Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese Strait-Line system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of the Strait-Line system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. These specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control.

Weight Distributing Hitch

Dual-Cam Sway Control

Reese's dual-cam sway-control system stops trailer sway before it begins. This is a significant improvement over traditional friction-style controls, which help to correct sway only after it has already begun. This specially designed system uses unique sliding devices called "cams" to suspend the spring bars of your weight-distribution system. One end of a cam bolts onto your trailer's frame, and the other end attaches to the lift bracket via the lift chain. The rounded, hooked ends of the spring bars then sit in these cams. The controlled placement of the spring bars keeps your system secure while still allowing enough movement for free, easy interaction between your trailer and your tow vehicle.

Dual-Cam Sway Control Turning

During basic, straight-line towing, the cams lock in place and hold the trailer steady by applying constant, consistent pressure to both sides. This keeps the trailer from swaying in crosswinds. When you go into a turn, the cams unlock and slide to allow a controlled, full-radius maneuver. If you swerve suddenly, the cams will give to accommodate the movement while still working to obtain a straight angle, thereby maintaining control of the trailer.

Video Transcript for Reese Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - RP66084 Review

Today, we're going to be reviewing part number RP66084. This is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with a sway control unit. It's a trunnion bar design. It's going to include the shank, as well the hitch pin and clips to secure it inside of your hitch. This is made from Reese. It's going to be designed to evenly distribute weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and the trailer for stability and control, which is going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer.

It's going to feature the automatically self-adjusting and self-centering sway control that's going to work in a variety of situations. So for strait-line movement, the cams are actually going to lock into place and hold the trailer steady despite crosswinds. When you go around 00:00:43 corners, the cams will automatically unlock and slide to allow for full-radius turns. When you're in kind of situations where you can't help but have sudden swerving, the cams are going to seek a straight-line angle to help stabilize your trailer. The sway control system is going to be this portion here. It's just going to simply bolt on to the A-frame trailer tongue.

It's going to attach to the lift brackets using the chains so you can see how this one is set up. For the sway control, you're going to get . The bracket here, this is going to mount to the trailer frame. All the hardware that you need is included, so you don't have to worry about purchasing anything separately when it comes to the hardware. They're going to come with these brackets as well, which your U-bolts go through to hold the chain.

The chain is going to connect to the lift bracket. You don't have to worry about any like large U-bolts or platforms that are going to interfere with frame-mounted items such as gas tanks, toolboxes or generators. The trunnion bars are hot rolled, and they have a tapered design for superior strength and flexibility. The bars will flex appropriately for uneven terrain and provide a nice control and even ride. The sway-control cams are going to provide the attachment points. For the end of the spring bars has a curve portion there, it just fits right over the sway control system. The head assembly and the adjustable shank are included.

Here on the head assembly, it's going to feature a forged, raised ball platform that's going to eliminate the need for a raised hitch ball. The tension for the spring bars can be adjusted. All you got to do is switch the links in the lift chains to fine tune. That's going to be dependent upon your particular towing application. Well, let's take a closer look at the head assembly. I'm going to flip this around. I want to show real quick just the washer design. The washers have a serrated edge on them. Each washer does. The head assembly has a serrated design. What that allows is for you to achieve the desired tilt. That serrated-washer design is going to allow the head to tilt as needed, so it's going to eliminate the need to having to pile on washer after washer to get the tilt that you need. It's a really great system to have in place. Once you have the desired tilt, all you got to do is tighten up the hardware, and the washers are actually going to interlock with the grooves on the head assembly. It's going to provide a nice tight fit. It's going to hold it in place. That way, you can get the tilt and the angle that you need for your particular application. This system is going to include the sway control cams, the head assembly, the adjustable shank. You're going to get the lift brackets, spring bars, the lift chains, all the pins and clips that you need. You're going to get the necessary hardware for both the weight distribution system and the sway control system. You're also going to get a shim, which is this portion here. You're going to get a reducer sleeve. You're going to get the snap-up handle. The snap-up handle, it's for the lift bracket. When you're connecting the chains, the lift brackets are going to be in a down position. It's going to allow you to get the chain on there. Because of the tension that comes from connecting the chains, sometimes it's really hard to get that bracket back up into place just by hand, so they actually include a snap-up handle. This is going to allow you to gain some leverage. You're going to go over that portion there. You're going to bring the bracket up into position. Then, you can just secure it in place using the included pins that go through. It's going to keep everything tight and secure. The hitch ball is really the only thing on the system that's going to be sold separately. It does require an 1 1/4-inch shank diameter. You can use a hitch ball with a 1-inch shank diameter, but then you will have to use the reducer sleeve, so keep that in mind. That fits right in there. It reduces that hole from 1 1/14 inches down to a 1-inch diameter. It's going to offer a tongue weight of 600 to 1,200 lbs with a gross towing weight of 12,000 lbs. The shank is designed to fit a 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver that's rated for use with a weight-distribution system. When it comes to positioning the lift brackets, you want to position this about 30 inches back from the hitch ball. You do that measurement on each side of your trailer frame, and then it has a set ball 00:05:01 in the back. You can just tighten that down. It's going to apply pressure to the inside portion of the frame, holding the brackets in place. Each bracket is going to take up approximately 5 1/2 inches of space along the trailer frame. Please keep in mind that it will not fit trailer frames wider than 2 1/2 inches. Now, when it comes to the shank, the shank length that we have from the center of the hitch pin holes to the center of where the hitch ball mounts, that's going to give some measurement of 14 inches. The shank is a 6-hole design. Those holes are going to be separated, center on center, by an 1 1/4 inches. It's going to offer a maximum rise of 6 1/2 inches with a maximum drop of 1 1/4 inches. Everything is coated in a really nice black powder coat finish. It's an all-steel construction. It's going to really stand up well to the elements and rust and corrosion. It's going to provide many years of use. The shim is designed to go in between the shank and the inside face of the bracket here on the head weight or on the head of the weight distribution system. That's designed to go in there. Take out any slack or gap that you may have. It's got the 2 large holes, that way you can run the balls through there to hold it in place. If you need multiple of this, you can refer to your instructions and it's got some contact info in there or we can reach out to you and get one for each 00:06:20 side if you need to. Now, when it comes to selecting a weight distribution system, it's really important that you select one with a proper weight rating. To determine that, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight, and then you want to add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Combine those 2 measurements, and that's going to make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. That's going to do it for our review of part number RP66084. This is the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with a Sway Control. .

This is a great product, so glad I installed on our 28' travel trailer! When hooked up to the truck, the truck and trailer feel like one unit. Plan on adding the side sway mechanism next summer. 449187

I had experience with towing travel trailers before, but it had been a while. When we decided to buy a new trailer, the hitch setup the trailer dealer proposed just didn't seem right for the job. Doing some research on my own, I came across the etrailer.com site. From the information that was available on the site I was able to focus in on what I thought would be the best fit for my F-150 towing an 8,000 lb + trailer. When I called with questions, I was fortunate that I talked to Wayne--one of etrailer's product specialists. This was like talking to a trusted brother. We discussed a few different brands and the pros and cons; but in the end decided the Strait-Line RP66084 would be the best fit. After that conversation, I did some more research on my own and--besides discovering that Wayne's advice was fantastic and spot on--found that the Strait Line system proposed was top ranked. The features I was looking for: (1) Leveling (weight distribution) capabilities (2) Sway control (3) Safety (4) Tracking (holding the trailer steady behind you when taking curves (5) Ability to back up without having to get out of truck and manually release a brake bar and (6) simple enough to install for a shade tree mechanic. The Strait-Line fit the bill and I'm very appreciative that etrailer.com has experts--rather than sales-focused pushy people--to help you make the right decision. I've pulled my trailer with ease and the Strait-Line has lived up to every expectation. And etrailer.com's price was great and the shipping had it delivered sooner than expected. It's rare when you can say you are COMPLETELY SATISFIED with a product, service, quality, and price--but I can that about my purchase of the Strait-Line RP66084 from etrailer.com 199001

I purchase a used trailer recently and have made several purchases from etrailer to include a Straight-Line Weight Distribution Hitch (RP 66084), 2 5/16 Ball (19286), RV Generator Plug (CAM 55333), Aqua Hose, sealing trim for roof and side seams etc... All of the products have arrived on time and are of high quality. The trunnion bar holes on the RP 66084 were missed drilled so I called etrailer(Laser) and he shipped me out replacement bars which arrived sooner than expected along with a return label for the miss-drilled bars. Products are quality, service is quality and inventory is exceptional. It is a pleasure doing business with them. 403322

I bought the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW for my 18 foot trailer used to haul just under 10,000lbs of Tractor and implements on winding Tennessee roads with my 2014 Double Cab 4.6 liter Full Bed Tundra. The product works great; I almost don't realize the trailer is there. Everything is level with no drop at the front and 1/2 to1 inch drop at the back depending on what's loaded. There is normally about a 3-4 inch drop in the back. Be aware that the box will be delivered at just over 90 pounds. The installation is not technically difficult, but you will need more tools than the instructions indicate to get everything together. The high torque bolts and as well as the 450 ft/lbs ball torque require some specific large wrenches and sockets. If you go through the instructions and pieces for the actual size of the bolts required, it will save you some running around to find tools. Invest in a step drill bit and it will save some hunting. With everything in place and ready to go, this was a solid 8 hour install with a lot of low to the ground squatting and bending which you will feel the next day. If I were older (46 now), I would have a professional install this. If you do, they will need a fully loaded trailer to finish which you will also need to finish the install. There is one piece in the instructions for installing the optional 1/2" x 1.00" SELF TAPPING SCREW into the snap up braket First, this is not really optional, but the instructions indicate to drill a 9/16" hole for this 1/2" screw which is incorrect and will cause you to not be able to tighten the screw down. The whole should be 1/2". Don't be tempted to put these in before the very last step after everything is hooked up or you will be very unhappy. The snapup brakets get moved around several times between the WD and Sway Control sections. The only negative (if it is negative) is that for my trailer height of 16", the trunnions are only 5 1/2" of the ground which can make speed bumps and the like an interesting experience as the do contact the road as the trailer wheels go over those bumps. If you are converting from a normal ball hitch off the back of the truck to this for the first time, your break away wire and safety chains will now be too short to connect to the truck (in all likely hood). You will likely need to either add to or replace those as well. All in all, the system works great, is technically easy to install with all the correct tools and sufficient time. 193724

This thing works well, as advertised. It did boost the rear end of the truck up immediately and seemed to have a positive affect on sway. I was able to back up with it as advertised. The issue I had with it and what prevents me from scoring higher is despite the fact that I followed the instructions to the letter, the lower brackets are installed by drilling out holes and hammering in "blind" or knurled nuts. I was leery of their longevity and for good reason. After 1500 miles they wallowed out the holes and made one of the lower brackets loose. My solution was simply to weld the lower brackets directly to the frame and its vastly superior to the install methods they advise and works great. However since not everyone is comfortable/set up to MIG welding these on and will rely on the foolish blind nuts I can only give it 3 stars. 447030

I've been very happy with the system that we got, we put almost 7,000 miles on it in 2017 and it rode great. I added a secondary friction sway control to compliment the control provided by the leveling bars and cam assembly and over those miles it never felt uneasy. A couple of times we were in some pretty good cross winds and I would notice enough to put two hands on the wheel but the rest of the time it was almost easy to forget we were towing a 28' trailer. I'd definitely recommend spending a little time at your local Cat Scales to find out your specific truck / trailer and tongue weights, but this hitch and distribution assembly gave us the ability to tune the tongue weight into right where we wanted by the selection of the right link. The peace of mind the overall control that it provided going down the road is well worth it. 475620

OK, I waited to write this review until I had an opportunity to really use this product. We just completed a 950 mile camping trip around Colorado. We went up and over mountains, around curves, and traveled in the interstate. All I can say is, WOW! I wish I had purchased this years ago. We pull a 7000# travel trailer with a new F150 EcoBoost. Before installing this we were pushed around in windy canyons, semis and dealt with sway descending the mountains. This product is the real deal. I can safely travel on the interstate at speeds up to 75 MPH thanks to this product. 50034

I have a 33 TT towing with an ecoboost. I think the hitch I have is too week. My TT never gets loaded over 6,500 yet I still get a bad front end drift? I think its the WD I currently have. Does this hitch really solve that problem? My TV is a super crew lariat off road package with c rated tires

Weight distribution can help handling and steering when properly set up. This system also has an integrated sway control system also improves handling and stability. With your travel trailer loaded and ready to go, having about 650 pound of tongue weight, this system is rated appropriately for your needs. If you are experiencing too much front end sway you may need to make some adjustments to place more of the load on the front axle These adjustments can be made at the angle of the head. Please see your specific installation instructions for more details.

OMG, the Reese straight-line weight distribution hitch is fantastic. No complaints whatsoever. Pull a 23 foot Rockwood trailer of 3,200 pounds with my 2016 Ram 1500. Pass the semi-trailers with confidence and absolutely no white knuckles. Great product. 710961

etrailer did a fabulous job coordinating many products for my application. I am towing a sports car hauler/ camper combination trailer with a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8. It all works extremely well. Backing up goes very well too, even if I do have limited view, I can always see one side at a minimum. Thanks for the knowledgeable staff! I had a lot of questions and wasn't entirely sure which setup would suit my situation best, and they guided me to the setup best for me. 699266

The sway control worked OK when the hitch was new but after 8000 miles and as the hitch wore in, my 32 foot trailer became harder to control as the trailer mounted sway brackets developed flat spots on the rollers - the grinding noise which got worse as the hitch heated up from the vehicles exhaust has become unbearable. I have elected to order a different hitch / sway system which unfortunately is not sold by etrailer. 692526

Comments

I have reached out to my contacts at Reese regarding your concerns about your Straight-Line weight distribution system and get the following information that I wanted to pass along you you: It is normal for the dual cam portion of the hitch to develop wear or flat spots on the rollers. The spring bars constantly move fore and aft on the dual cam and they will wear. We maintain this metal on metal friction to minimize sway. Yes the metal on metal contact will create noise when making turns and more noticeable when making turns at slow speeds. This is all part of how the system works with all the parts and pieces.

The product was not only a perfect physical fit for my truck and travel trailer, but it it works so well I no longer drive with white knuckles. The etrailer support team worked with me to figure out my real needs versus my preciously rookie "wants" which were somewhat uninformed wants. My Trunion Bar WD Hitch with Optional sway control makes ZERO noise in use or backing up, nor does it impart any felt knuckling. 691354

Product works great for my setup, before I had a standard weight distribution system and my 37’ camper was all over but with this trunnion setup greatly reduces my white knuckle driving I experienced before. After a discussion with Anthony I decided to go with the Reese hitch. So glad I did. 17 trips last year and I still think it is the best setup. I was debating the Equalizer. I personally have seen issues. Truck and camper must be level to hook up and I have seen the pins bend. Plus they are noisy. This hitch is easy to use and I have zero sag with my truck. 472548

I had a reese hitch about 30 years ago, the hitch saved me from going into clear creek when my trailer was fishtailing it pulled it back straight behind my tow vehicle. I went to a 5th wheel for several years then wanted to downsize to smaller trailer. Bought a pull behind and wanted a weight dist and sway control for it. Bought the rp66084, you kept me informed about the shipping and when i would get it, came in by ups one box was crushed open but was no missing parts. Have not had it on the road yet but sure everything will be ok. 420292

Good hitch. Worked well. Only issue was with install. The lock washers for the bolts to attach the sway control were either not quality or flat washers should have been provided to place behind the locking washer. I started torquing down the bolt and the washer just bent open with the bolt, coming out from under the bolt. 406214

Great product and well worth the money! Within 20-minutes of hooking up to my brand new 31 foot travel trailer I was in 40-mph crosswinds with gust over 50. I'm confident that I would of been filing an insurance claim if I hadn't purchased such a great product. Saved my bacon! 383440

Excellent product. It's an easy DYI installation. It only took about an hour to install to spec. Not much to say about the weight distro, other than it's nice to have my truck riding next to normal. I was most impressed with the built-in anti-sway in high winds while crossing a large body of water. Never once did I feel the vehicle was going to go off the bridge, or any whipping of the trailer. The two felt like one unit. Highly recommend this setup 381439

I am very happy with my Reese hitch. It was a good value, and the difference in handling between this hitch and my previous one is unbelievable. The overall control and anti-sway capability is an amazing improvement. I would never have believed that a different hitch could make so much difference. Great product at a fair price, and eTrailer is an outstanding place to purchase. Their service, support, and expertise is second-to-none! 374297

I have had the use of this Item for about a year and i give 5 stars . I have pucharsed several item from this company it the past and as usual etrailer is spot on. Installed this hitch in no time. instructions are concise a clear and went on a test drive with truck and trailer. 65 MPH their is very little sway. Just a small amount when an 18 wheeler goes by but that is no problem. Buy it. You will sure like 358134

Great product that we use monthly; my teen age children got comfortable using it. 350243

The advantage Ive found purchasing from etrailer is that I can buy only the parts I need for multiple trailers that I own. My two primary trucks have the hitches and sway bars in them. By buying the other parts from etrailer all six of my trailers can be connected without effort of moving clamps at any time.

Never having used sway control before, but having trailered hundreds of thousands of miles, I was not at all sure how it would be. With this setup on our 33', 7500# camper, I can run any speed I need to, and the trailer stays put. Any wind conditions too. Great product. Well engineered and well built. I really like it and am super happy with it's performance. 343160

Just an excellent product. You need your thinking cap on when you install it the first time, and it takes about 2-3 hours and minimal to medium mechanical skills. It makes pulling my 14', 5500 lb trailer with a half ton Chevy truck a breeze. I can't feel its even behind me. 281470

The hitch was delivered in good condition except for a few paint chips. Considering the weight of the hitch and parts, I expected as such. If you order the sway control arms as I did you must read all the directions before starting. The sway control arms will change where the brackets need to be located on the trailer tongue. All the parts when together great and I can't wait to see how the hitch performs on my 29 foot Salem travel trailer. 253849

Got the order on time and installed pretty easy just a slow process. Only thing I don't like about this products is that its noisy when turning tried putting oil on like was recommended and that helped but it's still noisy. 248220

  • Hitch Extension Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-350 to Tow 9,300 lb Trailer
  • We have a solution for you but since your trailer is as heavy as it is, the part # RP45018 would not have the capacity needed. You'd need a Torklift Hitch part # TLF1008-30 installed on your truck instead so that you could use the extension part # TLE1548 but then you'd also have to use a weight distribution system like the part # RP66084 since this extension only has a high enough capacity when used with WD for your trailer. I realize this is probably a bit shocking with the cost...

  • There are three reasons as to why a hitch ball with a built-in scale like the Weigh Safe 2-5/16" Hitch Ball w/ Built-In Scale part # WSUN-3 will not work in the head of a weight distribution system like the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control part # RP66084. 1. • How to Determine if Weight Distribution System is Needed
  • I love the fact you are taking the potential need for a weight distribution system seriously and the first thing I'd like to note is that a weight distribution system is strongly recommended if your trailer weight (GTW) is more than 50% of your vehicle's weight (GVWR). In regards to tongue weight, you do not need to find the weight of the two different axles, as you can see by the cut out I added from the help article I linked for you on how to determine tongue weight. Along with the...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation Towing Jayco White Hawk 29BH
  • Both round and trunnion bar systems are equally as effective, but a round bar system won't have as much ground clearance under it as a trunnion bar system. This is because the bars attach to the weight distribution head from underneath. If your tow vehicle is a full sized pick-up or SUV, a round bar system would work just fine. If you're towing with a small crossover or a minivan (anything with little ground clearance) you'd definitely want to go with a trunnion bar system. Typically the...

  • Will One Side of Reese Strait-Line be More Difficult to Connect
  • Yes, it is normal for one side of a Strait-Line system to be more difficult to put on than the other; attaching one side is going to create tension on the other side, so that would not be why your trailer is swaying a lot. The reason for that is almost certainly that you do not have the properly rated system. In order to choose the best weight distribution system you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go...

  • What is the Best Solution to Stop Trailer Sway While Towing with a New Ford F-150
  • The best solution for you to help prevent and eliminate trailer sway while towing at speed is to use a weight distribution system even if the truck does not sag while coupled to the trailer. The reason for this is that most weight distribution systems have integrated sway control built-in. Also, the truck may still be sagging slightly even if it is not noticeable and that could be the reason one truck pulls a trailer better than the other. The two main reasons one truck would pull a trailer...

The complexity of the systems to disconnect for storage will be similar, so I would just mark the trailer for easy reinstallation.
