Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction-sway-control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - EQ37100ET Review

Today we're gong to be taking a look at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4 Point Sway Control, this system is going to have tunnel weight rating of 600 pounds to 1,000 pounds and a maximum gross towing weight rate of 10,000 pounds. Now what this system does is it evenly distributes weight over the axles of your tow vehicle and your trailer which is going to offer better stability and better control. Ultimately a weight distribution system is going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Now again, this one's going to have integrated 4 point sway control which is really going to help limit side to side movement of your trailer. We're going to have these brackets right here that are going to keep the spring bars in place for a rigid system that holds the trailer in line at all times. This unit does not use lift chains so that way the spring bars aren't able to move freely, they're going to be held in place and they're going to slide back and forth, which is going to create steel on steel friction. Down here we're going to have 2 points of sway control that are created by the steel on steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within these L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. The other 2 points of sway control are here at the head assembly, it's a really nice feature of the unit.

The downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combated by the upward pressure that is exerted by the spring bars that are mounted into these sockets right here. Those are going to be held in place with pins and clips, nice sturdy durable design there. The upward force that's placed on the spring bars on either side of the system creates the rotational friction that essentially forces your trailer in line at all times. With this system we're going to have direct friction that's applied to the spring bars. It's really going to help stop sway right away. No additional parts are needed, nothing that can be added on to increase it's all built in, it's integrated and it's going to provide an extremely durable functional sway control system.

That's a really nice design of the unit. Now the unique design of the unit makes this system compatible with surge type brake actuators. Another neat features of this system is that you can back your trailer up without having to remove or uninstall any components. These spring bars are going to flex appropriately over uneven terrain which is going to offer a really nice control to even ride without the bounce. It's also going to be very quiet. These brackets are no drill clamp on brackets that can be adjusted along your trailer frame to accommodate frame mounted accessories such as gas tanks, tool boxes or generators. Then when it comes to the head assembly the desired tilt is achieved by using a traditional washer design.

It's going to come with this spacer rivet and it's going to come with some washer right here so you can add or remove washers from the spacer rivet to tilt the head up or down. Underneath the head assembly there's going to be a slot right there for that spacer rivet to be installed. The unit's going to come with your detailed installation instructions and owners manual and it's going to help walk you through the appropriate tilt for your application. Then also underneath the head assembly or underneath the hitch ball there's going to be an angle set bolt, you'll need to tighten that down a little bit. That is included to make sure that the spacer rivet is in correct positioning when it comes to making sure you get the tilt you need for your application. The unit's made from a strong steel construction, it's dip steel.

It's going to very durable and corrosion resistant, it's got a really nice finish on it. It's going to last a long time and it's going to look great for a long time. Now the system's going to come with everything that you see here on the table, as well as the detailed installation instructions and owners manual that I mentioned earlier. It also comes with your 2-5/16 inch hitch bar rated for 10,000 pounds. It's got the lock washer underneath as well as the nut to get it fully installed. You will need to get that torque down to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. One of the things that I want to mention that will make that process easier is using a 1-7/8 inch thin walled socket. It is recommended for the hitch ball installation. We do carry that here at etrailer.com, it's sold separately you can find it with part number EQ70-00-4800. That's also going to come up, or excuse me it's going to come with this snap up lever. This is designed to ease installation by reducing the amount of lifting required by the trailer jack. When you're getting your arms in place on these brackets. You can see that the unique design of our brackets allow for the unit to fit a variety of trailer frame sizes. Again, the hitch ball on the unit is 2-5/16 of an inch. The adjustable shank is designed to go into a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver that's rated for use with the weight distribution system. The brackets are going to fit trailer frames with the height from 3 inches, that would be at the lowest setting right here all the way to 6 inches, so 3 inches, 4 inches, 5 inches and 6 inch tall trailer frames. I want to mention just the adjustable shank here. I don't have it fully installed just because I wanted to be able to take it out and show it to you. This is going to feature a 6 hole design, so that's the amount of adjustment holes that we right here on the upright bar of the shank. These holes are going to be separated on center by an inch and a quarter. The shank length, I took a measurement and I'll do it again for you, place it right here. We'll go over some measurements real quick with that. The overall length of the shank from very front to very back is going to be 12 inches. If we take a measurement from the center of the adjustment holes to the center of the hitch pin hole we're looking at 8 inches. From the front of the shank to the center of the hitch pin hole we're looking at a measurement of 9 inches. Then from the back of that upright bar to the center of the hitch pin hole we're looking at about 7 inches. Now if you're using this in the rise position you want to make sure you have enough clearance at the back of the vehicle with this support bar right here. It's a welded construction, nice solid steel design. I'm going to give you a measurement from the bottom of that base right there, that brace right here at the weld so at the base of the brace to the center of the hitch pin hole. We're looking at a clearance measurement of around 4 inches. Again, that's only going to come into play if you're using the adjustable shank in the rise position like this. Real quick just to go over the hardware that it comes with. Again, we talked about the snap up lever. It's going to come with this set right here. This is all to get the head assembly installed on that adjustable shank. Then you've got your spacer rivet with the washers and then you're also going to have a 5/8 inch diameter hitch pin and clip to get the adjustable shank installed in your trailer hitch. Now if you're using this in the rise position with the head assembly at the highest setting it's going to give you a maximum rise of 7 inches, that's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch or the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. If you flip this over to the drop position and lower the head assembly at the lowest setting it's going to give you a maximum drop of 3 inches from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. These spring bars, again they're held in the head assembly with a pin and clip, very easy to get those installed as well as to remove them. These are going to measure 36 inches long and then they're going to give us a width measurement of 1 and 3/8 of an inch. They're a nice square design. The product is made right here in the USA and it's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System with the 4 Point Sway Control.

I received this hitch a few short days after placing my order and as soon as it arrived I unpackaged it to admire the contents. Everything was intact and ready to assemble, just as expected. I also ordered the special thin walled socket, which I am glad I did since my mechanic friend that did my torquing didn't have a socket that would work for this hitch ball. I know it is expensive but I wanted everything done right. I installed the hitch and set it up following the directions in the manual, and everything turned out perfectly. I think from start to finish it took the wife and I less than an hour and a half. Easy, and according to my measurements and a visual everything looked perfect. None of this is rocket science, and the installation is truly easy. Well, time to try it out, and what great timing, we left Saturday morning in a 40 MPH headwind for 20 miles, and then another 25 miles with the wind quartering at us on a busy highway. This hitch worked flawlessly! I was tickled with the whole ordeal, and today coming back with no wind at all it wasn't much different than the day we had the wind. You know what wind means, right? WINDY IN ND. Yep, we get our share. This hitch served us very well, and I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the ease of installation and set up. I would order it again in a heartbeat. My tow vehicle: 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with max trailer tow package. 6.2 L with 8 speed transmission. My travel trailer: 2016 Jayco Octane SL, weighs in loaded at 6100 lbs with a hitch weight of 910 lbs. 517401

A whole year has gone by, and Im still extremely satisfied with my equalizer hitch. I hear the squeaks when I make my turns, I know people talk about this hitch being slightly noisy, but every time I hear it I smile. I know its back there, doing its thing, and it does it extremely well. I would buy this hitch again in a New York minute. I am very pleased. Did I say Im VERY pleased? Lol. Its that good.

Lindy was very helpful verifying the correct model for my new 19 ft TT. The hitch arrived in 2 boxes - very heavy! This hitch is built like it belongs on a tank - glad I purchased the hitchgrip carrying tool. All of the parts are heavy duty and well finished. The etrailer installation video on YouTube is very helpful to better demonstrate the installation manual instructions. My dealer installed the ball since they had the thin-wall socket. Everything installed easily and fit well. Need to load up the new TT and make final adjustments if necessary. 493532

This is one slick setup. I got it tuned in perfectly on the second try. Instructions are very specific and very accurate. I found only one thing that could be better - the bolts that hold the ball mount to the receiver bar are too long, at least 1" too long. A standard socket won't fit over them to torque the nut - shorter bolts or a warning that a deep socket is needed would be nice. This seems like an anomaly, as everything else was a perfect fit. Good price, speedy delivery, as always. One caution, this thing is heavy! 283591

Great weight distribution system! Easy to install and adjust. I've used it for over a year now and find it quick and easy to use. However, I quickly lost the black 'persuasion bar' so paint yours red for better visibility when you set it down (although you'll rarely need it). 488981

Hitch has performed great after a year. Quality is good, 4-pt sway control is noticeably helpful, but only if you have the hitch setup correctly. I had the RV dealer set this up for me, and the first 300 miles of towing a 7,000 lb trailer with my F150 was rather uncomfortable. Once at my home, I spent a good 30 minutes dialing in the hitch, and now it works great. It IS squeaky in turns. We use white lithium grease (at the front of the hitch, not the rear L brackets that need the friction) and it helps, but it still is a little embarrassing pulling out of the gas station as it creaks and we get "the stares." If I could buy it again I definitely would, despite the turn squeaks because it is easy to connect and disconnect, it provides decent sway control, and the price is attractive. If you are on the fence about the 10,000lb unit or the 12,500lb, I wish I would have bought the higher unit for my 7,000lb load. Because I am nearer to the limit of WD for the 10,000lb unit, it requires lots of the included washers to angle the hitch head to the proper geometry for the load. The hitch head angle then makes disconnecting my trailer somewhat tricky if I am at an unlevel campsite. The head will snag the trailer ball and I'll have to rock the trailer back and forth to get it to disconnect. I think the 12,500lb unit's stiffer arms and thereby better geometry would release better... YMMV 600852

Honestly a great purchase. Read a ton of reviews before buying. Had the traditional style weight distribution hitch with sway bar attachment before, and I'll definitely say that I have no intentions of going back! The sway control is absolutely great. Hauled a 30' travel trailer from Atlanta, GA to upstate New York and back with absolutely no sway issues whatsoever. If set up correctly, it should do the trick. I will say, however, that it can be slightly loud at low speeds, but is just something to get used to. Would recommend this hitch to anyone. Worth the investment. 338779

The hitch works great. Distributes load and no sway. I have a Dodge Diesel pretty good weight to balance against 7500# trailer so trailer isn't going to push around anyway. I like ability to back in to spaces not having to drop load from hitch. I use the plastic inserts (which should be included not extra, MHO) and hitch does not make noise. It takes serious focus on instructions to setup hitch. I had to reduce amount of load pushed to front of truck because it caused loss of traction. The torque on fasteners was beyond my tooling capabilities so set hitch, tighten as much as possible then took to Les Schwab who accomplished the finish torques. I would buy it again. 329832

Hitch has functioned flawlessly over the last year. No sway on hiway. Im about to move hitch to new tow vehicle and readjust. The new truck is much lighter than original tow vehicle. The hitch will hopefully provide the stability between lighter tow vehicle and same trailer. We shall see

I have a new 2012 F150 Ford XLT which does NOT pull my trailer as well as my old truck. I was not comfortable with the amount of sway and could not go over 50mph. On Sunday night after returning I purchased the Equal-i-zer. On Thursday it arrived and we literally had to look at the instruction book once. After 30 minutes the installation was completed and no extra parts... I merged onto the highway to test the equipment. I reached a cruising speed of 70mph and had absolutely NO SWAY. The fact that I now have a piece of mind knowing that the Equal-i-zer is less than that of a life when you are towing without the proper equipment. Other products may be available but research was extensive before I purchased the Equal-i-zer. The shear strength is visible and the product is very well made. The fasteners are heavy, the hitch is heavy, and the stabilizer bars are heavy. This is a 5 star product and every trailer owner should own the Equal-i-zer. The best thing about all of this is it was a product that was sold without a gimick and does the job well. Hat's off to you!! Scott S. 47603

I have bought a F150 2013. having simular issues do you know the weight of your trailer I have apx. 5500 lb trailer tongue weight about 550 to 600 lbs

The 550-600 tongue weight falls into an in-between area with Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems. The 6K system is built for 400-600 pounds tongue weight, and you are at the end of that range so it may not be a good choice particularly if you have any gear in the tow vehicle rear of the axle. Remember any weight behind the axle counts towards your tongue weight. The next step up is the 10K system featured on this page with a recommended tongue weight range of 400-1000 pounds. Now this would work, but it may be a bit overkill. The extra tension of these bars when paired with a 600 pound tongue weight may ride a bit stiff. If you are not particular to the Equal-i-zer systems, you may want to check out the Fastway 8K system, part FA92-00-0800. It may be a bit closer of a match to your trailer.

Just bought a new Travel Trailer, had been using a Reese Weight distribution set up with traditional sway bar. This system worked well but had the tractor trailers pushing me around and on windy days I had to reduce highway speeds dramatically. So, I chose to upgrade to the Equalizer for the new TT. I had the Professionals install it since it was raining but the videos and information on etrailer make me confident I could have done it with the correct tools. The Equalizer was fantastic on the 75 mile ride home in the rain with heavy Tractor Trailer traffic. Had little to no sway. Very pleased with my decision. This is a heavy duty system and is easy to hook up. I ordered by calling etrailer because I had a question about shipping and delivery since I needed the new set up for delivery of my new TT. Lisa was more than helpful answering my questions and getting the hitch to me on time. I strongly recommend The Equalizer and etrailer for your towing needs. 426708

after searching multiple websites for the Equalizer 10,000lb gtw/ 1000 lb tw weight distribution and 4 point sway control hitch, E-Trailer had the best deal for the this hitch. Not only the best deal but the best price and free shipping as well. In addition E-Trailer also offered a great price pledge, if you find an equal product cheaper they will price match. When I found a cheaper unit and emailed E-Trailer they matched the cheaper price and I saved another $xx.the hitch was also shipped quickly and I received it 3 days later. Their customer service was great. they were informative, polite and quick with all parts of the transaction, including the price match refund. great, price, great service, I would recommend them and will shop with them again. 319704

I think this hitch saved our lives and probably others. This is my first "big" camper I've been towing trailers and pop ups for years. A 23' Grey Wolf Toyhauler with my 2011 Ford Expy as the TV out in front. I had been talking with more mature campers from work about the high prices of some of these WD hitches.... who wisely advised... don't go cheap on tires, brakes or hitches. I bit the bullet, took a little heat from the wife, cause I had it professionally installed too. (This thing is massive). I'll add pics next time I hookup. Plus rolling on $1200 of new Good Year AT's So me and my wife had just pulled out from Clabough's camp grounds after a week of great exploring, great weather and fun smoky Mtn motorcycle riding. We were heading north on 441, not to the highway yet. Probably not on the road more than 20 min or so driving through a small town. Maybe Severville Anyway, 4 lanes, maybe 40mph or 45mph. Following a car, and just talking. Then what seemed to be out of no where, I looked up to see the car was stopped at a red light right in front of us. When did that light turn red!! I had less than a second to react. I knew I couldn't stop. No one coming left or right at the intersection. No one to my right. It was tight, but I might be able to make it.... I swerved HARD right, then back with a HARD left... missing the car in front of us, and the sidewalk. We went sailing through the intersection totally unscathed... and THE CAMPER FOLLOWED ALONG PERFECTLY!! Silence. Neither of us said a word for what seemed like 5 minutes. I'm not even sure who spoke first. I recall someone saying like, did that just happen? And "we're not doing that again" So guys, it may seem like a lot of money, but I'd say it's pretty cheap. I'll just repeat what I was told... don't cheap out on tires, brake, or hitches. Happy camping. 422706

Worth every cent. We bought a 2008 26' Sun Valley Road Runner two weeks ago and immediately took it on a trip to the N. Georgia mountains behind our 2006 Silverado 1500HD. Very scary up and back with a serious sway problem that kept me from going over 50 mph. Upon returning I researched heavily on how to "prevent" sway and not just "reduce" it. Your website was extremely helpful in explaining the differences in all the products available. The product reviews were very favorable for the Equal-i-zer four point system so it made my decision an easy one. Within two days of ordering, it arrived and I just installed it today. It was very easy to set up. I took it out for a run on the interstate and WOW what a difference! I could run along at 65-70 mph with absolutely no sway and very little bounce. This is the first time I had to buy a weight distribution system and if I ever have to do it again I will certainly go back through etrailer.com. The Equal-i-zer is a great product. 281160

Ordered this product for the built in sway control. My last hitch required another device to achieve this, but I didn't care for the additional work when backing up or on wet surfaces. The order shipped quickly and arrived intact in 2 separate packages. The smaller of the two, contained the hitch shank and main body. It's heavy, so it was expected that the box would have a hole. The other larger package was sealed and intact. All parts were present. Setup was straightforward, documentation excellent. Particularly the places to annotate measurements. The manual was small but effective. The ball mounting requires a thin walled 1 7/8 socket. I didn't buy this, my RV dealer torqued my setup for nothing. Very satisfied with this hitch thus far. Will update when I have had a chance to put it through the motion. 525174

After many hours of reading reviews and research on this weight distributing hitch I am very impressed with the quality of this hitch and the fact that is American made in the USA. I have a new 34' 2016 Tracer travel trailer which I will be using this hitch with. I have been using a easylift spring bar hitch with the brake pad type sway control. Never was that satisified with it. This equalizer is a very impressive hitch. The staff a e-trailer was very helpful in suggesting and recommending this hitch. I talked to a different sales person on 3 different calls and they all gave me great information. E-trailer has one of the most informative advertising and videos on the internet. They met a price match of another offer with no beating around the bush. I would highly recommend them and plan to use them in the future.Order was shipped on Friday and I received it the following Wednesday.Thank you E-trailer and staff... 235462

I am very pleased with the hitch and its operation. I dont miss the old chain style hook up.This is so much easier to connect to more important is its performance while towing. I highly recommend this hitch.

Product arrived on time and in good condition, I ended up having to purchase another shank with maximum 6" drop. The description I found of the standard shank on your web site stated Maximum drop: 3" from top of hitch receiver opening. I interpreted this to mean the shank at it's lowest setting would allow the top of the ball to be 3-inches from the receiver height. Actually at the lowest adjustment the top of the ball is approximately even with the top of the receiver. Just spent another $116.95 which I was not counting on. The standard shank that comes with the package is non-returnable by itself Fits: 2" x 2" trailer hitch receivers Tongue weight: 600 lbs - 1,400 lbs Overall length: 12" Maximum rise: 7" from top of hitch receiver opening Maximum drop: 3" from top of hitch receiver opening Incremental adjustment: 1-1/4" 564621

The Equal-i-zer hitch arrived in 3 days with free shipping. It was fairly easy to install with the proper tools. I had to find someone to tighten the ball to the hitch because it requires a 1-7/8 inch socket and needs to be torqued to about 300 lbs. Followed the directions to properly adjust the hitch for the trailer and tow vehicle and everything worked well. 277923

The Hitch its self is awesome I just docked it a star because of cheap hardware. The sway is minimal the truck rides great and level and with the pads for the L-brackets noise is minimal. Like many vendors their hardware is not up to the task. I had the washers on the 3/4 bolts that hold the Head to the shank literally disintegrate(they cracked in so many places it was like a spider web). Luckily they held till I got home then I got some Military spec washers and they seem to be doing fine. 429312

I was quoted it would cost $900 for a local camping shop to put on the weight distribution hitch. I looked into eTrailer and found one much cheaper. It was delivered quickly and with free shipping. Through talking with them via email and watching the instructional video, I easily installed it myself in a couple hours. The electric jack was also purchased through eTrailer and installed in 20 minutes. 486062

The Equal-I-Zer hitch has worked very well for towing our Keystone Passport travel trailer. I like that achieves both sway control and weight distribution. In addition, I'd recommend getting the Sway Bracket Jacket pads that go under the spring bars as it really quiets down the hitch operation. Great product, very well made and worth the money. 575533

We recently bought a travel travel trailer and I needed to use a weight distribution hitch for the first time. I researched several of the different models and types before settling on this one. I liked that I would not have to drill into the frame of my brand new camper and the sway control was built into the hitch. Upon opening the box I was a little intimidated at the volume of parts, but a quick read through the manual sorted it all out very nicely. One issue, which might be common with all such hitches, is the tools I needed to set it up. It requires some very specific and large wrenches and sockets that can be hard to find. Of particular concern was the thin-walled socket to attach the hitch. The nut for the hitch ball sits in a recess and only a socket can reach it. Also, the bolts have high torque specifications that would require a very expensive torque wrench to actually reach. Our RV dealer did most of the initial install work, but I have since made adjustments and simply do the best I can with the torque. One thing we noticed on our first trip with the new camper is that the hitch makes very loud creaking and popping noises when turning. This is normal due to the way the sway control works on this hitch -- steel rubbing against steel is loud. There are ways to address this, but I have not tried them yet. Pros Weight distribution and sway control in one device (no separate sway bar needed) No drilling required Well written manual with very detailed setup instructions Good brand with lots of additional information available online Feels sturdy and up to the job Does a great job at both distributing the load and reducing sway Easy to hook up trailer once initial setup is complete Able to backup without removing the load bars Included 'cheater' tool comes in very handy to get the bars onto the brackets Cons Initial setup requires a lot of specialized and/or expensive tools to complete per the instructions Very loud creaking and popping noises when you turn (aesthetic issue, not a functional problem) Overall I am extremely pleased with this hitch. 265423

I ordered this to pull our camper, it came the very next day. It pulls the camper no problem doing 60mph. You do have to get a special socket for the ball, but asked my local RV dealer if they could tighten it for me and they did. I couldn't be happier with this system! You won't be sorry with this hitch system or the company! 434628

Whew! I am so glad I purchased the Equalizer. I could feel the difference has soon as I pulled out of the driveway. I hit the highway and got up to 75 mph and the trailer never swayed even when passing trailer trucks. The set up was a piece of cake(only about 2hr). I had to buy a new set up to replace the useless set up I got from the dealer. 2015, 30ft Flagstaff Superlite 26FKWS, GVWR 6723. F150, towing package, Ecoboost 430864

I would never buy another brand or style of weight distribution system. I've had it for a year (10 total trips) - and never once was I concerned about sway issues. The Weight distribution aspect is perfect. Its night and day difference when I pull my trailer (around town or back to where we store it) with just my regular hitch. I've convinced two of my friends to purchase this set up and they say they love it too! 469112

I purchased the Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch for my wife's '05 Chevy Tahoe and our 27 ft. Jayco trailer. The hitch system was easy and straightforward to install. Without the weight distribution hitch, the back of my wife's Tahoe sagged several inches. With the hitch installed, the ride height of my wife's Tahoe was nearly the same as the truck alone. She has towed the trailer twice, and feels confident she can connect and tow it by herself if the need arises. 297267

The Equalizer Wt Dist W Sway Con And Ball 10k Gtw, 1000 Tw. Was recommended for my application and works great. [Local retailer] in New York did the installation on my New 2017 Starcraft ultra light. The product has a clean look on the trailer. The Equalizer is a great product for tight turns and backing into parking slips. No need to remove sway controls, because its incorporated into the Patented Design. I've used other styles in the past but this is the product for me. Immediately after placing the order I was notified the product was not in stock and I was given an expected ship date. I was updated several times during my wait and to my surprise the package showed up a few days earlier than expected. I haven't yet installed the item but it arrived in good condition even though one box was broken open due to the weight of the items inside. Luckily all contents were accounted for. Product is very sturdy and in great condition with no scratches or shipping damage. Excellent customer service in keeping me informed on a delivery date. I received the shipment and box appeared quite damaged, and product was very heavy duty. However, when I began assembly of the bar brackets to the trailer with L brackets, it said there was suppose to be 4 - 1/2" X 1 1/2" bolts and there was only 2 so may be a single packaging error! After all assembly I hooked truck up and towed it out of town 70mph and absolutely no sway whatsoever! Had loud popping sound when turning and believe it was bars sliding on L brackets so greased up very good and hope that quiets it down!! Well pleased with it's heavy duty construction!! 4 stars ONLY because short of 2 bolts! 666242

Comments

As you suspect, the squeaking is caused by the metal-on-metal friction of the spring bars on the L-brackets, the noise cant really be avoided. Greasing this surface will diminish the effectiveness of the sway control to a large degree.

Nice and simple weight distribution/anti-sway hitch system with no extra anti sway mechanisms or parts needed. Easy to set up initially and easy to hook up when towing the trailer. Never had any sway issues, even in strong crosswinds or from passing semis. Only concern, maybe that's not the right word, is the noise at low speed, it lessen over time. I have put grease on various parts and that does quiet things down. At least you know it is there and working 660781

Comments

Because the Equal-i-zer weight distribution system relies on metal-on-metal friction for the sway control component, some noise is unavoidable. Before lubricating, be sure to check the instructions on how to correctly lubricate the system, as adding grease to the wrong spot can prevent the sway control from working correctly.

This is an excellent hitch, well worth the price. It had a wider range of tongue weight capacity than other hitches which made a difference to me as I'm considering a larger camper one day and don't want to have to buy another hitch if I go up in size. I use it on a 2011 Tahoe to pull a 21.5 camper and it has made a huge difference in towing. The anti-sway works very well, as does the weight distribution. You really feel the transfer of weight to the front wheels and the overall stability of towing is impressive. I like not having to remember to remove an anti sway mechanism before backing into a space, as the best of us can forget things like that when busy with whatever other thoughts and plans. Take your time to follow the instructions properly I used a large pipe/monkey wrench and pipe to torque down the ball. I had an old bearing nut socket that was just good enough to hold the ball nut until the lock washer engaged...otherwise u need a thin walled socket as the nut is recessed in the hitch.) After a year of use it is as new (used for 4 camping trips so far). The equalizer is a good name for a good hitch and I highly recommend it. If you have never had a weight distributing hitch with sway control, you will kick yourself for not having invested in it sooner once you take your first drive/tow with it. 655119

I've towed probably a dozen times with the Equal-i-zer. This thing is way better than the Reese SC that I had bought previously. The Reese bars used to jump out of the saddles in tight turns. Installation and set up are about average I guess. Pretty easy. Buy the Bracket Jackets and make sure to grease/lube the bar pivots before every trip for a nice smooth quiet tow. When my brother bought his camper I had him buy one of these. 644396

This is the first time that I have used a weight distribution hitch. The design made better sense to me than others - enough to justify the additional cost over the chain types. I think I made the right call. My trailer is in the 6000 lb range and I needed to choose between the 6000 and the 10,000 lb options (there is nothing between). I was fearful that the larger capacity unit would be too stiff. I went with the 10k on the advice of etrailer The equipment was easy to install and adjust. It seemed very stiff riding on the first trip, but is much better now - not sure if it was a break in period or I got used to it. Great choice, great product, great service. 635680

I’ve purchase many weight distribution hitches over the yrs and this hitch by far is the best I’ve ever owned. Easy installation, easy to understand install directions and very well built. I pull a 6000 pound 30 foot Keystone Bullet TT with a 2014 Ford F-150 Supercrew, and the trailer pulls straight as an arrow even when getting past by 18 wheelers. No sway on bridge abutments and or expansion joints. You don’t have to disconnect anything to back up the trailer like a lot of other WD hitches. Spend the money and buy the last WD hitch you’ll ever buy. 635589

- EQ37100ET
by:

This is a great weight distribution and anti-sway option, and it has worked well for us. Key things to think about: - It is not as easy to adjust the weight distribution as on a traditional chain-based system where you can just use a different link on the chain. If you want to adjust the weight distribution, the main method is to add or subtract washers within the hitch which changes the angle of the hitch. This requires taking the hitch apart, which is time consuming. - Unless you want it to scream like a banshee when you turn, you MUST grease the pivot points in the hitch. You may need to re-apply every few days or weeks when actively towing. This is just part of the upkeep of having this hitch. 635574

  • To determine the best Weight Distribution (WD) system for your towing setup you will want to choose a system with a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded...

  • Can Air Bags and a Weight Distribution Hitch be Used Together?
  • It is possible to use a weight distribution system and air spring suspension enhancement together in a 2013 Ford F-250 or F-350 Super Duty, though if you are experiencing sag with a weight distribution system, it may not have the proper rating for the tongue weight of the trailer. To choose a proper weight distribution system, the most important thing to know is the total tongue weight of your setup. Your total tongue weight is the loaded tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight...

  • Weight Distribution System for Snowmobile Trailer with Short Tongue
  • Weight distribution systems usually install such that their A-frame-mounted spring bar lift brackets are between 26 and 32-inches to the rear of the hitch ball. As an example, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET, which works for trailer tongue weights from 600- to 1000-lbs, has brackets that need to be positioned between 27- and 32-inches from the hitch ball center. But we do offer the Curt Short Arm # C17332 which needs 28-inches. Trailers that have a straight pole...

  • What Is Needed To Tow a Trailer With a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • According to the owner's manual for your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the towing capacity can range from 2,000 lbs to 3,500 lbs. The components that you listed (transmission cooler/upgraded suspension components) will certainly improve your towing experience however, in the eyes of the manufacturer the towing capacity will remain unchanged for the life of the vehicle no matter what parts are added. The other issue you are going to run into is that they do not make a trailer hitch for your...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with GVWR of 5,200 Pounds
  • You are correct that a weight distribution system that is rated too high for what you need can cause a rough ride for you. On the other hand if it's rated too low it won't be able to do its job. If your trailer is fully loaded you'll likely have a loaded and ready to tow tongue weight between 500 and 600 pounds. You also need to add in the amount of weight behind the rear axle of your 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. With that being said you're probably looking for a system rated in the...

  • Recommended Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System for 2018 Rockwood Roo 233s
  • For your 2018 Rockwood Roo 233s, the unloaded hitch weight is the 612 lbs you stated as the 4842 is also the unloaded weight. Based on the 1770 cargo capacity, that puts the trailer at a GVWR of 6612. Your unloaded tongue weight ratio is currently at just under 13%, so if you take that number and the GVWR, you get a loaded tongue weight of right around 850 lbs. You want your total tongue weight which includes your loaded tongue weight and any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow...

  • Recommendation on a Weight Distribution System on a 2014 Ford F-150 and a Travel Trailer
  • Before you can decide on a weight distribution system for your towing set-up, you will need to find the total tongue weight between your trailer and truck. The total tongue weight will be a fully loaded and ready to tow trailer and any weight that you will be carrying in the bed of the truck behind the rear axle. I have attached a help article that will show you to find the total tongue weight of your set-up. Using a tongue weight scale, like # 5780, to help find the weight. In looking...

  • Can an Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System be Used with a 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Reducer
  • The best option would be to replace the shank that came with Equal-I-zer system # EQ37100ET with one that fits directly in a 2-1/2 inch receiver. There are 3 Equal-I-zer options: # EQ90-02-4900 with 6 inch drop or 10 inch rise # EQ90-02-4800 with 4 inch drop or 8 inch rise # EQ90-02-4700 with 3 inch drop or 7 inch rise For some 2-1/2 inch hitches the use of a reducer sleeve such as # C45405 will reduce the capacity of the hitch so I would check on that first before getting a sleeve...

  • There's a couple key differences between the Equal-I-Zer Weight Distribution systems # EQ37121ET and # EQ37100ET that you referenced. The biggest being that the tongue weight range is different. The part # EQ37100ET has a range of 600-1,000 lbs and includes a shank whereas the part # EQ37121ET has a range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs and does not include a shank.
