There is a trick to disengaging the brake.
You would remove power from the motor. Then you will squeeze the two prongs within the rubber handle. You will either press down on the handle and turn, or you will squeeze handle, pull up and turn to disengage the brake. You would then be able to move slide in manually by hand.

Are you having a problem with your relay/switch blowing when installing a new switch? This is a common issue with the switches like the part # LC117461 and the problem is not the amperage rating and is actually the pin out of the relay as some switches use the same design but a different pin out and if you use the wrong pin out the switch fries.
