Video Transcript for Bargman Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring 54701-003 Review

Today were reviewing part number 54701-003 from Bargman. This is a fifth wheeler gooseneck 90 wiring harness with a 7-pole plug. It fits Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Ford, Nissan, and Toyota trucks that have a factory tow package. Ill show you that in a moment. This is the seven-way that fits on the side of your truck bed, and it fits just like that. It does come with a cover to protect it from the elements.

You have the 90 angle that will allow it to fit neatly inside the truck bed on the side, and the only part of the seven-way that you actually will see inside the truck is the plug itself. You will not see the elbow or the cord. So if you have a fifth wheel or gooseneck with a seven-way thats too short to reach the bumper, you can use this basically it serves as an extension thats permanently mounted. It does come with the self-tapping screws that you need for installation and it also comes with printed instructions. If by any chance this is too close, this part is too close to your side of your truck, you can use the included spacer like that and you see that now makes it thicker so therefore its farther away from the side of your truck, and the other end connects, of course, to the seven-way at your bumper so you always are able to use your seven-way thats at the bumper because you have these connectors also.

This is made in the United States, and it does come with a one-year limited warranty, and there you have it for part number 54701-003 from Bargman. This is the fifth wheel gooseneck 90 wiring harness with seven-pole plug.

Will try to keep this as real as it gets out there. 2015 F250 XLT Crew Cab 8' Bed Ordered the Reese Elite Gooseneck and Barger 90 degree wiring harness. Received the gooseneck hitch and harness quickly. Free shipping got here in two days. Item came in two boxes. The rails were poorly packaged. Box was basically open and beat to hell, leaving markings on the rails' paint. Didn't bother me, but might others. The pucks were loose in the box and were lucky they did not fall out. The second box with the ball, ball mount, harness and misc. hardware was packed so well it took about 5 minutes to take off all the staples and then each product was individually boxed inside. Wish they would treat the rail box with the same care. Instructions are ok. Used the online install video instead. The video is slightly simplified as getting the nuts on the bolts is a slight challenge for a one man install. I was able to do the entire installation by myself with the exception of the four rail-to-frame bolts. Getting these snugged up to the point of being able to torque took two people simply because the nuts are hidden on the backside of the rail...particularly the driver-side front...which is slightly behind the gas tank, but still accessible. My F250 is factory lifted 4-5" so I did not have to remove the rear wheels, nor did I have to remove the spare tire or heat shield. Lower trucks will need the rear wheels pulled. Installing the ball mounting plate took some doing. Got one bolt on then decided to actually install the ball into the plate from above pulling the plate tight below. I used vice grips to basically keep the plate mounted tight rather than trying to lift it from underneath with one had and bolt it with the other. For me the most time consuming part of the project was getting the darned bed bolts off to lift the right side. Broke the T50 bit they supplied and then two others. Finally gave up and ground off two of the remaining bolts...and ordered replacements. Tip for those doing this on their own, you may want to spray the bolts from under with PB Blaster the day before you intend to install. I forgot and the issue was likely that the bolts were rusted. The wiring harness was a breeze, although I wish a shorter version was available. (Perhaps I missed it). Had to loop/zip tie about 2-3' under the bed. Connecting between the factory connectors did require me to pull the mounting plate. Was a bit tight to just slip the new connector in. Also, working the harness thru the hole in the bed side was a bit tight. Install probably took 10 minutes after getting the holes drilled. Total install time for this slightly skilled guy was about 3-1/2 hours...after the bed bolts fiasco. Oh...and did it all with a cast on the left arm. Ha! Now to see how she tows! 431267

Installed on a 2014 Chevy 3500HD crew cab, long bed, dually with trailer towing package but without camper wiring option. Installation was easy, aside from the thought of drilling a hole in my new truck bed. I was doubtful of the 2" hole where most others specify 2 1/8, but the connections squeaked through the 2". I located the new plug toward the tailgate, above one of the tie-down hooks so it's easy to reach from the rear of the truck, but still out of harm's way. My old truck had it in front of the wheel well and a short person had to climb on the tire to reach it. My 5-er's wire harness comes out of the back of the hitch assembly anyway. There was plenty of clearance for the plug and wire inside the bed walls. Once I snaked it along the frame, it was plug and play with the receiver hitch wiring harness. I put some dielectric grease on the contacts to prevent corrosion. A few cable ties and I was done. The only negative: due to the locating it toward the rear of the truck bed, I wish they offered a shorter harness. 150298

The only issue Ive had with the wiring is that the plug from the 5th wheel would occasionally come loose and Id lose a couple of the connections. I now put a velcro strap around the cap

Bought this 7 foot harness to go in to my new 2012 chevy silverado. Wasn't sure where I wanted to put the plug receptacle in the bed. Watch the video and it show the installer putting the plug end down low in the lower left corner. If you haul dirt , mulch or gravel I felt this was a bad spot so I found another. Chevy has 3 plastic plug covers in both sides of the bed for a ladder rack/tool holder attachment accessory they sell. I pulled the middle plug cover out which is oval and with my dremel tool I made the hole round to the proper size and fed the wire down the hole and over the wheel well down to the back bumper where just like the video it shows how to make the connection. Mounted in the bed in this location the 7 foot plug lead gives you plenty of room to route and secure the wires out of the way. If you crank down the spare tire its easier to run the wire and secure the wire to different points. My bed has no new holes in it. The plug is up high out of the way which works for my fifth wheel and the plug was wired correctly so all the lights/brakes work like they should. Good deal 51693

This wiring harness was very easy to install and pluged into the existing factory harness. The "how to" videos were very helpful also. The outlet in the box is nice because the cord does't have to go over the tailgate and may not reach the outlet on the bumper. The web site was easy to use. Shipping was fast and on time. Don't change anything! 171466

It still works great!!

Shocked, Surprised, and Amazed are a few words I would describe the ease of installation for this harness. Literally less than 20 minutes and I am NOT a mechanic...worked great and I would recommend to anyone. Great product! 138337

After looking at all the different brands, I choose this one because the wire gauges as heavy as the trucks wiring. All the others I looked at, use wiring that is all the same gauge, which is too light for the application. Especially the white wire or ground. For most trailers the ground needs to be at least 12 gauge and should be a 10 gauge. With all led lights, it's not as big a deal, but if you have electric trailer brakes, you need a heavy ground and blue wire. Anyway, this harness may cost more, but it's made the way it should be, not just something that works. 378044

The B&W Hitch and wiring harness I purchased worked great. Did the install myself which was a job but the instructions were good and the video may it fairly straightforward. The wireing harness had to be 100% wire-for-wire soldered into place becaue the original connector on my truck had been damaged and replaced. So the plug-and-play part not working was a surprise but we dealt with it. All-in-all a perfect fir for everything. I would highly recommend both items. Great quality and ease of use perfect. 399060

I would like to thank the people at etrailer for the help with the return ( my fault ) and reorder of the hitch to fit my truck. the only reason I am not giving and excellent score is I feel it took to long for the refund to come back to me . no reason for the delay in today's computer driven world BUT that was out of the hands of the people that helped with the order,Mark & the guys do get and excellent from me & I will be using etrailer in the future 139595

In todays business the products get to be so much the same. Great product from and Bargman. The difference was that etrailer and Meriah V did "more" than most all of the internet stores I have used. When ask, and they did not know they called the manufacturer while I was on hold for less than 1 minute. Product received in 3 days as promised, and was plug and play as promised. Great job of follow up etrailer, I'll be back. 227761

Installed on an 05 F250 in about 15 minutes. Put it in the bed sidewall behind the left wheel well, and the hardest part was deciding what to do with the excess cable to keep it from being chafed or otherwise damaged. Would have purchased a shorter cable were it available, but no real complaints. Easiest way to move a 7 way socket I've ever seen. 210347

throw a few zip ties in there and you got it all. very well made. much less time consuming and easier than making one yourself. happy I went with the more expensive option the quality was great. a keeper would be nice also for the plug in. I mean the little safety piece you have to remove on the oem plug to disconnect. thanks steve 84966

Basically a plug and play product. Appears to be well made. I bought the 90 degree model just to make running the wires easier to drop down to the frame side. 7' is more than enough if you are mounting to the rear portion of the bed like I did (between tailgate and wheel well). Front mount would likely need the longer version. 330100

Received the fifth wheel inside bed wiring harness within 2 days; was packaged well, materials new in unopened wraps. Have not installed unit yet but is exactly as pictured and everything is a simple " plug and play" to connect to existing factory trailer 7 pin harness at the trailer hitch above the bumper. 326785

Purchased this to,install in my 2007 Dodge 2500. the plugs on the end will not plug into the stock Dodge wiring harness. Dodge requires a rectangular plug and the wiring harness comes with round plugs. I had to cut the plugs off and use Skotch Bloks to attach wiring harness to Dodge. 55021

by: Allan B.08/30/2012

The cable arrived with in a couple of days. Today I decided to install and it all went smoothly. It took about 1 hour but much time was spent with my present connector because it was bent from someone trying to drive under my bumper. I was very happy with the cable and it fit great. 53575

Easy installation, followed the video with no issues. Love having the plug in the bed of the truck, it stays clean and dry. Great value for the money, everything was included. If your concerned with drilling into the side of your truck, don't be. End job will look professional. 287003

After one year, plug still works great. Would highly recommend purchasing this item. Also appreciated the fast delivery and customer service from

Outstanding quality. I bought this harness largely because of the sealed 90* connector not so much because of limited space but because I like the fact that it is actually sealed. I have not installed it yet but see no reason to be anything less than totally happy with it. 337416

Install was very simple in 2009 Chevy w/5.5 foot bed. Had about 14-16" of slack still with a mid-bed install. Recommend dropping the spare tire to install so you have room to tie up the slack, but you can get it in without removing the tire. 36809

The wiring harness was as described and delivery was very fast (3 days). Installation was a snap, finding my hole saw took longer than the installing the harness. I did use a 2 1/8 hole saw, fitting the plug ends thru was much easier. 229032

It's a good product. Easy to hook up. The only fail is that I really wish the rv plug seated as nicely and firmly into the receptacle as it does into the vehicle' bumper receptacle. Almost worried it may pop out at times. 362252

  • Comparing the Curt Q20 and the Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitches.
  • As far as height adjustability and weight capacities the Curt Q20 # C16130 and the Curt A20 # C16140 are identical. They both have a Gross Towing Weight of 20,000 lbs, a Vertical Load Limit of 5,000 lbs, and a height range of 13-17 inches. When it comes to choosing which one is better, even though they are both excellent choices, I recommend going with the A20 because it has more features. Right off the bat the A20 has interlocking jaws to secure your king pin as opposed to the Q20 jaw...

  • 5th Wheel/Gooseneck In-Bed Trailer Wiring for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500
  • Take a look at the back of the trailer connector on your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. If the connecter that plugs into the back of it is square/rectangular then # C56071 will fit. All of the 5th wheel/gooseneck in-bed harnesses have square plugs for this truck. Take a look at the video I have linked showing installation of a similar harness. If the connector that plugs into the back is round then you would likely need # 54701-003.

  • Instructions For Installing 5th Wheel Wiring In The Bed of 2012 Ford F-350
  • I do have a video installation showing Draw-Tite Fifth Wheel wiring # 20110 being installed on 2002 Ford F-250. The video shows how to cutout the correct size hole in your truck bed and where to plug the wiring in at. The process should be the same as your 2012 Ford F-350 as Ford has not changed the wiring on these trucks for over 10 years. There are not specific instructions available, as it is up to the consumer whether to cut a hole in their truck bed, or just loop the wiring up. I...

From the back of the mounting surface on the 7-Way to the end of the plug is measured approximately 3.4 inches. From the front of the mounting surface to the end of the plug it measured approximately 3.7 inches. I made a short video showing the measurements I took.

I have linked you to an install video showing a similar part being installed on a 2002 F250. The procedure shown in the video will be identical to the procedure for installing the wiring harness on your truck.

  • Recommended Gooseneck Hitch for a 2017 Ford F-350 DRW With the Factory Puck System
  • Since your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty has the Dual Wheels, there is another solution for you to tow a gooseneck trailer. Since the factory puck system on your F-350 should already have a center puck for a gooseneck hitch ball all you will need to do is install the Reese Elite Series Pop-In Ball Kit # RP30137. This hitch ball will pop in and pop out of your bed without having to reach inside your wheel-well to unlatch the locking mechanism like you would with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed...

  • We do have 7-way wiring harnesses intended for use in the bed of a pickup for either a slide-in camper or a 5th wheel trailer. Harness # 54701-003 that you referenced is a suitable option. This kit plugs right in at your bumper-mounted factory 7-way (which will remain fully active, by the way) and provides 7-feet of additional slack to let you plug in your Lance camper. This harness uses a round U.S. Car connector, as shown in the linked photo. If you need a longer harness use Curt # C56000...

Since your truck has a very short bed 5th wheel towing will require a standard fixed 5th wheel hitch along with a replacement Sidewinder pin box, as you noted. The 16K-rated Pro Series # PS30855 and the Reese # RP30047 both feature a 4-way pivoting head assembly to simplify hitching your trailer on uneven ground as well as a dual-jaw system for better grip on your king pin. The key difference between the two is the length...

This installation kit uses existing holes to bolt to the truck frame, but holes to attach the bed rails to the frame brackets will need to be drilled through the truck bed. The rails are considered industry standard, and are compatible with Reese, Draw-Tite, Valley, Husky and Curt fifth wheel hitches. No additional bracketry...
