Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Integrated Active Sway Control

The TruTrack weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved primarily thanks to the specially designed system head.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings in Detents

On top of the trunnions, there are spring-loaded ball bearings that rest in detents built into the underside of the head. As you travel down the road normally, these ball bearings help to keep the trailer in a straight line by applying pressure inside these detents.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings out of Detents

When sway occurs, the trunnions move inside the head, causing the ball bearings to come out of these detents. When this happens, the ball bearings ride along internal grooves in the head as they work to return to the detents to snap the trunnion back in place. This action effectively returns your trailer to center.

TruTrack Spring Bar Bracket

Additional sway control is created by the spring bar brackets. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also permits a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Allowing the spring bars to hang freely also minimizes the tension described earlier. This limits your system's ability to hold your trailer in line behind your tow vehicle.

Not only do the brackets on the TruTrack work to constantly hold your trailer in line, but they also supply friction to force it back into place should any sway occur. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The TruTrack's spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, the TruTrack's spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Simple Spring Bar Setup

TruTrack Spring Bar Install

The support brackets of the TruTrack easily clamp onto your trailer frame to provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars on the brackets during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar onto an L-shaped bracket. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - C17501 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt TruTrack weight distribution system with integrated sway control. This unit does allow backing up and it's electric brake and surge brake compatible. Now this weight distribution system's going to evenly distribute weight over the axles of your tow vehicle and trailer for improved stability and control, which is going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and your trailer. Like I mentioned before it does feature integrated active sway control, that's going to limit the side to side movement of your trailer. Here at the head assembly we're looking at spring loaded ball bearings in the system head. These are going to rest and detents, what that does is it applies constant pressure, which is going to help the trailer stay centered at all times.

That's on both sides, that's a really nice design. For instance if you we're to try to push these bars closer together, you can actually feel that spring effect and it pushes them back out. That's always going to fight to keep the trailer in line, which is going to help prevent sway. The brackets are going to keep the spring bars in place for a rigid system that holds your trailer in line. It's going to feature steel on steel friction, which is going to help correct any sway that may occur. Now the spring bars are going to work with the brackets to transfer tongue weight evenly to the tow vehicle.

The spring bars are constructed of a forged steel construction. They secure in the system head with easy to use snap pins. The unit's also going to feature a snap up handle. This allows you to get the proper leverage needed to actually get the bars in place on the brackets. These are no drill clamp on brackets. They mount directly to your trailer frame.

Here at the head assembly, when you need to get that desired tilt or that angle that you need for your application, you can do that using the two included adjustment rods. You'll use one or the other. It's going to come with a short and a long adjustment rod to get the angle you need. The short rod can be used with the included washers. The unit's also going to feature a set bolt at the bottom of the head assembly that you can tighten to kind of secure that angle or tilt in place.

Located at the back of the sleeve here, I'm calling this portion a sleeve, that's where the bar slides into. At the back of that is a grease zerk. That's going to be one grease zerk located on each side. The grease zerks at the head assembly make for easy maintenance. You can just attach a grease gun on there, pump the grease in that you need when you're ready to maintenance the system. We're looking at a steel construction. Everything is going to have a really nice black powder coated finish. It's very strong and durable. It's also highly resistant to rust and corrosion. The other thing I want to mention is that the head assembly does come with a pre-installed 2 and 5/16 inch hitch ball. The maximum tongue weight capacity for this unit is 1,500 pounds. The maximum gross towing weight is 15,000 pounds. It does come with the shank that goes inside the receiver tube of your hitch. It's going to come with a hitch pin and clip to get it secured in your hitch. It is designed for a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver that is rated for use with weight distribution systems. The sway control bracket positioning needs to be about 4 inches from the end of the spring bar. What I like is here on the sticker it's got a line there that says 4 inches. It has that built in indicator. That just makes for easy positioning and it makes positioning quick and easy. Now the adjustable frame brackets, they're multi hole design, hardware's included. All the necessary hardware you need to get it installed is included. These are adjustable frame brackets that fit trailer frames up to 6 inches tall by 4 inches wide. You can use the shank in the rise or drop position. If you have it in the drop position and the system head at the lowest setting, it's going to give a maximum drop of about a half of an inch. That's measured from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. If you have it in the rise position, with the head assembly at the highest setting, it's going to give you a maximum rise of 6 inches doing those same measurements. I did those measurements with the system head as square as possible with the shank. Now the shank does feature 6 adjustment holes. Those are going to be separated on center by an inch and a quarter. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt TruTrack weight distribution system with integrated sway control.

The frame brackets need to mount to the trailer frame about 4 inches forward of the end of the spring bar, which ends up to be approximately 30 inches rearward of the trailer ball. If that particular point of the trailer frame isnt accessible, a standard chain-suspended system using brackets that bolt to the side instead of around the trailer frame are recommended.

Used my weight distribution w/sway control about 10 times last year. I pull a 36' camper travel trailer thats 12,500 # and 1,300 # tongue weight with no problems. Love that there is less to hook up with the built in sway control. Very heavy application. Built strong as exspected from Curt. Like to say i would buy another but won't need to because this is built to last for sure. Very Happy Camper !! 487559

It was great working with etrailer. Ordering the Curt 17501 weight distribution hitch was very straight forward. Was very happy with the price but I ran across another company advertising the same hitch $40 cheaper. etrailer immediately refunded the advertised 110% difference and put $45 back on my card. Also, when they found out I was needing to get the hitch by a certain day they made sure it was shipped promptly. The hitch arrived right on time and was very well made. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. 411678

I did some extensive research & I believe that this product was a great value for what it was capable to do for me. I received the Curt TruTrack on time. The installation was simple to follow. e-trailer has good how-to videos as well as Curt's site. When I pulled my 1st load with the Curt using my 2014 Tundra the ride was much smoother & zero sway. The weight distribution was incredible! Before installation I checked the ride height on front & rear. Without the Curt installed my Tundra did have 3" more sag in the rear. With the Curt system installed now I only have 1" sag in the rear. This was a quick fix to evenly distributing the weight & stability towing 11,500lb GCW total. 334471

I bought the C17501 weight distribution hitch and due to others saying they had holes in their boxes I inspected mine carefully and took pictures before opening. The box mine came in seemed surprisingly durable, but there was a hole in the box on one end. After prying open the box and inspecting everything, I realized that although all the nuts and bolts were there, there were no spring bars in the box! My guess is that someone stole them....I find a 3 foot pole falling out of the box a little hard to imagine unnoticed by anybody. I called etrailer and they sent me a form to email them pictures and the next day the spring bars were shipped out! etrailer rocks at service! I now have all the parts and am looking forward to setting this bad boy up and towing my trailer. I'll try and come back and edit after I actually use the product. So far this things is looking nice though. 459085

Thought I was upgrading my Husky 12k to a 15k.....not the case. My truck squats 2” lower than with the husky. If I add any more pre load to the torsion bars, they look like bananas. The brackets are really light compared to the Husky. My advise, spend the extra and get the Equalizer. After putting my eyes on an Equalizer 15k, it is 2x more robust than this cheap knock off. I wish my husky would have been 15k. [Just Saying] I bought this based on the reviews... $500 wasted. Hoping to unload it 715777

Stopped the sway of the trailer. Fairly easy to install. The sway bar supports are wearing faster than I thought they should. 711129

- C17501
by:

I have had these for a year. They work but the disappointing part is the thin metal on the supports on the trailer that hold the weight distribution bars tend to bend a little and don’t instill confidence. They do their job but another kit with stronger bar supports might be in my future. 704499

I was skeptical about "weight distribution hitches" until I purchased and put this product to use. I have never had a non-fifth wheel towing experience be so great. I tow a 7'x18' trailer, with 9'4" height, and a 10,000lb GVW behind a Chevy Express 3500. When I bought the trailer I towed it home without a distribution hitch. The trailer was empty of course but I could tell it was there. When the product arrived, I installed it, and drove 2200 miles round trip to move my son and his family back to our home state. The only difference between loaded and empty was how hard the van had to work. The trailer towed like it was part of the vehicle. On our trip we encountered varying weather conditions from 108 degrees to moderate winds with heavy rains. None of it had much of an impact on how the trailer pulled at all. Several hundred miles were done with a mild to moderate cross wind that made almost no difference to handling. I'm extremely impressed and will recommend this product to anyone looking. 697072

Bought this for my Wolfpack 25pac 12 toy hauler . I was never able to control the sway with this hitch. Not sure if it was the hitch or just a poor design of the camper. Sold both after about 5 months. 608302

The two most important factors in using a weight distribution system is to choose the correct system for your needs and to set the system up correctly. This system is intended for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 1000 to 1500 lbs. Youll want to use a tongue weight scale when your trailer is loaded as it typically would be for travel to determine your actual tongue weight. Dont forget to include the weight of anything stored in the tow vehicle behind its rear axle in that tongue weight figure as well. Its extremely important to follow the set-up instructions exactly, or there wont be enough tension on the spring bars which can cause poor handling or sway. Sometimes theres a problem with the suspension, axle or wheels and no matter whats done with the weight distribution system, a good ride cant be achieved. Make sure the wheels and tires are in good repair, as well as the suspension.

Used on a 20' V-front enclosed snowmobile trailer to help eliminate some weight distribution and sway issues. This hitch has been a night and day improvement in towability and drivers comfort when using this hitch on my trailer. It was reasonably priced, featured the way I needed and has worked perfectly. I completed the install myself, paying close attention to the instructions - which were clear and complete. Most important factor is to accurately determine loaded hitch weight. I would absolutely recommend this hitch for someone looking to improve the towing experience with their trailer. 598269

Overall this is great system for the price. We have it on our 25 ft toy hauler and use it at least once a month for the last year. Never used any system like this previously so there was a bit of a learning curve, but we’re pros at it now. Knocked off a star for the so-so installation instructions and cheap pin quality, but it does the job! Would definitely recommend. 581211

I purchased this WDH to pull a 29-foot travel trailer behind my F-150. Other than the fact that the hitch head is heavy, hitching and unhitching are simple and the hitch has worked as expected. 566330

Ive had the Curt TruTrack for about two years now. No complaints. About a month ago I did some touch up painting of the hitch components. In the process, i laid the clips that hold the bars on the bumper of the truck and drove off, losing the clips. I wasnt able to use the bars taking the trailer back to the storage shed. Boy what a difference. Luckily it was only seven miles.

You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. Since your trailer is 7,500 lbs...

  • Does Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution Shank have the Rise/Drop to Tow Trailer Level w/2016 F-250
  • Given that your 2016 Ford F-250 is a 4x4 and has large tires on it there is a good chance that the shank included with Curt weight distribution system # C17501 doesn't have enough drop to tow your trailer level. First we need to figure out how much drop (or rise if the trailer coupler is taller than the hitch receiver) is needed. With the truck and trailer on level ground but not hooked up to each other there are a couple of measurements needed. Measure from the ground to the top of...

  • Effect of Using Extra-Long Ball Mount for Towing
  • Use of an extra-long ball mount like # 80232 will not reduce a hitch's towing weight capacity the way that use of a separate extender/adapter will. Extenders like # C45791 and # D-192 actually do reduce the hitch towing capacity by 50-percent. Weight distribution hitch systems such as # C17501 should not be used with any type of hitch extender or adapter. A friction sway control unit like # 83660 can be used with an extra-long ball mount like # 80232 by adding a sway control bracket...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Trutrac System Digging Into Brackets
  • Based on your photo, the system was not setup correctly so the bars that should be applying friction to the brackets evenly is only hitting on that inside edge of the bar. That will not carry the weight correctly and definitely can cause scary sway. The head of the system needs to be positioned correctly and so do the brackets for proper function. I highly recommend you correct the alignment of the system and replace the brackets with the Replacement Frame Brackets for Curt TruTrack...

The upgrades you have done to your truck are really nice so I can see why you don't want to change vehicles. The only difference is that the part # C17063 comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball and a friction sway control whereas the part # C17057 doesn't come with either option. I recommend going with part # C17063 because you will need a hitch ball anyways and the sway control will help to reduce sway that you would experience from wind and passing vehicles. Please note that the sway control...

  • Curt or Equalizer Weight Distribution Recommendation for 30 ft Camper

The part # EQ37120ET would be the better option. The Curt systems like the part # C17501 aren't terrible systems but they are essentially Curt trying to copy the Equalizer design. We have also had a few issues with the frame brackets of the systems bending so we don't recommend them as high as the Equalizer. To install...
