Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank, with a 10,000 pound gross trailer weight, and a 1,000 pound tongue weight. Part number C17342. You've decided you need a weight distribution system, this curt weight distribution system is a nice entry level setup. It comes with almost everything you need, the adjustable shank, the adjustable head, the spring bar, and the lift bracket, and the lift bracket tool. You will however need to purchase your own hitch ball, make sure it has an inch and a quarter diameter shank. One thing that sets this weight distribution apart from the rest, is its ability to accept bar-style friction sway control on either side of the head. Curt friction sway control is available, part number 17200. It features 3 adjustable points here on the shank, and the head tail has 5 adjustable positions.

The spring bar tension is adjusted with a chain and the lift bracket. The lift brackets are easy to install, there's no drilling required, they simple sit on top of your trailer's A frame and tightened down with the included hardware. Our spring bars measure 28 inches, and our bracket width measures 4 inches. Our shank offers a maximum drop of a half inch, and a maximum rise of 7-1/2 inches. Our hitch pin and clip, are included. Now let's take a look at how the weight distribution helps us out.

I'll go ahead and disconnect it, that's going to stack height measurement of our vehicle. Here at the rear, we're going to measure from the ground, up to the other side of the wheel well, we've got about 39-1/4 inches. Here at the front, we've got about 38-3/4 of an inch. We want to be sure to write these measurements down, because these measurements we want to get back to when we engage and get our weight distribution hooked up. Now I've got my trailer hooked up without any weight distribution at all. Here on the wheel, we're squatting about an inch and a half from our stack measurement, and here on the front we've tilted up about three quarters of an inch.

This can cause handling issues, traction issues and tire wear. All in all, less than desirable. With our weight distribution hooked up, we're in for a much more enjoyable ride. We're back to stack height here at the rear, and we've only got about a quarter inch tilt here at the front. The weight distribution does just that, it distributes the weight evenly between the axles of your trailer and your tow vehicle. Let's take a closer look on how it's installed.

The shank can be installed in either the rise or drop position. The head height is set with the included bolts and lock nuts, and the head tilt spacer locks in our tilt. Increasing head tilt will allow supply more tension to the bars giving us more lift. Our bars are attached to the head with the included pins and clips. Our bars are attached to the lift bracket with the pre-installed chains. The fewer the links, the more tension you have, though you won't want to drop below 5 links. Finally our lift bracket is secured to our trailer's A frame. There's no drilling required, it has all the hardware included. Though you may have to relocate your battery box, or your propane tanks. That's going to complete our look at the Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank, with a 10,000 pound gross trailer weight, and a 1,000 pound tongue weight. Part number C17342.

Great service on shipment of my trailer hitch. The shipment went out quickly with tracking information. The hitch arrived well packed and seems to be very heavily built, so no worries when the time comes to tow. The instructions with the hitch are well written for ease of installation. Thanks! 151352

  • What is the Difference between Curt Weight Distribution Systems # 17302 and # C17342
  • The difference between Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System with Shank, 1,000 lbs. TW, 10,000 lbs. GTW Item # 17302 and # C17342 is the style of the trunnion bars. Kit # C17342 has bars that pin into the trunnion couplings whereas with # 17302 the bars are bolted to the trunnion couplings. They offer the same performance and specs but it is easier to remove the pin-in bars so if you will put on and remove the spring bars frequently the pin-in style is your best option. For...

  • Correct Weight Distribution System for R-pod I80 With 500 lbs Tongue Weight
  • Crazy might be a bit extreme, but the answer is you will not want to use the Curt Weight Distribution System # C17342 with your trailer. This system is rated for use with a total tongue weight (the tongue weight of your loaded R-pod 180 plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2015 Ford F-150) of 900 lbs - 1,000 lbs. That means essentially it will be like you aren't using a weight distribution system at all. As long as your total tongue weight is 500 lbs I recommend...

  • Turning Restrictions When Using Weight Distribution System # 17342
  • With the Curt Weight Distribution System # C17342 your turning will not really be any more restricted than your regular turning with trailer attached unless you have frame that sits lower than your coupler. That lower frame along with the additional width of the head or the bar height could hit your trailer frame or weight distribution system head and cause contact. You will need to check your specific trailer fit to see what turning restrictions you have based on this if any. If you...
