Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the equalizer weight distribution system with 4-point sway control, and weight distribution chain. With 6000 lbs gross trailer weight, and a 600 lbs tongue weight. Part number EQ37060ET. So you've decided you need a weight distribution system. The Equalizer weight distribution system uses steel on steel friction to help prevent and correct trailer sway. The sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your tow vehicle. Our spring bars flex appropriately over uneven terrain, for a more controlled and even ride without bounce. The system includes a head assembly.

It uses a traditional washer system to provide tilt in the head. The more tilt in the head, the more lift in the tongue weight. Because it uses the 4-point sway control, there are no chains. The spring bars are easily installed with the included lift handle. The whole thing is made out of a dipped steel construction, so it is going to be durable and resist rust and corrosion. As with all weight distribution systems, it helps your tow vehicle get back to a stock height with the added weight of a trailer.

Let's take a look at that now. I've gone ahead and removed the weight distribution and disconnected from the trailer. Let's go ahead and get a stock measurement of our tow vehicle. Here at the rear, we've got about 39-1/2" to the underside of the wheel well. At the front, I've got about 38-1/2". Now, you want to be sure and record these measurements, because these are the measurements we want to try and get back to when we engage our weight distribution system.

Now, I've gone ahead and hooked up my trailer to my tow vehicle without weight distribution. Now, let's take a look and see what the tow vehicle looks like. Here in the back, I'm squatting about an inch and here in the front, my vehicle is tilted upward about 3/4 of an inch. Weight distribution should correct that. Let's hook it up. Now, I've got my trailer hooked back up and my weight distribution engaged.

Let's go ahead and take another measurement on our tow vehicle. Here in the back, we're back to stock height and same with the front. Excellent. Not using a weight distribution system can cause issues with your traction, tire wear, and handling. Getting your vehicle back to stock with a weight distribution system can help prevent those problems. Now let's show you how it's installed. First to note about using a weight distribution system is you need to make sure your camper or trailer is fully loaded and ready to go. This ensures proper weight is being applied to your tow vehicle. The shank can be installed in either the rise or drop position. The head is adjustable along the shank. You just need to make sure that the top of the ball is level with the top of the coupler when your trailer is level. The kit includes eight washers to adjust the tilt of your head. You don't have to use all eight, you just need to make sure to use enough to get your vehicle back close to stock. Our spring bars fit inside the weight distribution head and are lifted on the L-bracket with the included tool. We can then place in our snap-L pin, to help keep the spring bar in place. This is where that steel on steel friction takes place, helping us with our sway control. Finally, our link plates are installed on our trailer's A-frame, with the L-brackets on the outside. You just want to make sure you avoid your battery box or your propane tanks. Those may have to be relocated. It needs to be positioned between 27" and 32" from the center of your coupler. If you've used all eight washers for your head tilt and your vehicle still isn't back to stock, you can adjust your L-brackets. That's going to complete our look, the equalizer 4-point weight control with shank. With a 6000lbs gross trailer weight and a 600lbs tongue weight, part number EQ37060ET.

Installed myself and spent a lot of time adjusting the torsion and test driving. Very pleased with the firmness and stability of the 4000 lb. trailer. There are periods when I hear some squeaking in back, but retightening all the hitch bolts seems to alleviate most of the noise. 643400

I purchased the EQ37060ET (6000 GTW-600 TW) last year and cannot say enough good things about it. It has performed flawlessly on my 2014 Toyoda Highlander, pulling our 21', 4000 lb Winnebago Mico Minnie. As the expression goes, "If I can hook it up, anyone can !" I've recommended to anyone who's in the market for a great weight distribution system. 334439

Excellent product. This is my 2nd Equalizer hitch. First one was a 10,000lb I used on my 29ft Keystone Camper that was around 8500lbs loaded towing with an 04 F250. I now have a 6,000lb I am using on my 6x12 V-nose around 3500lbs with a 600lb tounge weight towing with a 2016 Tacoma. These hitches make a world of difference when towing & are pretty easy to setup. Especially after doing it once lol. 579828

Etrailer is awesome! I called Monday evening and they answered my questions about the weight distribution hitches. I knew I wanted an Equalizer hitch but was unsure on the model. Etrailer recommended the 600/6000 model so I ordered it over the phone. They said it would take five days to ship to CA, but it was delivered today, on Thursday, and only took three days! Etrailer rocks!!! 525151

The new hitch allowed us to get our camper almost exactly level. It barely feels like we have something hooked to the truck. We get no wind pushing us around when trucks pass us on the interstate. It was easy to attach to our camper. Your shipment came in exactly when you said it would. Thank you very much for your good service and for the good hitch. 355315

I have loved your hitches since 1995. We pulled a camper for 10 years without one and basically started avoiding the interstate highways because of what happened when trucks passed us. The guy at the place we stored our camper had a used Equilizer that we bought and used for 12 years. We got a new tow vehicle with a higher hitch and the old Equilizer was welded and could not be adjusted. Thats when we bought the new one. I watch people at the campgrounds wrestling with other hitches and I just calmly hook mine up and go. I hardly feel the camper behind us. You have a great product and I will use it till I cant camp any more.

My forst equalizer hitch is a winner. Way easier to use than my friend's version with the chains ... Easy setup and works great on my 4,000 lb. camper. Almost completely eliminated sway from passing trucks, etc. Can back up without unhooking which is great. 662465

I can't speak on the hitch itself because I was never able to use it, but I hear great things. However, I want to save someone else the hassle here, so if your camper trailer has a propane or battery platform on the top side of the V hitch/tongue - you may need to do some serious modifications to put the brackets in the correct position. Check the manual and measure before you order! 660463

Hauling 21 ft. travel trailer. Big difference in how it tows with this hitch as opposed to hauling without an equalizer hitch. Highly recommend this hitch, none better. I have hauled around 4000 miles, mostly mountain roads in the west, with some good winds and my trailer is rock solid with this hitch. Do not tow without a equalizer hitch and if you want the best, get this one. Excellent customer service from e-trailer on this and everything I order from them. About to order rear stabilizer coupler and pins to fix electric stabilizer from them. 658944

I used this to tow my camper from N.J to the west coast. I know that this made a huge difference when towing in high winds and passing tractor trailers. I set this up myself and it was relatively easy. There are plenty of you tube videos to help.I would buy this again without hesitation. 629437

The Equalizer has been a great hitch. I needed the sway control more than the weight distribution in windy Kansas, and this hitch virtually eliminated sway. The weight distribution does alleviate bouncing and makes me feel completely in control of the trailer. I bought the pads to control noise, and I’m glad I did. No complaints. The only downside is that the hitch is heavy and bulky. I’ve yet to find a simple and clean place to store it. 616592

Ever since we purchased this Weight distribution system, we have been on 7 trips with our travel trailer. Every trip the system far exceeded our expectation. The built quality is amazing and by the looks of it, it will last a lifetime if taken care off properly. We would recommend this system to anyone planning to tow their travel trailer and wants the peace of mind that a gust of wind or fast-moving tractor trailer is NOT going to have you take evasive maneuvers. 610518

I have been using my Equalizer weight distribution hitch for a year now. It truly is the best hitch I have ever used. Towing through high winds in eastern Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming our trailer (a 21 foot Escape) tracked perfect with no sway what-so-ever. Also there was one occasion that I had to make a very sudden stop to avoid a deer running in front of me. The trailer was rock solid, with no sway. Thank you Equalizer. It took a little time to set up the system properly, but, with a little help from a few friends it was easy. I found it important to have a local tire shop assist in torquing everything to the recommended specs. Great product and lots of good support from eTrailer. 596391

Just installed this weight distribution system. It took me approx 3 hrs to set it up on my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It may warrent a 5 rating, but I have only towed my trailer on local roads. Even on local roads it drives smooth. Have not yet taken it on the highway. For the install, I purchased a Powerbuilt 643216 3/4-Inch Drive 12 Point 1-7/8-Inch Socket to install the ball. Worked fine. 590918

Perfect fit and function and easy to install. The ordering process was very simple and the item arrived in perfect condition and within about three days of ordering. The thin wall socket issue was solved simply by going to Harbor Freight and picking up a 3/4” drive SAE socket set that went up to a 2” socket for less than the price of the socket alone and it came with the ratchet necessary to tighten it. My tent camper and tow vehicle are perfectly level. Haven’t taken it out on a trip yet but I know it will ride much better than before as the front end was at least 3” higher than the back prior to putting on Equilizer Weight Distribution System. Thanks for carrying suck a great product. 565553

Would have been 5star. The hitch it well built and strong. I was told by the E-Trailer operator that it came with a 2in ball already installed. Come to find out it doesn’t. This is frustrating now our trip is going to be postponed or canceled. Apparently you need a special sockoand short thread 2in ball. Bummer 547922

I just drove from VT to PA to SC to MD to CT and back to VT, close to 3K miles and this weight distribution/sway control worked great ( I think it did, my first sway bar). Not sure on the effectiveness of the weight distribution as I was pulling with 2018 Jeep G.C. and that SUV does not sag under 500 lbs tongue weight. You can feel that you are pulling a trailer when a semi passes you going over 80 miles an hour, or when you get hit with a side wind on a bridge, but all other conditions are fine (e.g. passing semi truck or normal side wind). Easy to back up into any place. On advice to everybody, keep it lubricated, if you don't, enjoy screeching noise with every turn :). Happy towing. 543094

Excellent! This has been a great product for me. As a first time travel trailer owner I was concerned with the safety of towing a trailer and concerned with controlling swaying of the trailer and tow vehicle. I had towed a rental trailer once and got a good scare when it started swaying when I tried to pass a transport truck. I set this up using the provided instructions and all worked great. Tow vehicle is level and no swaying in traffic or in very windy conditions. I even had to change tow vehicles in the middle of an extended trip and the conversion to the new vehicle was very easy even though I was "on the road". I just followed the instructions again and all worked very well. I highly recommend this unit. 488881

I don't have any previous experience towing travel trailers to compare to, but I could definitely sense it's value and worth. On the first trip after installing the stabilizer, we encountered sustained winds and a large amount of truck traffic. The trailer was stable and tracked well. The installation is straightforward and took about 2 1/2 hours which included making a couple of adjustments and testing. 431546

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control in Weight Distribution

I received this hitch a few short days after placing my order and as soon as it arrived I unpackaged it to admire the contents. Everything was intact and ready to assemble, just as expected. I also ordered the special thin walled socket, which I am glad I did since my mechanic friend that did my torquing didn't have a socket that would work for this hitch ball. I know it is expensive but I wanted everything done right. I installed the hitch and set it up following the directions in the manual, and everything turned out perfectly. I think from start to finish it took the wife and I less than an hour and a half. Easy, and according to my measurements and a visual everything looked perfect. None of this is rocket science, and the installation is truly easy. Well, time to try it out, and what great timing, we left Saturday morning in a 40 MPH headwind for 20 miles, and then another 25 miles with the wind quartering at us on a busy highway. This hitch worked flawlessly! I was tickled with the whole ordeal, and today coming back with no wind at all it wasn't much different than the day we had the wind. You know what wind means, right? WINDY IN ND. Yep, we get our share. This hitch served us very well, and I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the ease of installation and set up. I would order it again in a heartbeat. My tow vehicle: 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with max trailer tow package. 6.2 L with 8 speed transmission. My travel trailer: 2016 Jayco Octane SL, weighs in loaded at 6100 lbs with a hitch weight of 910 lbs. 517401

A whole year has gone by, and Im still extremely satisfied with my equalizer hitch. I hear the squeaks when I make my turns, I know people talk about this hitch being slightly noisy, but every time I hear it I smile. I know its back there, doing its thing, and it does it extremely well. I would buy this hitch again in a New York minute. I am very pleased. Did I say Im VERY pleased? Lol. Its that good.

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control in Weight Distribution

Product was easy to install, following instructions that came with. Video's online also helpful. It was recommended to use thin wall 1 7/8" socket to tighten the hitch ball nut, but was able to get a impact socket into the space. The trick is to turn the square weight distribution receiver's out to the side. ( ie...perpendicular to the hitch receiver. ) They come from factory at a 45 degree angle, turn them out to 90 degree's. Then the socket fits in to tighten the nut. Great videos online from product on how to make sure your weight distribution is correct once installed on tow vehicle and trailer. 609508

12000 lbs. hitch was a great improvement over my previous bent bar hitch with chains. Trailer sway has decreased a lot. MY 35 foot trailer pulls straight except when it is windy. I am no longer bothered by passing vehicles. Was noisy until I added the nylon pads from equalizer. Much quite now. 610499

Keep in mind that the jackets or pads will decrease the effectiveness of the sway control to a degree because they limit some of the metal-on-metal friction which provides the sway control.

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control in Weight Distribution

I received this hitch about a month ago and couldn't install right at first due to some issues I was having but I have finally got it installed and set up right. This is great! I will go on my maiden voyage Memorial weekend but I'm sure it is going to perform as expected. Excellent price that no one can touch. Instructions are easy to follow and detailed the way it should be. Time, was about as expected, so don't rush because you don't want to miss any steps. 314559

Well I have owned this hitch for a year and it has worked flawlessly. In July we took our camper on a 2000 mile trip and we had no issues with the hitch at all. We were in all types of traffic through large and small cities, we didnt have any sway issues because the hitch, now broken in, works much better than I knew it would. I had installed the pads under the slide bars and use the grease to quieten it down when in all the turns I made during this trip. I dont believe there is a better hitch out there that can tame my 38 ft 9000lb Jayco than this Equalizer. Best money spent here. 11/7/17

Lindy was very helpful verifying the correct model for my new 19 ft TT. The hitch arrived in 2 boxes - very heavy! This hitch is built like it belongs on a tank - glad I purchased the hitchgrip carrying tool. All of the parts are heavy duty and well finished. The etrailer installation video on YouTube is very helpful to better demonstrate the installation manual instructions. My dealer installed the ball since they had the thin-wall socket. Everything installed easily and fit well. Need to load up the new TT and make final adjustments if necessary. 493532

This is one slick setup. I got it tuned in perfectly on the second try. Instructions are very specific and very accurate. I found only one thing that could be better - the bolts that hold the ball mount to the receiver bar are too long, at least 1" too long. A standard socket won't fit over them to torque the nut - shorter bolts or a warning that a deep socket is needed would be nice. This seems like an anomaly, as everything else was a perfect fit. Good price, speedy delivery, as always. One caution, this thing is heavy! 283591

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control in Weight Distribution

We made a trip to the Pacific Northwest from Arkansas and I have to say, the hitch performed perfectly. Even in a high wind, which is common in Wyoming and the plain states there was no problem keeping a straight line going down the road. One time, when I wasn't paying attention and ran off onto the shoulder of the road, the trailer didn't sway at all but kept straight and allowed me to return to the road without incident. I would recommend this hitch to anyone pulling a trailer of any significant weight behind them. I have a 33 foot RV and pulling it with a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500. 474796

Its been over a year since I purchased my Equalizer hitch system and I am completely satisfied with it. Occasionally I have to spray some lubricant on the pivot points on the receiver end to keep the noise down but other than that It works as advertised and I would again rate it 5 stars.

From my limited experience with the hitch, it appears to be very high quality. Have not had it out on a long trip yet, but did do a 20 mile road test with speeds up to 70mph and it was very stable. It is on a Toyota Tundra 5.7 and is pulling a 23.5 foot toyhauler that probably weighed around 6500 lbs. at the time of my short road test. 427957

Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Recommended Weight Distribution For Trailer With Total Tongue Weight Between 350 and 600 lbs
  • A weight distribution system that is rated too high for your total tongue weight of your loaded trailer and cargo behind the rear axle, can be an issue. You won't cause damage to your truck or trailer, but it can cause a rigid ride and in the worst cases can even cause the trailer to bounce which obviously means the traction isn't where it needs to be for proper control. Based on the info you gave, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion -...

  • Should 6,000 lb Equal-i-zer System be Used for Trailer with 550 lb Loaded Tongue Weight
  • It really depends on how much weight you plan on having in the back of your tow vehicle. Since the tongue weight (TW) range of a weight distribution (WD) system includes both the loaded TW of the trailer plus the weight of cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle the 1,000 lbs system # EQ37100ET may be better for your application because it has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs. If you don't plan on having any weight behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle then you possibly could...

I recommend the Brophy Hitch Extender with Step # ST18. With the proper weight distribution system, this extension is rated for up to 7,000 lbs and up to 700 lbs tongue weight.
