Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 we're gonna be showing you how to install the upgraded Modulite Vehicle Wiring Harness Kit with the four pole flat trailer connector, part number is 119147KIT.Now our four pole wire, it's gonna stay inside of the back of the vehicle until we need it. When we do we want to run it over, you see that weather stripping there is gonna give us some cushion just like that, draw up whatever length you need, and then you can close your hatch, it'll be ready to connect. When not in use I like to roll it up, we can tuck it under the storage area here, just gonna loop it back and forth on itself and our dust cover's not really gonna keep any dust off inside the car, but it can be used to go around our wiring and keep it kind of bundled up. We can tuck it right over here into this cubby hole, never have to worry about it until we needed it and pull it out and put it to use.To begin our installation we're gonna gain access into the rear areas here so we're gonna lift this up, we'll use the hook to hold it up and out of the way for us. Then you'll see at the clip you're gonna have a metal rod that runs down and holds this panel into place or this mesh into place. We'll push in towards the outside of the car then we can just lift up on that slightly and see we'll be able to rotate that up and out of the way and we'll take our screwdriver, we'll need to pop this panel up, it'll allow us to release that.

Right here we've got our tie down hook, we pop the cover off of that that'll give us the room we need to get to the torques bit.Now we'll come to the middle part of our fascia, we get another torques bit, this one uses a T30. Just gonna pull up on both sides to release our clips and rotate it out. You'll see we've got three clips on each side there. Just gonna pull out a little bit on that side panel, it's gonna give us some additional space so we can gain access on the backside here. Now we'll see the main wire loom that runs down and then there's a smaller one that goes right into the back of our taillight there. We want to strip the coating off of that so we can see the individual wires.

We need to be very careful not to cut any of the wires below it. We'll separate our wires there and we need to test, we've got a combined signal on the drivers side and on the passengers side, which means the blinker and the brake both use the same signals so we need to find that wire and we need to find our taillight wire here on the drivers side. Will you turn that off and back on so our running lights are gonna be the black wire with the purple stripe. Now we can have the left blinker turned on, we want to try to find that signal. All right and blinker off and now brakes, and off, and back on. Now to get that brake signal the vehicle will need to be running so that's gonna be the gray wire with the black stripe, those will be the two we'll be connecting here.

The only thing we have left to find is gonna be the turn signal on the passengers side of the vehicle. Now here we've got another panel to pop up there, same thing here across the bottom, and we also removed the tie down hook located on this side. We'll pull out the same way here, just giving this a little bit of room, and we'll repeat that same process. And off and back on. All right so on the passengers side you're gonna have a light green wire, it's got a brown or reddish stripe, that's gonna be the right side brake and turn signal. All right now that we've got our wires figured out here we're gonna start splicing them together. Now for the left turn and brake signal which was the gray and black wire we're gonna splice in the yellow wire.

The black wire with the purple stripe is the one we're gonna splice in the brown wire too. Now it does come with quick splice connectors but with these wires being so fine I really don't recommend using those. What we're gonna do is use a heat shrink butt connector at each of our splices, this is gonna be part number DW05744. This is gonna give us a superior connection where we don't have to worry about any wiring damage at all. We'll start with our yellow wire that's going to the gray and the black wire so we'll pull that out, just want to snip it, we're gonna strip both sides of that back. Now one side I'm gonna strip back about twice as far as you typically would, we're gonna twist that out and bend it over right in half and that's gonna give us a little bit more wire for our butt connector to grab ahold of. Just gonna slide that in and then get it crimped down. Now we'll strip our yellow wire back here, that we're gonna connect to our gray wire and we'll twist the two of them together and that's gonna go in the other side of the butt connector. It's a very good way to make a splice without a quick connect. Now we're gonna use a heat source to shrink this down, you can use a heat gun, you can use a mini-torch or you see what we're using which is just a light, just a little bit of heat at a time there and you see that's gonna shrink down around the wire, there's also a little bit of clear gel that comes out of the end and that'll indicate to you that you've got a good seal. Now we'll move on to the black and purple wire and we're gonna repeat that exact same process using our brown wire from the module. Now if we reach down just inside where we just put that back in there you see we've got a grommet that goes to the backside, it's gonna run right through the backside of that firewall that's what we're gonna bring our 12 volt wire in. That hole's gonna be located right on the top of that wire there. You just want to guide this up and through, just pull that up, I want to pass it through this grommet. We can use a screwdriver just to poke a little hole in that upside, be careful not to do any kind of damage to that other wire there. Once you've got that hole through you can pass our wire through and it'll seal right back up really nicely for us. Just pull that on through. Now we'll run this right over behind that carpeting that's in there and we'll run it right up through the same hole I brought my four pole wire through. Now we're gonna add a larger butt connector, also heat shrink, to the black wire coming out of our module, that's our 12 volt power wire. Then we'll connect it to the 12 volt wire that we ran in from the outside of the vehicle. It'll shrink down just the same way. We've also got our ground to connect, we're gonna be connecting that to the stud located right up here on the backside of the fender well, to get that off of there you're gonna need a 10 millimeter socket. As we pull that nut off you can see it kind of stays with that wiring. Gonna bring our ring terminal right over that stud and then put our nut back on there and we can get it tightened back down. Now the red wire, since it's a combined system, it's not gonna be used. The one thing we've really got left to handle is gonna be the four pole wire and the green wire, this is gonna run to the passengers side. We go right though the opening here, that'll get it down below. We'll just let that rest here in the trunk pan while we get our module box and all of our wiring tidied up on this side. We're gonna use a little bit of rubbing alcohol, you're gonna clean off the back of our box and also clean off the flat spot located right down there. We'll use our double sided foam tape, place that on the back of our module, pull that off, get it put right down there in position. Now we'll take just a couple of the zip ties and get our wires tidied up here. With that tidied up we'll slid our panel back into position here and then the weather stripping, just kind of roll that out all the way around. Now my green wire I'm gonna run right behind that same carpeting that we ran our power wire behind. Looks like to route it properly we're gonna be a little short so we're gonna add on a foot of 16 gauge wire which will be 16-1-1 and to add it in place we're gonna be using the same butt connectors we used before. Then we'll splice it right into our green wire here that has that reddish stipe, just like we did on the other side. With that in place we'll get our panel on this side put back in, replace our cover there, and we also want to get our tie down hooks put back in on both sides, put our panel back on there and then we just want to slide this past to those keepers and they can bring it back out to it.We'll put our rear scuff panel back into position, you just want to kind of move it so that all those holes line up and then you'll just pop down on there. Now we can slide our rear scuff panel back in, you just need to align those yellow fasteners, make sure our wire's not in the way, and then pop it down and just like before pull out our weather stripping. With that in place we'll put our bolt back in here and tighten it down and then do the same thing for our tie down hook over here. Now we're gonna start running our 12 volt power wire up to the front passengers side, that's where our battery is located. The major things that we're gonna be watching out for are gonna be sharp edges or any significant sources of heat, so I'm gonna go up over the heat shield here so we can avoid that. We want to also avoid any pinch points or anything else that might damage our wire. Once we get over that we'll come a little bit closer to the middle of the vehicle, we've got our brake line here, it's gonna give us a good anchor point. Now we're gonna come right up the edge of this panel on the outside. There are gonna be some plastic nuts here, gonna remove these allow us to pull that down slightly and we'll run our wire right up underneath it. You can see with those out we've got good flex there to pull this down. I also want to take these two push pin fasteners out just so when we make the turn with our wiring to go upward it'll give us a little bit of extra space here. We'll tuck it in all the way up. Let's get our nuts replaced and we're gonna bring our wiring right out underneath the heat shield here. We want to bring all of it through and then we're gonna pull it up and anchor it off on the top. We're gonna pull it right up along the backside of the firewall to buy enough room between our wire and the exhaust. We'll bring that right up and around and zip tie it off right here to this wire loom that way we can ensure that we won't have any slack that will hang down below the vehicle. You got two twist fasteners here, just want to twist and lift this up and out of the way, get the wire on through and we want to run it right back towards that positive battery stud.Once we have our black wire ran out we'll take our fuse holder, we wanna attach the ring terminal there, on the other side another one of our heat shrink butt connectors. We'll cut a length we're gonna need out of our black wire and we'll get it trimmed and get it stripped back also, crimp that down, and shrink it down just like we did our other one. Then we'll pull up on the red cap and you can see it just has those two poles that slide down in there and we can remove the nut off our stud here using the 12 millimeter socket. We'll use a 13 millimeter socket we can remove the positive stud cable here, place our ring terminal right down around it, and put it right back down in place. Let's zip tie this right up here where it's pretty convenient to get to.Now we're gonna slide the provided 15 amp fuse in the fuse holder. Now that we've got our power connected let's test it out and make sure it's working as it should be. Now our tester we're using is part number I26, just a simple four pole tester. Now we'll go run through all the signals and make sure they're working properly. We'll start out with our running lights, all right left turn signal, now right turn signal, and our brakes. With everything working properly that's gonna complete our installation of the upgraded Modulite Vehicle Wiring Harness Kit, part number 119147KIT on our 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC 300.

Installation instructions were well written. I missed on the T-One plug and play release for the Jeep Wrangler JLU by a week and recommend that over the universal kit due to the T-One being plug and play for the tail light connectors. Either way, great products. Thanks!! 502378

2010 BMW 135i

I just installed by my own on BMW 135i 2010 despite the fact few dealers and u-haul refused to help me. It is a way easier installation(45mins) as compared to other car brands, because the battery is at the back of the car. The only thing you would need from the kit is one more butt connector. I had a problem to find a place for ground - but it is solvable. I used crocodile connector and tape to connect to one of the screws of the back light. One more easy thing for dummies. To test the right wire you will need to connect one end of the tester to the ground of the car, switch on the light to test and connect the tester(which is also in the kit). For tail light you will need to switch on the car engine. If you do not want to test these here are the colors you use in your car Left side of the car in multibulb assembly wires: MODULITE ----------------------------------------------135i LEFT TURN -------------------------------------- Blue wire with green stripe BRAKES ----------------------------------------- Purple with Yellow stripe Left side of the car on Tail light bulb harness: TAIL LIGHTS ------------------------------------ Purple wire with Light Blue stripe Right side of the car in multibulb assembly: RIGHT TURN ------------------------------------- Blue wire with Brown stripe ^^^I took this description from open source of one of the BMW forums. For me it worked out well. As for the Modulite colors they are in the pdf Instructions of this Modulite. I do not know why I did not get this in a printout with modulite, but I got this info here http://www.etrailer.com/instructions.aspx?pn=119147KIT 148050

I am pretty happy with my purchase. The tow hitch arrived very promptly within a few days of ordering it. The longest part of the install was marking and cutting the plastic bumper. Once that was done it took two of us 15 minutes to bolt it in place. I did find the recommended ball mount a little low for my trailer and you might like to try one that has a 3" rise. The instructions were a bit sparse but there are several video clips on how to approach it. I used the 119147KIT for the lights and I found a guide on the Chevy Bolt forum. I do need to say that this isn't for the faint hearted! 654133

Too complicated and instructions not clear. I recommend a factory harness instead of the application. 541337

Comments

Because this wiring harness isnt a vehicle-specific item, the install instructions are indeed vague, as this product fits numerous vehicles. The basic procedure would involve using the included circuit tester to verify which wires in the vehicles tail light wiring harness control which lighting function. Once each function right turn, left turn, brake, and running lamps is identified, the corresponding wires on the trailer harness are spliced in. Yellow wire taps into the left turn circuit, green into the right turn, red into the brake lamp and brown into the running lamp circuit. The instructions cannot be any more specific as different vehicles use different wire colors to carry the different functions. Ive linked to an install video showing a similar harness being installed on a 2012 MB GLK Class. The wire colors on this vehicle might be different than whats found on yours, but the procedure for identifying which circuit carries which function would be the same.

Very very confusing and incomplete directions, NO way to understand the difference between the red "2 wire or 3 wire setup" Very very annoying, parts missing in, i.e. 12 gage wire, fuze for battery connection. I would NOT recommend anyone with a BMW 135i buy this product, I am very dissatisfied with this confusing and incomplete kit 85543

Hardwire kits like this take a little bit of extra work and require a basic understanding of some electrical basics. If anyone ever has questions, give us a call at 1-800-298-8924 and our techs can help out quite a bit with the project and get you up to speed on the background info you will need to complete the task. We also have some great videos on the subject.

It feels heavy duty and is working exactly as it should. Easy wiring in my 2005 Passat TDI. The most difficult part was bring the 12ga wire from the battery to the rear of the vehicle. The effort was worth it; I have a professional looking install that works perfectly. 78902

The product works perfectly. A year later it still looks and works like a factory installed item.

2013 Toyota Prius

I recommend the Tow-Ready 119147KIT instead of the Curt Model for a 2013 Prius. I had to return the Curt Kit because the running lights/tail light stayed on all the time even with the vehicle off. Sometimes there wasn’t a tail/running light on if you reset the converter by removing and re-installing the fuse. This Tow-Ready model works like it should. You'll need 12 gauge wire to run from the battery, (right side hatch area,) to this unit which will need to be mounted on the driver’s side, rear hatch. At the very top of the left rear tail light are covered wires going into a plug. The Blue is the Stop light and the Brown is the tail/running light. (Be careful since these wires are thin solid copper wires.) Left turn signal is the green/yellow stripe wire and on the right side rear lamp the right turn signal is also the green/yellow stripe wire. You will need to remove the left rear panel to get to the blue and brown wires. Remove the bottom tray cover, the bottom tray as well as the left rear plastic tray and the plastic bottom hatch trim over the latch assembly. Remove the Phillips screw on the left rear panel as well as the chrome tie down clamp. This sounds harder than it really is. Good luck! 134002

Everything needed for a clean install is provided. The only problem I had was the quick splice wire connectors. The 2015 Subaru WRX had very small diameter wiring for the tail and brake light wires and the wire connectors would not make contact. I spliced the wires manually and everything worked fine. 135872

A perfect fit for my 2007 Volvo XC70. No hassle installation, very easy, and took less than 25 minutes start to finish. Unlike other kits, this provides complete isolation from my lighting system, so no loading that could result in system faults. No system programming required either, just plug and play. Can't buy a more compatible and quality unit than this. Perfect choice for the Volvo XC70! 728645

When we buy a new vehicle, we always purchase the trailer hitch and wiring harness from etrailer. Your website is extremely easy to navigate and make a purchase. Only one complaint. Two years ago I purchased a hitch and harness for my new Hyundai Tucson. The module on the harness stopped working this past spring. I had no trailer lights which made it inconvenient for when we wanted to use it. I was not happy that I had to purchase another harness and pay my mechanic to install it. I hope that the harness that I just purchased lasts a lot longer. 725174

Hitch was a breeze using a lift. Wiring package typically comes as a plug-in. This package you need to solder wires and use wrap. Not an issue but for the price, should be a plug and play. Still give trailer hitch and wiring harness 5. Less than two (2) hours to install on '04 Porsche Cayenne S. 683062

Comments

I checked the wiring harness options for your Cayenne, and at this time, there is not a plug in T-style wiring harness option available. This kit does include splice in connectors, but I understand the security of soldering your connection points.

Quick delivery. Reviews had been read prior to order and consistent with reviews, lack of provided instructions . Weather currently prevents installation so critique can only extend to positive assessment of components received. Color coding obvious and similar to previous hookups I have done. Reviews said etrailer tech helped which I may require for one variation from previous trailer wiring experiences as I add this to my Volvo C30. 590388

Product work as described. One of the wire connectors was problematic and I had to solder it instead. Also I purchased a mounting bracket from the trailer rental place for the 4 prong connect on the car end. This was to secure it to the car and it worked fine for awhile but now is loose and the connector keeps falling out of the bracket where it is to snap in. It's now wired tie to the mounting bracket. That connector should have a better design in the way it secures to any mounting bracket. Otherwise, I saved a lot of money installing your kit rather then having the rental place do the electrical work for my new hitch. 589921

This kit is good, and very complete. It would benefit from some model specific instructions, like the trailer hitches come with. The average person with no automotive background CANNOT install this on a late model car. you need to know how to remove trim panels and components - which is easy with a little instruction! 572880

Comments

This particular wiring harness isnt a vehicle specific item, it fits many different vehicles so therefore itd be very difficult to provide vehicle specific instructions for the hundreds of vehicles that it can be used on. There are some installation videos linked above showing the harness being installed on a different vehicle. The actual step-by-step process shown in the videos would be different than the procedure for your particular vehicle, but the method used for testing that determines which taillight circuit controls which function would still be very helpful.

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 Diesel, The TIPM (Power module) trailer light circuit which is a common failure. I replaced the non replaceable relays (according to factory) and still had issues. I installed the trailer light module and connected it to the vehicle lights, thus eliminating the trailer circuit all together. Now the trailer has a circuit breaker in case of overload, and automatically resets. Solved the problem without spending $750 for a new TIPM. I should have done this in the first place and it would have saved me a lot of time and trouble. etrailer folks are always knowledgeable and helpful. I received the unit ahead of promised time and it installed quite easily. 479335

My RX350 Lexus did not have a towing package, and I used this kit for getting all the trailer lights to work. It took me a little more time to make the electrical connections as I needed to probe individual wires to ensure I was connected to the correct wires. Once completed, everything worked fine and still does. Glad I did it. 401802

  • Recommended Best Trailer Hitch Receiver When Comparing Options for 2019 Honda CR-V
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76128 , the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397, and the etrailer # e98848 are all very similar. They will install in the same location on your Honda frame but they are rated for different load capacities and both of these capacity ratings greatly surpass the manufacturer towing capacity outlined in your owners manual, so I don't recommend making that the determining factor. The Curt # C13397 or the etrailer # e98848 is my recommendation...

I looked at the online version of your owner's manual and it looks like your CX-9 has a trailer weight limit of 3,500 lbs. I recommend checking out your owner's manual for towing specifications as well. When it comes to the wiring you will...

  • Recommended 4-Way Wiring Harness for 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL
  • The Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118786 is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. I recommend this kit over the harness # 119147KIT which will also work, but requires splicing instead of using the factory wiring harness quick connects located behind the driver's and passenger's side tail lights.

  • Prodigy P3 Brake Controller Installation in 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler without Tow Package
  • Brake controllers like the excellent Prodigy P3 # 90195 use the vehicle brake light switch to deliver the electrical signal that tells the controller your vehicle is braking, and from there the built-in accelerometer sensor determines the amount of braking power that needs to be sent to the trailer's brakes. This is how all proportional type brake controllers operate. They take in the triggering electrical signal from the pedal and then proportionally deliver brake power to match the rate...

  • Parts Needed to Tow U-Haul Trailer with 2018 Mazda CX-9
  • In order to tow a 5x8 U-Haul cargo trailer with your 2018 Mazda CX-9 you will need a trailer hitch, a 4-Way wiring harness, and a ball mount/hitch ball combo. There are two Class III 2 inch trailer hitch receivers available for your CX-9, the Curt # C13284 and the Draw-Tite # 76020. Both feature pretty similar designs and will use the same existing holes in the vehicle's frame but I recommend going with the Curt # C13284 because it offers a slightly more recessed (hidden) receiver and...

  • I do have a wiring harness for both vehicles but the wiring harness for a 2004 Toyota Sequoia is different than the wiring harness for a 2006 Toyota Tundra. For your Sequoia, you will want to use the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness part # HM11143384 which will give you both 4 and 7-way trailer connections. The harness offers a simple plug and play installation that will not require you to cut or splice any wires. The pigtails that will need to be used to install this harness...

  • Trailer Hitch and 7-Way Trailer Connector for a 2015 Mercedes Benz GLA250
  • You certainly can add a hitch and wiring to your 2015 Mercedes GLA250. For a trailer hitch the most popular option is Curt hitch # C13197. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver rated for 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. For wiring in order to add a 7-Way you will first have to install a 4-Way. The only harness available that does NOT require splicing into the vehicle wiring is the ZCI harness # 119250KIT. Then to add a 7-Way you will need #...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
  • It looks like you are interested in the Curt trailer hitch # C13079 for your 2017 Outlander Sport. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening. Per Curt, all non-trailer loads (bike racks, cargo carriers, etc) must be supported by stabilizing straps, such as part # 18050. For that reason I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76098. This is also a Class lll hitch with a 2-inch receiver. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball...

He was not sure if the JL model is even equipped with a factory port that a plug-in harness would connect to. You can check beneath the dash of your Jeep to see if one is present. Your only option right now will be to simply hardwire a brake controller to your Jeep. If you do not already have a...
