Pro Series Weight Distribution diagram

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Unique Features of Pro Series Round-Bar Weight Distribution

Pro Series Weight Distribution adjustable head from top and side

To adjust your weight-distribution head assembly to the correct angle, insert the included rivet and up to 8 washers into a 1/2-inch hole in the "U" on your head assembly. Use the smallest number of washers necessary to achieve the correct downward angle for the spring bars. Each washer lowers the chain ends of your spring bars by approximately 1-1/2 inches. Once the correct angle is reached, use the included bolts, serrated washers and nuts to lock the unit into place.

Pro Series Weight Distribution round spring bar locking devices

The round spring bars of this system slide up into the weight-distribution head and are secured with built-in, spring-bar locking devices for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and forged steel construction, these bars flex to ensure a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer.

Friction Sway Control

Pro Series Weight Distribution friction sway control installation on trailer framePro Series Weight Distribution friction sway control installation on hitch head

The integrated friction-style sway control of the Pro Series system reduces trailer sway caused by winds, winding roads and sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit touch one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement. To install, simply bolt the sway-control ball plate to the A-frame of your trailer and attach the other end to the included ball, which mounts on the head of your weight-distribution hitch - drilling required. The ball plate mounts to the side of the trailer frame so it will not interfere with gas tanks, toolboxes or generators.

Video Transcript for Pro Series Weight Distribution System Installation

Today in this trailer, we are going to install part number PS49903. First step is to go ahead and get our truck and trailer in straight line, then well disconnect the truck and trailer and then well go ahead and level off the trailer then we can start work on the weight distribution and our measurement from the top cup down to the ground is going to be 20 inches. Well write that down and then we will go on to the truck. At the top of the fender well at the rear axle is going to be 37-1/4 inches and at the front axle to the top of the wheel well will be 34-7/8. Ideally, we want the front to stay the same and maybe have the back settle about an inch at the most. Now this obviously will vary from truck to truck and from truck and trailer combinations.

To start off our install well go ahead and install the shank into the hitch. Well install pin and clip to secure it. First, well mark off our height that we need to set the ball at and account for vehicle squat we are going actually raise the ball up one inch. Then well install the head assembly with the ball already installed onto the shank and well match it up to that mark as close as possible. On the inside of the head, theres a pin that we had to add some washers to that will provide tilt for the head assembly to go back towards the trailer and apply pressure on the spring bars.

Now this will vary from trailer to trailer and vehicle to vehicle. We are going to start off with four washers. Well go ahead, and bolt the head assembly to the shank and then loosely install all the hardware. Now well tighten up the bolt at the bottom that way to help bring the top of the head of the assembly up snag against the shank and provide the proper angle we need. Then we go ahead and tighten down the bolts that go through the shank and the head assembly.

Well tightened them and torque those down as specified in the instructions. With our trailer back on the hitch, ball well go ahead and raise the truck and trailer back up and then we can go ahead, and install one of the spring bars and then line up the chain bracket. To install the spring bar we will go ahead and slide it up from the bottom, make sure it clicks in the place and then well take our chain thats already been installed in the spring bar and pull it up vertical in a straight line and then align our bracket with it. Once we have the bracket and alignment in chain well go ahead and tighten down the snap up screw on the backside. Well do that on both sides.

At this point, well go ahead and attach our spring bars to the snap up brackets we just installed. Well go ahead and lower the yoke on the snap up bracket until its parallel with the ground and slipped the closest link over to the hook and when we do this we want to keep at least five links between the hook and the u-bolt and then well go ahead and check to see how the spring bars are properly aligned with the frame. Now you want your spring bars pointing slightly down or level with the frame. As you pointing up again well have to take the head assembly apart, add some more washers and tilt the head assembly down then reassemble. Once we have, the chains hooked up well go ahead, and lower our truck and trailer and check our alignment with the spring bars with the frame. With every thing hooked up, well go ahead and check measurements again like we did at the beginning. It looks like the front axle stayed about the same and the back axle settled about one inch which is about right. So that all looks good now well go ahead and move on to the installation of the anti-sway control. Now we took the sway ball and mounted it up to the side of the frame temporarily. So, well go ahead, and measure up and make sure they stay at the correct spot. We are going to measure from the center of the hitch ball to the center of our sway control ball it does come out to the right measurements, 24 inches. However, two of the boltholes going towards the back trailer do not line up properly. Once you are going to reinstall the old sway ball in its place. However, when you install the old anti-sway ball we will sue new hardware. Well take the self-tapping bolts and the star washers, attach them and then reinstall them into the trailer frame. All right now go ahead and add on the anti-sway bar. Well apply a little of grease to the mounting points. Well go ahead, and add the sway bar on top and install the safety pins and after that all we need to do is go ahead and take it to the test drive, make sure everything works properly and if the sway control doesnt get into a bind on sharp turns. That will finish it for our install part number PS49903.

your set up looks a lot like mine. I have a 2004 GMC Yukon. I purchased a 27.5 foot trailer, is this what you are pulling as well? How does it do? How much does your trailer weigh?ThanksShane

Hauled a 10,000 pound 24' trailer with a 2015 Tundra CrewMax 4wd TRD from Virginia Beach, VA to Oak Harbor, WA in January. Made it without a single issue using this weight distributing hitch. No swing, 70 mph across Wyoming, across mountains and snow, blistering wind and rain. Couldn't have asked for an easier trip. Just make sure your trailer is loaded properly and distribute the weight to have the correct weight at the hitch. I had about 20%. 323036

Towed a sailboat (6000 lbs) on trailer (~1500 lbs) from Missouri to Colorado with a 1/2 Ton chevy pickup. Did great, no sway, no issues whatsoever. Installation was straightforward and done in the boat yard with limited tools without any trouble at all. We didn't put the boat on the trailer and had no opportunity to adjust the weight distribution. No problems at all. I definitely can recommend this hitch setup. 485181

The product is excellent as is the price point. The RV dealership wanted $475 for a model with a step down in features (no sway control). No complaints. I had it professionally installed and the installers had nothing negative to say about it and no trouble installing it at all. The product is well-designed and simple to use. I especially like the grease fittings and sealed pivot assembly for the weight distribution arms. I don't want to have to disassemble the entire hitch to get some "special grease" (sold separately, of course!) into hard to reach areas like some of the (popular brand) weight distribution hitches. And the 33" spring-arm length is perfect to hit the spot between the propane tanks and batteries on my TT's tongue. It's like they thought about who was going to use it when they designed it. I tow my 7,100lb travel trailer with a 2003 Chevy 2500HD using this hitch system, and it tows beautifully. I can handle turns at reasonable speeds without excessive lean, and the truck and trailer behave as a sturdy, manageable unit instead of two large, heavy items with a flimsy, uncontrolled pivot point between them. The product is important, but the best part was the transaction and experience with eTrailer. I've purchased from eTrailer a few times before and always had a good experience, but I could not remember my password. I called the toll-free number instead and spoke with Ashley, who never threw any roadblocks and was very helpful throughout the process, which was as quick and easy as I could hope for. She found my account, confirmed addresses and made necessary changes, and helped me to decide on the right product for the job. She was well-informed about eTrailer's offerings and how they are to be used. I got the free shipping, but of course I ordered at the last minute, so didn't really leave enough time to receive the product before I needed to use it. Without making any promises, Ashley seems to have made it her business to get the hitch shipped a day faster than usual, getting it to me just in time. Bravo, Ashley. I will continue doing business with eTrailer any time I need towing equipment of any kind. 364586

I bought this product about a year ago and am using it on a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pulling a 33 ft. Puma Travel Trailer. The max loaded weight of the camper is 8,000 lbs, which puts me right at the max gvw of the truck and trailer combined. I have pulled the camper with and without the weight distribution system attached and with and without the sway bar attached. They both make a huge difference in the handling and ride when towing the camper and I am super glad I bought it. It was recommended by the camper dealer, and I read all of the reviews, etc. I didn't understand the physics behind it all, but it really works great. Used an on-line video to help me get it installed (which was not a major ordeal, just have the right tools, etc. and be prepared to adjust it if necessary). I will eventually upgrade to a 2500 just for more towing power, but will probably put this system on that truck as well. Great product, well worth the cost. 384784

After just the first few miles of using this hitch pulling my 30' camper with my suburban absolutely fell in love with it. I highly recommend this product been a great addition and etrailers customer service was top notch in helping me get the right hitch for my situation. The trailer leveling system, (Pro series) and the pro series friction sway control have proven to be everything the manufacturer advertises. Sway and instability are essentially eliminated and handling, even in windy conditions, is comfortable and under control. This system is really essential for anyone considering RV'ing with a tow vehicle and trailer. I like that it was affordable and gets the job done with little or minimal effort on my part. Installation was simple and the instructions were clear. 315479

Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Replacement Shank Recommendation to Use Pro Series Weight Distribution System in 2.5 in Hitch
  • You will need a different shank for your weight distribution system since your Pro Series uses washers against the front of the shank to set the angle of the head of the system. I appreciate you sending in the picture that you did as it illustrates this perfectly with the # RP54976. For a similar shank with a solid front on the shank that will work for you we have the Equal-i-zer part # EQ90-02-4800 which would work well.

  • Can a 2015 Kia Sedona Safely Tow a 3,700 Pound Jayco Travel Trailer
  • What I recommend is a trailer that has a gross trailer weight that meets or is under the towing capacity of your 2015 Kia Sedona which is 3,500 pounds as long as the trailer has brakes. You can tow a trailer rated higher provided that the actual weight of the trailer does not exceed that 3,500 pound tow vehicle capacity. So they aren't lying about that but you do run the risk of overloading the tow vehicle by going with a heavier trailer. You will likely need suspension enhancement...

  • Can Springs Bars on Pro Series Weight Distribution System PS49903 Be Replaced with Lower Rated Bars
  • The head of your Pro Series Weight Distribution System # PS49903 is indeed compatible with lower-rated spring bars from Pro Series. For your system you can simply swap out the existing bars with the Pro Series # PS58439, which will downgrade the capacity of your system to 550 pounds. Having an over-rated system will definitely lead to the type of rough ride you described so replacing the bars is a great solution. Both round bars are included with this kit.

  • Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2004 Ford F-250 Towing 6,900 Pound Trailer
  • When choosing weight distribution you will want to go by the total tongue weight. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and adding to it the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the truck. For argument, lets say that you are towing the trailer and it weighs all of 6,900 pounds and there is nothing in the truck bed. The tongue weight, which is normally 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight, would be 690 to 1,035...

  • Compatibility of Pro Series Weight Distribution with Reese Dual Cam Sway Control
  • Your best bet to reduce the sway you are experiencing while retaining your Pro Series system would be to add an additional friction sway unit like part # 83660. A single unit is typically not effective on trailers longer than 26 feet, so for your 30 footer, an additional unit would be helpful in reducing sway. The degree to which the second unit would be helpful will depend on the strength of the crosswinds, the weight of the trailer, and on several other factors. Of the various systems...

  • Replacement Parts for Pro Series 1,000 Pound Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch
  • For Pro Series weight distribution hitch # PS49903 the bars are going to be # PS58441 for 2 bars rated for 1,000 pounds tongue weight. For the lift brackets that attach to the trailer frame you would need 2 of # PS58362. For the chains you would need 2 of kit # 55630. And for the sway control you will need # 83660. Based on the prices of all of these parts combined it would cost you less to go with the complete system, # PS49903. If the trailer is over 6,000 pounds or longer than 25...

  • What Does it Mean If You Need More Weight Distribution Chain Length
  • It sounds like the issue you have is that you need higher rated spring bars, not longer chains. The fact that you want to angle the head back even further would indicate that you aren't getting the amount of spring tension you need to properly distribute the tongue weight of your trailer. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2005 Chevy Tahoe and Dutchmen Aerolite 195QB Travel Trailer
  • When choosing a weight distribution system you will need to go by the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.I did some research and found that on a 2012 Dutchmen Aerolite 195QB the gross trailer weight is approximately 5,400 pounds. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight so we are looking at 540 to 810 pounds. If nothing is loaded behind the rear axle on the Tahoe...

  • Can the Trailer Be Backed Up when Using Pro Series Weight Distribution # PS49903
  • You will want to disengage the sway control for sure on the Pro Series weight distribution system, # PS49903, but not necessarily the spring bars when backing up. The issue for spring bars or sway control is that if you have to back up at an angle instead of straight that can produce too much stress on the system and could damage the system or trailer. If you are backing up in a straight line then you would not have to remove the bars. Taking the bars off is easy. You just use the...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2006 Chevy Suburban 2500 8.1 Liter V8 Towing 10,000 Pound Trailer
  • Since your 2006 Chevy Suburban trailer hitch is only rated for 5,000 pounds you will have to upgrade the hitch to tow your 10,000 pound trailer. The owners manual for your 'burban states that the 3/4 ton 2500 series with 8100 V8 and 3.73 rear end gear ratio has a capacity of 10,300 pounds gross trailer weight. With the 4.10 rear end it is rated for 12,000 pounds. Either way the capacity does exceed the gross trailer weight though if you have the 3.73 gears it will be close and you will...

  • Adjustable Ball Mount that Can be Used with Friction Sway Control
  • You can use sway control only with an adjustable ball mount in one of two ways. First, you could use sway control bracket # RP26003 which will fit a ball mount platform up to 2.610 inches wide. It also has a 1 inch diameter hitch ball hole. The other option is to weld on a sway control bracket # 3442. Welding should be performed by a qualified professional welder. For an adjustable ball mount that already has a sway control portion on it we have # 7390. It is rated for 6,000 pounds...

  • Does Pro Series Weight Distribution System PS49903 have to be Disconnected when Backing Up
  • Weight distribution systems that use bar-style friction sway control such as # PS49903 should be disconnected before backing up. If you are backing up perfectly straight then that would be ok but that is rarely the case with trailers! Disengaging the sway bar is not difficult but who wants to get in and out of the truck to do that? I recommend a system that does allow you to back up without having to disengage the sway control. For a system that is rated the same as that Pro Series...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 22 FT Wolf Pup Trailer with 550 LB Tongue Weight
  • Thanks for the detailed information on your trailer! As you know a key component to choosing the correct weight distribution system is knowing the trailer's exact tongue weight. Tongue weight is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The weight of the weight distribution system would not be included in the calculation. The ideal situation is to have...

  • Comparing Reese Dual Cam and Reese SC Weight Distribution on Ford F150 Towing 30 Foot Travel Trailer
  • When choosing a weight distribution system, it is best to begin the process knowing the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. The procedure for determining this is shown in the FAQ article I have linked you to. Since you are not able to confirm your tongue weight, please understand that anything I recommend will merely be an educated guess. I would recommend going with a 1,200 lb max capacity system to provide some cushion, since actual ready-to-roll tongue weight is not known....

  • Differences Between Pro Series # PS49901 and # PS49903 Weight Distribution Systems
  • When you're choosing a weight distribution system, you'll want to choose the system whose effective tongue weight range most closely matches the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. The weight of any cargo carried behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle should also be considered tongue weight. Ideally, you want the fully loaded tongue weight of the trailer to be as closes as possible to the middle of the effective tongue weight range of the system you choose. If...

  • Can Weight Distribution System Increase Tongue Weight Capacity of 2016 Honda Pilot
  • Adding a weight distribution system cannot increase the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle itself. A weight distribution system CAN increase the capacity of the hitch in certain instances, but the capacity of the vehicle cannot be increased. If the fully loaded and ready to tow camper tongue weight is greater than the 350 lb limit mentioned in your owner's manual, I wouldn't tow the camper with that vehicle. I cannot recommend anything that would contradict Honda's recommendations. Exceeding...

The only part needed with this hitch is a ball, # EQ91-00-6100, for a 2-5/16 inch diameter. This hitch does allow backing up. • Can Weight Distribution System Be Installed on an Unloaded Trailer
  • To get everything properly dialed in, ideally you'll want to trailer to be at its as towed weight. You could certainly install the weight distribution system using an empty trailer, but you'd need to re-adjust the tilt of the weight distribution head once the trailer is filled in order to distribute the correct amount of tongue weight to the front vehicle axle. If your trailer is longer than 25 feet, using an additional friction sway control unit like part # 83660 is recommended. I've...
