Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

Today on our 1997 Chevrolet Lumina, we will be installing the current vehicle wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector. Park number C58044. The first step in installing the wire harness we will have to open the trunk. Go ahead and open that up. Then we will remove the mounting hardware for the tail lights. Pull those back to get to the wiring behind it.

You don't have to disconnect the tail lights because we will be using quick splice connectors behind them. You just want to pull the tail lights off and test the wires behind it to figure out which wire is your turn signal, break, which one is your running light on each side. Here on the driver's side we'll go ahead and undo this tie down point here in the trunk. That'll allow you to take the carpet here in the trunk and fold this down out of the way. Pull this down and you'll see there's two more mounting locations for the tail light.

Go ahead and undo these thumb screws. That'll allow you to pull the tail light out away from the vehicles. Go ahead and sit these thumb screws aside and we will be re installing these. Go ahead and repeat the same process here on the passenger side for this tail light. For applications that you want the four flat wiring to be store in your trunk, you an go ahead and tap into the wiring right here in this wiring harness.

For us and this application we want the four pull outside of the vehicle next to the hitch so we are going to go ahead and run it behind the tail lights to the outside. Since inaudible 00:01:38 you can't get your four flat wiring through there to splice into this wiring so if you do want to keep it inside you can go ahead and test this wire bundle as your wires for the driver's side run through here over here to the outside. So you can keep everything nice and tidy on the inside if you want to run your wires like that. Now go ahead and take our tail light, slide it out, flip it over til you see the factory wiring for the light right here. Go ahead and take our tester and test the wires to figure out which one is the driver's side turn signal and break and which one is the running lights circuit. Go ahead and grab our test light and let somebody get in the vehicle and turn the blinker, running lights, and break lights on and test the wiring.

So go ahead and peel back some of this plastic wire loom. We use the brown wire to test it. So you see we get a constant signal so that'll be our running light circuit. The brown wire. We'll turn our blinker. Test the yellow wire. So you can see that's the blinker. And we'll test the brake signal. That's also the yellow signal. So we can go ahead and put our yellow wire and our wiring harness, yellow wire on this side, and the brown wire and the wiring harness to the brown wire on this side. We are gonna go ahead and put a little ring terminal on it and ground it here to the sheet metal instead of tapping into the ground on the lights. That'll just give us a little better ground here on the inside. Go over to the passenger side and find the passenger side turn signal and break. I had to cut away some of this factory tape that's on the loom to get access to the wire to test it. Just be careful not to damage the wires when your cutting this tape away. Go ahead and test the green wire on this side. For our blinker. So the green wire will be the passenger side turn signal and break signal. So our wire harness will match color for color on each side. So go ahead and take out wire hardness here. We need to go ahead and pull the green wire away from these since this will be running to the passenger side. Pull it all the way down across so we can run that outside. With out four flat that will also be ran to the outside. These three wires will stay on the driver's side. Also go ahead and split the white wire away just a little bit so we can have some working room when new put our ground wire onto it. Go ahead and strip that back and put a small ring terminal onto it. It's not included in the kit but you can pick those up at your local auto parts store. So go ahead and take the white wire and strip that back. Our ring terminal, crimp that into position and fold. Make sure you have a good crimp to keep that in place. We are gonna use our quick splice connectors that come with the kit to attach these two wires and our green to the factory wiring. Go ahead and again just strip those back just a little bit so you have some working work. I'm gonna attach these to the wires. Now we're gonna do, start running out wires we gonna go ahead and take our driver's side tail lights and pull it down out of the way. When your pull it our you can't see the ground on the outside so we're going to take out four flat wiring and run that out to the outside of the vehicle. Take that and drop that down into position. That'll come on down on the outside of the bumper. We'll keep our yellow, brown, and white wire on this side. We'll go ahead and take out green wire and also tuck that down because we will be running that on the outside to the passenger side light. Now that we have these two wires on this side, go ahead and grab the quick splice connector that comes with the kit. When you do our driver's side turn and break signal first, which will be the yellow wire, slide our quick slice connector. Pop our quick splice connector onto our factory wiring. We'll bring our new wiring harness in position. Run that wire into there. Grab a pair of pliers. Crimp that down. Go ahead and close that. Get a good connection. Give it a little pull. Make sure you have a good connection between those two wires. We'll go ahead and move onto the brown wire. Another quick splice connector. Pop that onto the brown wire. Take our new brown wire. Put that in our quick splice connector. Crimp that down. Once you have a good connection. Go ahead and click that. Then our last connection here on the driver's side we'll just take a self tapping screw and go ahead and ground our wire right here. Now for our last testing point here on the driver's side we'll go ahead and take a self tapping screw and ground our white wire to the body of the vehicle. That's nice and secure. We are going to go ahead and wrap these two connections up with some electrical tape to protect them from the outside elements. Now we have those wrapped up we'll go ahead and set our tail light back into place. If you can put some of those factory wire loom over the wire to protect the ma little but. Now with this back in position loosely, we'll go ahead and go underneath the vehicle and run our green wire over to the passage side and make that connection. Now here on the other side of the vehicle we'll grab out four flat wiring and run it over our hitch a little but right here and that'll eventually be mounted right here so you'll have access to it right next to your receiver hitch. We'll take the green wire, run it over here also. So we'll go ahead and go above the bumper breaker right here just keep it away from the exhaust. We'll go ahead and take this. If you look up you can see up into the back side of your tail light. So you can just push up here and get it up there just enough so you can go ahead and go back to the top side and get access to your wire and make the connection. Go ahead and run the green wire above the bumper breaker right here. It'll reach up and get it tucked in behind the tail light so you can get access to that and make our connection. Now that we have our green wire ran across the hitch and up behind the bumper, behind our tail light we can go ahead and take that down and you see after you tug it up in there you'll have access to the green wire. So now we can go ahead and connect green to green with our quick splice connector on the passenger side for our passenger side turn signal and break. Pop that on there. Bring in our new wire. Get a pair of pliers. Make sure you get a good connection. Go ahead and close the little cover on there. Give I a pull. See we have a good connection. Go ahead wrap that up in electrical tape. Then we'll go ahead and reinstall our tail lights. And our trunk panels on the inside and go underneath with a zip tie and test our new wiring. Just give it a little added protection from the elements. With that connected we'll go ahead and put our tail light back into place. And install the hardware for it back inside the trunk. Go ahead and reinstall our carpet here. And install our last tie down point. Go ahead and repeat the same process on the driver's side in re installing the tail light. Now that we have everything secure up top, we are going to go ahead and secure our wires here underneath and go ahead and test it out. Its always a good idea if your doing wiring to get some zip ties just to secure everything once you get everything ran. Now we'll go ahead and use some electrical just to secure these wires back together since we did pull the green wire off. Just gets everything nice and tidy underneath. Just going to go ahead secure our four flat right here to the hitch. That way we'll get access to it right here. We'll go ahead and secure our green wire and we're ready to test out the wiring. Go ahead and clip the ends off our zip ties just to clean up our install look. Now we'll go ahead and test our wiring. Go ahead and take our test light. Hook it up to the open terminal on our four flat that's the ground. Then the next one over will be our running lights. Go ahead and test our running lights circuit. That's good. Go ahead and test the driver's side signal. The passenger side turn signal. Then we'll test the brakes. That'll be the green and yellow wire. Those will be constant signals for the break. All right with everything working we're ready to hit the road. That'll do for our install of the current vehicle wiring harness with four pull flat trailer connector. Part number C58044 on our 1997 Chevrolet Lumina. .

The product was about 8 inches too short in the application for which it was sold, other than that it worked great.

This attached very easily to my tail light wires. When not towing, I just shut it up in my trunk, and when I need to pull, I open the trunk and pull them out. I was very skeptical when I got the kit and saw the instructions, but it worked! 635478

Wire harness works fine but had no instructions, not even a identifier for which color wire does what. No ring terminal included for the ground wire. I think an end cap should be included on the harness due to the fact that there is power at the plug end any time the vehicles lights are operating. I ordered connector cover 20112, fits well on this harness. 563179

The 4 pole trailer connector part # C58044 is designed with a green wire, yellow wire, brown wire and white wire. The green wire wires into the right turn wire of the vehicles wiring harness. The yellow wires into the left turn signal of the vehicles wiring harness. The brown wire wires into the tail light signal. The white is the ground wire that needs to be grounded to a clean bare metal surface on the vehicle. A ring terminal that accepts 14 gauge wire such as part # DW05737-1 can be used to ground the white wire. If you would like an end cap on the 4 pole connector I recommend part # 20112 by tow ready to protect the end of the connector. I have also attached a wiring help article to assist with the installation.

Hitch delivered quickly. The packaging is excellent. The condition of the hitch is new. The fixing kit, bolts and nuts correspond to the hitch. The video on the site was of great help in installing the hitch. I would like to have a video on the site how to connect the wires, but it's not difficult for an electrician. Problems with the installation of hitches on the car did not arise. 556889

This Curt 4 pole part C58044 is a hardwire installation. I have attached a video of the hardwire installation for part # 18252 on a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. It is a different part number but the same installation. Although, I do recommend part # 56076 custom fit plug and play wiring harness for this vehicle. The plug and play option is a much easier installation.

This is a standard flat connector for attaching to a trailer. I don't have it installed yet, but it looks like it will work perfectly. The cable is long enough to connect to both rear lights. 105063

I finally got it installed. My 87 Jeep has had the wiring modified several times in its life so nothing was as it was supposed to be. I finally got all of the previous mistakes unwired, returned it to normal and then added the connection for the trailer. It was easy to install and worked perfectly. I like it and use it all the time.

  • Bypassing TIPM for 2006 Dodge Ram for Trailer Wiring
  • The trailer wiring circuits on the newer Dodge trucks have some interesting issues. The issue is the TIPM like you mentioned. If it detects enough shorts it will eventually lock up and require you to spend quite a bit of money. It basically is a big circuit board. The easiest way to deal with them is to bypass the factory trailer wiring. To do this with a 7-way like you said you have on your truck you will first need to start with a 4-way. For that you will need the part # C58044. Now...

For your 2015 Chevy Impala Limited, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236 which has a max amperage of 5 amps on stop/turn lights and 7.5 amps on tail lights. This is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and will protect your factory wiring. The Hopkins # HM48925 will only put out a max amperage of 2.1 per circuit so that won't help. There are many that could work,...

The only trailer wiring harnesses we have listed for the YJ are hardwire harnesses, # 18252 or # C58044. If you bought a different harness let me know what it is and I can determine what it fits since there are no T-connectors for your YJ.

  • Function of Brown Trailer Wires With Green and Yellow Tracers
  • If you are referring to wire colors on a trailer, then usually a brown wire is for running lights. If your trailer has two brown wires, one with a green tracer and one with a yellow tracer, then these would typically be the running light wires for the right and left sides of the trailer, respectively. Some trailer harnesses such as the 25-foot Mighty Cord # A10-4225VP are what is called a "wishbone" harness, which has two running light wires to make it easier to make the connections...

If you see the lights were accurate than your vehicle wiring harness was reversed. If this is the case, you can use the Curt Vehicle Wiring Harness...

  • Different Ways to Wire a Lighted Headache Rack
  • I have two options for you to install a headache rack with lights such as the B&W Custom Headache Rack part # BWPUCP7500BA on your 2008 Ford F-250. However, both of them will require splicing as they do not make an in-line connector specifically for this application. If you wanted to make the headrack removable in regards to the lighting functions then you would need to install a 4-way like part # HMC20031 on the end of the wiring harness that goes to the headrack and then splice a...

  • Parts Needed to Install Trailer Wiring & Brake Controller in 1968 Chevrolet C/K Series Pickup
  • Most camper trailers with electric drum brakes use a 7-way RV style plug like the one on part # H20046 and so you'll need a mating 7-way socket on the C10. This socket will carry all lighting signals as well as brake power and 12V auxiliary trailer power to your Casita. You will also need a brake controller to send power to your trailer brakes. You will need a 4-pole harness on the truck, which we'll then adapt to the 7-way type using our Brake Controller Install Kit # ETBC7. If you...

  • Thank you for the photo of your Ford F-250's trailer wiring that has a square OEM connector o one end and both 4-pole and U.S. Car (round) connectors on the other end. These could be piggy-backed together to give you both connectors active at once. If you prefer you could use # 40167 and splice in a 4-pole like # C58044.

  • Will Brown Wires from 5 Wire Wishbone be Connected to Single Brown Wire on 4 Wire Harness
  • If your wishbone that has 5 wires has 2 Brown wires, like the Optronics # A35W42B, then they would both be for the running light function and you will connect them to the single Brown wire one a 4 wire like the Curt # C58044. The two Brown wires on a wishbone let you run the running light function down both sides of your trailer. If you only had 4 wires then you would have to cross the Brown wire to the other side of your trailer when needed. I have attached some photos of both parts...

  • Tail Light Converter to Combine Separate Stop and Turn Lights for Trailer
  • In most trailer wiring the stop and turn light signals are combined into one circuit for each side of the trailer. 4-pole wiring uses a yellow wire for the combined left-hand stop/turn signal and a green wire for the right side. 7-way wiring also combines these light functions. You can refer to the linked article on trailer wiring. If you are looking to connect a motorcycle's separate stop and turn lights to a trailer whose lighting is combined you can use Roadmaster part # RM-732. This...

  • No Trailer Running Lights Troubleshooting on a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500
  • It sounds like you have narrowed the problem down to being on your 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 since multiple trailers have had the same results when connected to that vehicle. It sounds like the problem could be a blown relay on your truck since you have checked the fuses. However, the fuse you would be looking for should be in cavity J14 and will require a 20 amp cartridge fuse. We have seen this issue a few times and have seen some threads on the internet where people have had this problem...

  • Bypassing Ram 2500 TIPM for Trailer Wiring Solution
  • The trailer wiring circuits on the newer Dodge trucks have some interesting issues. The issue is the TIPM like your mechanic mentioned. If it detects enough shorts it will eventually lock up and require you to spend quite a bit of money. It basically is a big circuit board like he said though. The easiest way to deal with them is to bypass the factory trailer wiring. To do this with a 7-way like you said you have on your truck you will first need to start with a 4-way. For that you will...
