Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Pro Series Weight Distribution - WD Only - PS49581 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number PS49581. This is the Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System. The unit's going to help evenly distribute weight over the axles of your tow vehicle and trailer, offering stability and control. Ultimately, it's going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. This unit's going to feature your round, tapered spring bars, these are going to flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a nice, controlled, even ride. You can see right here how they slide into the head assembly, and then they're going to have these locking tabs to help hold them in place. Located on each end of the head assembly, right where those spring bars go in, we're going to have the Zerk fitting, that's going to allow for easy maintenance.

You can simply attach a grease gun to that an pump in the grease, that way you can lubricate that area. When it comes to the head assembly, you can easily tilt the head so you can get the desired angle that you need. It's going to use the traditional spacer rivet and washer design right here. It's going to come with all the washers you need, and a spacer rivet. That's going to go in this area right here, then there's a hole for the rivet to come through. Then you can add or remove washers from the spacer rivet to tilt the head up or down. It's also going to have a set screw down here, so once you have your hardware installed on the shank and the head assembly holding it on to the shank, you can tighten that down, and that's going to be your set screw.

That is included, it's already going to be installed in the head unit, that way all you have to do is tighten it or loosen it for your application. The head is a fabricated head that's going to be compatible with friction-style sway-control systems. Those systems are going to be sold separately. It's going to come with a welded steel shank. This is going to offer an adjustable height. It can be used in either rise or drop position.

Solid steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish on it, so it's going to last a long time. Now, I took a measurement of it earlier, and I measured from the very back to the very front. We'll just go ahead and do that measurement for you real quick. Very back to very front, that measurements going to measure about 12 inches. That measurement from the center of the adjustable holes here that our head's going to mount into, to the center of the pinhole, that's going to give us a measurement of about 7 3/4 of an inch. This part number does include the shank. Again, it's a nice, solid shank.

It's also going to come with all the mounting hardware that you need to get the head installed onto the shank. You're going to get your washers, you're going to get your bolts, and you're going to get your nuts for that. It also comes with your 5/8 inch hitch pin, as well as a clip. That way you can secure that shank inside of your 2 inch by 2 inch hitch. These right here are going to be our lift brackets. It does feature adjustable spring-bar tension simply by switching the links right here on the chains. That way you can fine-tune your system. It's also going to come with your snap-up lever. This is going to ease the installation by reducing the lifting that's required by the trailer jack. Now, the unit is going to be a complete steel construction. It's all going to have a nice black powder coat finish on it to resist rust and corrosion. It's got the nice powder coated steel. These right here are going to be positioned on the frame of our trailer. We're going to have our installation bolts right there. Then the lift brackets are going to be secured in place using the pin right here. Excuse me, the clip. While these are up, in place, you simply install that clip and that's going to hold that up. The system is going to include everything that you see here on the table. It does require a hitch ball that's going to be sold separately, and that's going to need to have an 1 1/4 inch diameter shank. Now on this unit, when it comes to the maximum tongue weight, we're looking at 500 pounds. The maximum gross towing weight is 10,000 pounds. The unit is designed for 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receivers that are rated for use with a weight-distribution system. The lift brackets are going to take up about 5 inches along the trailer frame, and the area that goes around the trailer frame, that's going to give us and opening of about 3 inches. Now I did mention earlier that this unit can be used in either the drop or rise position. When it's installed in the rise position, the maximum rise we're going to have, with the head assembly installed at the highest setting, is going to be 6 1/2 inches. That's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of our hitch to the ball platform. If we use this in the drop position with the head assembly at the lowest setting, that's going to give us a maximum drop of 1 1/2 inches, measuring from the same point. Again, we've got the snap-up lever that's going to ease our installation. All the hardware is included, and this is a really nice, solid, dependable weight-distribution system. That's going to do it for our review of part number PS49581.

Great quality product for the price. One third the price the camper dealer wanted for a similar hitch. Allowed me to level and control my vehicle while towing my trailer. 517287

The hitch works great. I'm not very mechanical but I was able to get the hitch put together with help from my brother. I've only used the hitch once so far but had no issues. Once it is all together it is very easy to use. 406433

This system was used with a RAV4 and a 14 foot tow behind camper. I would give 5 stars regarding the system's intended performance for weight distribution. My one reservation related to the requirement to jack the tongue up so high in order to reach the desired chain link. With one less link we experienced times when the lower end of the arms/U bolts dragged when going over things like speed bumps. 312908

The hitch was exactly as advertised and functioned very well. Used on a small travel trailer and it reduced the "tail wagging the dog" quite a bit. I would certainly recommend it. 309330

this hitch is VERY heavy-duty! put it together yesterday, easy to do. Instructions are well-done and shipment arrived on time. I have yet to connect to trailer but as far as workmanship of product, it's top notch! 296055

Hitch works better than I expected. It arrived on time and in perfect shape. If I had a complaint, it would be that the instructions are a little vague and the list of needed tools is wrong. I happen to have the experience and tools to interpret the instructions and install it correctly, but first timers should really have it professionally installed. It's a safety thing. 285660

I have a 2011 Dodge Nitro 4.0 liter compact SUV, which I am using to tow our Mighty Lite travel trailer. I needed a good weight dist. hitch to accomplish handling the 3850 GVWR of the trailer. This system brought up the towing capacity of our Nitro to 5000 lbs., and installs much easier than I expected! We had no sway problems during our 2 journeys with this system so far, even with the high winds we encounter up in the CA. high desert area where we live. My one complaint would be the heavy weight of the solid steel shank which will make you grunt when lugging it out from the shank, but since this hitch is rated up to 10,000 lbs. I guess that is to be expected! Otherwise, My I am VERY happy with the durability of this product, and the price was great. 228819

The hitch is doing great! Another nice thing about it are the grease fittings provided on the springbar sockets, allowing for quick lubrication of the springbars while hitch is installed. Great price for a great product!

This is a replacement for one that we were using with mismatched bars. Towing with the new and balanced system install has made a Hugh difference especially at freeway speeds. 311270

The hitch does a very good job of redistributing the hitch weight. I have an extended (12") shank so I can open my tailgate, and the hitch helps overcome this. The only problem is disconnecting the spring bars. The retaining pins for the spring bars have a very small flange to grip when pulling the pins to release the spring bars, and it can be hard to manipulate. Other than that, I am very satisfied with the hitch. 265515

I've always received great service from eTrailer and this transaction was no different. Having owned 5th wheel trailers in the past I had no experience with weight distributing hitches. I had a sales rep from Hensley trying to convince me I needed their $1700 set up but I liked the price of the RB3, however the adage, "You get what you pay for" was nagging me. My wife was also nagging me about spending $1700 on a hitch and since I like sleeping indoors, I went with the RB3. Tow vehicle - 2000 Ford Expedition 4x4 Eddie Bauer. 5.4l and factory towing package. Rated for 6800lbs Trailer - 2014 Dutchman 275. 27.5' no slides, empty weight 4618lb, gross 7800lbs, average towing weight 6000lbs I contacted the eTrailer techs to figure out what I needed capacity wise and placed my order. Hitch was shipped promptly and to my surprise was very well packaged. The cardboard box was robust. It was taped, stapled and strapped well beyond UPS's ability to destroy. Inside the parts were secured in fitted foam pockets so the paint was not damaged. All the parts were well painted and fit together correctly. The RB3 is stout and well designed. My only brief scare was the owners manual. The part number on the manual indicated I had received the lighter duty hitch however when I double checked the part numbers on the components, I had received the correct product. The instructions were clear and I had the hitch assembled and set up in about 2 hrs. Hitching up is simple once all the settings are dialed in. We went on a 900 mile maiden voyage that involved freeways with brutal cross winds, very steep mountain passes and narrow winding forest service roads with huge washouts. The hitch performed perfectly and I was impressed how well the Expedition-Dutchman combo performed. I didn't order the optional anti-sway and one time on the trip for about 5 miles we had an extreme crosswind that pushed us around and I had to slow down to 40mph. I blame that more on my Load range C tires on the Expy than the trailer pushing us. In checking on the Expedition forums, the consensus was Load range E tires would fix the sway problem. 210210

Review from a similar Pro Series RB3 in Weight Distribution

Can't speak highly enough of eTrailer.com's customer service. I had accidentally ordered the incorrect product spec for my setup (2015 F150 towing a 8.5x20 ATC toy hauler) and they were able to get me the correct product within the same week and provided an easy process for returning the incorrect hitch. Regarding the hitch itself, installation was a breeze, though I had to get a couple new tools due to the standard sizing of the nuts bolts, rather than metric. It would be very helpful if the instructions posted online would have a required tool listing with specific sizes required so you can be prepared ahead of time. After installing the hitch and taking initial measurements, it was very easy to fine-tune to get the setup perfect. Before installing the hitch, my truck would sit nearly 1.5 inches higher up front and 3 inches lower in the back with the trailer hooked up compared to stock, with very light steering feel when going down the road. With the hitch installed and dialed in, the front sits back at the stock height and only 1.75 inches lower in the rear, creating an essentially flat ride profile, and the trailer itself is perfectly level. Riding down the road the difference in feel is amazing. Much better steering response without the "light" feeling, tracks much more planted when going down the highway, and bumps and undulations in the road surface are absorbed much more smoothly now that both the truck and the trailer are sharing the workload. 322233

Thanks so much for your business and review, Ryan. The required tools for installation are listed in the upper left-hand corner of the instructions.

Great WD hitch - Great price- Prompt Shipping. Instructions were easy to follow, worked perfectly the first time. Night and day Towing experience. 2003 Suburban towing 21' keystone Hideout 3750 lbs, with tw of 600lbs the truck has soft OEM spring set up, and sits low already. First added air shocks to get rid of the sag, but the addition of the WD hitch made all the difference, before WD had to run 140lbs of pressure just to maintain ride height, now I only run 40lbs in shocks now and she sits perfect, not to mention Steering is normal and all the jerky pushing and pulling is gone its nice and smooth now. 185252

The system was relatively easy to install (read the instructions!). We have a Toyota Tundra which we use to tow a travel trailer. First used it with a 21 ft Micro Minnie (ca. 4,000 Lbs), and now we use it with a 27-ft Airstream, which weighs around 6000 Lbs. It makes a world of difference! The trailer tracks very well, and we have no need for additional sway control. Great investment! 564218

I recently installed a new trailer hitch on my 2002 Tundra Limited. I needed a receiver for the hitch as I intended to tow a 5000 lb boat and trailer combo. I was unsure of the drop needed for the trailer (which I had not yet seen) and felt the PS 49683 receiver was just the ticket! This setup is HEAVY DUTY! Proper height and drop setup is a breeze. Well made and should provide years of service. George from etrailer is excellent with his email communication and has kept me advised of the order status throughout the entire process from order to delivery. 541609

The only problem I encountered on the installation of the head was getting the washers on the rivet. Fingers too big and area too small, plus having to take the thing apart several times to get what seemed to be the best position for the spring arms in relation to the trailer tongue. • The shank that comes with Pro Series weight distribution system # PS49581 has a drop of 1-1/2 inches so for a shank that has 2-1/2 inches of drop you can use # C17100. But you may want to go with something that offers more rise/drop options just in case you need it in the future. For that I recommend # 17120. For a round bar weight distribution system it offers up to 5-3/4 inches of drop and up to 9-1/4 inches of rise. Both shanks listed above are compatible with your weight distribution...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a Trailer with 350 lbs of Tongue Weight
  • You want to pick out a weight distribution that has a tongue weight range that matches up well with the tongue weight of your trailer. Getting a system rated too high will result in an overly stiff ride, and if you go too low the system won't distribute any weight to the front axles. Right in the middle is ideal. For your 350 lbs of tongue weight the Reese Weight Distribution System # RP66540 would be ideal. This system has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs which would be ideal for...

  • Can I Upgrade the Spring Bars On A Pro Series Weight Distribution System
  • It sounds like you have the Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System with Shank part # PS49581. If that is the case then we do have the correct upgraded spring bars for you, the Replacement Round Bars for Pro Series Weight Distribution System part # PS58441 therefore you don't have to replace your entire system. These spring bars are rated for up to 1,000 lbs of tongue weight so if you need the higher capacity for your new trailer then this will be your most cost effective option. Please...

  • How to Mount Weight Distribution Spring Brackets on Tubular Trailer Frame
  • The trailer frame spring bar lift brackets in the Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System # PS49581 are clamp-on types designed to work with tubular trailer frames. The frame member does NOT have to be open to install the lift brackets. If you prefer bolt-on hangers Reese offers # RP58305 which bolt on to the sides of your trailer frame using included 3-1/2-inch bolts.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for a Ford F150 Towing a Jayco Jayflight Baja Trailer
  • To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The Pro Series weight distribution hitch # PS49583 you referenced will be more of an overkill because the tongue weight won't be high enough on a 3,200 pound trailer. The two I recommend are the Pro Series...

  • Do Pro Series Weight Distribution Systems Come without Shanks
  • The Pro Series weight distribution systems such as # PS49581 all include shanks. There are other systems that do not come with shanks such as Equal-I-Zer system # EQ37061ET. I have linked a video review that covers the features of the Equal-I-Zer systems for you.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2007 Dodge Nitro SXT
  • Weight distribution is a separate item. The Curt trailer hitch # 13334 has separate ratings when using a weight distribution system and when towing like normal (weight carrying). Your 2007 Dodge Nitro 3.7 liter with factory coolers installed is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight or 5,000/500 pounds when used with weight distribution (consult your owner's manual to confirm). If you are only towing the trailer one time for the move I say that weight...

  • Are Air Bags Needed to Tow Trailer with Weight Distribution System
  • If you have a properly rated weight distribution system for your 7,300 pound RV, then adding air bags to your 2014 F-150 should not be necessary. While technically the two systems can be used together, I do not recommend it as often they can actually work against each other. The best solution for reducing rear end sag on the tow vehicle caused by towing a trailer is a weight distribution system. Installing an air bag system works best when the vehicle sag is caused by heavy loads carried...

  • Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer with 393 lbs of Tongue Weight
  • If your loaded tongue weight is 393 lbs when you are ready to tow the RB3 part # PS49581 would be a great option as it has a tongue weight range up to 550 lbs. If you need more tongue weight range you would then want the part # PS49582 which goes up to 750. For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.

  • Replacement Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Stolen Husky WD Components
  • Sorry to hear about your weight distribution system getting stolen. Due to the price of the individual parts you need (head, ball and shank) it is most likely going to be a better option to replace the entire system. We only have the one replacement Husky head # HT31516 and when you combine it's price with a new shank like # RP3215 you are at the price of some systems. Actually a Pro Series Round Bar system like part # PS49583 would cost almost as much as just one of the above mentioned...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2014 Toyota Tacoma Towing TrailManor 2720
  • The key to selecting the correct weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) for your TrailManor 2720 is to load it up with all your usual gear and supplies and to measure its actual tongue weight (TW) in this road-ready condition. To this you need to add the weight of anything in the truck bed that sits behind the rear axle, such as a generator or loaded cooler. According to the TrailManor website the dry hitch weight for the different versions of the 2720 have a dry hitch weight of either...
