Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-410 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter Duo-Servo left hand hydraulic drum brake assembly for 9,000 pound axles. This is a 12 1/4 inch by three and 3/8 inch driver side hydraulic trailer brake assembly. Features a dual plunger design. The dual plunger design will deliver the same amount of braking when driving either forward or in reverse. This is a hydraulic drum brake assembly. It's designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators.

This does have the forward self-adjusting brake system. Basically this cable right here that attaches down to this lever so it will self-adjust as you use your brakes. The mounting flange on this, let me just inaudible 00:00:34 over to the back, you can see is a seven bolt mounting flange design. The mounting bolts to install this, we do sell separately. Now the configuration on this, this is a left hand driver side assembly and normally when you get them it'll have a sticker on that'll tell you what side it goes on. If the sticker wasn't on there, just a hint to let you know how to tell what side this goes on, just look at the length of the pad on the shoes.

If you see the pad here, it goes from here to here and if we turn to this one, it goes all the way from here to here. That's a longer pad, so basically when you put a brake on, the shorter pad which is the primary shoe, will always face the front of the trailer, so that'll let you know that this is a left hand driver side. The dimensions on it are 12 1/4 by three and 3/8, we can measure that. The 12 1/4 is all the way across the diameter from the edge of the pad to the other pad. There's your 12 1/4 inches. Then the three and 3/8 would be the width of the pad, so if we put it on there, three and 3/8.

Again, this assembly is rated for axles up to 9.000 pounds. That should do it for the review on the Dexter Duo-Servo left hand hydraulic drum brake assembly for 9,000 pound axles.

  • 10k Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly Recommendation
I looked up your trailer and it looks like it has two Dexter 10k axles. I couldn't find info on the actual brake style though. You hinted that they aren't like electric brakes. Are they disc or hydraulic possibly? Do you have any pictures?

  • Brake Assembly Replacement for Dexter 10k Brake Assemblies 12-1/4 inch by 3-3/8 inch
We actually have brake assemblies that are 12-1/4 inch by 3-3/8 inch for Dexter 10k axles like the part # 23-411 for the right hand side and # 23-410 for the left hand side. This would be your easiest and best solution that would bolt right up to your 7 bolt mounting pattern.

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Big Tex 22N Trailer
I looked up your Big Tex 22N and was able to determine that it has 10k Dexter axles so for brake assemblies you'd wan the part # 23-410-411 for if you have hydraulic brakes or # 23-450-451 for electric and you'd be set.

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Dexter 10,000 lb Trailer Axles
How is the adjustment of the assemblies? Typically the problem you are having is due to the assemblies not being adjusted properly. Ideally they are tight enough that there's a light drag as you turn them by hand. To see how to manually adjust trailer brake assemblies check out the video I attached, fast-forward to the 4:35 mark of the video. Since we know you have 10k Dexter axles the correct brake assemblies are the part # 23-450-451 for if you have an electric brake setup or part...

  • Replacement Braking Assemblies for a 10,000 Lb Trailer Axle
The correct replacement braking assembly for your trailer should be either the Hayes/AL-KO Hydraulic Brake Kit part # K23-524-00-2 or the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit part # 23-410-411. If you take a look for a tag on the center of the axle that should tell you the manufacturer and weight capacity. If not you would need to inspect the brake mounting flange and size of the assembly. The Dexter assembly uses a 7 bolt brake mounting flange and is 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide (see photo...

We have drum brake assemblies for your 10K Dexter axles. If you want the electric assemblies, we have the Dexter Electric Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12-1/4" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 9K to 10K # 23-450-451 if your hubs are 12-1/4 by 3-3/8 inches. If you have hydraulic brakes we have the following: # 23-410-411 for 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch drum # K23-524-00-2 for 12-1/4 x 3-1/2...

  • Correct Replacement for Dexter Hub/Drum 8-415
I was able to cross reference the Dexter Hub/Drum 8-415 to the Dexter Trailer Hub Drum Assembly part # 8-430-5UC3 which should be an exact replacement. I don't have any depth measurements of the above/drum but what you would need to measure to confirm is the inside of the contact surface on the hub where the shoe rides and this should measure 12-1/4" x 3-3/8". If so, you should be good to go. In regards to braking assemblies, the best option we have is the Dexter Brake Kit part # 23-450-451...

I was able to cross reference the Dexter Hub/Drum 8-415 to the Dexter Trailer Hub Drum Assembly part # 8-430-5UC3 which should be an exact replacement. Which means for braking assemblies, the best option we have is the Dexter Brake Kit part # 23-450-451 or part # 23-410-411.

  • Parts Needed to Convert Electric Brakes to Hydraulic Drum Brakes on Kaufman Trailer
We do have everything you need to convert the electric brakes on your trailer to hydraulic drum brake assemblies. I have attached a great article that will walk you through everything that is needed to make this conversion. For the brake assemblies themselves, we do have one kit available in the 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 size you are needing for 10,000 pound axles. The Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit # 23-410-411 includes both the Left Hand and RIght Hand assemblies and features a 7 bolt mounting...

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies for 31 Foot Travel Trailer with Tandem Axles
For axles that are roughly 5,000 lbs each base on your 10,000 lb rating, you will need 12 inch brake assemblies for your 31 foot travel trailer. I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12" # AKEBRK-7-SA. If you have hydraulic brakes, you will want # AKFBBRK-7 instead which is a free-backing brake assembly. These assemblies both work with the standard 5 bolt mounting flange on axles of this capacity level. If you meant that each axle was rated for 10,000 lbs, then...

  • Parts Needed to Convert Trailer with 8k Electric Brakes to 8k Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Converting from electric drum brakes to electric over hydraulic drum is pretty straight-forward. Basically you swap out the electric brake assemblies for hydaulic ones, you run hydraulic lines and then install an actuator and you'd be all set. For hydraulic brake assemblies you'd want the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Set part # 23-410-411 which is a set that includes one passenger side assembly and one driver side. The actuator kit then to go with is the Hydrastar kit part # HBA-12 as...

  • Can Dexter Trailer Hub # 008-399-93 Be Used with Drum Brakes
The Dexter Trailer Hub # 008-399-93 that you referenced can only be used for disc brakes with the addition of an appropriately rated rotor assembly like # K71-635-00. For electric or hydraulic drum brakes a hub-and-drum assembly is needed instead. For an oil bath 8,000 pound hub-and-drum assembly that will fit the same spindle as the above option the Dexter # 8-285-10UC3-A will work perfectly. For the corresponding brake assemblies I recommend the Dexter Self-Adjusting # 23-450-451 for...
