Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the rear bumper, along the driver's-side frame rail.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

Today on our 2006 Chevrolet Colorado, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55510. Now here's what our kit's going to consist of, we're going to have a T-Connector and it's going to plug into the factory harness. And this converter box, that's going to convert your signal of your vehicle to a two-wire system, as most trailers are wired. We're also going to have some two-sided tape to attach this. Our self-tapping screw to attach the ground. And we'll have this weather-tight cap that's going to protect our wiring when it's not in use. We'll start under our truck here on the driver's side, there's going to be this plug right here, that's the one we're going to use.

I'm going to go ahead and pop it off the frame, and we're going to squeeze in on this little tab here, and we'll separate our wiring. And into that wiring we're going to attach this T-Connector, so it's going to jump in between them, so we can get our signal through our converter box. Now before we put that into place, we're going to put a little dielectric grease in there. We'll put a little on this side here. It's going to help protect our connections. We're going to snap it in.

Listen for the click, just give it a little bit of a tug. We'll put some on the other side, on the vehicle as well. This is going to help keep corrosion out of our connection. Line up our connector, pull it down and then we can go ahead and reattach our clip here. We'll have our converter box that we're going to need to mount to a nice, flat surface, so we're going to go ahead and mount it right here to the inside of our hitch. But first we're going to clean off this area, make sure we have no oil and grease on there.

Then we'll take our two-sided tape, we're going to apply it the back side of our box. We'll peel off the tape, and we're going to attach it up here to the inside of our hitch. Now we're going to need to attach it into the frame rail here. We're going to take our supplied self-tapping screw, and we're going to go into a good part of the frame here. That'll give us a nice good ground to tie it into the frame rail. Now we'll take a couple of these zip ties and we're going to tie up the excess wiring so it doesn't dangle down. We can put a couple zip ties around our tube here just to secure our wiring.

Now I went ahead and picked up a couple extra long zip ties to go around this tubing because it's a little bit larger diameter than the ties that came with it. Make our boot here, weather-tight boot, I'll place it through here. This will give it a nice storage place. Now we're going to go ahead and test our system. We'll be using the Curt 4-pole flat trailer tester, Part number I26 available on our website. We'll start with our tail light circuit, followed by our left turn signal, and our right. Now when I apply the brakes you're going to see two red lights come on. Perfect, everything works. Now we're ready to hit the road. And that's going to do it for look at and install of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55510, on our 2006 Chevrolet Colorado.

Install was a breeze, worked flawlessly during the first tow. Appears to be a high quality product with good fit and finish. What more can I say... It is exactly what I needed and expected. I used a bit of extra wire loom I had laying around to add extra protection to the wires going to the plug, but beyond that everything was right there in the package thats needed to get up and running. 128933

No problems so far with a years use. Again can not stress how simple the install was. Hard to go wrong with their products.

Plug and play on my 2010 Canyon. Dropped the spare tire, opened tail light connector, plugged it in. Made a stud to ground to (clean, good grounds are very important). I found a perfect recess to “tuck” the module into. Add a wire tie, wal-la, trailer light harness. 692004

Got this to replace one that had been on my truck 5 Years which had seen too many bad driveway dips. Arrived quickly, simple to install, works as it is supposed to, Reasonably priced. What more is there to want? I'd include a picture, but after it was installed, it is out of sight ! 661336

(The Good) The wiring harness is easy to install. (The Bad) The converter does not work properly on the trailer lights. Brake & four way flasher lights work properly. However parking lights don't come on. Also when the left or right turn signal is put on both of the trailer lights flash. Truck is a 2005 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Z71 without the 7-way connector 660403

Comments

For the parking lights, the first step would be to find if the problem is in the vehicle wiring or in the trailer wiring itself. Use a circuit tester on the pin of the trailer connector fed by the brown wire while the vehicles headlights are on. If the pin shows power, the wiring harness and converter is fine. If it does not show power, and the connections are fully seated in place, then the wiring harness is faulty and should be replaced. The issue with both turn signals firing at the same time is a classic manifestation of a ground problem. Make sure the trailers main ground connection on the trailer tongue is securely fastened and not loose or corroded. Make sure each trailer lamp is securely grounded to the trailer frame, and that each connection is not corroded. Ive linked you to a help article about troubleshooting trailer wiring, I hope youll find it helpful.

I recently moved to the Big Island of Hawaii where obtaining parts for vehicles has been very difficult. I have shy-ed away from utilizing the car dealers because their mark up on products are outrageous and turned to online shopping. I purchased a trailer and needed to replace the wiring harness on my truck in order to get my trailer street legal. I found the harness I needed on etrailer.com. The cost was very reasonable and they didn't charge me an arm and leg for shipping. Honestly I could have purchased two harness for the price the car dealership quoted me at. Normally when I purchase items online I receive it in 7 to 10 days. So when I got my box in THREE DAYS I was elated! I had no issues replacing the bad harness. All the electrical to the trailer WORKED! I wasted no time getting my trailer's safety inspection and registered so I can use it. Thank you ETRAILER! 566297

The wiring was correct for the truck plugins but the 4-way flat connector doesn't fit in the housing on the tailgate so it just blows in the breeze. When calling customer service through Curt they want you to buy a bracket they make. This is the third harness I've used on this truck and all of the others fit perfectly in the tailgate housing. Wouldn't buy again for a perfect OEM fit. 139259

  • The 4-pole wiring harness kit you referenced, Curt # C55510, is not a fit for your 2001 Ford Ranger but we do have similar wiring kits that will work fine for you. You can see all wiring harness products for your Ranger on the page I linked for you. If the truck does not have the tow package you can add a 4-pole harness # 118344 which simply plugs in at your tail lights. A lot of assemblies ground through the mounting hardware so check that they are attached to a clean metal surface as well. The next most likely problem is corrosion in the trailer connector(s). Check both the connector on your tow vehicle and the connector on your trailer for corrosion and clean as necessary. You can use a circuit tester like part...

  • Troubleshooting Curt 55510 Trailer Wiring Harness with Low Voltage
  • Your problem could be the converter box. Test the wires on the harness before the box and see if you get the same voltage. If you do then the box isn't the issue and it's somewhere in the wiring before that. In this case you'll need to keep tracing the wires towards the front of the truck to find the problem. If the voltage on the # C55510 harness before the converter box is normal and still low at the connector then the converter is bad.
