Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 36345 Review

Today we're going to review Part Number 36345. This is the Hopkins Negative Input Short Proof Power Converter Wiring Harness. This wiring harness will hardware into your vehicles wiring harness and provide a four way at the back of your vehicle to provide lighting on your trailer. This is designed for vehicles that are equipped with independent bulb turn signals or the common bulb system. This is designed for vehicles with a negative power input, like the Ford Thunderbird, the Ford Windstar, the Lincoln LS. This does power up to 8 amp capacity per function and it does receive the power directly from the vehicles battery.

The power converter right here has circuit protection which is included in this weatherproof double molded design. The circuit protection will guard the tow vehicle and the converter itself from trailer shorts. It is self-resetting. It does provide for brighter bulbs. Now this part includes everything shown here on the table. It does supple some length of 12 gauge power lead wire, the end line fuse holder, the 20 amp fuse itself, some wire taps, a grounding screw if needed, some terminal grease and some cable ties to take up any access wiring.

Also a dust cover that is designed to go onto the, you can install this on the four-way so when you're not plugged into a trailer, it installs just like that. When you're not, you can just put the dust cap on and doing that will help protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements. Basically, the way that you would go to install this is you would go to the back of the vehicle. Now these wires right here, the brown, the yellow, the red and the green, these are all designed to be tapped into, using the wire tapes into your vehicles wiring harness. Basically, your brown would be tapped into your taillights.

We do required that you would need to use a circuit tester. You don't want to go color by color. You want to use a circuit tester to test the function that you're going to tap these into, but your brown would tap into your taillight function. Your yello9w would be for your left turn, or your driver's turn signal. The red would be for your brakes and the green would be for your right turn signal, your passenger's side. That's why you've got a little bit more length of wire.

Your converter, you pretty much install on the driver's side. Run your length of bonded wire that the four-ways connected to out the back to plug into your trailer. When you're not using it, you can just roll it up and keep it in the back there. Now the two remaining wires you can see here. The larger gauge wires, the white wire you can see has an islet on it. That's made to connect to a good clean ground. If you have a screw that's already grounded on your vehicle you can use this and connect to it. If you need to make a ground, they do include this grounding screw. Then the other wire is the red power wire. This needs to go to the battery in your vehicle, so they give you this extra length of wire to run up to the front of your vehicle. What you would do is just tap one end of the length of wire onto this power wire from the converter. Run this up to the front again using the cable ties that take up any slack. Once you get up to the front before you connect this to the battery, what you're going to do is run it through this end line fuse holder so you connect it to that side. Then this islet would connect to the positive post of your battery. Then before you use your wiring harness, what you want to do is open it up, take your 20 amp fuse, install it into your fuse holder, put the cap back on. Now you're wiring harness would be already to go. Again, when you make any connections wiring wise they do recommend to put some Dielectric grease on it, like on these terminals to help prevent any corrosion. That should do it for the review on Part Number 36345. This is the Hopkins Negative Input Short Proof Power Converter Wiring Harness. .

  • Towing a Trailer with Separate Turn Signals and Brake Lights with a 2005 Ford Super Duty
There are special adapters that will take the combined brake and turn signals coming from the tow package wiring on your truck and separate them out so you can keep the separate brake lights and turn signals on the trailer. For that you can use # C56196. On the input side the white wire is ground, green is combined right turn signal and brake light, and yellow is combined left turn signal and brake light. On the output side you will have green for right turn signal only, yellow for left...

  • Wiring Harness Recommendation For 2004 Ford Thunderbird With Low-Side-Switching
To be able to install a trailer connector on your 2004 Thunderbird you will need wiring like part # 36345 that is specifically designed for your wiring. This is a hardwire installation. We do not offer a plug-and-play option. I found that your Thunderbird has what is called 'low-side-switching'. When installing this harness you will need to use a circuit tester with reverse polarity. Unfortunately we do not offer these but you should be able to find that item at a local hardware store....

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 1957 Chevy Pickup Truck
The first thing to determine is why the other converters stopped working so soon. Modern converters are designed to work on 12 volt systems with a negative ground. Many older vehicles used a 6 volt system and/or positive ground electrical system. Make sure that the 1957 Chevy Pickup truck is a 12 volt, negative ground system. It is also possible that the trailer has enough lights to overdraw the converters. Converters have amperage ratings and if exceeded that can cause them to blow....

  • 2002 Thunderbird Trailer Wiring
This product is hardwired into the existing lighting circuits on your Thunderbird. The power is delivered on the negative (low side) of the circuit, instead of the positive side typically found in automotive wiring. This converter is more expensive due to the unusual nature of the wiring system found on the vehicle.
