy of the owner's manual, as its possible that you have a slightly different model. If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed on the vehicle, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame # 76028. This custom-fit,...

  • Parts Needed to Install 7-Way Connector and Trailer Brake Controller on 2015 GMC Terrain
  • For your 2015 GMC Terrain that does not have the factory tow package, you will need to start by installing a 4-Way connector. For this I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118494. This harness is custom-fit for your vehicle and will install by connecting directly to the built-in ports located behind the driver and passenger side interior trim panels in the rear cargo area. You will then run the hot lead up to the vehicle's battery. I have attached the written installation...

For your wiring harness, there are two options. If you do not have the factory tow package, then you will need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118494. The wiring harness is designed to plug into the existing wiring of the vehicle without cutting or splicing the original vehicle wiring. If you do have the factory tow package...

If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount...

  • The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, # 56094, will fit your 2011 Chevy Equinox and will work to operate the trailer stop, turn, and tail lights. But, it does not have a circuit protected or powered converter to protect your vehicle wiring. If given the option, I will always recommend the circuit protected powered converter, # 118494, because it is designed to protect your vehicles sensitive wiring. What it does is virtually eliminate the extra power...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Chevy Equinox
  • The best hitch for towing with a 2015 Chevy Equinox is the Draw Tite part # 76028 because it is priced the best and has the highest towing capacities. The hitch is rated for towing up to 4,500 lbs but you need to check the owners manual to determine if the vehicle has a lower capacity than that. You will need to go by the lowest rated component as the overall capacity. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2017 GMC Terrain
  • For a hitch for your 2017 GMC Terrain I would recommend the Draw Tite part # 76028 which is a confirmed fit, with great towing capacities, and because it has the best price. For trailer wiring the Curt harness part # 56094 that you referenced is a confirmed fit, but I would rather see you use the Tekonsha part # 118494 as it has circuit protection built into it that the Curt does not. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes...

  • Can Fascia Door of 2011 GMC Terrain Be Reinstalled Once Hitch is Installed
  • All of the Class III receivers available for your 2012 Terrain are similar in the way they would sit in relation to the rear bumper of the vehicle. The primary difference between the Curt # 13591 and the Draw-Tite # 76028 is that the Draw-Tite model uses two additional connection points into the bottom of the frame member. Although both hitches share the same weight rating, having extra connection points to the vehicle frame is desirable. I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III receiver,...

You'll need the brake controller, like the # 5504 you were looking at, or a proportional controller like the Primus # TK90160. It will then send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer...

  • Installation Requirements for 2011 Chevrolet Equinox Trailer Hitch and Wiring
  • The wiring for the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, part # 118494, is a custom fit and there should be no need to reprogram the vehicle computer. Reprogramming would also not be necessary after the trailer hitch installation. The wiring harness simply plugs in behind both tail lights, and because the wiring draws its power from the vehicle battery, the vehicle circuits are protected from back feed or overload. In the event of an overload, the black converter box actually turns itself off to...

If the trailer you select does not have brakes then you need only a 4-pole wiring harness for the lights on the trailer.
