Product Expert Lindsey S's Opinion

Why would I buy this?

  • Great at preventing sway by holding trailer firmly in place at the system head and along the frame
  • Industry leading Equal-i-zer brand does weight distribution hitches and nothing else, so they know their stuff
  • If you need a bigger drop or rise, you won't be wasting money by getting a standard shank that you won't end up using. But...

Why wouldn't I buy this?

  • Steel-on-steel brackets can create a lot of noise, especially during turns
  • Requires a special thin-walled socket for installation, which is not included
  • You do have to buy the shank separately, so there is that extra step.
Steel-on-steel friction works to prevent and correct trailer sway in this unique weight distribution system. Sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your tow vehicle. Shank sold separately. 2-5/16" Hitch ball included. Lowest Prices for the best weight distribution hitch from Equal-i-zer. Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank (sold separately) and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4 Point Sway Control Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the equalizer weight distribution with a four point sway control. It has a 14,000 pound gross trailer weight, and 1,400 pound ton weight. Part number EQ37141ET. Please note, you will have to provide your own weight distribution shank. So you've decided you need a weight distribution system. The equalizer weight distribution system uses steel on steel friction to help prevent and correct trailer sway. The sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your tow vehicle.

Our spring bars flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a more controlled and even ride without bounce. The system includes the head assembly. It uses a traditional washer system to provide tilt in the head. The more tilt in the head, the more lift in the ton weight. Because it uses the four point sway control, there are no chains. The spring bars are easily installed with the included lift handle.

The whole thing is made out of a dipped steel construction, so its going to be durable and resist rust and corrosion. As with all weight distribution systems, it helps your tow vehicle get back to a stock height with the added weight of a trailer. Let's take a look at that now. I've gone ahead and removed the weight distribution and disconnected from the trailer. Let's go ahead and get a stock measurement of our tow vehicle. Here at the rear, we've got about 39 and a half inches to the underside of the wheel well.

At the front, I've got about 38 and a half inches. Now you want to be sure and record these measurements, because these are the measurements we want to try and get back to when we engage our weight distribution system. Now I've gone ahead and hooked my trailer back up to my tow vehicle without weight distribution. Now let's take a look and see what the tow vehicle looks like. Here in the back, I'm squatting about an inch, and here in the front, my vehicle is tilted upward about three-quarters of an inch. Weight distribution should correct that.

Let's hook it up. Now I've got my trailer hooked back up and my weight distribution engaged. Let's go ahead and take another measurement on our tow vehicle. Here in the back, we're back to stock height, and same with the front. Excellent. Not using a weight distribution system can cause issues with your traction, tire wear, and handling. Getting your vehicle back to stock with a weight distribution system can help prevent those problems. Now let's show you how it's installed. First thing to note about using a weight distribution system is you need to make sure your trailer or camper is fully loaded and ready to go. This ensures proper weight is being applied to your tow vehicle. The shank can be installed in either the rise or drop position. The head is adjustable along the shank. You just need to make sure that the top of the ball is level with the top of the coupler when your trailer is level. The kit includes eight washers to adjust the tilt of your head. You don't have to use all eight. You just need make sure to use enough to get your vehicle back close to stock. Our spring bars fit inside the weight distribution head and are lifted on the L-bracket with the included tool. We can then place in our snap L-pin to help keep the spring bar in place. This is where that steel on steel friction takes place, helping us with our sway control. Finally our link plates are installed on our trailer's A-frame with the L-brackets on the outside. You just want to make sure and avoid your battery box or your propane tanks. Those may have to be relocated. It needs to positioned between 27 and 32 inches from the center of your coupler. If you've used all eight washers for your head tilt, and your vehicle still isn't back to stock, you can adjust your L-brackets. And that's going to complete our look at the equalizer weight distribution with a four point sway control. It has a 14,000 pound gross trailer weight, and 1,400 pound ton weight. Part number EQ37141ET.

Have not had a chance to tow with the hitch yet but is very stout compared to old hitch and spring bars have a lot more weight to them which will hopefully keep the toyhauler in line. Hitch did come slightly scuffed up due to shipping but is understandable due to its weight and nothing some black spray paint wont fix. 734059

Easy install. First trip of 3.5 hours the hitch performed great. In my opinion the noise that some complain about wasn't bad at all. I did lubricate the friction points on the head. The bottom line is there is going to be some noise with these types of hitches. 721021

I am using this on my Jayco 38' trailer. I can do 90 mph with the thing on my truck if I had to. If it's not on I can do about 60 without swaying. The hitch works. I have the smaller one for another trailer too. 656782

I spend weeks researching different brands of hitches with weight distribution and sway control, for my 30 foot bumper pull RV, before buying one. I read all the reviews and called many manufactures, asking questions about their hitches. A lot of the company's that I called had personal answering the phone that didn't know anything about the product or how they worked (they only took orders) or they sounded like it was a bother to answer my questions. I finally purchased a hitch from ETrailer, it was the EQUAL-I-ZER Weight Distribution w/ 4 Point Sway Control- No Shank- 14,000 lbs TW #EQ37141ET I called the number on their web site and talked to Shawn B, I was impressed not only was she familiar with the company's' products (without putting me on hold and having to look them up) but advised me that I was at the end of the weight capacity for a 12,000 lb GTW, and suggested to go up to the 14,000 GTW and explained why. I have used this hitch for many trips and a lot of miles I waited to write this review so that I could really give it a good test. We live in Texas and have towed our 30 ft RV to Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, and Washington. The hitch has worked great, you don't have to disconnect the sway bars to back up, or when making sharp turns like other brands, and is easy to connect and disconnect (especially since I have an electric tongue jack). It does make strange sounds when you make sharp turns, that worried me at first, but I was expecting it because I had read reviews about this before buying the product. The set up was easy after watching some Videos and reading the instructions. One problem was finding someone to tighten the bolts to the requirements, after three trips to RV shop I found a place. I had informed Shawn on the phone before I ordered the hitch, that my truck was higher than most (came that way from the Factory, a 2001 Ram, 4 wheel drive, Cummings 5.9) and all the kits that I had looked at didn't have a shank that was long enough. Shawn informed me of a hitch (which I bought) that comes without a shank, and suggested buying an extra long 7 inch shank separate, (Item # C17123). Surprisingly buying the hitch without a shank, along with the extra long shank, ended up being a few dollars less, than buying a hitch with a shank. The best part was dealing with a person who knew the company's products, she even sent me an e-mail of the parts with the prices, before I ordered them, and after ordering them she followed up sending me the tracking numbers, and called the day that they were delivered, I really appreciated dealing with her on this order. Installation only took a couple hours (with no help). I would buy this product again, it works the way they said it would. 640771

I have used a lower weight rated Equal-i-zer hitch for two years and have been so pleased that I ordered another when I traded for a heavier travel trailer. I barely know my trailer is behind me and am confident pulling under any conditions. Kirstin D was great to work with, answered my questions and helped with an unusual shipping issue. I will continue to use etrailer. They are great. 569176

Dena was very helpful and knowledgeable on the selection of my weight distribution hitch. I had purchased a thin wall socket, But my buddy had one that I could have, so she made it easy to return the socket. The distribution hitch is perfect for my truck and trailer, it was easy to assemble and with the instruction pamphlet that came with it, it was easy to set up as well. 565746

Product is still great. The entire setup can be very loud (groans to wake up the neighbors) if you don't grease it regularly. Make sure you do. Other than that, definitely safer and a noticeable difference in sway and tow quality when using. 553064

Product is excellent and installation is a little challenging but the instructions are very helpful and easy to follow. Main difficulty is tightening the hitch ball. It takes a rather expensive thin wall socket to hold the nut properly. looking forward to taking the camper out soon to test the new hitch set up. 545228

This was bought to support an F250 with a 20' BigTex equipment trailer. Prior to buying the hitch, I had a bad experience with my old truck and a non-equalizing hitch, which prompted purchasing this with the new truck. This hitch is outstanding. Very heavy duty, and the load equalizing features are excellent. The sway bars can be difficult to install when less than fully loaded, but can be swapped with different weight bars. All in all a great piece of equipment. 360679

  • Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control to Replace Curt System
Equalizer and Curt weight distribution systems both fit the same shank design so the Equal-i-zer kit you are considering will fit on the Curt shank. So for a kit with 4-point sway control that would be rated the best for your trailer that has a dry tongue weight of 1,010 lbs you'd want the part # EQ37141ET which does not come with a shank as you'd be using the shank you already have. This has a tongue weight range of 1,000 to 1,400 lbs. Then for a thin walled socket to install the hitch...

The reducer sleeve does need to be a bit smaller than the interior dimension of the receiver or it could become stuck. Typically a bit of 'slop' between the shank and the receiver or in this case, the reducer and shank isn't much of a concern with a weight distribution system because the spring bars of the system are applying a good deal of upward leverage against the receiver. This is almost always enough leverage to prevent the shank from rattling around. Not in your case, however. Since...

It is possible that your brackets may be bent, in which case you would replace them with the Replacement Sway Control Bracket # EQ95-01-5600 .

  • Equal-i-Zer Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 11.4k Trailer and Lifted Truck
Based on the tongue weight you listed having and needing a larger drop shank the Equal-i-Zer Weight Distribution system you'd want is the part # EQ37141ET which has a tongue weight range of 1,000 lb to 1,400 lbs. For lifted trucks like yours a larger drop shank like the part # EQ90-02-4400 would be your best option as it allows you to do drops up to 9 inches which is about right for a truck like yours with a 2 inch lift.

  • Most Amount of Drop That Can Be Had with Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System for 2-1/2 Inch Hitch
The most amount of drop we offer in a weight distribution shank with 2-1/2" stinger is 8", the Curt Weight Distribution Shank part # C17132 which can be used with an Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System like part # EQ37141ET. If you need a higher capacity, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ90-00-1600 is available but not without the shank so you would just have to swap them out. Please note, rise/drop is measured from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver...

  • Can Equalizer Weight Distribution System be Used with Curt Weight Distribution Shank
The Curt weight distribution shank part # C17123 that you referenced is confirmed to fit with Equalizer weight distribution systems. It will work with the 14k Equalizer part # EQ37141ET you are interested in which can be used with a hitch reducer.

  • Upgrading from 1,200 lb Tongue Weight Fastway Weight Distribution to 1,400 lb Equalizer
Your best solution is going to be to go with the part # EQ37141ET. This is the # EQ37140ET but without the shank since you already have one. The head of your old system is not the same as the # EQ37140ET so new bars would not fit it. By the time you would piece together everything you would end up spending more than just ordering the part # EQ3714ET.

  • How to Determine Correct Shank for a Weight Distribution System and a 2014 Ram 2500
A properly rated weight distribution (WD) system will keep your trailer and your 2014 Ram 2500 level since it distributes the weight evenly across all of the axles in a towing setup. What you need to do is park your trailer and your Ram on a level surface and then measure from the ground to the bottom of your coupler (with the trailer level) and then from the ground to the top of the inside of your 2-1/2" receiver. Since you have a Ram 2500 you most likely need a shank with a drop. Simply...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer with 1,300-1,500 lb Tongue Weight
Equal-I-Zer is the clear winner. Many refer to the Equal-I-Zer brand as the nicest around whereas the feedback for Blue Ox weight distribution systems isn't as consistently positive. The highest rated system from them though is the part # EQ37141ET which is rated for up to 1,400 lbs of tongue weight. So if you are going to be over that you'd instead want to look at the Reese Strailtline kit part # RP66075 with the shank part # C17131 since your 2018 Ram would have a 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch....

  • How to Determine Correct Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System Based on Trailer Tongue Weight
The linked page will display all weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) systems for 2-1/2-inch hitches. None of these 2-1/2-inch systems comes from Equal-I-zer but we do have 2-1/2-inch shanks that can be purchased separately. Part # EQ90-02-4800 works for tongue weight (TW) up to 1400-lbs and provides up to 4-inches of drop or 8-inches of rise. Part # EQ90-02-4900 also is rated for up to 1400-lbs but allows height adjustment from 6-inches of drop to 10-inches of rise. The key to choosing...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for Keystone Sprinter 37 Foot Travel Trailer and 2015 Ram 2500
When choosing a weight distribution system, it is key to know your trailer's loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. To this tongue weight you will also need to add the weight of any cargo carrier behind the rear axle in the bed of your 2015 Ram 2500. Once you know the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, it will be easier to choose a properly rated weight distribution system. Typically, you will want your trailer's tongue weight near the mid-to-upper end of the weight...

  • Availability of Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Compatible with 2-1/2 Inch Receiver
For the 2-1/2 inch receiver you'd need to use an Equal-I-zer hitch along with their shank for a 2-1/2 inch receiver, part # EQ90-02-4900. The Equal-I-zer system you would choose will depend on the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, plus the weight of anything carried in the bed behind the rear truck axle. I'll link you to an FAQ article that outlines how to determine your trailer's tongue weight. For tongue weights up to but not exceeding 400 lbs, use part #...

  • Best Weight Distribution System for Grand Design Momentum 25G Trailer With 11,500 lb GVWR
For the Grand Design Momentum 25G the best Equal-i-zer weight distribution system is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # EQ37140ET. The reason for that is you want to choose your system based on total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your truck. The 1,150 lb hitch weight you mentioned is, according to Grand Design, based on average weight....

  • Selecting the Best Equalizer System for 28 Foot Trailer
Regarding the need for air shocks, you will get the most sway control from a weight distribution system and so I recommend starting with that and if you still have interest in improving things from there, we have a variety of air shock options we are happy to recommend. Your loaded tongue weight plus the weight added behind your truck's rear axle should drive the selection of the weight distribution system. If that number never exceeds 1,000 pounds then the Equa-li-zer # EQ37100ET is...
