Product Expert Lindsey S's Opinion

Why would I buy this?

  • Great for V-nose trailers because the short arms don't need as much clearance along the frame as standard arms do
  • Mounting points on both sides of head let you add on two friction sway controls, if needed
  • Trunnion bars offer more ground clearance than round bars

Why wouldn't I buy this?

  • Chains don't provide much tension or stability, so this won't do anything to keep your trailer in line
  • And there's no sway control included either
  • You'll need to buy the hitch ball separately
Perfect for your short-tongue trailer, this heavy-duty weight-distribution system will help to evenly distribute the load over the axles of both your tow vehicle and trailer for a smooth, controlled ride. Shank included. Hitch ball sold separately. Lowest Prices for the best weight distribution from Curt. Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - WD Only - C17333 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Short-Arm weight distribution system. This weight distribution system is going to be perfect for your short-tongue trailer. It's going to help evenly distribute weight over the axles of your towed vehicle and trailer. It's going to offer better stability and control. Ultimately, it's going to create a more level ride for both the towed vehicle and the trailer. Now, this unit is going to feature the trunnion springing bars; these are constructed as solid, forged steel for strength and durability. The bars, again, are shorter than those in standard systems to accommodate your short-tongue trailer.

These bars actually measure 28-3/4" long. I do want to mention that you can adjust the spring bar tension by switching the lengths in the lift chains. That's going to allow you to fine-tune your system. The lift brackets are a nice low-profile design so that way they're designed so they don't interfere with frame-mounted accessories, and gas tanks, battery boxes, generators, toolboxes, stuff like that. Then when it comes to how much room they're going to take up along the trailer frame, we simply take a width measurement of that, it looks like it's going to measure about 4" wide. Then the opening, that's going to give us a measurement of 2-3/4".

I also want to point out that these basically just clamp onto the trailer frame, so they have a threaded hole right here that will accept one of these bolts. If you have a narrower or thinner trailer frame, you'd want to use the longer bolts that are supplied with the kit. If you have a thicker or wider trailer frame, you'd want to use the short bolts that are supplied with the kit. You can also tilt the head assembly. Desired tilt is achieved with the included adjustment rods, and it's going to come with two washers. Now, it's going to come with two differently-sized rods and two washers.

These are going to ensure that you get the appropriate tilt that you need for your application. There's going to be a little space right here, so these would install between the face of the shank and that opening there at the head assembly. Then that little punch-out would come out through this hole located right here, which would be directly below the ball. In the instructions, it does include a really helpful sheet. You can see there that by using a different combination of rod and washer combo, the rods are different lengths, you can really get the tilt that you need for your application. The information sheet makes adjustment very, very easy. The unit also comes with a hex bolt.

It's located down here at the bottom of the head assembly. That's going to act as a set bolt, so once you have the adjustments made, you can tighten that up. That's going to make the unit more rigid. The head assembly has the attachment points for a sway control system to be installed on either side. Sway control systems are sold separately. The unit is made from a steel construction. It's going to feature a very well-done powder-coated finish. It's going to do a great job at lasting a long time and resisting rust and corrosion. It also includes this snap-up lever; that's to get the lift chains in place that applies the proper tension. It also releases that tension when you're ready to disengage the unit, but the snap-up lever helps ease installation by reducing the amount of lifting that's required by the trailer jack. Now, it does not come with a hitch ball; that is sold separately. It does require a hitch ball with an 1-1/4" diameter shank. The maximum tongue weight for this unit is 1,500 pounds. The maximum gross towing weight is 15,000 pounds. It is designed for a 2"x2" trailer hitch receiver that's rated for uses with weight distribution systems. The included shank features a six-hole design for your adjustment holes. It's going to have an incremental height adjustment of an 1-1/4". That's the distance between those adjustment holes center on center. If you're using the shank in the rise position, and if you have the head assembly at its highest setting, it's going to give you a maximum rise of around 7 to 7-1/2". That's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. If you have that shank in the dropped position with the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's going to give you maximum drop of about 1/2" to 1" doing that same measurement. Again, everything that you need is included. It's going to come with . except the hitch ball, but it does come with a 5/8" diameter pin with a clip. It secures the unit inside the receiver tube of your hitch, and it does come with very detailed installation instructions and a really nice owner's manual that walks you through just some tips and responsibilities for owning and maintenance in the weight distribution system. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt short-arm weight distribution system with a gross towing weight of 15,000 pounds.

This is a serious hitch if you are needing one that allows for up to1,500lb.tongue weight. The build quality is very good and it fits our trailer which due to the V- Nose has limited space for the traditional longer trunnion spring arms. We also like the spacers that are used to position the head for placement of the spring arms. Unlike the head locks on most hitches, there is absolutely no way for this to slip or move after it is adjusted. We have no doubts that we will get years of service from it. Thank you etrailer.com! 107566

That hitch has been great! Our approximate 7,000lb., 27 ft. enclosed race car hauling trailer, is now very stable. With the bars and hitch we were using, which were much to small, it was a real handful, now you hardly know it is back there!Great piece of equipment!

Review from a similar Curt Short-Arm in Weight Distribution

I had a fastway e2 trunnion 12k pound hitch and hated it. It was great if you didnt need much pressure on the bars and always hooked up while on flat even ground. Most times I had to use a 3 foot prybar to get the weight transfer bars off the trailer and a 3 foot cheater bar to get the bars on!!! This 15k pound hitch from curt is great!!!! The welds could be better (pretty picky I'm a fabricator by trade) but nothing beats this style hitch. It may take an extra step if you want the friction brake but it is worth it. I run 2 friction brakes as I have a 38ft travel trailer and is pretty much a giant sail. The trunnion hitch couldn't handle that camper in the wind and there wasnt a way to adjust the bars for a windy day. but this hitch with 2 brakes works great. Dont always need 2 brakes but I like the option for when its windy out and we have a 2 hour drive on the expressway!!! 610729

I had an L shaped weight distribution hitch before I bought this Curt model from E trailer. If you the coop ape the two the older one wS easier to operate. The Pins that lock the chain brackets in please are difficult to remove and adding wd40 does not help also this new one seems to be lower to the ground,, making me bend over and sometimes or even get to my knees to hook it up .My wife used to be able to help me with the older one the new one she is not able so I do both sides myself . Also the part that connects to the truck you need to hold it sideways then flip the the release up and maneuver it he top 2 tabs into place , lot more work than the L shaped one I had. It’s ok otherwise. 615701

Ridiculously fast shipping and a perfect price! Arrived in good condition. Installation instruction were simple to follow. The actual product information from CURT as to the specific dimension as an overall unit (i.e. mechanical drawing) would be helpful to determine if the product works correctly for your trailer. Enough was provided that I took a chance but we did have to raise my AC unit on the front of my trailer 2.5" and move one of it's support bars back in order to install the weight distribution system. Not at all any fault or any concern of Etrailer, but just wanted to share this note in case other have a propane rack or something else on their tongue. 230288

When I reached out to see where that max weight rating comes from my contact said the 15,000 lbs towing/1,500 lbs tongue weight ratings for the Chain Hangers # C17005 come from the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution (WD) # C17333 being the highest rated system they have. They have tested and approved it to work with all of their WD systems and since the highest rated WD from Curt is 15,000 lbs towing/ 1,500 lbs tongue this...

  • Rear Air Bag Helper Springs for a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4
  • If the rear end of your 2014 Ram 1500 sags when the trailer is coupled then weight distribution would be the ideal solution. It is also recommended if the trailer weighs at least 50 percent of the gross vehicle weight which is true for your application. You can use air bag helper springs if you want but I recommend weight distribution. Air Lift springs # AL60818 are the right ones for your 2014 Ram 1500 4x4. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. If...

  • Will Curt Short Arm Weight Distribution # C17333 Work on Dutchman Coleman 28BHWE
  • I looked up the specs on the Dutchman Coleman 28BHWE and the unloaded tongue weight looks to be 857 lbs so when the trailer is loaded it would pretty easily get to be above 1,000 lbs (especially when you consider that weight behind rear axle of tow vehicle counts as tongue weight as well) so the Curt Short Arm kit part # C17333 that you referenced would fit and work well.

  • Length of Bars on Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System
  • The Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution Systems have trunnion bars which measure 28-3/8 inches, according to the manufacturer; this is quite a bit shorter than the 33 inch trunnion bars on the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution # RP66073, for example. The Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System comes with a number of different tongue weight options which I'll list so you can choose the correct one. - Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank - Trunnion Bar - 6,000 lbs...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for Trailer that Weighs 10,000 lbs with V-Nose
  • Since your trailer has a V-nose where most of the frame is under the trailer you'll need to use a set of bolt on brackets for the chain hangers like the # C17005. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well....

  • Weight Distribution System Compatible with 2018 Jayco Octane 273 Travel Trailer
  • Your 2018 Jayco Octane 237 does not require the short bar length of 28-5/8 inches the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank # C17333 you referenced offers. However, it will also not be an issue. I recommend hitch ball # 19286 with this hitch for a 2-5/16 inch ball to match your coupler. If you want a weight distribution system that also has integrated sway control, I recommend the Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Active Sway Control # C17501 which will also...

  • Can a 2-5/16" Hitch Ball be Used with the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System # C17333
  • Yes, you can install a 2-5/16" hitch ball on the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System # C17333. All that is required is that the shank have a diameter of 1-1/4" like the Draw-Tite 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 19286 had. The shank of the system fits a 2" trailer hitch receiver which is where you are getting that information from. Essentially any hitch ball with a 1-1/4" diameter shank can be installed on this weight distribution system.

  • Weight Distribution Shank Recommendation for Towing with Lifted Suspension Vehicle
  • For lifted vehicles we have the drop weight distribution shank part # C17125 or part # C17132 to allow the trailer to be towed level. The part # C17125 can do a drop of up to 13-3/4 inches and the # C17132 can do a drop up to 8 inches. What's great about these shanks is that not only do they fit the Curt weight distribution systems like what you have but they also fit other brands as well since they are all made to the same dimensions.
