Video Transcript for Demco Trailer Connector Adapter Installation - 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited

Ryan: Hey, everyone. Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Demco Trailer Wire Adapter with the six way on one end and a seven way on the other. So this is going to transfer the power and signals from the motor home to the back of our jeep. Now this is put your mind at ease knowing you have such a solid connection point from your motor home to your Jeep. You're also not going to have to worry about it dragging on the ground and getting damaged or anything like that, because it is coiled.

And other motorists are also going to appreciate the fact that your lighting actually works and they're going to know what your intentions are when you're going down the road. Now this is going to be a great choice for a flat tow setup. So whether you're a first timer or veteran flat tower, this is going to get the job done just fine. Now there are a few different models of these style connectors on the market. However, this one's probably one of my personal favorites. I really like it's coil design, just has a really thick insulation to help keep it in good shape over the years.

I also like the inaudible 00:01:12 on each end. It has a handle which really helps you get those connectors unplugged. Now I personally would recommend some dielectric grease and what you'll do with that, let's put it on your terminals on the plug and your connector and that'll help keep them protected from any type of corrosion. That's always a good idea to use that dielectric grease occasionally, because a lot of the time the cable itself will last a very long time, but it's the terminals inside that get corroded and you lose that connection point and they're beyond repair. You'll have to get a replacement cable. Now many of our customers wrote in and said that they're really amazed at how durable this really is.

They said even after years of use, it's still working perfectly. And one thing you're not going to have to worry about is this thing getting all tangled up and turning into a big mess, because of how it's coiled. So whenever you're making that turn it's going to stretch out and then as you straighten back out, it'll contrast like this. Now the overall length of our cable, if you we're to stretch it all the way out, is seven foot. Before we begin our installation, I would just like to point out the components that we're going to be using for our complete flat tow set up. Right here, this is our base plate and this is going to connect to the front of the jeep and give an attachment point from our tow bars to our motor home.

The tow bars are right here and like I said, one end is going to connect to our base plate on the other end is going to plug into our motor home's hitch, and that'll connect it to. Now we're also going to use some safety cables, and this'll connect from the motor home to the base plate as well just in case we have a breakaway situation, there's something still holding us together. Now we're also going to have some wiring and this is going to hook up to our jeep and it's going to transfer the signals such as our brake lights, our turn signals, our running lights from our motor home to our Jeep. We're also going to be using a braking system. And this is the Stay and Play Duo by Demco. It is not set up for air brakes, so if your RV or motor home has air brakes, I would suggest the Air Force One. But this is going to use an inertia switch and your taillight signals to proportionally apply the Jeep's brakes, like I said, in proportion with your motor homes braking. So this is going to apply the Jeep's breaks to help slow it down when you're flat towing. And lastly, we're going to have a seven way to six way pigtail connector, and one end of this is going to connect to your motor home's seven way plug in the back and the other end is actually going to plug in to the front of the jeep, and this will actually transfer the signals from your motor home to the wiring that we're going to install to light up your Jeep's taillights. And we're also going to be using a brake light switch. Now what this is going to do, this is going go hookup by your brake pedal, and when you're braking system applies that brake pedal, it's going to activate this switch and this is going to send a signal to your indicator light, which a indicator light is going to let you know that your braking system is working properly when you're not inside of the Jeep, so when you're flat towing down the road, it's a quick signal you can check to make sure everything's working. And depending on how high or low your Jeep sets in comparison with how high or low your motor home sets, you may need a high/low adapter, which all that is, it's a bracket that plugs into your motor homes hitch and it either goes up or down. That way whenever you plug in your tow bar to that, it's nice and level and it really helps when you're going down the road. Now typically when you would install this, you'd do it while you're doing a whole flat tow setup. So it'd be in your best interest to do this while the whole bumper is off and give you plenty of room to work. Now I have a few of my wires connected, but they're all going to get secured the exact same way. So I left one undone so I can show you. Now usually on the end of this wiring, you'll have a four pole flat connector. So what you're going to want to do is cut that off. You'll strip the insulation back, and then when I like to do is put a little dielectric grease just like this on end of my wire to help keep it protected from the elements or corrosion. Now before you connect your wires to the six pole connector, it will come with a rubber sleeve like this, and that's going to help keep everything protected and covered too. So you just want to make sure you slide that over your wires first, can even push it back out of the way for now.Now each opening on the back of the connector is going to be labeled. The TM, that's going to be for your tail lights. The GD is going to be for your ground. LT and RT, that for your right and left turn signals. So you're going to want to put the wires in accordingly. Now to do that, for this whole example, that's TM, that's our taillights, we're to put a brown wire in it. If you actually kind of turn over our connector there's going to be a little slot with a flat head set screw. So you're going to back that out. You don't have to take completely out, just a few turns and that'll actually give you room to put your wire in.We'll take our wire and push it down. Do your best to kind of hold it in place and then tighten up that set screw. Once you have it snug, it's a good idea to kind of just lightly pull on it to make sure it's in there good. Now one thing I like to do, once we have our all our wires in is just take that dielectric grease, and kind of just blob it on everything. Kind of just goes that extra step to keep everything protected. And take our cover, that's simply just pushes over just like that. And what I'm going to do is just take some electrical tape and kind of tape the end of our rubber sleeve.Once that's all set up, what you do is just push it into the spot where it's getting held in place. Now in this case, our bracket is part of our base plate, but if that isn't your situation, you can always find brackets that are available and a handful of different styles on etrailer.com. And you can just take some hardware to go ahead and secure it. Now this particular kit doesn't come with any hardware, this actually was included with our base plate, but if you need some hardware, you can pick some up at the local hardware store. Now with everything in place and hooked up, it's always a good idea to test it to make sure everything is working properly. I went ahead and used our pigtail cord with our kit to plug it into our six way into our seven way. Now I'm just using a testing device. If you don't have one of these, you can just use your tow vehicle to plug the inaudible 00:09:29 to.Now we're checking our tail lights, our left turn, our right turn. And our brake lamps. Now since we verified everything is working properly, what we can do is go ahead and put everything back. And that'll do it for our look at and installation of the Demco Trailer Wire Adapter on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL.

The cord is great and works just as advertised. The only drawback is that the picture on the box shows a blade six pin connector not the actual round pin connector on that end. I had a momentary heart attack until I got the box open and inspected the actual cord.

After short consultation with etrailer representative, we found the perfect fit for my 7 blade, 6 pin set up. It fits and works perfectly. Delivery was quick, too,

After 1 yr of use, I wonder why I didn’t replace this connection earlier. The blades and pins match up perfectly as it takes very little effort to . Old pin required jiggling, swearing, and contortions to .

Just the right product with super fast delivery. The site is easy to navigate to the parts you need and the price was better than I found in other places and I think here I found higher quality.

by:

I had to take a part one of the plugs because the wires were hanging out of the plug and had to shorten the wires so the red insulation was on the inside of the plug .

by:

I had issues ordering this item through another reseller but Tammy took the time to understand exactly what I needed and get me the right part.

by:

Happy to find this option. I didn’t have to resort to re-wiring a plug.

by:

right product, shipped quickly

When I ordered this power cord, Sheryl H. looked long and hard to find a power cord for my needs since most Roadmaster cords were sold out. She arranged fast shipping and I got it in a very timely manner. Thanks Sheryl H., you are a tremendous asset for eTrailer.

I have to compliment Rebecca and the entire staff of etrailer for processing my order for a Demco tow bar. I ordered the Demco to match an previously installed tow bar on a 1999 Geo Tracker. Had no idea what mfr provided the original tow bar but Rebecca did the research and quickly responded identifying the original mfr, model, and the various accessories needed to tow the car. The entire process was a success and cant thank etrailer enough for the prompt response.

Excellent product.
Old cable that came
with the tow bar was of poor design and quality.
Excellent and professional service/support.
My first order from these guys; this will be the first place I check the next time I need something.

After a careful review of all the flat towing options available for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator I chose the Demco Excalibar II and tab less baseplate. The engineering and build quality are superb and they have a few features that just aren't available on other tow bars - with the limited life time warranty being a huge benefit. The advantages of ordering from etrailer are not only competitive pricing but amazing in-stock inventory. But the biggest advantage they have is the level of expertise available from their "how to" video library and the towing/RVing gurus available by phone. I have yet to be disappointed.

Comments
After a year of use Im sure glad we chose the Demco Excalibar and Baseplate combo. It is easy to install, doesnt require any cutting or modifications to our Gladiator and the tow bar is VERY sturdy and is also very easy to hook up and to un hook once we reach our destination. I heartily recommend not only Demco but eTrailer too due to their amazing expertise.

The Roadmaster part # RM-146-7 would be longer than the Demco part # DM9523054 that you referenced. The Roadmaster is listed as having an extended length of up to 8 feet whereas the Demco is 7 feet so at 7 feet the Roadmaster would have less tension.
