Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.


Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.


To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.


Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Spring Bars

Unlike other weight distribution systems, the SwayPro has automatically locking brackets throughout. Both spring bars insert, slotted side up, into the head assembly and then lock securely in place. Removal is just as easy - simply lift the locking pins on the trunnions and slide the bars out. Blue Ox spring bars are interchangeable with each other. If you buy a new trailer or tow vehicle and you need to increase or decrease your capacity, you can simply buy new spring bars instead of purchasing a whole new system.


Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.


Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.


Built-In Tension Stops Sway

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System with Sway Control in a clamp-on design. For demo purposes as well as the quick installation, we're going to be using part number BXW1000. This SwayPro weight distribution system that we're using today is rated for 10,000 pounds maximum gross trailer weight with a maximum 1,000-pound tongue weight. Now we're going to go ahead and take our vehicle and the trailer for a test drive with the original set up. There's no weight distribution or no sway protection or prevention on our set up as it stands. Go ahead and show you how much movement as well as how uneasy the feel the tow vehicle has.

There's a lot of sway or side-to-side motion with the weight of the trailer. Now let's go ahead and begin how we would install our new Blue Ox SwayPro system. We've gone ahead and made sure that our trailer and our tow vehicle are parked in a straight line. We've gone ahead and disconnected the trailer from the tow vehicle. Now that we have everything disconnected, we can go ahead and scoot our tow vehicle forward a little bit. Now that we have the trailer unhitched from the tow vehicle, we can go ahead and level the trailer up itself.

You can see we have our trailer level. With our trailer level, we can turn our attention over to our tow vehicle. We need to remove the existing ball mount. Next, we're going to need to go ahead and measure the coupler here on our trailer and when we measure up, the top here we got 21 inches with the trailer level. There's one additional we need to go over here on the head of the SwayPro. You'll notice there's two little grease fittings here.

You will need to grease these periodically so that your SwayPro gives you long life and everything stays lubricated like it should. Next, were going to go over here and here's our shank that goes into the receiver. You'll notice that it has seven holes on it because it can go either this way or this way. For this particular vehicle, we're going to put it going up. It does have a 0 to 5 inch adjustability built into it so depending on your particular tow vehicle and trailer, it is adjustable.We'll go ahead and put our receiver shank into the receiver.

Put our 5/8 pin and clip in to secure it. Next, we're going to need to put the hitch head under the shank that's in the receiver. Now, we need to get a measurement of the top of the ball which you will need to supply separately. It does not come with the Blue Ox SwayPro system. You need the top of the ball measurement to be one to two inches higher than your coupler height. For our instance today, were at 21 inches on the trailer coupler height so we need to be 22 to 23 inches to the top of the ball. We're just going to temporarily set the ball in the hitch head for now so we can get our adjustment. Go ahead and slide the head onto the receiver. We'll take a couple of the 3/4 inch bolts. Just go through the holes to hold it in place for now. Now that we just have it temporarily set up, we can go ahead and take another measurement and from the ground to the top of the ball here, we are at 23 inches, so we're within the 1 to 2-inch height difference so this looks like thats a good location to secure the head to the receiver shank. While we may have been able to get our height needed with the receiver shank here flipped over to help eliminate any possibility of dragging or hitting something with this part hanging down, we went ahead and flipped it over. As you can see where there's still plenty of clearance. You don't have anything dragging here. It'll all depend on your particular application whether this is facing up or facing down. Now the ball we're using today is an inch and a quarter diameter shank so it fits in the head properly. If your ball only has a 1 inch shank, they do supply a coupler tha'tll go over it like that and drop into place taking up the excess room in the head of the receiver here. The hitch ball the we're using today is a 2-5/16 diameter with a 12,000-pound maximum gross trailer weight rating and its part number 19286. Here's the Loctite that we'll need to add to each of the threads here before we install the 3/4 inch lock nut and 3/4 inch hex nut for each. The red Loctite that we'll be using today is Loctite Thread Locker 262, part number LT37420. Next, we can go ahead, tighten down the hardware here. With the hardware tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque it down to the manufacturers specification. Next, you're going to need to secure the ball to the hitch head. To make things a little bit easier, I'm going to go ahead and flip over our whole set up here in the receiver. It makes things a little bit easier. If you turn it sideways like that, it'll make things a little bit easier to torque down the nut that secures the hitch ball. We'll need to install the lock washer that comes with the ball as well as the nut. We'll go ahead and tighten and torque down the ball to the manufacturers specification. Now that we have the hitch ball torque down, again make sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions for mounting the hitch ball to the head of the receiver.We'll go ahead and turn the whole thing back to the upright position. Line up the hitch pin hole. Put our 5/8 pin back in place as well as the clip. Go ahead and take another quick measurement to make sure we're still where we were before, right at 23 inches still. Our coupler height is at 21 so we should be good. Now, we're ready to go ahead and hook back up to our trailer. We'll go ahead and raise the trailer back up so we can back our tow vehicle underneath the coupler and we can hitch things up. We can go ahead and lower our trailer down under the ball. Next, we're going to need to measure back 29 inches from the center of our coupler along our frame here on our trailer. Go ahead and put a mark here on our trailer. Go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. Here's what our rotating latches look like. They come with this larger bolt but depending on your frame of your trailer, you may need to replace the bolt with this shorter one. It will all depend on how wide your trailer is or if this bolt here is too long and has an obstruction. You do get two of these with the kit as well if you need to replace them. In our particular application, this particular short bolt is too short to work properly so we'll be using the longer bolt that's already installed. You'll notice that it also a jam nut here once everything is installed. We'll go ahead and line up the bolts here with our mark we made. Go ahead and get that centered up.Then go ahead and just hand-tighten down the bolt in the back for now. Go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. Setting up the Blue Ox system itself is identical except for the bars are different and you can tell by the different dots underneath which size kit you have. The way you can tell the difference, just by looking at them it's kind of hard to do that but when you look right here, there's these little dimples or dots. Three dots means that its a 1,000-pound spring bar. Just for comparison, we have one here. It looks identical to it but this one here only has one dot on it. That means its a 550-pound bar. They range anywhere from no dots which is a 350-pound bar all the way up to five dots which is a 2,000-pound bar. After we have our spring bar in, kind of hold up where it would be, i'ts going to be right in the middle.We can go ahead and tighten and torque down the nut to the manufacturers specification. Once that's done, we can go ahead and take the jam nut. Tighten that down as well. Go ahead and tighten down our nut here. Go ahead and torque it down then. Then go ahead and tighten down the jam nut. We'll then go ahead and repeat the same process over on the other side. Let's go over a little more detail how the bar slides in to the head of the hitch. Theres a hole drilled into it right here. Tha'ts what lines up with this little release mechanism right here. You want to make sure that that's always facing up. You'll slide it into place until that drops back down in securing the bar in position. Now let's go ahead and show you how to connect one of the bars in with the latch mechanism. We've gone ahead with the trailer coupler to the ball. We've used the trailer jack to raise up the front end of the trailer as well as help hold up the weight on the back end of the tow vehicle. We've gone up pretty high as you can see. That'll make connecting our bar here a lot easier. A good starting point is to have about three lengths visible on the bottom of this latch mechanism here once it's flipped back into position. Let's go ahead and go over how these work. You pull the handle here and that releases them. Allows them to pivot down and then as you turn it using the handle, locks it back into place. We'll go ahead and show you how one works. Go ahead and take the chain. There's a little groove built into the mechanism here, drops in like that. The chain into position and by having the trailer jacked up like this, it makes it much easier to turn this mechanism right here into position. Take the bar. Turn it counterclockwise until you hear it snap or lock into position. You notice that there's a lot of tension on the bar and it also does have some bow to it or flex to it. That is what it's supposed to do, that is normal. That's what helps with the weight distribution as well as stopping any sway to the trailer. We'll go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. With both of the bars connected, we can go ahead and lower the trailer down.We've gone and taken the weight off the jack so all the weight is on the vehicle now. Let's go back over here to our level on the side of trailer. If you'll see here, if you remember from the beginning, we started at four and four with the trailer level not hooked to the tow vehicle at all and now that we are hooked to the tow vehicle, we are level on the trailer. We're pretty well right where we want to be set on the height of the hitch head as well as the tension on the bars. Now we'll go ahead and take it out for another test drive and show you what it looks like with the new Blue Ox SwayPro hooked up to our trailer. Now that we have our new Blue Ox SwayPro system installed, you can see how much better the vehicle handles pulling this trailer. Theres a lot less movement in the vehicle and you have a lot more secure or stable feeling in your tow vehicle as you're going down the road. You don't have any sway or movement of the trailer. Let's go ahead and get a baseline of what our vehicle is without the trailer connected to it at all. From the ground to the bottom of the wheel well, we're about 36-1/4 inches. Come up to the front here and were about 35-1/8 to 35-1/4 inches from the ground to the bottom of the wheel well. Now let's go ahead and take some measurements now that we have our SwayPro set up on the vehicle. From the ground to the bottom of the wheel well, we have 35 inches here at rear. We move up to the front, it appears at the front we have about 35-1/8. We're pretty even with the Blue Ox SwayPro set up on our vehicle and trailer and that'll do it for our quick look as well as installation of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System with sway control and the clamp-on style.

The hitch works very well. Im not a fan of the wrench Blue Ox supplies to rotate the cams. I had a situation where the pin didnt lock the cam in place due to dirtsnow/ice but didnt notice. When I relaxed the tension on the cam, it rotated back down and smacked my had against the frame rail. I now use a 15 breaker bar with a 3 extension to give my hand some clearance- just in case it happens again!

In the box are two 12 SWL 3300lbs quick link shackles. Not shown in parts or instructions. Do these have a purpose? Also the 12mm threads on the clamp-on rotating latches for the tightening bolts were painted, thus the bolts would not screw into the clamp. I had to use a tap to clean out the threads. Have only used it to drive 15 miles from my trailer dealer to home, but I think I'm going to like this WDH. It seems to do the job, is relatively easy to use. The dealer I bought my trailer from mounted it for me, they'd done many before so it went quickly. Some hints I'd learned from them and discussion forums - use the trailer jack to lift the front of the trailer/back of the truck to make it easier and safer to install or remove the chains. Use a long breaker bar with a 1" socket for the same reason - the extra leverage over that with the tool supplied with the hitch helps. I painted the chain link on each side that the dealer hooked to so I could get the tension back the way they had it. Will have to see how that works out in the long run, may have to adjust up or down. FWIW, I measured the distance from the ground to the top of the front and rear fender wells on my truck before and after hooking up the trailer with the BO Sway Pro. The front ended up exactly where it was before, the rear dropped only one inch with 1000 lbs of hitch weight. I'd say the WDH is doing its job! 462535

Ive purchased a pair of the little u-bolts and four self locking nuts from e-trailer, so Ill be prepared if they ever do rub or break off completely.

I have both an Equalizer and this Blue Ox hitch. I purchased the Blue Ox after I complained of a poor ride with my travel trailer to the dealer. They recommended Blue Ox instead. Frankly it didn't improve the ride at all. Worse, the bars hung so low that they scraped on every speed bump. However this was exacerbated by the way I had to set it up to make the ride at least tolerable. I have now changed travel trailers and tried both hitches on the new one. The new travel trailer sits significantly higher and rides much better. I don't have the problem of the bars hitting the ground. The ride also seems much better then when I use the Equalizer. The final problem I have with this hitch is the that saddle that holds the chains seems to stick very frequently and requires that I release the pin and force it to release the chain with the provided wrench - resulting in frequent minor injuries. Not sure why this happens but I'm getting better at forcing the release with no injuries. Just irritating. 289769

Finally got around to installing the Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch with bolt on chain latches. The process was straight forward after viewing youtube vids, taking time to be sure all my measurements were correct. With the bolt on chain latches you do not get many chances to get it right. I could not use clamp on as my V-nose RV did not have room above the frame to clear the clamp on latch.. drilling was a pain as clearances on my frame were tight and I had to go around a electrical junction box on the inside of the frame.. but once on, it was a breeze to set up. The overall quality of the hitch was great and I don't miss having to set the angle of the hitch head (it's fixed) making the only adjustments necessary was hitch height and chain length. I initially set mine up using 9 links on the chain, but once I got out on the road, I noted the RV was riding nose low so I went up to 10 links on the chain. Now the truck and RV are level, the truck rides and handles as I expected. I have not had the rig out on a long haul, so I can't comment about the sway control of the hitch.Truck is a 2013 Ford F150 ecoboost, max tow 3.73 gears, rv is a 6600lb (empty) V-nose 25ft toy hauler. I like the chain latch set up. Easy to use especially on a V-nose trailer. The concept of sway control with the short length chain is feasible and after this week trip (with some interstate time), I will report back if it doesn't work as advertised. All in all I am happy with the hitch and of course happy with the eTrailer purchasing process. 102170

For Etrailer, A+ for excellent customer service as usual! Shipping was very quick. Regarding the hitch, I think this one is going to be a real winner. Installation was quick and easy. Anyone with basic tools can easily install and setup this hitch. The only thing most people won't have is the 1 7/8" socket needed to tighten the nut that secures the ball to the hitch itself. You'd also need a torque wrench or impact wrench that can achieve [specs]. Instead, I just took it to a local shop. It took them two minutes and they didn't even charge me. After installing and setting up the hitch, I took measurements of the height of the truck's front fender both hitched and unhitched. It was exactly the same, which as I understand is ideal. Without any weight distribution, the front of the truck rises about 1/2" when you drop the trailer on the ball. Have used the SwayPro for 1 year now and overall very satisfied. I tow a 23' Airstream which weighs about 5500 lbs. The receiver hitch mount that comes with the SwayPro was unable to get the ball low enough as instructed in the Install Instructions so I gave Blue Ox a call and they immediately shipped out the one I needed and I shipped them the original. The BO SwayPro is fairly easy to operated and is quiet. I will say that it does not eliminate sway, I have tried several different adjustments but anytime I drive above 65mph, especially in headwinds or gusty conditions, sway is possible. The sway is manageable by slowing and never gets too bad but it will make you grip the steering wheel tighter. I was not surprised by this, just had a hard time shelling out the $2500 needed for the non-swaying hitches. 407456

The Blue Ox is performing fine, it does not eliminate sway but as long as I drive 65 mph or less, sway is rarely an issue. As you go over 65 sway can happen with adverse winds, semis passing, or poor road conditions. One other nuisance, is when I attempt to disconnect the chain on the right side, the chain sometimes gets wedged in the metal channel that you rotate and will not release. Usually I have to spray the area with a lubricant and then rotate the whole “chain engaging device” back and forth and the chain will become unstuck so that I can get the bar off. All else is fine, sometimes I do wish I had bought the Pro Pride but that seems a bit too complicated, heavy and expensive.

I replaced a broken old Eaz-lift hitch with this one on a 10k cargo trailer. The difference in ride quality is night and day. Well worth the step up in price. I feel like I'm driving a Cadillac compared to before. Set-up was easy, instructions were clear and concise. I greatly enjoyed not having to set the angle as it is built in. (Less to adjust, less that can go wrong/break). I do a lot of backing up at sharp angles as I use my trailer for food deliveries in tight spaces behind small restaurants/stores. I've not had any issues with this hitch while doing so. My load weights also vary greatly from beginning to end of day (full vs. empty). It is as smooth empty as it is full. The bars have a broad tongue weight rating range which works great for my application! I've not had it long enough to comment on long-term durability, but it is built tough and engineered smart. The unit is quite heavy and you need to make sure you have the space to mount the chain take-up brackets (the proper distance down the trailer arm), other than that the unit is fairly easy to use and stopped my 14 foot Sportsman Travel Trailer from swaying when traveling 70 mph. Before I added the anti-sway unit it was a scary proposition to travel over 60 mph. Felt a little like you were losing control of the trailer. Now, I feel more confident that all is well. I have had the Blue Ox BXW1003 for a year now and overall we are pretty happy with it. With our previous camper (Dutchmen) we were using a Draw-Tite WD hitch with a separate friction sway control bar. When we bought our new Jayco camper, we had a different A Frame design (underslug coupler) and it is a much bigger camper so we needed to upgrade the hitch. We liked chain style connection of the Draw-Tite but didn't like having to get out and remove the friction sway control bar when backing into a site. With the Blue Ox we just pull up to the site, someone hops out to guide clear the site as we back right in. It is nice to have a chain setup because there are times where I need more spring assist than others. For instance, we dry camp from time to time and have an A Frame Shelf above the propane tanks for our generator. The dealer recommended the Blue Ox over the equalizer because of this changing load requirement and it has worked. The only reasons I am not giving it 5 stars is because there are times where I have to fight with the release pin a bit. You have to turn the cam a bit to get it to release. It isn't a big deal and doesn't happen all the time but enough to stick in the back of my mind. The tool for turning the cam is a bit short and because of the A Frame shelf I have to be careful about where I put it on or as I turn the cam, it could pinch my hand up against the shelf mount. Like many people, I just got a big socket and breaker bar to replace the included tool. In my case I already had the breaker bar for torquing the wheels so I just needed a socket. Because the socket pivots it can't pinch your hand and is longer so more leverage. Also a drawback is because of the design, if we were get a new trailer that maybe doesn't use an underslung coupler, but the same weight as our current camper, we would have to buy a new hitch as well. This is because there are different models based on hitch type, where an Equalizer can be adjusted to accommodate either coupler style, the Blue Ox can't. Sure you could probably replace the parts needed to convert it or just buy a new one. This is a minor thing in my book and the nice part about this is that it makes it much easier to set up at home since there are not as many points of adjustment. If we didn't change our load frequently depending on where we are going and traded in campers every other year, then we would have been better off going with the Equalizer. For us the Blue Ox was the better fit. I will say that before buying I contacted Blue Ox's Customer Support as I had a question. I wanted to make sure I had the right model to work with the coupler on our camper. I was 80% sure I was right but didn't want to get there to pick it up and find out it wasn't the right one. Not only did they clear that up but the rep reached out to engineering and asked about my tow vehicle so they could verify that the included drop hitch was the right one. I decided to give a SwayPro hitch a try when I purchased a new TT (37' TT). The previous two Equalizer hitchs (24' TT and 33' TT) I had owned worked fine, but I hated having to stop and get out to tighten/loosen the anti-sway device when having to maneuver around and they were noisy. I installed the SwayPro myself, it was very easy to do. The instructions are clear, and the online videos very helpful. I waited to make this review until after making a couple of trips with the trailer. The trailer is very locked in behind the vehicle and that sucking over as a large vehicle goes past was non-existent, was very surprised and happy. I expected a little of this since this trailer is taller and longer than my last ones. Love being able to remove the equalizer bars and store in the trailer compartment without worrying about getting grease everywhere. Super easy to get hooked up and ready to go. I spent a few dollars more getting the SwayPro. Let me start off by saying why I wanted sway control. My first trip up Oregon's I5 between Eugene and Portland with my 28' Komfort Lite trailer in a moderate cross breeze, lots of semi's and fast traffic. Not a good first time experience, slowed from 60mph to 50mph to make it tolerable for me. Saw other trailers zoom by me at much faster speeds and looked to be pretty solid-no sway. Had no clue which system to choose, so I looked at all that was available on the site. Many looked very complex and the reviews on each were mostly positive. So, I choose to go simple with the Blue Ox, easy 20 min bolt on. Did have to make a 1/2" adjustment on the latch brackets, as per the instructions, to have the chains straight up and down. I haven't been on the road yet, but my initial hook up attempt has highlighted a couple of issues. First, with all the tongue weight on the TV, there is no way you will be able to attach the chain where you want it. No biggie, as with the old system, just use the tongue jack to raise everything up until you can get to the link you want. Had to go higher than I was used to, but still OK. Second, when unhooking (again, with weight on tongue jack), knuckles come very close to the spring bar on one side. Don't get distracted when rotating the latch to release the chain! Also, the chain wants to "snap" out of the slot at some point when rotating. I may want to retire the supplied wrench and go with a socket, short extension, and breaker bar just to keep my hands away from these potential hazards. As always, the ordering process was great. I purchased this hitch system to pull a 10,500 pound V-nose enclosed 8.5'x28' - 8' high trailer. I had to purchase the 1500 pound tongue weight system and because of the cargo that's loaded. I had to cut off 3 inches of the bottom of the receiver, because it hung down to low. I pull all of this with the 2016 ford F150 Max trailer package which sits lower than a heavy duties, that's where I attribute having to cut off 3 inches because it was scraping into the ground as I drove. Other than that issue this hitch system all but removes every bit of sway up to approximately a 45 mile an hour side wind. It is so simple to back up with the system as well, not having to remove the bars is awesome. If you are trailering anything with the F1 50 you should also purchase a spring package for the rear leaves to help with the tongue load is well. Now that we worked The bugs out it is a great system and will continue to use this on all trailers until something better comes along, I could not recommend this enough !!!! 421202

The Blue Ox stopped the sway and smoothed out the ride when loaded. The only issue I have is that once you disconnect the trailer, the weight of hitch is pretty heavy and you cannot drive around with it in. I can carry it but is heavy. Replacing a Reese weight distribution hitch w/sway control that wasn't up to the job. Blue Ox controls sway well and tows much more smoothly-vibrations with old hitch eliminated. Only dissatisfaction is with the paint. Several nicks/chips in the paint as delivered and over time some rusting of the latch mechanisms. Called Blue Ox-they said no touch up paint available. I had the unfortunate experience with having your new airstream 20' taken out by a hydroplaning car last month. The airstream rolled right and on to its side, and the hitch released keeping our Suburban from rolling. The stabilizer bars and chains maintained the trailer connection and eased the stop with the rear tires of ground. All went well until I tried to install the ball which has a 1& 7/8" nut which requires a socket to tighten the nut in the hitch enclosure. Not having that size socket I could not find one that size in the local retail stores. I have resorted to buying an Altrade socket on line from Home Depot for $14. Hopefully it will fit in side the hitch nut enclosure. 145514
