Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Video Transcript for Reese Weight Distribution - WD Only - RP66022 Review

So today, we'll be reviewing part number RP66022, this is the Reese weight distribution system, without a shank. It is trunnion bar design. It's going to offer a gross towing weight 12,000 pounds with a maximum tongue 00:00:13 of 1200 pounds. This system is designed to evenly distribute the weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and your trailer for stability and control. It's going to create a more level ride for the both the tow vehicle and the trailer. The trunnion bar spring bars are hot rolled and taped for superior strength and flexibility. The bars will flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a controlled, even ride.

It's also going to feature the curved ends that are designed for use with dual cams sway control systems, part number RP26002 and that is sold separately. We flip it around here, I just want to show you the head of the system. So right here, the desired tilt that sometimes we need can easily be achieved with a serrated washer design, so there's going to be no more piling on washers after washers. You see here that we have the serrated teeth on the washer itself, as well as the serrated teeth along the actual head and that's going to allow this piece to slide back and forth. The serrated portions are going to grab into that and then you can just tighten it using the bolt that comes with the lock washer and the nut. So you can get that in place, that's going to be a great design. Right here, this is the hole for the hitch ball.

That is going to measure an inch and a quarter in diameter. It's also going to come with a sleeve or an adapter that can fit in there so that way you can use a hitch ball with a one inch shank as well, so that's what that is. It's got the forged raised ball platform on the head that's going to eliminate the need for a raised hitch ball. So the systems going to include the head assembly, the lift brackets, the churning spring bars, the lift chains and all necessary hardware. The adjustable shank and trailer hitch ball, that's going to be sold separately. You can find that right here at www.etrailer.com. You can also adjust the spring bar tension just by switching the links in the lift chains to fine-tune.

Everything that you need to know is going to be included with the instructions that come with the system. So you can see here that these are easily adjustable. These can easily be installed and removed. It's actually going to feature a grove here on the head and then the bottom portion actually sits in the collar down here, so you can just slide that in here and then it just seats into position, a really easy to use, really easy to get in place. This is going to offer a tongue weight of 600-1200 pounds with a gross towing weight of 12,000 pounds. It is designed to fit a two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver that's going to be rated for use with weight distribution system. So you want to make sure that whatever adjustable system that you choose, that it is designed for a weight distribution system. When it comes to the lift bracket positioning, you want to mount about 30 inches back from the hitch ball.

It's going to require approximately five and a half inches of space along the trailer frame. Optional mounts can be in place. We do offer some of those and they're going to be sold separately at www.etrailer.com and those optional mounts are just designed to take up less space along the frame of your trailer if you don't have as much space available. Keep in mind that this will not fit trailer frames wider than two and a half inches. So right here, you're going to have the bolts needed to secure this portion here to the trailer frame that's got the mount hole here in the back. You're also going to have the tension bar. So once you get this setup, and you get your chains connected, the chain is going to apply a lot of tension and so you're going to need help getting this portion up into place as it's in place right now in the position shown. So when it's down, all you have to do is remove that clip. So when it's down or when you're installing it, it's actually going to be in this position here. This bar is going to help you just lift this portion up and get it into place. So that's just an easy assist bar thats going to help with the tension. Once it's in place, you can just install the nice little safety pin here. Goes in there and it's just going to ensure that everything is going to be held in place correctly. So to determine the proper weight rating for a weigh distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight and then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and then combine those two measurements and that's going to make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. That's going to do it for today's review of part number RP66022. This is the Reese weight distribution system. .

This is my second weight distribution hitch, which was made by Reese and the first one was used from 1993 to 2017. Although I bought the trunnion bar hitch, as it was the same type as my first hitch, there are changes in the design of the hitch, which I believe will be improvements over the older design. I'm ready to get on the road with this Reese hitch pulling my travel trailer. 422720

Over satisfied with the Reese Straight Line hitch!! It does everything it says it will with no question!! I had a regular Reese equalizer and got a lot of sway with my 34 foot Springdale behind my 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, and the Reese Straight Line eliminated ALL of it!! The installation process is a little tricky but with the instructions and the video etrailer has on YouTube, it worked out just great!! Completely satisfied with the help and knowledge from etrailer!!!! 269095

Truck ended up in the shop. Blown engine. We cancelled the order for the time being. Sales rep was very helpful both in helping to order the hitch and canceling the order as a result of the engine problem. I will seriously consider reordering a hitch from etrailer. The rep was very helpful on helping us purchase the right hitch. It was delivered at the approximate time as promised. Unfornately we had to return it as the truck is in the garage. 264722

This was my first encounter with etrailer and I have to say it was hands down the best service I have ever received! Really.. And no I don't work for etrailer!!!!!! We use to live in a country where good service was just a way of life. Today, lets face it, service is terrible! But not etrailer.. I placed an order for this product online and selected the normal shipping method by ground. I immediately got the normal email "thank you for your order". But then I got another email from an actual person, George.. George let me know the product was in their distribution facility and will ship in 24-48 hours.. To my surprise, the order shipped the same day and I received another email from a Frank stating they took the liberty of upgrading my shipping to 3 to 5 days express shipping instead of the normal 5 to 7 days at no charge to me! So my response to this was "wow great service thank you!".. Again to my surprise I received an email from a Nikki who thanked me for my positive feedback. On a side note can you believe, they actually put their direct phone with extension along their email address on the bottom of their emails so you can actually get in touch with them? I didn't think this type of stellar service existed anymore.. Kudos to etrailer.. Ok, I think I almost forgot to write about the actual product.. The product was made very well, hooked up with no issues, and when I had questions on adjustments, you guessed it, i called and emailed folks at etrailer and they actually helped me!!!! They could have sent me a box of cracker jacks and I would have given then an excellent review! :) Keep up the great work etrailer... I won't shop anywhere else for my trailer needs.. 122287

  • Using Weight Distribution System on Big Tex Trailer Tongue

With a Tongue weight of 700 to 750 pounds, a system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight would be a good fit. Having a system rated a little higher will have a stiffer ride when you tow, but it is much better than to have a system that is rated too low. With a...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Towing a 4,500 Pound Trailer
  • First, a trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight when loaded and ready to tow. For a trailer that weighs 4,500 pounds, you are looking at a tongue weight between 450 and 675 pounds. You can use a tongue weight scale, # 5780, to get the tongue weight of the trailer. Once you know the tongue weight, you also have to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the Tacoma. If you had 100 pounds of gear in the truck bed behind the rear...

  • Truck Sags from Trailer Tongue Weight with Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch
  • It sounds to me that you may simply have a weight distribution system that is not rated high enough for the tongue weight (TW) of the loaded trailer. Since your truck is a recent model year I would not expect there to be an issue with its suspension. It is simple enough to measure the fully-loaded trailer tongue weight using scale # 5780. Also keep in mind that if there is any cargo in the bed that sits behind the rear axle, such as a generator or big loaded cooler, this cargo weight...

  • Weight Distribution for a V-Nose Trailer with 850 Pounds Tongue Weight
  • You can use weight distribution on a V-nose trailer but you may need alternate hangers if there isn't enough space available on the frame for the regular hangers. But first, when determining tongue weight, also factor in the weight of anything loaded in the towing vehicle behind the rear axle. You will want a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the tongue weight plus the weight of cargo behind the rear axle. A Reese system, # RP61009, has a wide range of 600...

  • How to Flat Tow a 2014 Volkswagen Golf TDI Behind a Motor Home
  • To determine if your specific model 2014 Volkswagen Gold turbo diesel can be flat towed you will need to consult the owners manual. If it can there are at least 5 items that you will need. First you will need base plates for the Golf. Roadmaster base plates # 521235-1 will fit 2.0 liter TDI models. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. Next you will need a compatible tow bar. I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520. This is the most popular compatible tow bar...

  • Ball Mount and Weight Distribution Recommendation for 8500 lb Travel Trailer
  • The hollow shank ball mounts typically carry a lower weight rating than what you are looking for. You do not mention what kind of rise/drop you are needing, but for a 12,000 pound rating I would recommend a forged ball mount. Part # 40330 offers a 1 inch rise or 2 inch drop, part # 40331 has a 3 inch rise or 4 inch drop, and part # 40332 features a 5 inch rise or a 6 inch drop. Anytime the loaded trailer weighs 50 percent or more than the weight of the vehicle, weight distribution is...

  • Torklift Weight Distribution System for a Torklift Hitch
  • The holes of the # TLM9000 will fit a Reese weight distribution system head. Some of their shanks are made to fit their larger Everest system but this one will fit industry standard heads like a Reese # RP66022. If you have a Torklift hitch on your truck you would want to get a Torklift weight distribution system like the # TLWD1000. Check out the review video I attached to the right for more information.

  • Will Using a Weight Distribution System Increase Towing Capacity of Vehicle
  • An equalizing hitch or weight distribution can sometimes increase the capacity of the receiver hitch, but the vehicle manufacturers stated towing capacity or rating will always be the final determination of how much the vehicle can tow. Any towing system will only be as strong as its lowest rated component. I would urge you to abide by the stated towing capacity of your truck. Failure to do so can cause the hitch to fail or damage drive train components on the vehicle.
