Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - HM48895 Review

Today we're going to review part #HM48895. This is the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit with the 4-way flat connector. This is LED compatible. This will adapt your tow vehicles 3-wire tail light system to your trailer's 2-wire tail light system. This part is designed specifically for use with tow vehicles that have LED lights. The reason that's important, it's even stamped on the converter, it says compatible with LED tail lights.

The reason that's important is because LED's will require less power to generate your light than standard halogen bulbs. For vehicles that have the LED tail lights a module like this one is required because it will send more power through your wiring harness to fully light your trailer's signals. Now this does include the 4-way flat vehicle end connector here that will plug into your trailer's 4-way flat connector. This is double bolted, weatherproof design, has corrosion resistant terminals to ensure durability, and it even has this integrated dust cap which will protect these terminals from the elements. So when you're not plugged in, just go ahead and put your dust cap over them and you can see it'll protect them.

Now this part of the wire harness will store in your trunk, cargo area, underneath your vehicle, out of harm's way. When you need it just stretch it out, plug it into your trailer. Few specs on this harness: The power is up to 2.1 amps per circuit, overall length with this all extended out is about 72". The pigtail length over here, the wires that will connect to your vehicle is about 12". The white ground wire that has the island on the end, that's about 36" long. The length on just the 4-way portion of it is about 60".

The green wire right here, the lead length on that is about 71", this will go to the right turn signal on your vehicle. So basically on these wires when you go to install them, as I mentioned, the white is for your ground, the green is for your right turn signal, yellow would be your left turn signal, the red would go to your brake light connection, and the brown is for your tail lights. That should do it for the review on part #HM48895. This is the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit with the 4-way flat connector and this is LED compatible. .

Used this on my 2017 Nissan Leaf. The wires were just long enough, and I used Posi-taps to connect them. The recommended product for my car doesn't require tapping into the car's wires, but requires running a hot wire all the way to the battery. I really didn't want to do that. My trailer has all-LED lights. The car has LED stops and tails, so not sure this setup would work well with incandescent trailer lights. 497338

Both parts were also hard to find parts which made the experience even that much better. Our customer's more than appreciated being put back in service so quickly. :) 263364

I was having problems finding the right replacement 5-wire to 4--wire converter for the custom LED brake lights/turn signals on the flatbed conversion to my Tacoma pickup. I called etrailer.com's help line and described my problem to Bridget E. She knew exactly what I needed (a converter made especially for LED brakelights/turn signals), and shipped it out right away. Two days later I had it in my hands here in Hawaii. Nice! This is a high quality converter at a good price. I am pleased with both the service and the merchandise at etrailer.com. Highly recommended! 366058

The product fooled me a bit . I thought it was from 4 wire to 5 wire , but it was 5 to 4 . Which worked out fine , on my VW Bus . The product works well and i recommend it . But make sure you don't want the 5 wires going to a 5 wire motorcycle trailer . Because the 5 wires need to connect to a European Cars 5 wire set up . 315300

All of these wiring kits use custom-fit plugs for simple installation at the truck's taillight connectors. No splicing is required for these custom kits. • Towing Capacity of a 2003 Dodge Dakota with 4.7L V8 Engine
  • The white tag inside the driver's door jamb of your 2003 Dodge Dakota does not list the gross trailer weight (GTW). However, it does list the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and the gross vehicle weight (GVW) which if you subtract the GVWR from the GCWR will give you the GTW. In order to tow a trailer with your Dakota you are going to need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. For the trailer hitch I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13280 which...

  • Which Trailer Wiring Harness for 2007 Toyota Highlander
  • The correct trailer wiring harness for your Highlander will depend on whether or not it is equipped with the tow package and the lighting set-up of the trailer you will be towing. If your Highlander has the tow package, and you will be towing a trailer with very basic lighting (one stop/turn/tail light per side) then the Tow Ready # 118248 would be a good choice. If your lighting is a bit more complex, you would need a harness with a higher rated converter like the Curt # C56107. If...

However, if the 5-Way has separate turn and brake light functions then what you need to do is cut it off and install the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit # HM48895 in its place. • Troubleshooting Low Output Voltage on Hopkins Trailer Taillight Converter Box
  • It's possible the converter has an internal short and is damaged. Or it could be possible that you have a weak ground for the converter. Most likely though the box has shorted out. They are designed to fail as a way to prevent a short in trailer wiring from making it back up to the vehicle wiring so that is what is happening. You'd want to track down the short on the trailer wiring and fix it before replacing the converter.

I do not believe that your 1995 Ford Explorer came equipped with LED-type lighting and this harness is not among those recommended for your vehicle. • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 1998 Nissan Frontier
  • For trailer wiring for your 1998 Nissan Frontier I have a much better solution for you than a universal wiring kit like the part # HM48895 that you referenced. All you have to do is install the connectors of the harnesses in line with the taillight connectors on your vehicle and the 4-way of the kit will be active and ready to go.

Try checking the wiring itself with a tester like part # 40376. If you test the motorhome wiring and confirm that the signals are present there as they should be then either your converter is damaged or it is simply the wrong one for your application.
