Video Transcript for Tekonsha Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 119179 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the upgraded Modulite, circuit protected vehicle wiring harness, with a 4-pole flat trailer connector. This product's going to provide a 4-way flat trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately. Now, this is a resettable short-circuit, and overload protection system, that's going to safe guard itself and the tow vehicle, against harmful, electrical, shorts, and miswire situations. It is designed to automatically reset. It virtually eliminates draw on the vehicle's taillight circuit.

Now, the taillight circuit has been upgraded to work with vehicles using pull swift modulation that's PWM, which allows a converter to fully turn on, giving the trailer lights full brightness during activation. This unit's going to power the trailer stop, turn, tail, and running lights directly from the tow vehicle's battery. And the unit's going to prevent feedback from the trailer to the vehicle's system. It may be used on two- and three-wire systems. When using this on a two-wire system, the brake wire on the harness must be grounded. And it adapts a three-wire system on the towing vehicle to work with a two-wire system on your trailer. It will work on vehicles and trailer with either LED, incandescent, or standard bulb taillights.

And it will work with most multiplex wiring systems. You'll notice that here, on the 4-way connector, it does come with the dust cover. It's going to cover up the connection points when the plugs not being used. Plenty of wiring there for your applications, so that way, you can either mount it near the trailer hitch, or you can roll it up and store it up in the trunk, or the cargo area of your vehicle. To go over some of the different functions, real quick. It's pretty simple, your green wire, right here, is going to connect to the right turn signal wire.

This thick, red wire, is going to be the power wire. This is the hot lead that runs to the vehicle battery. Then, right here, you're going to have a bundle of wiring, that's going to be a white wire, brown, yellow, and red. And I'll go over those functions here in a moment. When connecting this, you want to be careful not to exceed 2.1 amps per circuit for the stop and turn lights, and a 5.6 amps per circuit for the taillights. Connection points for this harness are typically located behind the driver side and passenger side taillights on the vehicle.

And again, when installing, the brown wire, is going to connect to the taillight circuit. Red wire, the smaller red wire, connects to the stop light wire. Yellow wire connects to the left turn signal. Green wire connects to the right turn signal. The white wire has a ring terminal on it, that's a ground wire, so that needs to get grounded to a suitable grounding location. And then this thick, red wire is, again, the hot lead. This is the power wire. This will need to be ran from the converter, which is the black box. It will need to be ran from that black box, to the vehicle battery through an in-line fuse holder. We do recommend using the Modulite installation wiring kit, item number 118151. It is available and sold separately here at etrailer.com. That's going to do it for today's look at the upgraded Modulite circuit protected vehicle wiring harness with a 4-pole flat trailer connector.

I installed this on my 2013 Victory Cross Country Tour. I didn't receive instructions, or I may have lost them immediately after opening the package (not unheard of for me), and couldn't download the instructions on my phone or PC; but I pieced together the wiring requirements from comments on other reviews (thanks to all that posted info). I'm going one step further for any Victory owners hooking up this unit, and post the Victory connections that can be accessed under the seat in the wire bundle. I purchased this wiring harness to replace a similar one I had purchased in 2008. It was easy to install, and my trailer is once again working perfectly. eTrailer gave me some good advice that saved me some money too. I would definitely buy from eTrailer again. The replacement harness box was about half the size of the original which made it easier to install in a tight space in my trunk. I only had 1 minor concern: the old version had labels indicating the purpose for each wire, but they were missing on this version. These labels were helpful in the original install in 2008. 151582

This light system worked just fine on my '98 M3. I would skip the extra cost of the kit that includes some extra wire and crimps and get this kit, especially if you already have some electrical supplies. No issues whatsoever with this and relatively easy to install as per online instructions. 488823

This product is heavy-duty & robust. It's "potted" so the electronics are hermetically sealed & protected. The wires used are high quality & heavy gauge (for this application). Simple to install but have patience routing the power wire to the battery. Stay clear of hot exhausts & suspension components as well as any hot engine surfaces. Great product! 326040

I have ordered multiple times from etrailer and I am always happy. The prices are competitive with what you would find on amazon and ebay but you get the service here. Questions are answered and tech videos are available to walk you through an install. That is real value you can't find anywhere else. I will only do business here and I appreciate a website that can still give a personal touch in a world where real customer service is lost. I can buy parts anywhere, it's the people that make the difference. 193246

The install was easy to complete, took about half hour total by myself. Didn't realize that some extra parts and pieces were required but it wasn't hard to get those items. Functions really well with the lights I have on my box carrier. Also love the looks that I get towing light carts with my Kia now that I can legally tow it. 175341

  • Best Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2015 Lexus RX 350
  • The 2015 Lexus RX350 could have come with a factory tow package meaning that it would be prewired for a trailer wiring harness which is what that other company that isn't nearly as awesome as us is saying. Models that do not have the factory tow package need an additional piece of equipment which is what the dealer is saying. I am assuming the dealer would know whether or not the vehicle came with the factory tow package. If it did not then that extra piece of equipment is indeed a...

  • Difference Between Tow Ready Trailer Wiring Harness # 119179 and # 119179KIT
  • You're correct. Using the 'KIT' suffix after the part number provides the power wire feed to the vehicle battery and the fuse holder, which you won't need (assuming that your existing power feed and fuse holder are in good shape). The # 119179 is exactly what you'd need. However, before installing the replacement, you'll want to closely examine the wiring on the trailer to determine if there was a short in the trailer wiring that caused the converter's demise.

  • Wiring a 2011 Victory Motorcycle and Trailer for Towing
  • For simplicity, I would recommend wiring the motorcycle trailer as a vehicle trailer would be. A powered converter wiring kit, like part # 119179KIT, would be connected to the motorcycle, which would provide a 4-pole trailer connector. • Why Do Some Vehicles Need a Converter to Add Trailer Wiring Like a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country

Trailers use a 2-wire or combined system meaning the brake lights and turn signals are on the same circuit. A converter is needed to take the separate signals from the vehicle and combine them so that the trailer lights operating on a combined system will work properly. Wires and fuses connected...

PWM is a fairly recent technology, your RX300 uses a more traditional wiring system. Without knowing what vehicle you have or what style of taillights you have on your vehicle it would be hard for me to say for certain. It could be possible that you have a 3 wire system and would need to wire it up like the illustration I attached.

  • The Tow Ready Modulite Wiring Harness, # 119179, is the correct wiring harness for your 2006 Volvo XC70 wagon. This harness was designed not to interfere with any bulb warnings or sensors on your vehicle. This harness uses power from the vehicle battery to power the lights on a trailer, so it will not draw any power from your vehicles tail light circuits. The wiring harness simply uses the signal from your tail light circuits to tell the converter box when to send power to the trailer connector....
