Thule Roof Basket Review - 2017 Kia Soul

Today on our 2017 Kia Soul, we're going to test fitting the Thule Canyon XT roof cargo basket, part number TH859XT. The Thule Canyon XT is great for carrying your camping gear, your luggage, sporting goods equipment, anything you want to keep out from the inside, or to free up more space on the inside. It measures 49 inches long, by 40 inches wide, and by six inches tall at the highest point. It comes with the farring 00:00:24 unit already installed, and that coupled with the aerodynamic design of the cargo basket itself, you're going to cut down on wind noise and drag while you're driving. With the placement of the rack, you're not going to have to remove the antennae at all. Plus, it's not going to interfere at all with your rear hatch, as there's plenty of clearance between the two. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go ahead and show you it installs. We already have three of our U-bolts installed around the rack, let's go ahead and show you this last one here, on the passenger side.

Curt Roof Basket Review - 2017 Kia Soul

Today on our 2017 Kia Soul we're gonna be test fitting the Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket, part number C18115. The Curt Cargo Basket is great for carrying your luggage, your sporting goods equipment, or your camping gear and keeping it out of your vehicle. It measures 41 1/2 inches long by 37 inches wide by 4 inches high and has a carrying capacity of 150 pounds although always double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure it can withstand that weight on the roof. At the rear here we're not gonna have any issues of clearance between our hatch and the cargo basket itself. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the cargo basket, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. Now we have three of the legs already installed onto it, and at the back here we'll go ahead and show this one. Now at the top portion of our connection, just line it up and push it up into place like so.

Surco Products Hitch Cargo Carrier Review - 2017 Kia Soul

Today on our 2017 Kia Soul we're going to be test fitting the 20 by 48 Surco cargo carrier for 1-1/4" hitches, part number 52017. Now this has a 300 pound carrying capacity. It also has this mesh floor here in the bottom which makes it easy to clean. We have this railing all the way around the cargo carrier, which can be used for your tie down straps or your bungee cords. I'm going to go ahead and give you a couple quick measurements now. Measuring from the edge of the bumper to our outer point here, we've added about 23-1/2" to the rear of the vehicle. The ground clearance is going to be about 10".

Surco Products Hitch Cargo Carrier Review - 2016 Kia Soul

Today on this 2016 Kia Soul, we're going to be test fitting the 20 x 48 Surco Cargo Carrier, part number 52017. This has a carrying capacity of 300 pounds and has a nice mesh floor, which makes it easy to clean. It also has this rail all the way around the cargo carrier, and you can use that as a tie-down point for either your ratchet straps or your bungee cords. I'm going to go ahead and give you some measurements now. Staring from the edge of the bumper to our outer edge here, we've added about 23-1/2 inches to the rear of the vehicle. The ground clearance to this edge here is going to be about 9-1/2 inches, and our closest point to this edge here is going to be about 2 inches. Then, from the center of the hitch pinhole to our edge here is going to be about 6 inches, so if you have different hitches for this vehicle, from the center of the hitch pinhole out, that's how far it's going to stick out. Also, the exhaust on this vehicle is going to be on the passenger side, but it does face down and is about 11-1/2 inches to our cargo carrier itself, so just keep it in mind maybe put some more of your heat-sensitive materials over to the driver side. Now, with it in this position, we do have full access to our rear hatch to get whatever we need. However, I'm going to go ahead and give you a break-over point measurement, and that's going to be the point where whatever it is you're hauling will come into contact with your rear hatch.

All the way around the border of the cargo carrier are these points which you can use as tie-downs for either your ratchet straps or your bungee cords. I'm going to go ahead and give you some measurements now. Starting from the edge of the bumper out to our outer edge here, we've added about 25" to the rear of the vehicle. Our ground clearance is going to be about 13".

We will now go ahead and give you a few measurements.

Kia Soul Cargo Carriers Questions

  • Since your 2016 Kia Soul only has Class I trailer hitch receivers available for it you will need to go with a Class I cargo carrier. The only Class I cargo carrier that we currently carry with a rise is the 20x48 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110 this carrier is rated for 300 lbs and has a shank rise of 3-3/4 inches. Please note that you will want to check the Tongue Weight capacity of your currently installed hitch as well as the Tongue Weight capacity of your Soul as well. Your weight...

  • You can take a couple of measurements to make sure the C# C18115 will work with the crossbars on your 2016 Soul. First make sure the crossbars are no bigger than 3-inches wide and 1-5/8 inches tall. Then measure the center to center distance of the crossbars. The # C18115 will work with your crossbars if they are spaced 15, 22, or 29 inches apart.

  • The Rightline Gear Sport 1 Rooftop Cargo Bag - Waterproof - 12 cu ft - 38" x 34" x 19" # RL100S10 is not a vehicle specific fit. The clips are also not vehicle specific so they may or may not fit your door frames or inner molding. If that is the case, you can run the included straps inside your vehicle, along the headliner, and then outside over the cargo carrier. Your car doors will close easily over the straps. No ratchet straps are needed. The roof capacity is only stated...

  • The Rhino-Rack Roof Mounted Steel Cargo Basket, # RMCB, will most likely fit the factory roof rack of your 2016 Kia Soul but you will need to measure the crossbars first. This basket will mount on crossbars having a 21 to 30 inch spread (distance between them on center) and measure up to 3-1/2 inches wide and 1-1/2 inches tall.

  • The Rightline Gear Sport 1 Rooftop Cargo Bag - Waterproof - 12 cu ft - 38" x 34" x 19" # RL100S10 doesn't have a specific speed limit based on the method you choose to install it. As long as you secure it properly inside your vehicle it's not going to slip back. Basically you would be fine as long as you don't exceed the posted speed limits. The strap would hang down from the head liner though as it will basically go from the top of one window opening to the other. You'd have...

  • I checked with Thule and all of their cargo boxes are listed as a fit for the factory crossbars of your 2015 Kia Soul. The Thule Pulse Medium part # TH614 would be a great option confirmed to fit. This box has 14 cubic feet of storage space. I attached a review video for more info for you to check out. I also attached a link to a page that has all of the Thule cargo boxes we carry for you to check out as well.

  • For your 2015 Kia Soul with a square bar Thule roof rack part numbers # THLB50, # TH480, and # THKIT1524 the Rola roof basket part # 59504 would be perfect for you. The crossbar spread of your roof rack is 30 inches which is one of the spread dimensions that the part # 59504 is designed to fit. This is a great somewhat inexpensive basket option that would work well for you.

  • Since you have a small trail bike that only weighs 112 lbs, you will be able to use a cargo carrier with your hitch and stay within the tongue weight capacity rating of a Class I trailer hitch for a 2014 Kia Soul. This is my recommendation because there is not a motorcyle carrier for Class I trailer hitches due to their tongue capacity rating. I have a similar trail bike to your Coleman ct200u and suggest using the 20x48 Surco Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" Hitches - Steel - 300...

  • Yes, you can use the Curt trailer hitch mount cargo carrier, # C18145, on any 1-1/4 inch or 2 inch trailer hitch including a Draw-Tite brand hitch. To make sure the carrier clears the back of your vehicle you will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to clear the rear bumper. If that distance is less than 6 inches then it will clear the vehicle. I have linked a video review of the carrier for you.

  • Yes, in order to secure the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18110 to the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24915 that you have installed on your 2014 Kia Soul, you are going to want to use the Trailer Hitch Anti-Rattle Kit part # F-315. This kit comes with the correct threaded hitch pin you need in addition to a block plate that will help with rattle. You do not have to use the block plate but this is the only option we have for you at this time. I have attached...

  • The rooftop cargo box you referenced, SpotRack SkyLine XL Cargo Box # SR7095, will fit many types of roof crossbars that are up to 4-inches wide. It requires that the centers of the two crossbars be 21-1/2-inches apart. If your Soul's roof crossbars can be positioned this distance apart and if they are no wider than 4-inches then the box will mount properly. Do please note that this is a large-capacity cargo box and so its size may mean that the rear hatch on your Soul might...

  • Fitting to a roof has more to do with the crossbar setup than the structure of the roof. For a 2014 Kia Soul, you'll first need a compatible crossbar kit to fit the Rhino Rack Basket, part # RMCB to the roof. I recommend the Thule Aeroblade Traverse kit, consisting of: Thule AeroBlades, 53 inches, Silver, part # THARB53 or Black, part # THARB53B Thule Rapid Traverse Foot Pack, part # TH480R Thule Fit Kit for Traverse Foot Packs, part # THKIT1820 You can add locks...

  • Apart from how the rooftop bags mount there is little difference between the cargo bags that go on the naked roof of your 2013 Kia Soul or one that attaches to a roof rack. To avoid having to put a pricey roof rack on your Soul, I strongly recommend going with a bag that mounts to your naked roof such as the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S20. This bag is waterproof, has 15 cubic feet of storage and is 44" long x 36" wide x 19" tall. You can mount the Rightline...

  • We can offer several different options for cargo transport on your daughter's 2013 Kia Soul. The best option will depend on how the vehicle is equipped. For instance does it have a hitch or a roof rack already installed? The cargo carrier you referenced, part # M2205 from CarPod, is a hitch-mount type carrier that will fit only a 2-inch hitch. The Soul cannot be equipped with a 2-inch hitch, only with a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch such as one of those shown on the link...

  • As long as your crossbars are less than 3 inches wide and 1-5/8 inches tall and can be spaced 15", 22", or 29" apart on center the Curt cargo carrier part # C18115 will fit them. There isn't a way to attach a kayak carrier to the top of this basket though. The Yakima Loadwarrior like part # Y07070 has crossbars on top of it which you could attach a kayak carrier as long as the carrier can attach to round crossbars.

  • The best way to tell how much clearance you will have for access to your rear cargo area is to take a couple measurements. I have attached a photo of the Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18145 installed on the back of a vehicle. As the photo shows, the distance from the center of the hitch pin to the closest edge of the carrier is 6 inches. Since the height of the outside walls of the carrier are 6 inches, you can hold a straight edge vertically about 6 inches back from the hitch...

  • Rola doesn't test on specific vehicles to see if the # 59504 basket clears any roof mounted equipment like antennas. Generally speaking, the roof mounted antennas are typically angled rearward, which coupled with the fact that the bottom of the basket would sit about a 1/2 inch above the top of your crossbars would usually prevent the antenna from getting in the way of a basket or roof cargo box. Since the basket is a total of 52 inches long, my best advice for you would be...

  • We offer both weather-resistant and weather-proof rooftop cargo bags. The weather-proof type offers superior protection for your enclosed cargo. Since the difference in cost is small, I do recommend the weather-proof variety as it will help protect your property from water damage but also from road dust and dirt. If you do not consider that you need this protection the Rightline # RL100A20 is an excellent cost-effective choice. These bags will mount to any type of vehicle...
