Video Transcript for Bargman Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 54-67-525 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 54-67-525. This is the Bargman 7-Pull round connector. It's going to come with all the necessary items for a complete installation. This is a replacement 7-way RV style molded plastic trailer end plug. It's going to feature self cleaning contacts in the plug head. These are designed to prevent water damage and to keep out any dirt from the connections.

You're going toJ have the molded on cable that's designed to protect the wiring from water and debris. It's also going to feature closed terminals as well as closed wires. This is going to provide resistance to weather damage and any type of corrosion. It's going to have the finger tabs right here on there connector. That's going to allow for easy connecting and disconnecting. It's going to come with all the necessary butt connectors that you need.

That way, you can easily connect this to the wiring for your particular application and get that installed very quickly and easily. It's also going to come with a heat shrink tube. This is going to provide protection to the butt connectors from any type of water damage and abrasions. As you heat this with a heat gun or a hair dryer, it's going to conform around the connection points or any exposed wiring. It's just ultimately going to protect those from any type of damage from the elements. This unit is compatible with thermoplastic or metal 7-way vehicle end connectors.

The cable length, it's going to measure from end to end. Take that measurement for you real quick. We're looking at just over 12 inches, so just a little over a foot. About 12 and a half to 12 and 3 quarters of and inch from end to end. You can see on this end you're going to have the exposed wiring.

Now, when you connect your butt connectors, these are designed just to go over the wire ends but you need to go ahead and splice these or cut these back a little bit. Strip back that casing so it can expose just the raw wire. You shouldn't need more than just like a quarter of an inch or a half an inch of the wire exposed in order to get it in the butt connector. Once you have your wires in each end of the butt connector, they're going to bond right here in the middle, and you want to secure that simply by crimping that middle section down. That's going to connect your 2 connections. We're going to have just over a foot of cable length. When it comes to the wiring configuration, yellow wire is going to be for our center auxiliary, green is for our tail and license lights, brown is for right turn and stop lights, blue is for our electric brake, black is our battery charge, red is our left turn and stop lights, and the white is going to be our ground wire. When it comes to the wire gauge, the black and white wire is going to be a gauge 10, blue wire is going to be a gauge 12, and then the brown, red, green, and yellow wires are going to be gauge 14. It's going to include different size butt connectors to accommodate the different size wiring. That's going to do it for today's review of part number 54-67-525.

The Bargman 7-Pin Round Connector is extremely well built and appears to be very durable. The included butt connector hardware is very basic and isn't up to the level of quality of the connector itself, so I ended up using Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors in addition to the overall piece of heat shrink tubing provided. I will be using this on my double axle boat trailer that sees a good deal of saltwater exposure so I opted to go a little overkill on the water and corrosion protection. My 2015 Toyota only has the options for a 4-pin or 7-Pin, so after I encountered some issues with a Reese 5-Pin to 7-Pin converter I decided to make a permanent alteration, and this fit the bill perfectly. It took a bit of time to figure out the proper connections as none of the charts I found worked for my setup (2016 WESCO Aluminum Double Axle) so this is the combination that worked for me. Simple, straight forward wire to wire connection according to color. I cut the leads of the plug shorter so the shrink wrap would cover more of the outer insulation when heated to provide a better seal. It made it a bit tighter to crimp the connections, but worth it. 333528

The part arrived very quickly. I was able to completed the installation of the part, but I have a suggestion for future orders of this part. The connectors for the 7 wires were for the most part too small for the thickness of the wires for easy insertion. I had to use my own connectors. Also the cover for the exposed wires that should shrink to form a tight cover when heated was quite thin and did not seal well, particularly on the ends where water could sleep in. . I had to go over its entire length with Gorilla tape. 277340

I was fortunate to be able to find this product on etrailer.com to replace a damaged 7-pole round connector on my RV. This is the last of several purchases from etrailer I have made of unusual or hard to find items. The service is excellent, the staff is helpful and knowledgeable, and the delivery is very fast. This is a quality product. I wanted a molded connector just like my original connector, not the plastic replacement usually found in stores and on-line. 155132

Do you have a question about this Wiring?

  • Replacement for Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD
  • To replace the 7-way on your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD I recommend the Reese Multi-Plug Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # 74682 because it is an easy plug-in design. All you need to do is plug it into the 7-way socket on your truck and it will work as a replacement. For a trailer connector I recommend the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable # H20046 which is 8 feet long. If you want something shorter there is also the 6 foot # H20044 or 4 foot # H20043. I have added...

  • Adding a Second 7-Way and LED Light Strip to the Back of a 2011 Ford F-150
  • A 4-Way would not work anyway because a 4-Way flat trailer connector does not have a reverse light function. What you could do is use wiring harness # 41157. It will tee in line with your factory connectors and provide an additional 7-Way trailer connector. For an LED light strip for the back of your 2011 Ford F-150 that has a reverse function we have # BLS-1103 from Pilot. These are all 60 inch long models. All of these products would normally plug into a 4-Way and then you would...

  • Using a 7-Way to 5-Flat Trailer Adapter # HM47675 for Trailer with Electric Brakes
  • The 5th wire on a 5-pole flat trailer connector like the Wesbar harness # W002290 can be used for either a reverse lockout function (as on a surge brake coupler) or to deliver a signal for electric brakes. It just depends on how your trailer is wired. 7- to 5-pole adapters like the Hopkins # HM47675 will typically take the 7-way's center pin function and assign that to the 5th pole on the 5-pole output. For an RV-style 7-way this center pin usually carries the reverse light signal, not...

  • Parts Needed to Install a Battery on a Trailer for Wiring Up Interior Lights
  • For what you are trying to do the first thing you will need is the part # 37185 to convert your 4-way to a 7-way so that you will have the ability to have a 12 volt accessory circuit for your trailer. You will then need to use a length of # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) to connect the 7-way to the vehicle battery through a circuit breaker like part # 9510. You will then need to replace the 7-way on your trailer with the part # 54-67-525. This will give you the additional 12 volt circuit...

  • Adding a 7-Way, Battery, and Interior LED Lights for an Enclosed Trailer
  • It would be a good idea to add a 7-Way trailer connector such as # 54-67-525 to the trailer so you can utilize the 12 volt circuit on the Toyota Tundra's 7-Way connector to provide a maintenance charge to a trailer mounted battery. On the above 7-Way the green wire is running lights, brown is right turn and brake lights, black is 12 volt that you will run to the battery on the trailer, red is left turn/brake lights, and white is ground. Usually on a 4-Way you will have white as ground,...

  • Replacement 7-Way Plug for Prodigy RF Brake Controller 90250
  • The 7-way cable/plug on the Prodigy RF Brake Controller # 90250 is not user-serviceable. I checked with my contact at Tekonsha to confirm. Since the main housing is sealed to protect the internal components (and has tamper-proof hardware) you would have to do some damage to the box to get into it. Tekonsha does not recommend this but strictly speaking it could be done. Once inside the box you would need to wire in a new 7-way plug like # H20046. Soldering will be required. A potentially...

  • How to Make a 7-Way to 5-Way Adapter for Trailer with Separate Turn Signals
  • I can show you how to build an adapter for what you are trying to do, but there isn't one pre-made that we carry. You will need a trailer side 7-way like # 54-67-525, a signal converter # C56196, and a vehicle side 5-way # HM47900. Using the labels on the converter box you will need to wire the input side of it to the 7-way, and then wire the output side of it to the 5-way and you will have made an adapter to do what you are looking to do.

  • Trailer Battery Charge Recommendation for Battery on Trailer that Has 4-Way
  • What you will need to do is remove the 4-way of your trailer and replace it with a 7-way like the # 54-67-525 so that you can then run the black wire of the 7-way to the positive post of the battery so that it charges.

  • Wiring Functions for 6-Way Square Connector on a 1990 Coleman Pop-Up Camper
  • I think I might be about to blow your mind! Blue wire = electric brakes White wire = ground Green wire = right turn signal/brake lights Brown = tail/running lights Red = reverse lights Yellow = left turn and brake lights Some had a separate 2-pin connector with a black wire for 12 volt power and white wire for ground. If you find this to be inaccurate then the easiest way to determine the wire functions on the trailer side is to use a separate 12 volt battery and apply power...

  • How to Connect Horse Trailer with 6 Way Connector to 7 Way Vehicle Plug
  • To start, the colors on the trailer really isn't reliable since someone may have changed the wiring at some point; you'll need to test each circuit individually to verify which function it carries and work from there. I'm attaching a diagram of the typical wiring for a 6 way connection that you can cross reference and determine if your wiring matches up. The difference between a 6 way and 7 way connection is that a 7 way connection has a circuit for the reverse lights on the trailer. Now,...

  • How To Replace a 5-Way Trailer Connector with 8 Wires Using a 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • I am not very familiar with a 5-way trailer connector that has 8 wires like what you have now but it should not be too much work to change this out. I would not be able to give a function for each wire so what you will need to do is apply a 12 volt charge from a battery to see which light illuminates. This will then let you know the functions so you can attach them to the Bargman 7-Pole Round Connector w/ Hardware part # 54-67-525. The brown wire with yellow stripe likely has the same...

  • Trailer Brakes Lock Up When Connected To Trailer Using 6 to 7 Pole Adapter
  • The issue you are having with the trailer brakes locking up as soon as the trailer connector is plugged in has to do with the pin out of the trailer side trailer connector in relation to the adapter. The most likely problem is that the battery charge line is crossed with the brake output circuit. In order to fix this you will simply need to just swap out the two wires on the back of the trailer side trailer connector or you can just rewire a new trailer connector on the trailer using the...
