Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - HM48895 Review

Today we're going to review part #HM48895. This is the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit with the 4-way flat connector. This is LED compatible. This will adapt your tow vehicles 3-wire tail light system to your trailer's 2-wire tail light system. This part is designed specifically for use with tow vehicles that have LED lights. The reason that's important, it's even stamped on the converter, it says compatible with LED tail lights.

The reason that's important is because LED's will require less power to generate your light than standard halogen bulbs. For vehicles that have the LED tail lights a module like this one is required because it will send more power through your wiring harness to fully light your trailer's signals. Now this does include the 4-way flat vehicle end connector here that will plug into your trailer's 4-way flat connector. This is double bolted, weatherproof design, has corrosion resistant terminals to ensure durability, and it even has this integrated dust cap which will protect these terminals from the elements. So when you're not plugged in, just go ahead and put your dust cap over them and you can see it'll protect them.

Now this part of the wire harness will store in your trunk, cargo area, underneath your vehicle, out of harm's way. When you need it just stretch it out, plug it into your trailer. Few specs on this harness: The power is up to 2.1 amps per circuit, overall length with this all extended out is about 72". The pigtail length over here, the wires that will connect to your vehicle is about 12". The white ground wire that has the island on the end, that's about 36" long. The length on just the 4-way portion of it is about 60".

The green wire right here, the lead length on that is about 71", this will go to the right turn signal on your vehicle. So basically on these wires when you go to install them, as I mentioned, the white is for your ground, the green is for your right turn signal, yellow would be your left turn signal, the red would go to your brake light connection, and the brown is for your tail lights. That should do it for the review on part #HM48895. This is the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit with the 4-way flat connector and this is LED compatible. .

2017 Nissan Leaf

Used this on my 2017 Nissan Leaf. The wires were just long enough, and I used Posi-taps to connect them. The recommended product for my car doesn't require tapping into the car's wires, but requires running a hot wire all the way to the battery. I really didn't want to do that. My trailer has all-LED lights. The car has LED stops and tails, so not sure this setup would work well with incandescent trailer lights. 497338

I was having problems finding the right replacement 5-wire to 4--wire converter for the custom LED brake lights/turn signals on the flatbed conversion to my Tacoma pickup. I called etrailer.com's help line and described my problem to Bridget E. She knew exactly what I needed (a converter made especially for LED brakelights/turn signals), and shipped it out right away. Two days later I had it in my hands here in Hawaii. Nice! This is a high quality converter at a good price. I am pleased with both the service and the merchandise at etrailer.com. Highly recommended! 366058

The product fooled me a bit . I thought it was from 4 wire to 5 wire , but it was 5 to 4 . Which worked out fine , on my VW Bus . The product works well and i recommend it . But make sure you don't want the 5 wires going to a 5 wire motorcycle trailer . Because the 5 wires need to connect to a European Cars 5 wire set up . 315300

  • Flat Towing Wiring Kit for 2019 Chevrolet Equinox
If you have the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier you can use Roadmaster diode wiring kit # RM-15267 along with 6-pole plug # RM-910030-8 that you will install in place of the included 7-way. An article on wiring is linked to assist you with this process. If you do not have the Premier you'll instead need one of the kits shown on the linked page, such as magnetic light kit # TL21RK or bulb and socket kit # RM-152-LED.

It's possible the converter has an internal short and is damaged. Or it could be possible that you have a weak ground for the converter. Most likely though the box has shorted out. They are designed to fail as a way to prevent a short in trailer wiring from making it back up to the vehicle wiring so that is what is happening. You'd want to track down the short on the trailer wiring and fix it before replacing the converter.

  • Can a Non-Powered Trailer Wiring Harness be Used on a 2014 Ford Escape
I wouldn't say you are completely wrong. The reason that some vehicles require (or it is recommended) a powered trailer wiring harness is because modern vehicle wiring has become so then that it often times cannot handle the additional power draw from trailer lights. In other circumstances if the vehicle computer sense more draw than what its own lights draw it can cause error messages and might not allow the trailer lights to work. You mentioned that the truck is a semi truck. Does it run off of a 24 volt system? If so then that would be why you are having bad luck with converters. LED lights can run off of a lower voltage but often times they appear dimmer. We have a converter # 119192 that is rated for 4.2 amps for brake lights and turn signals and 16...

  • Are Diodes Needed when Switching Trailer and Vehicle to LED Lights
You wouldn't need diodes when using Hopkins wiring harness # HM48895 but you may need load resistors on any affected circuits.
