Video Transcript for Bargman 7-Way RV-Style Connector Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bardman seven way RV style coiled connector. It's available in three sizes. This pre wired seven way is great for replacing your old seven way or wiring up a new trailer. It features a pre wired seven blade style male end. The coil design makes it compact for storage but it can be stretched out to its full length. I've got the 12 foot one here.

Check it out when fully extended. Because it coils, it's going to help prevent dragging and tangles. It's resistant to water, oil, and chemicals. So we've got Mike here who helps out our customers. Tell me Mike, what are customers looking for when buying a seven way Mike: Well for the coiled seven ways in particular, probably the number one question that we get is will this really stretch to however many feet it's supposed to. They really do but it takes some force.

As you can see, I'm pulling pretty hard. Of course your vehicle and trailer can pull on it a lot harder, but they will stretch as far as they are supposed to. Speaker 1: Oh yeah sure. Mike: Another thing we get asked is what is the gauge of each of these wires Our power and our ground are each 10 gauge. The blue one here is for electric brakes and it's 12.

The other four are for trailer lights and they are 14 gauge. Speaker 1: All right cool. Thanks Mike. Mike: No problem. Speaker 1: Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed.

To help us out with our insulation, we're going to be using some ring terminals and you could pick up those with part number, 44-5310A. Now the jack on our coiled wire does come pre stripped. To get started, we're going to start with our white wire first. We're going to use our wire strippers and strip back about a quarter of an inch. Clean up my wire a little bit here. Take one of my ring terminals and put it in place. Now we want it to where you can just see the wire on the inside but you don't want any hanging out. Once we get it where we want, take our crimpers and crimp it in place. It's always a good idea to check to make sure you've got it nice and snug and that the wire's not coming out.I've gone ahead and staggered the rest of the wires according to how they're going to be hooked up to my junction box. If your junction box may be different, I've done this to give me a cleaner look and more room to install my wires. Now let's go under the trailer.I've gone ahead and removed the cover off my junction box. Here you can see my wiring for my trailer lights. Now let's connect our seven way. Now if you need a junction box, you can pick one up at etrailer.com. My junction box also has a little grommet here and I'm going to slip that over my jacket. That way we've got a good seal between the seven way and the junction box.So with it in place, I'll go ahead and put it back in the junction box and begin connecting my wiring. Now we just connected our black to our battery which is our power. Our white to our ground, our red to our left turn, our blue to our brake, our green to our taillights, our yellow to our back up and finally our brown to our right turn. Now we're going to go ahead and test it with our tester. The best way for you to test it at home is with your vehicle. Here's our running lights. Our brake lights. Our right turn and our left turn. That's going to complete our look at the Bardman seven way RV style coiled connector.

Quality in every respect EXCEPT the coil has too much tension which will pull either male connector out of the female plug. Mine did on first drive and wore the core down to the copper wires. I've now had to physically tie each end to a vehicle to prohibit this. 480555

Cord works food for gooseneck trailers to keep from getting hung on hitch/bumper. Only issue have had is the insulation on cord is cracking/dry rotting after about 2.5yrs 412028

Bought this to keep wiring off the ground and it works. Wiring to trailer was strait forward. As some reviews have suggested it is important to get it long enough as the heavy dry jacket and coils are quite stiff. My main complaint is that the connection to my truck (Toyota) has never been snug enough to keep it from popping out. I’ve had to rig up a small strap to wrap around the plug and outlet cover on the vehicle to keep it secure. 544524

Comments

The plug features a lip on it that would typically hook onto the spring loaded cover on the vehicles 7-way, which would serve to hold the connector in place. If the spring loaded cover is missing, or if the spring is weak, it wouldnt be able to hold the plug. You could use a small bladed standard screwdriver to slightly bend the pins in the plug, which would make the plug fit more tightly.

The Trailer Wire plug has 2 issues: 1. The individual wires are not as heavy as other products I have used. 2. The plug does not use standard wiring colors for: a. Marker (should be Brown but it is Green) b. Right Turn (should be Green but it is Brown) c. Left Turn (should be Yellow but it is Red) d. Reverse (should be Red but it is Yellow). Check the wires before splicing in so you don't have to redo it. I would suggest you get a wiring box to allow you to connect them without splicing. 365147

etrailer is probably the best one stop trailer solution on the web. I just fabricated my own deck over dovetail tailed from scratch. I ordered just about everything I needed for the build. The sales staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend etrialer to anyone weather your rebuilding your trailer or fabricating a new trailer, they pretty much have everything your looking for with very good pricing and they stand behind every product they sell. 359316

I like this plug setup because it will keep the wire off the ground. It's good quality , the only down fall is the end with the wires is too short it should be at least 12"-24" long so you can tie into your junction box and still have some strait wire to clip to the top of your trailer frame that way when you pull on the plug your not yanking on the junction box 180882

Also doubles as a piece of gym equipment for a great upper body resistance work-out! I'm glad I ordered the longer 8-foot version. The cable is heavy-duty and really stiff. Un-stretched is only about 3-feet; you'll want the extra length. Looks like it will do the job. 578891

Highly recommend this product. After one year of use, it still proves to be a solid plug. The coiled action prevents it from possible disengagement while driving sharp corners. The plug goes into the Tow vehicle and the wiring goes straight to a junction box. Be sure to wire according to your tow vehicle settings. Also use a anti Corrosion spray to prevent deterioration of the connectors / wires. 565797

The plug is not wired in the normal way. So it took me a little time to see that the color of the wires were not the same as my RV or the other things that I tow. One example is that the Yellow wire which is normally goes to pin 5 went to the center pin. For my use all I need to so is wire it pin to pin not looking at the color of the wire. 491363

The coiled cord is very well manufactured and heavy duty. It is the right solution to help prevent sagging cord issues when used on trailers. 394868

- 54006-044

I have had this on my car hauler and love it. The coiled cord should be the standard on every trailer. It is easy to store and does not drag the ground when in use. Since it doesn't need to be managed while in use, it doesn't chafe like my old straight one did when I had to wrap the excess around the tongue of the trailer. 387340

I believe that this is the best quality product on the market. I have changed out all the cords on every trailer we use to these and havent had any trouble with loosed connections at the plug. Some are straight and some are pigtail but all work great.

  • Recommended Motorhome 7-Way to Towed Vehicle 7-Way Tow Bar Wiring
  • For your 7-way to 7-way motorhome to towed vehicle, I recommend the Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 8' Long Coiled Cable - Trailer End # 54006-044 along with the Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End # PK12706. This will give you a 7-Way RV Blade to matching 7-Way with a coiled cable to keep it from dragging on the ground.

  • 7-Way Trailer Wiring Connector to Reach 6 Feet from Junction Box to Vehicle
  • Stretching the 7-Way Trailer Connector # WG54006-043 to 6 feet isn't the best option for you. It'll reach 6 feet but the coils are fairly tight. I extended it easily to about 4 feet but beyond that it wanted to fight me. It'll loosen up over time of course but I think a longer cable would be better for you. The 8 foot long # 54006-044 is a better choice. Or if you want to really make sure you can reach there's a 12 foot, part # WG54006-046, but then it'll hang lower to the ground.

  • The Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 8' Long Coiled Cable - Trailer End # 54006-044 is 8 foot long when fully stretched. The coil keeps some slight tension to keep the cable from dragging, but it will work very well for your 5th wheel connection. With your socket on the rear end sidewall, this 8 foot cable will not be overkill for length and will have more than enough travel so I recommend this over a shorter option. The 7-way connector will have a clip that will help keep this firmly...

  • We do offer various lengths of 7-way RV-style trailer wiring extensions that are shown on the linked page. These all have a vehicle socket on one end and a trailer plug on the other, such as with part # TLW6048 from TorkLift. None of these extensions has a coiled-type cord as found on adapters like # HM47053. However, I do have a solution for you, which is to use one of the available lengths of the WesBarg RV-style coiled cable to fabricate your cord. We offer their 6-foot # WG54006-043,...

  • How Far Will The 54006-044 Actually Stretch?
  • I went out to our warehouse with a collegue and we measured the cord for you. At it's very longest with a lot of pressure on both ends, we measured 9 feet 4 inches from plug end to the end of the pigtail wires. Now, that is with enough force to probably unplug the connection from the trailer, but it will stretch a little more than the 8 feet, which I assume is why you are asking. it is guaranteed to stretch and function at 8 feet.

  • The Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 8' Long Coiled Cable - Trailer End # 54006-044 is 13 inches at the coil then 10 inches at the connector and 7 inches at the pigtail. We also have the coiled 6 foot # WG54006-043 and the coiled 12 foot # WG54006-046 which will only be longer or shorter in the coiled section.

  • Recommendation to make Trailer 7-Way Longer
  • The closest adapter we have to what you need is the Torklift part # TLW6021. This is a 7-way adapter that has a male end on one side and a female on the other. It measures a little longer than you requested at 24 inches though. Your ideal solution would be to remove your current 7-way and install a longer one on your trailer like with the part # H20042 that is a 3 foot long 7-way plug and lead. You could trim this down to match your trailer length needs as well.

  • How to Make Coiled 7-Way to 7-Way Tow Bar Wiring Extension
  • I have a solution for you, but surprisingly we don't offer a coiled 7-way to 7-way extension for flat towing. What you would need is to start with the part # 54006-044 and then wire it to the part # A7WCB so that you have a coiled 8 foot long 7-way to 7-way. If you needed a socket you would need part # PK12703. For just replacement bulb and sockets you would want part # 294-0774.
