Installation

To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle. Once you've spliced in the converter, connect the included hot lead to the black wire and run it up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.


Then locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using the provided ring terminal and screw. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties.


It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on the 4-pole connector to help prevent corrosion.


Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.


This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.


Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C59236. This is the Curt Powered Taillight Converter with a four-pole flat trailer connector here on this end right here. This is going to provide the connector at the back of your vehicle. That's going to help power your trailer signal lights. The connector is compatible with five-pole, six-pole, and seven pole adapters. Those items are sold separately.

We do carry those if you need one. This unit's going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. It's going to work with two-wire, three-wire and pulse-width modulation systems. It's designed to connect directly to your battery to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system through all the wiring. Everything that you need for your full installation is going to be included with this kit. The box back here, it's going to be constructed using surface-mount technology for consistent, reliable performance.

What that means is, it's going to maximize the trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. It's also going to ensure superior operation even in rough-road conditions. The unit's designed to resist water and vibration, thanks to the specially designed enclosure. Again, it's going to connect directly to your vehicle's wiring, or to the vehicle's battery through the wiring, and it's going to connect to the vehicle's wiring with the included quick-splice connectors. That's going to be these blue pieces right here.

You'll just lay the wires in there and splice them together. It's a nice design, pretty simple installation. It's going to come with some really nice detailed instructions. These are going to walk you through the installation process step by step. They have the nice little diagram down there that's going to assure you that you're connecting everything correctly. As long as you go by the instructions, again, it's step by step, you should be ready to go. It's going to include your fuse holder.

You're going to get the fuse, some self-tapping screws, all the necessary connectors, quick-splice connectors. You're going to get some double-sided adhesive tape to secure the box to a nice clean surface. You're going to get some zip ties to tidy up the wires. Makes for an overall neater appearance and it keeps the wires safe. It's going to come with a dust cap here for the four-way flat connector. It's a color-coded installation, so the color-coded wires and the wiring guide are going to help ease the installation process. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at five amps per circuit. For the taillights, we're looking at seven point five amps per circuit. To determine the best place to splice into your vehicle's taillight wiring, you need to consult the included instructions. It's going to have all the details that you need to know. Then you would use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the taillight converter to the corresponding wires from the vehicle. Once you splice in the converter, then you have to connect the included hot lead. The hot lead's going to be the black wire right here. It's going to connect to the bundle black wire. This is going to run to the vehicle's battery. You're going to connect these with a butt connector. Other end of the black wire gets a butt connector attached to it and connects to one end of the fuse holder. Other end of the fuse holder gets a ring terminal attached to it, and that connects to the positive post on the vehicle battery. Again, it's going to come with the included fuse so you can put that in the fuse holder. Then you're going to need to locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the taillights. Put the double-sided adhesive tape over the back of the box here. Just stick it to the side there for a nice secure hold. It's going to keep it up and out of the way in a nice safe area. Then you're going to need to find a raw metal surface. It's going to be your white wire with the ring terminal right here. You're going to need to find a raw metal surface to use as a grounding point and secure the white wire with the ring terminal, using one of the included self-tapping screws. Then you can secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties. We're also going to recommend that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on the four-pole connector to help prevent any type of corrosion from being able to settle in. Again, it does come with that dust cap so yu can protect the connection points when it's not being used. That's going to do it for our review of part number C59236. The Curt Powered Tail Light Converter (w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector) is a critical component to a trailer hitch, and unfortunately the most finicky/tricky part of the installation for a DIY self-installer. However, after research and plenty of viewings of installation videos (including the one on eTrailer.com) it came together successfully. This product worked quite well. Most installations recommend running the main-power wire along the undercarriage to connect to the battery. However, in my installation on our 2016 Mazda CX9, upon inspection I found that route to be far too difficult (requiring the removal of a number of undercarriage/skid plastic panels, plus getting into the engine compartment was to be a huge challenge) - instead I found the easier/better option (which I used) was to stay inside the passenger compartment and run the wire along the floor behind door panels. It worked out quite well, and then access past the fire-wall into the engine compartment was accomplished using the same access-hole/rubber-boot that the factory used to bring all the OEM wiring in. All in all - the installation was successful this Curt wiring harness was well designed and we saved a significant amount of money by installing it ourselves. Thanks! 447338

I installed it on a 2004 Sprinter van. Took some time but was not difficult. Both the wire to go to the right side and the one to go to the battery were short. But I was able to splice the right blinker in to the bundle that ran over there and knew the power wire to the front would be too short from other reviews. So far works great and I would buy again. The wiring harness you purchased isnt a vehicle-specific item, it would fit many different vehicles so therefore it wouldnt be possible to color code the wires as different vehicles use different wire colors. I do have a video showing a different wiring harness being installed on your vehicle. Simply use the provided link to view the video.The install procedure on your vehicle should be identical.

The harness works well, and took a coupe of hours (and attempts) to install on my Golf R. It took over an hour to run the power wire to the battery through the interior/firewall. The rest of the basic install was a breeze. It was a bit more problematic for me, as I had installed the Euro tail lights (which have separate turn signals). The kit i bought could handle the 5-4 conversion, but I ran into a problem. Even though the car was re-coded for the lights and supplying 5 V to the running lights, both kits I tried would not trigger running lights on the 4-wire output. On the advice of a tech (thank you!), he mentioned that he had seen one other instance where it worked to use the license plate light as a source for the running light input. That worked perfectly, and ended up being a grey wire in the passenger side rear bundle. A little extra wire (and another TIGHT splice, and all was good. Thanks, again for all of your help! The instructions for their universal wiring harness are very simple and easy to read, but finding the color diagram for the tail-lights on BMW 5-Series to match it up to took several hours. And I'm glad I did, otherwise I was about to really mess it up. (I was about to match color to same color, when my wife called in for dinner. Considering the BMW color schematic i would have ended up butchering those wires before I ever got it right.) 499246

Pretty straight forward install on a 2013 Audi Q5 S-Line. There is an ground lug on the rear inside panel right next to a convenient spot to mount the unit. I removed the silver panel along the tailgate sill to route the power wire and the trailer plug tail before I started. It clips off easily, and you can reach between the side panel and the battery compartment with your fingers. There's a small electrical connector on the panel, so be careful to disconnect it before yanking on it. Make sure you replace this panel as soon as you have routed the wires, as that electrical connector is to two micro switches that detect if the door is closed... there is no power to the rear lights while the tailgate is up, so this panel needs to be in place before you start wiring. Correct wires were easy to locate. The 2013 Q5 is a little different to the wiring types listed in the instructions, as while the brake runs off the turn signals, there is a separate tail light wire. If you are probing for the wires, close the tailgate, and climb in through the rear passenger door. Here are the correct splices off the tan connector... Tail Light (Brown) - splice to Black with Green trace Left Signal (Yellow) - splice to Gray with Black Trace Right Signal (Green) - splice to Gray with Blue trace Red and White both Grounded together. The only issue I had was that the blue splice connectors supplied are too big for the fine wires on the Audi, so when I tested the install, I had nothing working. I replaced the blue connectors with the smaller red ones, and all worked perfectly then. Start to finish, about 90 minutes. 232589

The installation instructions are straight forward. Installing on my 2018 Tiguan was a bit of a pain in the butt as VW gives you little to no slack on the tail light harness to work with. Literally maybe 2 inches of slack if that! Also you have to run the 12V battery wire under the vehicle as there is nowhere to get thru the firewall so running the wire inside the vehicle is not possible. There was however plenty of wire supplied for the 12V supply to get the install completed. Also the Tiguan has a windage tray the length of the vehicle so as long as you secure the wire away from any moving parts its well protected. My only complaint with the product, (And this is nit picking a little), was the green wire that supports the right taillight, Blinker/stop light was a bit short. It would have been nice to have maybe 4 more inches to work with. As it was, I had no slack on the Tiguan harness and this just made it more of a pain in the butt to install. There was enough wire to get from the left side of the vehicle to the right side but just enough and a little more slack would have made it easier. My install difficulties with the Tiguan is no fault of the product but other then the green wire being a little short the product works as advertised. Again installation is straight forward and difficulties running the wire thru the vehicle is no fault of the product! I gave it 5 stars as it does work well. 444853

The Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector arrived right on schedule. The kit is excellent. The kit for my 2018 Hyundai Kona required one to splice into the appropriate wires to get the signals required to operate the module. One a previous vehicle, it was just a matter of unplugging some connectors and plugging in the adapter plugs, nice clean and easy. Not so with the Kona. The brake and tail light wires were relatively easy to obtain, but the left and right turn wires were up under the turn signal lights and difficult to get at. I ran wires under the vehicle and brought them into the spare tire area through a hole in which I installed a rubber grommet to the wires would not be cut. All four control wired were connected to a terminal block mounted inside the hatch on the drivers side. The converter was mounted just above the terminal block and the four wires were shortened and connected to the appropriate terminals on the block. Being an electrical engineer, I was able to determine which wire to connect to with a voltmeter. I wasn't able to find anything about wire colors and signs names. It all worked out nice and clean. 539215

I'm very satisfied with the product ! I followed the directions and watched the video on the eTRAILER website. WATCH THE VIDEO SEVERAL TIME ! DO IT. Don't get in a hurry. Just settle down and take it one step at a time. Do all the recommended tests. If you have a voltmeter you can stick a pin in the wire you want to identify, attach the red - positive lead from the voltmeter to the pin, and the black- negative lead to GROUND.. ie. bare metal on the car - I used a screw hole that you see when you take off the rear brake light nacelles. You can see it's shiny metal in the threaded hole. Turn the voltmeter to DC volts .. you are watching for 12v. Naturally it will cycle with the turn signal wires. Running lights won't cycle.. they go stay on . IF you test each wire before you build the connection you'll be sure to get it right. Just relax and think ! You'll be fine. The wire that goes to the battery is a bit of a hassle to install as you have to crawl around under the car or truck. My jeep is easy to crawl under :) if you have to jack up the car USE JACK STANDS EVERY TIME. If you're afraid to get under the car get a friend to help you. Use the zip ties to keep the wire to the battery from flopping around. Make sure you don't get the wire near exhaust pipe or exhaust manifold, steering column or any MOVING PARTS.. Use the whole length of the wire... don't cut it off until you're SURE you have it where you want it and it reaches easily to the battery. Expect some minor hassles. You might have to stop and go back and check the video or the wiring instructions. Just take it one step at a time... and you'll be AOK ! 443803

Wiring the hitch was the biggest challenge for this project. This kit is designed for cars with the battery in the trunk. My battery is in the front of the car, so I had to run a wire all the way to the front of the car. The instructions were pretty vague on how to accomplish this, and the work itself ended up taking me many hours -- removing plastic underbody panels, routing the wire away from hot / rotating items and keeping everything tidy. Product arrived in two days via UPS. Even sooner than the predicted arrival date. I installed it on my 2008 BMW 328xi SEDAN. That's right. A trailer hitch on a sedan! I experienced some minor frustration with removing interior panels from my trunk, unbundling the existing rear light wiring, etc. However, it was much easier than it would have been on some cars, since the battery is located in the trunk. But NONE of my install difficulties had to do with the wiring kit! It went in and worked perfectly. Before I fastened all the car's parts back in place, I made sure to test it with the Curt #I26 LED 4-way wiring tester that I also had ordered . The tester works very nicely as well. The only (very temporary) scare I had was when I first turned on my car ignition to test the wiring. I got a big, red "!" (exclamation mark) on my dash display. I quickly looked up the code in my car owner's manual and it said "you have turned on your ignition with your driver's door open". Thank-you for your concern BMW, but the install and the wiring kit appears to be perfect. 710576

BMW X1s don't come with a trailer hitch. There is no factory option. So, if you want to tow a trailer or just a bike rack, you have to pay big bucks or get your hands dirty. I chose the latter and am enjoying the fruits of my labor. Etrailer's Draw-Tite MaxFrame 75761 was a perfect, if tight, fit. To make it work you need to temporarily undo some of BMW's bumper support and manhandle the mounting brackets onto the bolts past the muffler. The most difficult task is tightening the bolts. A flat ratchet, rather than a socket set is almost a must. When you are done, you have a unobtrusive factory look. It helps with the wiring that on the 2013-15 X1 the battery is in the back and you don't need to run the cables into the engine compartment in the front. I have used my trailer hitch now for over a year without problems for bike racks, utility and motorcycle trailers. Fully satisfied. 703335

I finished the installation of the hitch and wiring harness last night. I left turn signal wasn't working but that's because I didn't secure the wire properly in the butt connector. The only suggestion I would make is when they tell you to use tape so you won't scratch your paint from the tail light I would suggest using a soft rag or paper towel because the tape left gum on my paint now I need to remove that.
