Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring HM47210 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number Hm47210. This is the Hopkins endurance quick qnstall 7-way trailer connector with a universal pigtail harness for the vehicle end. The 7-blade, RV-style trailer connector for your vehicle is a pretty simple install. The pigtail harness just simply hardwires into the truck's existing wiring, and the 7-way connector flows directly into our harness. You just push them together after you've got them lined up right, until you hear them click into place. You do want to be sure that you match up your wires to the correct wires on your vehicle.

The white is going to be our ground wire. Yellow is going to be our left turn. Green is going to be our right turn. Brown is going to be our tail light. Red is going to be the auxiliary power lead.

Blue is going to be our electric break, and purple is going to be the back up or reverse light. The lid does open 180 degrees for easy connections. It's also going to help keep out dirt and moisture. This does have enhanced weather proofing with the internal seals and currosion-resistant terminals. It comes from a durable, AVS plastic with an over-sized lid hinge. The mounting screws and the grease are included.

Our mounting screws are separated by an inch-and-a-half here on the side, and two-and-one-quarter inches here on the bottom. You're going to have a mounting of one-and-a-half-inch by two-and-a-quarter-inch. That's going to complete today's review of part number Hm47210, the Hopkins Endurance quick install 7-way trailer connector. .

Overall, I was very impressed by this connector. I used it as an in-bed connector for my gooseneck trailers. The plug seems to be a quality product, engineered to stand up to some abuse. I like how the mounting bolt heads recess into the connector and also how the bottom of the connector is elongated to help support the weight of the plug and wiring. I think it has a great shot at lasting for a very long time. The hinge is predominately plastic that will not corrode and break like the many I've had in the past. 100800

Although I have just installed this I believe it to be very good quality and it should last a long time based on my inspection of it. Be sure to order a mounting bracket if you don't already have one as this unit doesn't come with a bracket. Hopkins bracket part # is 48615. I like the fact that the harness plugs into the connector instead of having to strip and connect every wire into the connector individually. That should help inhibit corrosion which is the #1 cause of trailer electrical issues and it makes things much easier if I have to replace the connector later. 168220

I had the loose wire pigtail already under my f250 sd. I clipped the factory sealant off the end of the wires on the truck, stripped em back and attached with heat seal butt connectors. You will need the blue and yellow connectors as the factory wires are different gauges. Etrailer has excellent how-to videos and detailed information about all their products it seems. It made buying and installing the right parts a breeze. They do the homework for you, their prices are better than most other online retailers and they ship fast. They earned my repeat business. 327610

I have purchased from etrailer several times and the products have always been as described. They ship fast and the products are packaged well. I hit my wiring harness on a log and needed to replace it. etrailer was less money then the auto stores and I did not have to drive 28 miles into Durango and back. Gas prices make online purchases great. Thank You for being in business. Charlie S Vallicito, Colorado 148499

This connector is just want I was looking for. It gives me a way to power my trailer via an external battery. I have attached battery clips to the leads. The construction is solid, and the documentation for each lead is excellent. For my cargo trailer, I use the lead for the running lights. For my travel trailer, I use the lead called accessories, I think. 376287

Exactly what I needed for less than half the price a local dealer quoted for purchase ($44, not including installation! He also wouldn't sell me just the kit, for the kit with installation he wanted over $100!) Do it yourself and save a bundle - make a few simple wire connections and plug and go - etrailer.com makes it quick and easy! Shipping is prompt. 98318

works just as intended. Install was easy, I did not use the included bracket because it would hang below the bumper. I mounted it inside the well on the bumper where you would put a bumper hitch. It is used only about once a month. I did have to run a brake controller wire because my truck was not equipped with it. 13 f150 xl 422060

Quick and easy to install. Just splice wires( I use the shrink type connectors). No messing around trying to get wires under screws. And if the plug connector ever gets broke, all you have to replace is the connector. The wires are in a waterproof housing that unplugs from connector. 158313

Well made product. Will need to purchase mounting hardware and splicing material. Wire colors matched standard chevrolet wire colors with the exception of the backup/reverse which is purple on the pigtail vice light green on my truck. 430442

Work great. Just wish truck driver would quit moving the wires so that the plug pulls out and breaks the plastic. Easy to replace once the back plug is wired. 123648

The Curt Q20 with R20 slider hitch arrived just as promised in 3 days after placing the order. The Q20 head box was totally destroyed. The manufacture packaging was not made to ship individually using small package carrier such as UPS. Upon inspection I discovered that the bolts and washers were missing. I contacted Bill at E-trailer and told him. He explained that the replacements would have to come from the manufacturer and would take several days. I told him that I already scheduled an install and really needed those bolts and washers. He was able to round some up for me and shipped them out next day and they arrived on Monday just as promised. I also spoke with Bill about not being able to remove the head unit for the hitch. It needed to be removed to be able to install it on the slider. It seemed to be stuck and I could not budge it. I assumed that it may have been damaged in shipping, especially after receiving it in a demolished box. He explained to me that since it was new its tolerances were tight and I might try taking a pry bar to it. Well that did not make me feel real good. He was totally correct. Just a little more effort with a pry bar moved it just enough for the bushing to squeak loose and the head came right out. I am disappointed in the jaws on this unit. They look like they were forged by a 3rd grader. Not smooth and somewhat pitted. They are not machined jaws for sure. Had it all installed using the new Reese rail brackets for the 2017 F250. Everything went smooth. An added plus is the quiet ride when not connect to trailer. Can’t even notice the hitch is back there. My other hitch rattled and clanked all the time and was so annoying. I just hooked my 38ft 5th wheel for the first time. It was smoother and easier than any other hitch I have ever used. I bought the sider unit which is recommended by all for the short bed. However I cannot use the slider as the king pin box slides too close to the tall tail gate. The new 2017 F250 is taller and the bed is deeper so I needed a hitch that would go up to 19 ½ inches. I will update after a my first run with trailer later this month. Everyone at E-trailer was outstanding. 5 Star. I will keep using them in the future. 303440

Exactly what I needed. The Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel 90-Degree Harness is truly plug 'n play. Once you decide on the truck bed location for the new 7-pole plug and drill the hole the rest is simply snap together and you're done. The new harness fit perfectly with the factory 7-pin connector and had plenty of length to allow for the new plug to be mounted conveniently in the truck bed wall. No more cable hanging out over the tailgate. 95342

Comments

I have used the Hopkins Endurance 90-degree harness monthly over past year since installation. I have also used the factory bumper 7-pole plug as my towing needs required. Both connectors work every time indicating a solid fit and good contact between the factory 7-pin connector and the added Hopkins Endurance connector. Very pleased with both ease of installation and performance.

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

Bought this harness for our new Ram 3500. The local RV repair place wanted $250.00 to splice into my truck's harness, but I elected to get this custom harness. Gave me an excuse to buy a hole saw, and after watching the video, I was able to successfully install the harness in a little less than an hour. The connections are solid, the cable was easy to route, and the end result is cosmetically and functionally excellent. The harness was long enough to be able to choose among several routing paths. I was happy that they included dielectric grease, and was also happy that I had a stash of self-tapping screws in my parts box, because one wasn't included in the product package. You need a self-tapping screw to attach the ground to the truck frame. This could result in a trip to the hardware store if you don't happen to have some sitting around. The other item you will need is some longer zip ties. The ones included in the package are small, suitable for tying to a small hose, another wiring bundle, or an existing frame mounting point, but having longer ties will make the job easier, especially if you need to get creative with routing. As always, great service from etrailer.com. It is a real pleasure to deal with these folks. 202738

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

I bought this harness a couple of months ago, but being winter, I am just now getting outside to install it. The item appears to work exactly as described. The instructions could be more detailed. For instance there is a white wire with a screw connection hole which was not mentioned at all in the instructions. I assumed it to be a ground wire and grounded it to the frame of my truck. But the 90 degree aspect of the harness is great. It let me put it in a tighter spot. It probably took me a total of less than an hour to install it. What instructions there were, were accurate and made it simple. I plugged our 5th wheel into the new outlet and all was good. Then plugged the 5th wheel into the outlet at the back of the truck where the original connection was. Also good. So I have an in bed connection for the 5th wheel and a below the tailgate connection for a bumper pull. Could not be happier. Well, actually, I am happier about something than the item. I am extremely happy about my dealings with Etrailer. It shipped almost instantly and arrived sooner than I could have imagined. As it turns out, I was not in a hurry (obviously), but I could have been. And if I had been, it would have been awesome to have gotten my item that quickly. Thanks guys/gals. 172847

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

I purchased the Hopkins wire harness 48265 based on positive reviews. This is going on a vintage camper trailer that we rebuilt the back end. The back sheet metal that the tail lights mount to was replaced with new sheetmetal. Old wiring was routed to back and new sheet metal was installed, then lights were wired. I wanted to use a sheet of silicon seal on tail lights and that causes a grounding issue. So now ground wires will have to be run to frame. Since back sheet metal has to come back off, decided it was time to replace the wire system. Since it is hard to get at the wiring for the tail lights, it was important for me that I use a quality harness. This harness had the 18 gauge wire with 16 gauge for ground. Some harnesses were 20 gauge wire and reviews for those was described as cheap and concerns that it wouldn't last but a few years. Everything I read about the Hopkins 48265 was positive. If the wire set is as good as the quick attention I received fron Etrailer, I m sure it will be 5 star. Thanks to the people at Etrailer. Kev 336902

I bought this socket for my 2006 Volvo Xc90 to wire in the 4-Pole harness I also purchased from etrailer. Already had a few 7 Blade to 4-Pole adapters from my previous vehicle, and wanted the option of adding a trailer brake wire for a small camper later on so that was the main reason for the purchase. It also went very well with the Hidden Hitch I had already installed, bracket mounted right up to the existing tabs on the hitch. Super quick and easy install, as all of my etrailer purchases have been. Looks great on the truck, and functions great with the 180 Degree cover. 432535

I received the Quick-Install 7-Way Trailer Connector pretty quick. I had ordered one through another source, but had to return it because it was the wrong one. Then I searched on google and found etrailer.com. After a little bit of searching on their site, I found this connector. They had great pictures and they were accurately-sized so I could see that the attachment holes to the frame of my 2005 Fleetwood Discovery RV would line up exactly. It matched up perfectly and installed in just a few minutes. The package was missing one nut, but that was no big deal as I quickly found a replacement. 223030

Worked for me. I used the six wire even though I only hooked up 4 for the toad. The RV 7 blade allowed me to bring a power lead to the toad if I ever need it for charging or power the Aux Brake unit. The bracket could be rotated in any direction and I found the best way was to rotate 90 degrees and install to the base plate. My toad grill made for a tight fit for both break-a-way switch and light connector, but they fit side by side with the addition of an L bracket for the break-a-way. The wiring connections seemed solid and water tight. Wired correct 1st time, No Problems. 80814

I could not find a 7 round with a 5 flat connector anywhere in San Diego. Most of the people I spoke with at trailer shops or RV stores said no one makes it only with a 4 flat connector. I just kept looking because I needed one with a 5 flat for my boat and didn't want to keep using my adaptor. I found etrailer and the rep I spoke with was very knowledgeable and said he had exactly what I was looking for and it was a great price. I will be always using etrailer for my trailer parts for now on. Thank you, Vito Lotta - San Diego 144089

I installed this plug and it was extremely easy and a very clean install. I wanted to use this unit because it did not require any splicing which can cause issues with the ITBC. It was only one 2-1/8 hole to drill and 4 self tapping screws and it was installed. I am very happy with this piece and would recommend it to anyone needing an in bed plug. 216893

This plug works great once it is wired in. The only problem I have with it is that it does not receive the wire in a way that makes it easy to assemble, and I'm talking about the housing at the rear of the plug. The connection points are very easy to make up. Once you finally get it all together. It is very durable and weather proof. 60183

Appears to be high quality components and materials. Included almost everything necessary, including grease to seal the connections. Liked the hex recess for the screw heads molded into the receptacle body. Would have been nice to include Nyloc nuts - Was concerned about tightening the screws enough to make the lock washers work while not damaging the plastic. Used Locktite instead. 96960

etrailer gave excellent service. Shipping was prompt. Email followup was excellent. I needed a part to hook up to a Silverado 3500 with the wires to the bed already there (taped up at the front of the bed on the driver side) and didn't want to tap into the existing plug on the bumper. The L Shaped bracket is easily detachable so that the plug can be screwed directly into the sheet metal of the truck bed once a hole is cut. However 2 things....the unit comes with nuts and bolts so get ready for a trip to Home Depot to get some sheet metal screws of some sort for most installs in the bed. Second, the holes that the screws must go in are hex shaped which is great for the bolts that come with the unit but not for sheet metal screws so be sure and get screws with a small enough head to countersink into the holes or with a big enough base so as not to sink into the hex shaped holes. 103078

Before I start I want you all to know I am not good at anything with wires or water, period. I had an old 4x8 trailer that needed to be re-wired. I was not looking forward to screwing it up which was inevitable If I touched it. But, I need the trailer for the July 4th weekend so by chance I ran across your site. I found the video on how-to rewire a trailer. Though you made it look easy *I* would be attempting this! Okay, the project took a bit of time since I questioned everything twice (about an hour) but I have to say, IT WAS NO PROBLEM re-wiring the trailer. The 4-way trailer harness is much better than the harness I had on it and the whole project was actually fun to do (and I hate this type of stuff). I love the quality and really love the connector 'cap', even though the trailer is garage kept. Thanks for the products and the video assistance, it was easy because of you! 84151

The female connector is attached to the swing arm of a motorcycle to provide lighting lighting for a trailer pulled by the motorcycle. This means that there is likely much more movement in the harness than for an automotive application. I've never had a problem with any part of the harness. I found this product to be exactly what I wanted, well made and easy to install. The protective cap functions well as it remains pliable (flexible) after a year of use, and while it has never fallen off in use, it is easy enough to remove before making the connection. It has done the perfect job of keeping mud and other detritus out of the contacts. The recessed nut holders also function well and is one of the reasons I chose this wiring kit. This wiring kit gets high regard and recommendation from me. All of my purchases from etrailer have been solid products delivered at reasonable cost. 247083

This product its awesome !!! After a silly mistake on my end I broke the OEM Connector on my 13' Mercedes GL450, called the dealer and was told the connector doesn't sell individual and I had to order the Towing Kit (Over $900 !!!) decided to take my chances on aftermarket products. Began by ordering part# PK11893-11933 from etrailer.com only to discover that the mentioned part worked fine but it didn't fit properly on the OEM Bracket (You had to drill new holes) when taking the plug out to disconnect it I broke the pin so sadly I couldn't sent it back for a refund. Still, I was determinate to find a perfect fit, so I ordered this part from etrailer.com and this time I got it right. The part fit perfectly and you can even use the stock screws, also the part its rugged and you can tell its a great quality product. Very happy with my purchase. Thanks etrailer.com 180394

How good is free shipping, our Order was placed about 8pm est on Thursday Jan 19th, and arrived Jan 25th before I returned from work at 4pm. Just sold the F-150 I installed the previous B&W fifth wheel hide a ball hitch in. Love this hitch set up, after arriving at a campground and unhooking the camper I have FULL use of the truck bed. Install of round two begins in the morning, directions are simple and easy to understand. George J from E-trailer has been keeping me updated with information about my delivery status and made himself available had I had any questions. Wife and I have been camping for about four years, on our second RV and now our third truck and have been totally satisfied ordering everything we needed from E-trailer over that time, (about 18-20 orders to date) adding to the great products E-trailer provides is the HOW TO DIY videos on many products. 338589

Comes with documentation about wiring and a grease packet to put on the contacts to prevent corrosion. Wires are black with a colored stripe for identification per the documentation in the package. 94229

Good sealed connector. Having the functions marked on each wire is great...no worry about color coding differences between different vintagesmodels of trailers or vehicles.

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

I loved the concept of a robust RV style plug with holder. Unfortunately the design is flawed to three different failure modes. My trailer has the heavy duty, 7 conductor wire used in larger trucks. 1) The first failure occurred by using a too small a screw to hold the sides together. It's design is split down the middle with only the center screw to hold it together. Rain easily gets inside the connector as the split shell design is too thin and opens up at the slightest change of cable angle. 2) The screw strips easily as well. 3) The blade connectors inside the plug are not well retained and can slip back into the connector. This is especially exciting with the ground wire, as trailer brakes are important going down hill. I would not recommend this product and replaced mine with a cheaper, more robust design that I have used over the years. 426018

I received the product quickly and in perfect condition the packing was excellant. I installed the connector easily and quickly. I consulted the Gm wiring diagram and als found the wires for all the 7 connections. I had a tight spot within the bumper edge, but managed to find short bolts to attach the bracket in old exsisting holes. The rest was easy attaching the connectors and making sure all wires were through the rear enclosure and tightening them down. I tested the 4 wire connector with my boat trailer lights and it worked like it was designed to do. I LOVE the versatility of this connector. Thanks etrailer.com!! Great product at a great price. 14869

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

Installed the Hopkins muti-tow 7, 5, and 4 way flat connector this morning. I ripped the original connector that was attached to the bottom of the hitch receiver off when I was 4-wheeling into the Doll House campgrounds in the Maze District of Canyonlands a month ago. So, I cut a hole in the bumper and mounted the new Hopkins connector, cut off the old broken connector mounting bracket, and connected the factory wiring to the new Hopkins device. Hopkins product installed easily, looks great, is now out of the way, and has the flexibility of multiple trailer connectors when required. I am pleased with the product. Attached is a photo. 133981

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

Wow what a fantastic experience! It first started when I called to verify I was buying the right 5th wheel wiring kit for my 2009 Dodge Ram 2500. Nicky K was the salesperson that helped me out, she took the time to verify my order and she placed the order for me at that point, I chose the two day delivery option and it arrived on time as she promised. The endurance professional grade 5th wheel wiring kit part # 42137 was so easy that it took me only 45 minutes to install from start to finish, and most of that time was Running the wire from the bed location to the back of the truck where the factory 7 pin receiver is located. this kit is truly plug and play!! If I could do this in this amount of time and not have any problems then anyone can do it. I would definitely recommend this company and this product to all my family and friends. 217333

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2015 Ford Expedition
  • First check under your 2015 Ford Expedition for a round connector, perhaps in the vicinity of the frame rail or spare tire, that could plug into the round connector on 4- and 7-Way # C55774. If that connector is present under the vehicle then you just have to plug it into the 20119 and then mount the connector. If you do not have that connector but have a 4-Way then you will have to hardwire in the 7-Way and brake controller using # ETBC7.

  • How to Wire Up a Motorhome 7-Way with a Separate Circuit to a 7-Way with Combined Circuit
  • The # RM-732 is the correct adapter to use to go from a separate taillight system like what you have on your motorhome to a combined system like what is on your tow dolly. For wiring your motorhome with a 7-way you would basically want to follow the wiring directions that are on top of the converter. The right side of the converter is the input side so you will need to test the wiring of your RV with a circuit tester like part # 3808 to determine function and wire it accordingly. You'll...

  • Compatibility of Hopkins 7-Way # HM47210 With # 41157 Gooseneck/Fifth Wheel Wiring Harness
  • It sure would. The Pigtail of the # HM47210 unplugs from the pigtail, and the # 41157 would plug inline between the pigtail and the 7-way connector as shown in the photo I've edited for you. If you click the provided link, you can see the # 41157 being installed on a 2011 Ram truck.

  • What are the Mounting Hole Dimensions for Hopkins Endurance Quick-Install 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled Hopkins 7-Way # HM47210 from the warehouse to measure it for you. From side to side the mounting holes are 2-1/4 inches apart on center. And from top to bottom they are 1-1/2 inches apart on center. I have included a picture and a video for you.

  • Replacement for 7-way Trailer Connector Adapter Included w/ ETBC7 Brake Controller Install Kit
  • The easiest replacement would be to replace the 7-way used in the # ETBC7 kit, which is # 37185. You could use the Curt # C58000 bracket if need be, but I'd recommend going with the Hopkins # HM47210 7-way instead. The # HM48480 you referenced doesn't include a pigtail, so it wouldn't work for you. If you click the provided link, you can view a video that explains the wire color codes.

  • Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 1999 Explorer w/ 12-Volt Power Circuit for Trailer Battery
  • To install a 7-way trailer connector on your Explorer, you'd first need a functioning 4-pole. If you don't have a 4-pole, you can install one using part # 118345. At this point, you'll need to decide if you need the 7-way to provide the lighting and battery circuits only to the trailer, or if you need to install a brake controller on the Explorer as well. If you just need the lighting and battery feed circuit, you can use an adapter like part # 37185. The adapter would plug into your...

  • Trailer Brakes Locking When Lights Turned On
  • This isn't the first time I've heard of this type of issue. It sounds like the functions of your trailer wiring are not synced with your truck. Because you have used two trucks, the issue appears to be with the trailer. I've attached a picture to help, because I think your brakes on your trailer are being connected to the running light function on your truck. There also could be a short between these two circuits because they are side by side. If that is the case, replace the connectors...

  • Converting a Semi 7-Way Trailer Connector to an RV 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • There are a number of factors involved when converting a semi 7-way to an RV 7-way. Semis generally use a 7-pin round pin socket, similar to # PK11720. And RV style 7-way uses blades, like # PK12706. We do not offer any pre-made adapters to make this conversion that will carry all of the electrical functions required by the RV. Another thing to be aware of is fifth wheel trailers use a combined wiring system where the brake lights and turn signals are on circuit. Your semi connector...

  • Replacing a 13 Pin European Trailer Connector with a US Connector a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500
  • If your 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 had a factory 7-way trailer connector before the Euro connector was installed then there should be a port under the bumper at the rear of the truck. It looks like the picture I've attached. If you have that port (and it works) you can just plug # 20135 for a 7-way and 4-way connector. If you don't have that port on your truck it's either been removed or the truck didn't come with the factory tow package. All of the functions should be there for the 13...

  • For a 7-way for your truck you would want the Hopkins 7-Way part # HM47210. This would work well with the camper's 7-way. For the 12 volt circuit you would want to run a 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) through a 40 amp circuit breaker like part # PK54540 to the positive post of your vehicle battery.
