Video Transcript for Hopkins Endurance Trailer Wiring Harness Installation

Today on this flatbed trailer, we're going to review and install the Hopkins Endurance 4-way flat trailer wiring harness, part number HM48240. A good reason why you want to work with this wire harness is it makes a great replacement for a factory installed wire harness that got damaged from sitting around, whether it got wet and it corroded or animals started chewing the wire harness. This is an easy replacement if you're not used to doing wires. With this part number this is what you get. It's just the wire harness itself. Go ahead and look at it in a little more detail. We've got a four pull flat here with a built in cover, that covers over the top.

It's also got these curves right here, this makes for a good finger hole, help pull it apart. Also if you wanted to permanently mount it on your trailer, it's got some holes built into it. If you wanted to use a wire harness to go in between the trailer and your vehicle separately you can do that with this. On down the line you can see it's protected here with some blue material. And then we have a white wire here with a green terminal.

That's for ground. This is very important to install your ground wire, it takes the ground from your vehicle onto your trailer. This is described as a Y-harness because it goes in a Y shape and you notice that there's two different wires. There's one here that has a yellow stripe, and we have one that's all brown. The yellow stripe is going to be your left turn signal and your brake light, and the brown wire here is going to be your running light circuit. If we take a look at the other side, you notice there's a green stripe here and another brown wire. This wire harness is actually designed to go down both sides of your trailer.

It makes things a little but easier to work with when you wire up your trailer. Now one other thing to know about the wire harness is the overall length is going to be about twenty feet and our ground-wire length is going to be thirty-six inches. Okay, now to install it I like to start at the front of the trailer and work our way back. I'll take the wire harness and hold it out about where I'd want to have it so I have enough room to go out to our truck or car, enough to work with it and make some turns. I'm actually holding my ground-wire too so I know where to put my ground at. To install my ground I'm going to use a self-tapping screw. I'll be using a number ten size screw that uses a five sixteenths nut driver.

I'll have to drill that first and then install the ground screw. With the ground installed we go ahead and start routing our wires. Every trailer is going to be a little bit different, in this case we're kind of luck to where we've got a little tube here to run our wires through. We'll start off running both sides of wires together and then we'll go ahead and split them apart a little bit further down in the frame. All right. Now you might run into a situation where it's got a hole made into the frame of the trailer, just like that. You're going to pull the wires through and at a certain point, you'll go ahead and use the Y feature for our wire harness so you'll have our green wire going to our right side and our yellow going to our left side. Just have them going down the sides of the trailer from here on out. At this point we have our wires for the left hand side ran to our taillight. Now I'll take a few moments to do the same thing for the other side of our trailer. All right. Now once you're satisfied with the routing of your wires, it might be a good idea to go ahead and address some of the issues where you have some wires hanging down like this. You can also use a loom clamp to help hold it in place. Very simple clamp, we're using part number A0500. It's a little bit oversized for our purpose here, but if you upgrade your trailer to something that has electric brakes, you're going to need some of that extra room to accommodate the extra wires. We're just using a self-tapping screw going into the bottom edge of below the deck. Let's go ahead and make our connections to our left turn signal here. It's convenient for our light here, we have our matching wire colors. We have brown for our running light circuit and yellow for our left turn and brake light circuit. All I have to do is go ahead and cut it to the right length. I like to add a little bit extra loop of wire in there, so when you have to change the light or if it gets damaged or has to be upgraded, then you have some extra wire to work with and make a new connection. We'll cut the length, then we'll split the two wires back. Now we'll go ahead and strip the wires and get them ready. Do the same thing for the wires from our taillight. To hold bigger wire connections, we're going to use some heat shrink butt connectors from inaudible 00:05:14 we're using part number DW05743-10. These we're designed for eighteen to twenty-two gauge wire. So that give you a good idea of what size wire we're working with today on our wire harness. We'll take our butt connectors and put them in place of wires and crimp them down. We'll go ahead and hook these up to our taillight. Remember the wire with the yellow stripe is the left turn so that'll go to the yellow wire here or whatever is marked left turn on your taillight. After our wires are connected up we'll apply heat to shrink up the ends of our connector and it will seal them up for good. I'm using a heat gun to apply the heat to our butt connectors, yes you can use a cigarette lighter or a barbecue lighter, but with this one you can be a lot more direct and you won't have to worry about actually burning the butt connector. Give me a few moments while these are cooling off and then we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the other side of the trailer. Same thing when you get on the other side here. Brown to brown, and our green will go to our turn signal circuit on our light. inaudible 00:06:31 to tie our excess together. All right, with our initial wiring connections made to our taillight, we'll go ahead and apply power check them. First we'll go ahead and try our running light circuit and then we'll try our turn signal circuit. Now that we've proved that our wire harness is working correctly for our taillights, that will finish it for a simple install for a wire harness. However, if you want to add some additional side marker lights to your wire harness, it's very simple. All you have to do is make your attachments to your brown wire that's run down both sides of the trailer. And that will finish it for the Hopkins Endurance 4-way flat trailer connector, part number HM48240.

better than it needs to be Wiring harness is nicely assembled, with an anti abrasion sleeve on the end, nie weather cap for the connector, grounding lug is already attached. It even includes attachment screw for grounding lug, and terminal grease to help fight corrosion. My dog ate the head off of my old harness and it was cheaper to replace the entire harness than to splice and curse and add assorted parts. This harness is COMPLETE, and will really do the trick. Quick delivery, reliable people..Etrailer.com. 5360

This is an excellent alternative to purchasing the 4 way connector alone. All leads are built into the connector, which means you don't have deal with that part of the installation process. The ground wire has a good length to it, with the screw end circle easily fastened to the trailer. The length of the other wiring allows for you to completely rewire a small trailer like the one that I've replaced. I recommend this product if you're looking for a hassle free replacement or upgrade of your existing trailer wiring system. 120085

Before I start I want you all to know I am not good at anything with wires or water, period. I had an old 4x8 trailer that needed to be re-wired. I was not looking forward to screwing it up which was inevitable If I touched it. But, I need the trailer for the July 4th weekend so by chance I ran across your site. I found the video on how-to rewire a trailer. Though you made it look easy *I* would be attempting this! Okay, the project took a bit of time since I questioned everything twice (about an hour) but I have to say, IT WAS NO PROBLEM re-wiring the trailer. The 4-way trailer harness is much better than the harness I had on it and the whole project was actually fun to do (and I hate this type of stuff). I love the quality and really love the connector 'cap', even though the trailer is garage kept. Thanks for the products and the video assistance, it was easy because of you! 84151

this company had an excellent price and service was top notch. items were not only shipped the same day, they were shipped immediatelly following the order, and arrived a few days later. thank you for the great service i will probably use the website again for other trailer parts. 32656

the wire harness is exactly as described. the only thing i dont like about it is the thin insulator around the wires. wires on trailers are constantly rubbing on something, and this harness is lacking good insulation. it looks similar to cheap speaker wire. i bought a roll of split loom to put the wire in. plug appears to be nice and sturdy. iv only plugged it in once to make sure might lights work....but it looks like it should be fine. 4 out of 5 stars. 26162

  • How to Wire In Side Marker Lights to Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Harness # HM48240
  • The Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Harness, # HM48240, is a wishbone style trailer wiring harness. This means that the running light signal is split at the plug and there are two separate wires, one ran with the right turn/brake green wire and the other ran with the left turn/brake yellow wire. It does not come with additional wiring for side marker lights. If you were to wire in side marker lights, you would tap into the wire with the brown stripe for either side.
