Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - C17322 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C17322. This is the Curt Weight Distribution System, and it's going to include a sway control system. This unit's going to help evenly distribute the weight over the axles, of your tow vehicle and your trailer for safety, stability, and control. It's going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Now this piece right here, this is going to be our sway control system. The friction sway control is going to reduce sway that's caused by winds, curving roads, and sudden maneuvers.

It's going to feature the adjustable tension, right here. This is going to let you create the perfect degree of control and resistance. You're also going to have the integrated handle. This is going to engage and disengage the system. Once it's installed, the socket right here is going to install over that hitch ball. That ball can be positioned on either side of the head assembly.

That would go on there, and then you're going to have a spacer plate, and the frame ball, that's going to attach the system to the fame of the trailer. The sway control system is going to be held in place with a couple clips. It just goes in the side here and secures it against the ball. It's easily removable, all you have to do is release the two screen locking-pins, and then you can remove the system. The sway control system is included.

With the sway control system you're going to get the actual sway control, you're going to get the sway control ball, the trailer-mounted attachment ball, the spacer plate, and all the necessary hardware to get that system installed. Back to our weight distribution system we're going to have the trunnion spring bars. These are going to be constructed of solid forged steel for strength and durability. You can adjust the spring-bar tension by switching the links in the lift chains, so that's going to allow you to fine-tune your system. These right here are going to be our lift brackets. They get mounted to the frame of our trailer.

If we take a measurement of that real quick we can see that they're going to take up about 4 inches of space along the trailer frame, and the opening size right here to fit around the frame, that's going to give us a measurement of about 2-3/4 of an inch. This is going to be ideal for trailer frames that measure 2-1/2 inches in width. Those chains are going to connect to this right here, and then again you can adjust the spring bar tension by switching the lengths in the chains. The lift brackets are going to come with two different sized bolts. You're going to get a 2-inch bolt that goes into this portion right here. It secures it the frame of the trailer. You're also going to get your 4-inch long bolts. Now the 2-inch long bolts are included to fit larger trailer frames. Another neat thing about this system is here at the head assembly. You can actually tilt the head down to get the tilt that you need for your particular application. In order to do that is going to use an adjustment rod and washer design. You're going to get two adjustment rods, very similar to spacer rivets. They're going to go in between the opening of the head assembly and the front face of the adjustable shank. Then you obviously use the shorter one for less tilt, and use the larger one for more tilt. It's going to come with two washers so you can add or remove those to get the desired tilt that you need. Another neat thing about those is that's kind of a newer system and it's going to come with a tilt-adjustment instruction sheet, and it's going to walk you through that process to get the tilt that you need for your application. Also here on the head assembly we're going to have a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. The unit's going to be made from a steel construction. Everything's going to have a nice powder-coated finish on it so it's going to resist rusting corrosion. This lever right here, this is called our snap-up lever. This is going to ease the installation by reducing the lifting that's required by the trailer jack to get our spring bars in place. It goes over this portion here and that's going to assist us in raising and lowering the spring bars. The maximum tongue weight for this unit is going to be 1,000 pounds. The maximum gross towing weight is 10,000 pounds. The unit is designed for 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receivers that are rated for use with the rate-distribution system. This is going to be the shank. This portion back here is the portion that goes into your 2-inch by 2-inch hitch and it comes with the 5/8-inch pin and clip to get that installed and secured. Now the shank link from edge to edge is going to measure about 12-inches long from the center of the mount holes, to the center of the hitch pin hole, that's going to measure about 8-inches. This unit is going to feature a 6-hole mount design. These holes are going to be separated on center apart from one another by an inch and a quarter. When using this system in the rise position, with the head assembly at the highest setting it's going to give us a maximum rise of about 2-1/2 inches from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of our hitch to the top of our ball platform. With it installed at the lowest setting, with the shank in the drop position, it's going to give us a maximum drop of about 1/2-inch, and that's still measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of our hitch to the top of the ball platform. All the necessary hardware to get the head assembly attached to the shank is included. That shank is also going to be made from a solid steel construction. That's going to do it for today's review of part number C17322. This is the Curt Weight Distribution system with the included sway control system.

Like your product, but the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. This is the second one we bought and both were delivered in broken damaged boxes. Luckily all the parts were there. Thanks for the quick delivery. 643252

I had an L shaped weight distribution hitch before I bought this Curt model from E trailer. If you the coop ape the two the older one wS easier to operate. The Pins that lock the chain brackets in please are difficult to remove and adding wd40 does not help also this new one seems to be lower to the ground,, making me bend over and sometimes or even get to my knees to hook it up .My wife used to be able to help me with the older one the new one she is not able so I do both sides myself . Also the part that connects to the truck you need to hold it sideways then flip the the release up and maneuver it he top 2 tabs into place , lot more work than the L shaped one I had. It’s ok otherwise. 615701

My weight distribution hitch worked perfectly. It was very easy to install and the instructions made it simple to adjust for the weight I was pulling. The sway control that I received was great as well holding me steady on the highway, even with strong cross-winds. An impressive product that I would definitely recommend. 283532

Easier to use then another brand. Only problem was that somehow I bent one of torsion bar retaining clips. Was afraid I would ruin it trying to straighten it out but didn't. I use a colored zip tie to mark the proper chain link to eliminate guessing. 241555

This is a serious hitch if you are needing one that allows for up to1,500lb.tongue weight. The build quality is very good and it fits our trailer which due to the V- Nose has limited space for the traditional longer trunnion spring arms. We also like the spacers that are used to position the head for placement of the spring arms. Unlike the head locks on most hitches, there is absolutely no way for this to slip or move after it is adjusted. We have no doubts that we will get years of service from it. Thank you etrailer.com! 107566

That hitch has been great! Our approximate 7,000lb., 27 ft. enclosed race car hauling trailer, is now very stable. With the bars and hitch we were using, which were much to small, it was a real handful, now you hardly know it is back there!Great piece of equipment!

I had a fastway e2 trunnion 12k pound hitch and hated it. It was great if you didnt need much pressure on the bars and always hooked up while on flat even ground. Most times I had to use a 3 foot prybar to get the weight transfer bars off the trailer and a 3 foot cheater bar to get the bars on!!! This 15k pound hitch from curt is great!!!! The welds could be better (pretty picky I'm a fabricator by trade) but nothing beats this style hitch. It may take an extra step if you want the friction brake but it is worth it. I run 2 friction brakes as I have a 38ft travel trailer and is pretty much a giant sail. The trunnion hitch couldn't handle that camper in the wind and there wasnt a way to adjust the bars for a windy day. but this hitch with 2 brakes works great. Dont always need 2 brakes but I like the option for when its windy out and we have a 2 hour drive on the expressway!!! 610729

Ridiculously fast shipping and a perfect price! Arrived in good condition. Installation instruction were simple to follow. The actual product information from CURT as to the specific dimension as an overall unit (i.e. mechanical drawing) would be helpful to determine if the product works correctly for your trailer. Enough was provided that I took a chance but we did have to raise my AC unit on the front of my trailer 2.5" and move one of it's support bars back in order to install the weight distribution system. Not at all any fault or any concern of Etrailer, but just wanted to share this note in case other have a propane rack or something else on their tongue. 230288

Ask the Experts about this Curt Weight Distribution
Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Choosing Correct Curt Weight Distribution System for Trailer with GVWR of 6,243 Pounds
  • You upgraded your weight distribution from the Curt short-arm system, part # C17322, to the Curt TruTrack, part # C17500, which is much better system but it's still rated too high most likely. It all depends on the loaded trailer's tongue weight. Both of those systems are rated for 800 to 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. So you want the tongue weight of your loaded trailer added to the amount of weight you add behind the rear axle of your two vehicle to be between 800 and 1,000 pounds....

  • Is Curt 1,000 Pound Weight Distribution System Rated too High for 6,250 Pound Boat Trailer
  • Curt weight distribution system # C17322 is rated for 800 to 1,000 pounds tongue weight so it would be overkill for your trailer unless you also have weight behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle that increases the tongue weight to at least 800 pounds. There is a similar Curt system, # C17330, rated for 500 to 600 pounds tongue weight and another, # C17331, rated for 600 to 800 pounds. To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the...

Based on the numbers you mentioned I recommend a weight distribution system like part # C17322. For a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball you would then want the part # A-6. The part # C17322 would technically work, but since it is rated a bit too high you would end up with a harsher ride quality than the # C17341. Both systems will allow backing up. You could weld on a 1/2 inch spacer to your trailer and the frame...

  • Can A Weight Distribution System be Left Installed When Backing Up a Trailer
  • Basically with any weight distribution system/sway control you can back a trailer up with it installed IF you only plan to back up mainly in a straight line. If the trailer has to be jackknifed at all then you have to disconnect the setup. The rule of thumb I use for how tight of a turn you can go is basically how tight of an angle can your trailer be at moving forward with the steering wheel all the way turned.

  • How to Pick Out a Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Toyota Tacoma Towing a 24 ft Thor Camper
  • The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. If your tongue weight is right...

  • Weight of Curt Short Arm Weight Distribution System When Installing In Hitch
  • The total weight of the Curt Short Arm weight distribution system part # C17322 is 107 lbs, but you have to consider that the frame brackets stay permanently mounted to the trailer as well as the friction sway control unit. Also, the spring bars can detach from the head of the system too which allows you to take the system apart in pieces that are very reasonable in weight. So each of the bars are going to weigh around 14 lbs, and then the head and shank will weigh right at 40 lbs as...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Towing Trailer Loaded Weighing 7,740 Pounds Towed by F150
  • To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The most important rating to use when matching up a weight distribution system is the actual tongue weight. The weight distribution I recommend is the Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution with sway control...

  • Weight Distribution System for an ATC Raven Cargo Trailer
  • I do have an option for you but we do not offer a longer version of the Replacement Square U-bolts for 26000 Dual Cam Sway Control part # 58000. However, this is more or less irrelevant as you cannot use the Reese Dual Cam Weight Distribution System on an aluminum frame trailer like your ATC Raven Cargo Trailer because it creates too much stress for the frame to handle. The other issues you will have is that the Reese Dual Cam Weight Distribution System will require that you have space...

  • How to Determine the Right Replacement Bearings and Seals for a 1988 Airstream Excella Trailer
  • There are a couple of ways to determine the correct replacement bearing and seals for a trailer. I can determine if we have replacements by the old bearing numbers. The bearing numbers are stamped in the sides of the bearings. The other way is to take measurements of the spindle. I have included a picture that shows where you would measure. You will need to use dial or digital calipers because the measurements have to be as accurate as possible.
