Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Video Transcript for Reese Weight Distribution - WD Only - RP66131 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number RP66131. This is the Reese Weight Distribution System without the Shank. It is a trunnion bar design rated at 15,000 pounds of gross towing weight and 1,500 pounds of tongue weight. This system is going to evenly distribute the weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and trailer for stability and control. It's going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and your trailer. It's going to feature a trunnion bar design.

These are going to be hot rolled and they have the tapered in for superior strength and flexibility. The bars will flex appropriately oven uneven terrain for a nice control and even ride. Then the curved ends are designed for use with the dual-cam sway control, part number RP26002 and that is going to be sold separately. The tension for the spring bars is going to be adjustable. All you have to do is switch the links of the chains to fine-tune your system depending on your application. The desired tilt is very easy to achieve with the serrated-washer design here on the head assembly.

You're going to have a serrated washer on this side and on this side of the gap where your shank is going to go. This slides slides into your 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver. Again, that shank is going to be sold separately, but that serrated-washer design has teeth on each washer to dig into the teeth on the head assembly, allowing the head to tilt as needed depending on your application. That's going to eliminate the need of having to use washers or spacers to get the desired tilt that you need. It's also going to feature a forged raised ball platform on the head. This going to eliminate the need for a raised hitch ball.

It does include the optional shim kit to fill any grab between the weight distribution head and the hitch bar. Again, you can use this if needed. It goes into this portion here the bolts would run through the two holes and you can determine whether you need that based off the details listed in the instructions. This system is going to include the head assembly, the lift brackets, the trunnion spring bars and the snap up handle; that way you can gain leverage when installing and uninstalling. It just goes on this portion of the lift bracket and you can try it up if needed to set the correct amount of tension depending on your application. That's just the leverage bar really helps out to help the installation get a little bit easier and also disconnecting when needed.

It's also going to include the lift chains and all necessary hardware. The adjustable shank and the trailer hitch ball are going to be sold separately This does require a hitch ball with a threaded shank with 1-1/3 diameter. If you want to use a threaded shank with an inch in diameter then you can use the included reducer sleeve just fits inside the hitch ball hole like that. It's going to allow you to use a hitch ball with an inch diameter shank instead of 1-1/3 if you need to. It's going to offer a tongue weight from 800 pounds to 1,500 pounds with a gross towing weight of 15,000 pounds. This is designed to fit a 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver ready for use with weight distribution system. Again, the shank is going to be sold separately. It does include the 5/8 inch pin and clip, in that way you can secure your shank inside of your hitch if you already have one or when you purchase one. The lift bracket positioning, you're going to need to mount this about 30 inches back from the hitch ball at a straight line angle, so you're going to measure that down the trailer frame and that's approximately where you would mount this. This is going to require approximately about 5-1/2 inches of spaces along the trailer frame. You can see there it's got a nice gap that's going to fit over the trailer frame and you just tighten up the set screw to get it fully secured. Here in etrailer.com you can find some optional mounts, they are going to be sold separately, that would take up less space on the trailer frame. Just keep in mind that this will not fit trailer frames wider than 2-1/2 inches. Now when selecting a weight distribution system, the tongue weight rating is the most important factor I determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your set up, they'll actually create a rigid ride which going to result in a bouncing trailer. If on the other hand the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight. To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, we must first determine your trailer's tongue weight and then you can add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and then those two measurements combined will make the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. Then you can choose whatever weight distribution system that you need. Again, that shank is going to go on this portion here, the head will tilt very easily with the serrated washer design. You have the trunnion bar design that just goes into the head assembly and then you have the lift bracket, you got the chains, you got the leverage bar, you got your reducer sleeve. You're going to have the optional shim kit and you're going to get the 5/8 inch pin and clip. You're also going to get the pins, so whenever you need to release the chain and bring that down you just need to remove the pin. Then to get that set back in the lift bar, all you have to do is line back up the holes and then you can reinstall the pin as needed. That's going to do it for our review of part number RP66131. This is the Reese Weight Distribution System. .

Not a whole lot to say about this product. It's works very well for us without any issue. Only complaint I have is not really product-related: The pipe used for lifting the bars into position is a tad longer than I wish it was. Reason being is that occasionally I need to have that bar completely vertical to get the chain on the trailer prior to lifting. The entire unit sits so low sometimes I have to cheat the system by choosing a link with less lifting power... then do the other side... then come back and to it all over again. Just a hassle and yes, i know I can just cut the bar with a cutoff wheel, but I just have not got to it yet. 581782

I really like the Reese Trunnion style weight distribution. It gives more clearance to the road than round-bar kits. I appreciate the fact that the bars are available in different spring rates for different tongue loads. I dial my front axle load restoration (FALR) exactly to 100% and having a variety of spring rates makes this possible. 568725

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-150 for Towing 10k Trailer
  • For a 10,000 lb rated trailer hitch confirmed to fit your 2015 Ford F-150 without a factory hitch you would want the part # C14017. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. You will need a brake controller to activate the brakes of your trailer. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This system has a tongue weight range of 800 lbs - 1,500 lbs which would be most likely what you would have. For a shank you would then want the part # RP54977. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight typically is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. For an 11,000 pound trailer that would make the tongue weight 1,100 to 1,650 pounds. A good rule to go by is if the loaded trailer gross weight is at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight, or if the vehicle sags at the back when connected to a trailer, weight distribution is a good idea.
