Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - EQ37140ET Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4-Point Sway Control. Now, a weight distribution system creates a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and for your trailer. This unit features a 2 5/16 inch hitch ball, it's included. It has a gross towing weight capacity of 14000 pounds, and it is designed for trailers that have a tongue weight of 1000 to 1400 pounds. It slides into 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver that's rated for us with weight distribution. Now, with the weight distribution system, one of the main components is the spring bar. Adding spring bars to your towing setup really helps apply leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer.

That results in an even distribution of weight throughout. It results in a smooth ride, a level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch. This unit features integrated 4-point sway control that's designed to work and stop trailer sway, really before it ever begins or before it's felt by the driver or by those riding in the vehicle. The head, right here, creates two points of sway control using rotational friction, so the downward pressure placed on the hitch ball fights or battles the upward pressure created by the spring bars. The upward force is placed on the spring bars on both sides of the system, creating the rotation friction that forces your trailer to stay in line at all times. The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L brackets that are mounted to the trailer tongue. This unique design makes this system compatible with surge-type brake actuators.

The spring bars are designed to flex for a controlled, even ride. These spring bars are constructed of a specialized steel for superior dexterity and spring, so this pliability is very important in minimizing trailer bounce. The brackets are a no-drill, clamp-on bracket that can be adjusted along the trailer frame. They don't take up much space on the trailer frame, so this system is great for accommodating frame-mounted items such as gas tanks, battery boxes, toolboxes, generators, and so on.When it comes to the head assembly, you can tilt it. Desired tilt is achieved with a traditional spacer rivet and washer design, so you just add or remove washers from the spacer rivet to tilt the head up or down and fine-tune the leverage on the entire system.

That basically installs between the head assembly and the mount right here. Also, on the bottom, we do have a set screw that can be tightened once you have it set the way you want it, and that's really gonna help eliminate any rattle or play between the head assembly and the shank that's included with the kit.The steel has all been dipped, so it's a dipped steel construction. It's very durable and corrosion resistant. It comes with a snap-up lever to ease installation of the spring bars by reducing the amount of lifting required by your trailer jack. The product's made in the USA.

The sway control brackets get positioned about 27 to 32 inches back from the center of your coupler along your trailer tongue or trailer frame. This will fit maximum trailer frame heights of up to six inches. As you can see, it has a lot of holes on it, so it is completely adjustable to thus fit your particular trailer frame. Again, the shank is included, as well as the pin and clip to secure it in your hitch. All the necessary hardware is included as well. The shank link from the center of the hitch pin hold to the center of the adjustment holes is about eight inches. From the center of the hitch pin hold to the center of the hitch ball is about 12 inches. The total height adjustment along the shank is 7 1/2 inches, so if you're using this in the rise position with the head assembly at the highest setting, it's gonna give you a maximum rise of around seven inches. That's measured from the inside top edge of the receiver tip of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. If you have this in the drop position with the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's gonna give you a maximum drop of around three inches. The holes on the unit are separated on center by an inch and a quarter, so that's your incremental height adjustment. Again, the product's made in the USA and it's covered with a limited lifetime warranty. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution system with Integrated 4-Point Sway Control.

Product works as advertised. We pull a 10,000 lb 24' catering trailer that the weight distribution is far from even with convection oven, 2 door commercial refrigerator and more. We were having severe swaying problems on the highways. Bought this sway control and it stopped all swaying. Before I couldn't hit 55mph without uncontrollable sway and now there is no speed limit that causes sway. Very easy to hook up, follow directions and its a no brainer. After 1 year I still use it every time and seems to work just as well. Re-adjusted for a new truck in minutes. Doesn't interfere with any wire or chains and we have 3 camera system along with custom frame platform on front of trailer to support 2- 100 lb propane tanks and a generator and was still easy to fit on and works great. 517465

From my limited experience with the hitch, it appears to be very high quality. Have not had it out on a long trip yet, but did do a 20 mile road test with speeds up to 70mph and it was very stable. It is on a Toyota Tundra 5.7 and is pulling a 23.5 foot toyhauler that probably weighed around 6500 lbs. at the time of my short road test. 427957

I'm towing a 35' windjammer and this hitch work wonders. I had purchase another brand and had control problems since day one. the equalizer makes this travel trailer behave. Should have bought it first. 565798

I bought this hitch because the dealer I purchased my new trailer from undersized the new Equal-i-zer hitch I purchased along with the trailer. Even though I used the hitch for the last year I finally decided I had to upgrade it because the spring bars were just not quite adequate keeping the trailer level and transferring the weight. My experience with the Equal-I-zer hitch has been satisfactory because of ease of hooking up and unhooking. The integrated friction control has worked very well and the 4 point design makes backing up without having to unhook a friction control device is convenient. You can leave the spring bars on when backing up. I am quite happy with the Equal-i-zer brand and would recommend this hitch to anyone in the market for a new hitch. 575202

Cuts down sway considerably. Noisy on turns because it uses friction on bars to control the sway. Definatly worth the price but not as good as a Hensley. Would I buy again, yes. Hook up is a little more physical getting the friction bars onto the L brackets but easier once you learn not to put full weight of trailer on the ball until you position the friction side bars on the brackets. Own several trailers and this purchase allows me to move to trailer needed by just buying an extra set of L brackets for each trailer. Seems to be well built and no problems after a year of use. Glad I paired my purchase with power post. This helps find the sweet spot when hooking up. 558212

If you hitch up the trailer, and use the trailer jack to raise both the front of the trailer and the rear of the tow vehicle by a few inches, youll find that enough of the tension is taken out of the system so the spring bars are easier to put in place.

I had been using a less expensive competitor sway hitch with chains on a 27 ft. camper. I didn't think the performance of the hitch was too bad but I didn't know what I was missing. We recently purchased a 32 ft. toy hauler and I tried using the old hitch. The performance was horrible. After a recommendation on the correct hitch from etrailer and reading the reviews, I purchased the Equalizer 14,000 pound hitch. Man what a difference! The toy hauler pulls straight as an arrow. In addition, the semi trucks don't suck and push the rig all over the road when they pass. Lastly, the wife doesn't have a death grip on the door arm rest. She actually reads a book during the trip which says it all. The only complaint is that it is noisy when pulling through the campgrounds. But who really cares when it performs flawlessly on the road. Thanks so much etrailer! Walt 442118

I It’s working out great! I bought the plastic clips for the L brackets to reduce the hitch noise when entering and leaving in the campground but didn’t help. Nonetheless, still a wonderful hitch and would buy again.

Walt - 11/21/2018

The jackets reduce the sound by a very small degree, but remember that metal on metal friction that creates the noise is what's providing your sway control so eliminating the noise would eliminate the performance of that function as well.

I experienced no sway problems after changing to the Equal-i-zer hitch. I pull a 30 foot travel trailer with a 1200 lbs TW. My original 2500 Dodge Ram had air bags. I recently bought a new truck and discovered I didn't need to install air bags thanks to the Equal-i-zer hitch. One year and over 5000 miles of towing I can say, I am very, very satisfied with this product. 603717

This is an outstanding hitch. Easy to install, we did it on our camping trip and the drive home was so much more comfortable then with the old weight distribution hitch. There was no sway whatsoever. We pull a 30 foot camp trailer with an F150 and the weight distribution with this hitch is unbelievable. I now have peace of mind knowing my new hitch will keep my trailer from swaying anymore. This is a great product and I highly recomend it. 455416

Just got the equalizer 14000 weight distribution hitch and the airlift bags in today from ups. Took a little over 2 hours to install both. The hitch I had before combined with the stock ram 1500 suspension was all over the road with my toy hauler. I couldn't go over 35-40 miles an hour with out feeling like I was going to lose my rig and anyone that's ever been in that situation knows what a white knuckle experience that is. I just got back from a test drive and it is unbelievable the difference those two items made. I got up to 70 and it drove like a dream. For reference my toy hauler is 8500#s with a 850# tongue weight. Thank you etrailer for the best product, fast/free shipping and definitely the lowest price. 382186

I received my Equal-I-zer hitch in just a couple days through etrailer.com. They also had the best price I have seen for this hitch. I had the same hitch several years ago for towing a toyhauler. I let it go with the toyhauler when I sold it because we purchased a 5th wheel toyhauler. Well we have gone full circle and purchased another tag toyhauler. After some research I see the Equal-I-zer is still the top rated weight distribution hitch so it was an easy decision to buy it again. 339702

Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Upgrading a 12K Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System to a 14K
  • There area few differences between the 1,200 and 1,400 pound Equal-I-zer systems. The heads are different and the spring bars are different. If your tongue weight is over 1,200 pound then the 1,200 pound system is not rated high enough. When calculating tongue weight for weight distribution you go by the total tongue weight. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle....

  • Trailer Hitch, Brake Controller and Weight Distribution for 2019 VW Atlas
  • Yes, you can use a weight distribution system with your 2019 Volkswagen Atlas and to answer your other question, the Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 is a fantastic option. Before that you need to start with a trailer hitch that is compatible with a weight distribution system and for that you will need the Draw-Tite # 76176. This is a 2 inch hitch with a 900 lb tongue weight capacity and 6,000 lb towing capacity; it will be a great hitch for your Atlas because not only does...

  • Replacement Equalizer Weight Distribution Spring Bars to Increase Capacity
  • It is usually possible to replace the spring bars in a weight distribution hitch setup so long as the two sets of bars are the same type, both trunnion style for instance, and both are from the same generation of hitch. A 10-year-old setup may not be able to use current-model replacement spring bars. Based on your trailer dry hitch weight of 918-lbs (which I presume means the trailer's unloaded weight) bars rated for 1200-lbs may not be stiff enough. A properly-loaded 8800-lb trailer...

  • Parts Needed to Convert Equal-I-Zer System to 1,400 lb Tongue Weight System
  • The difference is the spring bars of the systems and the amount of weight they are designed for in tongue weight. So if you replaced the spring bars of your current system with the part # EQ90-01-1499 you'd have a 1,400 lb system like what you need. You also have to swap head out too though so you'd also need # EQ90-02-1400.

  • How to Select Weight Distribution/Sway Control System for 36-Foot 9000-lb Travel Trailer
  • Friction bar anti-sway systems work better on smaller and lighter trailers although doubling up with two units can work satisfactorily with some longer trailers. Still, the performance of an integrated weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) system will beat simple friction units any day of the week. I suggest you first install a properly-rated WD/SC system, before making mods to your truck's suspension, since you may find that you do not need the Superspring kit at all. The key to...

  • Weight Distribution for 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty Towing 26 Foot Trailer
  • In order to choose the best weight distribution system, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2017 Ford F-350. To determine your trailer's tongue weight you can use a scale such as the Sherline # 5780 or by use one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on...

  • Best Weight Distribution System for 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi W/4 Lift and 7,500 lb Travel Trailer
  • You will be okay with a 7,500 lb travel trailer with an appropriate weight distribution system based on the numbers you gave. Because you don't know what trailer you will be getting yet, the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66561 is a great option because the total tongue weight range of this system is 700 to 1400 lbs which is a broader range than most. The total tongue weight is the loaded trailer tongue weight along with any cargo behind the rear axle...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2018 Jayco Octane SL 272 with 1,000 to 1,500 Pounds Tongue Weight
  • I looked up your 2018 Jayco Octane SL 272 (nice trailer) and I noticed a couple of things about it that could affect the fit of a weight distribution system such as # RP66074. First I noticed that on the frame behind the propane tanks it looks like there is a metal structure welded to the bottom of the frame. With the weight distribution brackets in place on the frame that extra piece on the trailer frame could make contact with the spring bars. The brackets mount 30 inches back along...

  • Changing a 14K Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System to a 12K System
  • I spoke with my contact at Equal-i-zer who said that the arms of the 14K Weight Distribution (WD) system # EQ37140ET and the 12K WD system # EQ37120ET are compatible with each other. In fact, he said they are the exact same bars. The difference between the systems actually stems from the head unit. To step down to the 12K system you will need to use the head unit # EQ90-02-1200 instead of the 14K head unit # EQ90-02-1400 that you are using. You want to make sure your WD system has...

  • Best Weight Distribution System for C-Channel Trailer Frames
  • The Curt MV Weight Distribution System part # C17057 is not ideal for c-channel trailer frames. You could still use this system on your trailer but you would want to weld steel places on the frame rails where the frame brackets of the Curt MV sit. A better option for you would be to use a system that clamps around both sides of the frame like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37140ET. The Equal-i-zer system works with trailers that have a total tongue weight (TTW)...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Towing a 2004 Coachman Cascade 30TBS Travel Trailer
  • It sounds like you already know how to find the a correct weight distribution system by using your trailer's loaded tongue weight added to the weight behind the Ram's rear axle. That's a great start. Since your trailer's gross vehicle weight rating is 8,720 pounds it's likely going to have a loaded tongue weight between 900 and 1,300 pounds. If it's loaded to its max weight. The 720 pounds tongue weight you mentioned is its dry tongue weight. Once your trailer is loaded and you...
