Video Transcript for Tow Ready Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 20147 Review

Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Tow Ready replacement seven way harness and socket for factory tow packages. This replaces the damaged factory seven way wiring harness and socket on your vehicle. The seven way trailer connector plugs into the socket. If you need a new seven way trailer connector they are sold separately and can be found at etrailer.com. This is a universal design, meaning that it is not vehicle specific. On this end you'll see all the exposed wires. The unit's designed to hard wire into the vehicle wiring with the included butt connectors.

It's gonna come with two sizes of butt connectors, these are for 16 to 14 gauge wires, these are for 12 to 10 gauge wires. These are heat shrink connectors, so once you have them connected you can heat the ends and that's going to shrink them around the wiring, creating a nice, water tight connection. We have a wire loom that goes over the wires that's gonna offer protection, it's gonna keep them from damage. The harness itself measures about 17 inches long from the back of the socket to the very end of the wires. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Tow Ready replacement seven way harness and socket for a factory tow package.

these products worked with my silverado and did the job. Delivery was within the time I planed for so all is good . I would look to this website again for other products should I need them. 693256

Well I fixed my brake control problem on my Ford F-250 Super Duty. I learned how to bench test my Tekonsha 9030 Voyager brake control from your website and ruled it out, then I focused on the wiring harness at the hitch. The 7 way plug worked in the bed at the fifth wheel, but not at the hitch. I checked for continuity at the wire harness connector and the 7 way plug and discovered that the connector end of the harness was bad. I ordered the splice in style Tow Ready Replacement 7-Way Harness and Socket for Factory Tow Package and that solved the issue. I found that the corresponding wires on the replacement were not all the colors as the corresponding OEM wires, so I matched them up by position without further issue. I pleased with the outcome and price I paid for the product. 702940

Pigtail is heavy duty and butt connectors are also of a good quality. Worked perfect as a replacement for my broken factory one. 650631

Works great. Wire colors did not match up with the colors on Truck. Had to take a few minutes to figure them out with a test light. 736729

Fought with factory plug longer than I should have because no one sells this plug locally, without buying the entire wiring harness. Pulled trailer for 2 days and no problems. Swapping out could not have been easier. Everything matched up perfectly. Ordered on Saturday and was back in service Thursday morning. I will definitely be using & recommending etrailer.com! 617966

Ask the Experts about this Tow Ready Wiring

  • Troubleshooting Constant Power on Drivers Side Tail Light of Trailer Connector
It sounds like you have a crossed wire after the fuse panel. Sometimes this happens inside the trailer connector, so I recommend removing your trailer connector and using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test each of the wire functions at the US Car Connection locations like you see on this harness # 20147. If this connection works correctly then you will want to replace the 7-way connector on your vehicle because it has an internal issue. If this is the case, I recommend the Hopkins...

  • How to Remove 7-Way Trailer Wiring Plug from Socket on 2015 Audi Q7 with Factory 7-Way
A vehicle 7-way harness will have a locking tab of some type to ensure the wiring harness remains connected to the socket. This is an important safety feature for maintaining all of the trailer signals but especially so for the power to the trailer brakes. The exact appearance and operation of these locking tabs can vary. For example, on Hopkins 7-way harness # HM40975-11998 there is a small grey locking tab, shown in one of the linked photos, that slides to lock/unlock the connection....

  • Compatibility of Hopkins 40950 Trailer Connector with Tow Ready Pigtail Wiring Harness 20147
The Tow Ready Replacement 7-Way Harness and Socket for Factory Tow Package # 20147 is a factory style pigtail that is compatible with the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector - Vehicle End # HM40950. These factory style connectors are called US Car Connectors and they are absolutely compatible with each other as well as many others. You may also want to consider the Mounting Bracket and Installation Hardware # PK12711U and the Curt No-Drill Bracket for...

  • Replacement Trailer Pigtail Harness and Connector for a 2018 Ram 2500
The 7-Pole and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Sockets w/ Mounting Bracket and Wiring part # HM40975-11998 is what I recommend using on a 2018 Ram 2500 as the pigtail and trailer connector would be the same as what would have come on the truck when rolled off the assembly line. If you have a cutout in the rear bumper for the trailer connector you can simply discard the included mounting bracket. Please disregard any fit notes on the product page. If you just need the pigtail harness you can...

  • Troubleshooting RV Backup Lights Staying on When Towed Car is Connected
The most likely cause for the RV backup lights to suddenly stay on when your towed vehicle is connected is corrosion in the RV connector. In a 7-way socket (please see photo) the 12V power contact at the 1:00 position and the backup light contact in the center can become bridged together. This can occur from corrosion on the inside of the connector or from trapped water or other foreign material that connects these two circuits. You can try an aerosol electrical contact cleaner like...

  • Does 7-Way Round Connector # 20147 Fit 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500
The round connector of the # 20147 is the exact same connector as what's on your 2018 Chevy Silverado so once wired to your truck it would be exactly the same. The blue wire of this would carry the OEM brake controller voltage to the trailer brakes like needed as well. For a new 7-way connector in case yours is broken or damaged you could use the # HM40975 as well which will plug right into this round connector.

  • Does Hopkins 7-Way Harness # 20147 Fit Standard 7-Way Connectors
I can't find any info on a Hopkins or other brand 7-way with a part number of 97149 but if you have an OEM style 7-way connector on your vehicle the # 20147 has the correct round connector. This also is the correct connector to plug into a combo 7 and 4-way like part # HM40975 which I believe you may interested in as well.

  • Mounting Tow Ready Replacement 7-Way Harness and Socket # 20147
The Tow Ready Replacement 7-Way Harness and Socket # 20147 is designed to plug into any US Car connector 7-Way like the Hopkins Endurance 7-Way Connector # HM40940. This particular 7-Way includes the needed hardware to bolt it directly to a bumper or truck bed, but you could also add the Mounting Bracket # 18138 that will work perfectly for a hang-down application. If you have an accessible hitch crosstube you could also add the Tow Ready Mount # 18140 for a no-drill installation. This...

  • 7-Way with 2' of Wire for 2002 Ford E-350 Chassis
The Curt T-Connector # C55774 is actually for Ford pickups so for your 2002 Ford E-350 you need the Reese # 74682 instead. Either way the wiring isn't long enough (only about 6" or 7" long) so you'll need to splice in the 18" long extension piece # 20147 since you are needing 2' of wiring.

  • How to Extend Trailer Connector to Mount on Aftermarket Bumper
I do have a solution to extend your 7 way to reach your new bumper, the Tow Ready Replacement 7 way Harness and Socket part # 20147. It provides you with an additional 17" of wire, and a US car connector to plug into the back of the seven way connector. You will cut the existing connector off your truck, and crimp the new harness on with the included butt connectors, then plug the connector into the back of the plug. If you need a new socket also, I recommend the 7-Pole and 4-Pole Trailer...

  • Troubleshooting Damaged Trailer Wiring Connector on 2002 Ford F-350
If the in-bed 7-Way on your 2002 Ford F-350 was damaged then you likely need to replace the entire wiring harness with something like the Hopkins # 41157. It would be best to inspect the connectors for any damage as well. As far as fuses go, if you turn to page 162 in your copy of the owner's manual you should see that the fuses in locations 6, 38, 101, 115, and 305 are for the various trailer functions. Aside from this if you're still having issues you'd need to take your pickup to...

We do have a trailer side 7-way connector that will allow you to connect your trailer to the 7-way on your 2015 Honda Pilot, but the part # 20147 you referenced is a vehicle-side connector and will not hook up to your trailer. What you need instead is the Mighty Cord 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector with Molded Cable - Trailer End # A10-7W6. I have added a link to a video review and installation of this connector for you to take a look at.
